Detailed Reviews
We were here on Melbourne cup day so it was pretty busy but we found a seat at the bar and then decided to order dinner as there was pasta on the menu , not often found in smaller pubs - it certainly didn't disappoint, a very large helping which I enjoyed. My partner had the roast which was also a very big meal.

Only when here because my first choice was full. The meal I had was distinctly poor. Poor presentation, over cooked to the point of being rock solid and small in portion size. Best to miss this as a place to eat. Beer was nice though!

I dont usually write reviews but we came from Hanmer to play golf in Reefton then thought we would have a beer and watch the cricket.... both publicans were rude they did not want us there and we were greeted with one word answers to questions like "how is your day going"...... maybe we got them on a bad day? Hopefully you strike them in a better mood :(

Not one to write reviews but as our experience was so bad I decided to share. Sorry I've wrote alot!
We travelled the South Island after
the Covid lockdown and tried to spent our money at small and local businesses rather than chain stores and fast food outlets. Meeting some friendly cafe, pub and shop owners who were stoked to see someone new in their shop and always gave us a local sight to see or thing to do.
Having just spent the last 2 weeks in a campervan touring the South island and visiting many pubs, cafes, restaurants, shops and dairys this was the only place we regret giving any of our money to. Funnily enough 5min prior to stepping foot inside Hotel Reefton I had just been at one if the local stores/shops and mentioned i was heading there for a beer and a feed, the person serving me said "Good Luck with that" which now I realize was not just a random passing comment.
The lady who served us and looked like she ran the place, had a terrible attitude and was very snappy and rude, certainly did not appear to even want us in the bar. Simply friendly questions and comments from us were treated with smart remarks and death stares and very unwelcoming tones. Although as soon as a one of the locals said a word from across the bar her attitude would turn right around. Her husband ( I assume) was no better with grumbles under his breath while be served and trying to make friendly conversation with him.
Had it not of been for them being the only place in town with a TAB to watch a horse race I wanted to see, we would of walked straight out. Decided we would cook our own meal in the campervan rather than give them our money so only ended up having a couple of quick beers and a garlic bread which was overpriced and undercooked.
You would think given the recent Covid events that any visitors willing to explore and spend money would be welcome but certainly NOT HERE.

Rude and unfriendly, felt unwanted as paying customers (food and drink). You would think at this time with covid they would be happy to have paying customer's coming through their doors. Would not reccomend at all, best to go elsewhere. Avoid. Im sorry but maybe put a sign up if you just want local customers. No need to make non local customers feel bad for stepping into your establishment.

Chanced upon this pub on a quiet Sunday night in search of a traditional Sunday roast meal while on a brief stop in Reefton. The roast beef was amazing and portions very generous. Served by very hospitable hosts. Squeezed in apple crumble dessert, also delicious. Can highly recommend.

We went along for a drink on a Friday evening reasonably late after having a meal elsewhere, we were mostly just interested to see what all the fuss is about in other reviews. The hotel is no oil painting but we got prompt, super friendly service from a young lady called Gabby, she is a credit to the place. Not such interesting patrons as the other pub we went to but certainly didn't bother us.
Again on the Saturday we went back after eating elsewere and met one of the owners Chris I think? who looked after us for the rest of the night. Good to have a yarn to and even joked to him about being famous for bad reviews which he took in good spirit. We had no complaints and enjoyed both visits. Finished the night with a couple of generous ports and even met the family friendly well behaved dog. We went here with an open mind not attitude and got good service in return.

Now then...! This hotel is terrible principally due to the unwelcoming and very rude (presumably) husband and wife team who run it. Their tag team passive aggressive approach to customers is confusing and it is made very clear that you are not welcome even as paying guests. If that wasn't bad enough the bed was shared with a colony of bed bugs which I only realised in the morning when I was bitten all down my body after a restless sleep. It's not nice its not cheap and it's an absolute shame because the rest of Reefton is beautiful and the businesses friendly and welcoming...there are much nicer places to stay in Reefton most of which we drank and ate at. I thoroughly recommend avoiding...just like you would avoid bed bugs.
