The place is neat and tidy but there are a lot of spiderwebs everywhere which freaks me out abit. If renting out the rooms make sure they are free of them. The bathroom needs new shower curtains, very mouldy. The place is very dated and basic. Which isn't a problem being a backpackers. We have been to a few backpackers and camp parks around the country and this one was the most expensive and have to say not one of the nicest. The price is very high for what you get. Seeing that backpackers are for people who are on tight budgets. That's where I feel you being ripped off.
The outside garden is pretty but where the rusty barbeque is, is very run down. I wouldn't want to spend time outside. Never used the kitchen or lounge facilities so cant judge on that.
This is definitely not a case you get what you pay for, otherwise I would have had a spa bath.

A bit confused about the high number of 5 star reviews so wanted to leave a review based on our recent stay.
Pros: the kitchen area is really well-equipped, the lounge is huge and has lots of books etc, the back garden is very pretty, there is off street parking round the back and the bathrooms are clean and large. The manager/staff member who greeted us was a little cold at first but over the next days was really friendly and chatty, telling us about the wildlife etc.

Cons: the description of "tastefully refurbished" did not apply to our room or others that we saw (through open doors before people had checked in). It is old and tired- in fairness I imagine that it's difficult to find time to refurbish this place as it seems to be the largest accommodation option for the area. No problems with an old or tired building or room or facilities at all but I think it's unfair to set expectations as recently refurbished when from the areas of the building we saw that was not the case.

All in all, a fair option for somewhere that doesn't have lots of accommodation, but take the descriptions with a pinch of salt so your expectations aren't set too high.

I enjoyed my stay here, the place had a nice, welcoming vibe. It's a well loved building that could do with a lick of paint in places but the carpet was new (I suspect it's hard maintaining a building this old.) There was lots of Reefton history on the walls which was useful as I had visited some of the places on the drive in.

The whole building is open 24/7 but you have your own room key so security is not an issue (in fact I had the majority of the place to myself during my stay. Very surreal!).

Outside are some established gardens which hide the street making it very peaceful. The building is U shaped with a courtyard in the middle. Great to sit in the sun with a coffee (or a beer!) and a book or chat to someone. Off street parking is round the back which made it easier to keep an eye on my car (I drive a Demio!).

There's a large kitchen with everything you need to cook up a feed and a fridge/freezer to store food. Plus a lounge with settee and TV. Showers had good water pressure.

All up good value for the price. Can definitely recommend if you're looking for somewhere to stay in Reefton.

Looked after very well by hospitable and helpful proprietor.... a very nice bloke to boot.
Unlimited hot water and nice big old style baths - kinda retro but hey, you can pay a couple a hundy more for the exact same luxury in a flash hotel spa if you want !

Thank you (my back much better after the hot soak) cheers regards Mike.

I booked a twin unit for my son and I for today. We arrived but there was no response when I rang the bell nor the managers cell phone. The latter call asked me to text so I did. No response. So I called the land line and was advised to call the mobile which I did only to get the message to text. I am still waiting for anything, have booked in elsewhere, cheaper, and will cancel payment

Have stayed here twice now and very happy with my stays. Good beds, well equiped kitchen and nice lounge. Have found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Location is fine, a short walk from town and food outlets. Good parking spot for cars and motorcycles. Showers and bathrooms are clean and there’s plenty of hot water.

Two of us stayed here in Jan/Feb 2012. It was spotless and had the most wonderful communal kitchen, lounge and back garden facing the sun. The owner was very friendly. The room was so inexpensive and the shared bathrooms were clean and modern. You really did not require en suite. It is a short walk to the main small street which serves a meal and a drink. I would strongly recommend this place based on value for money, space and cleanliness. As it is a working mining town some minors were staying and were very interesting to talk to. The place is exactly what it says that it is. An ex-nurses home and it felt like it too. Wide corridors and the ghosts of the many nurses who once stayed here!

I’ve booked one night in a queen room and they kicked us out this morning when we were about to have our breakfast.
We’ve booked this room just because they have a good reputation on their reviews and we were driving the whole day, so we were looking for a comfy option. But it was a terrible experience. The place looks like an old creepy hospital with the wood creaking and the lights all off by 9:40pm, when we got there. There was no one at the front door, we rang the bell several times and also called the number it was in the sign (7328881) and the other in their own flyer that was on the table (37328881) but no one answered. We even booked saying that we were about to get there close to 10pm and to let us know where they would leave us the key. I’ve found an open room after a while trying to find someone and decided that it was ours for the night even we had no key and no wifi and no contact with anyone from the hotel.
We had a bad night of sleep because my girlfriend was scared with the spiders in every corner of the room and bathroom. It was the perfect scenario for a horror movie. In the morning we were about to have our breakfast and the owner surprised us saying we haven’t called, calling us liars and dumbs cause the right number wasn’t the one in the sign nor the folder, that we were supposed to know it has an 0 before the number 3. When I said that we gonna write bad reviews, he kicked us out saying he would call the police on us. What a nightmare! I’m sorry I didn’t take that many pictures but I didn’t know we were about to be kicked out.

Response from theoldn, Manager at The Old Nurses Home Guesthouse
Responded 19 Apr 2018
You were asked to leave the premises on Wednesday 18th of April at 10:15 am (which is 15 minutes after check-out time). The reason you were asked to leave was because it was after Check-out time of 10:00am, but more so was due to your threatening and aggressive nature. Further in regard to your threats to staff concerning overcritical revue content and what terrible revues you will write about the Old Nurses Home. None of our staff need to endure your aggressive behaviour. Our staff advised that the police would be called if you failed to leave, and you chose to leave eventually. Check-in and Check-out times are 2pm and 10am respectively. We received no emails or messages up to last check at 8.30 pm. We handle late night check-ins of guests on weekly basis and we have a reception bell which is used to alert staff of arrivals throughout the building. That bell is monitored 24/7. The bell has been checked and tested since your stay and was in 100% working order. We also have a local telephone line which is diverted to our staff - No calls were made to either the landline number or the cell number it is diverted to. We leave a local landline phone available in the reception area which dials direct to local numbers - no calls were made from this phone. On our flyer the phone number listed is +64 3 732 8881 not 3 732 8881 as you very incorrectly describe. Arriving at a hotel at 10pm in the evening without having phoned ahead to confirm and advise of your VERY LATE arrival is in fact questionable - particularly when we advise that we close at 8:30pm. Regardless, we don't like your attitude and we don't want your business.

The hostel was recommended by the very helpful dreadlocked lady at the Info. Bureau in Reefton.
The manager was also pretty cool. It is basically a big backpackers, with plenty of space throughout and nice gardens. We were there in May when it was quiet, and the only drawback might be the number of bathrooms if it was really busy.

We stayed at The Old Nurses Home in February 2014 and we just loved it! So much space to move around in. Huge kitchen to cook meals, country style large lounge with dining table and a gorgeous garden with BBQ. It has an authentic country house feel too it. Variety of bedroom styles too. Manager is a keen trout fisherman so can give lots of advice on that subject. He keeps this place so clean and it's spotless. In the bathroom recommend the last shower room near the window -it has a wall heater in it!
