Stopped for the night on our way south and found Reefton to be very welcoming and a quaint little town. Friendly staff at Dawson'sHotel, great food in a nice warm bar area and comfortable accommodation in motel style units at the back of the prooerty.
Very impressed. We made the 40min trip here from Maruia Hot Springs. Glad we did. Good food, generously sized drinks. Meal was a bit pricey ($36 each) but damn it was a good steak. All in all, we will be back!
We had to wait until after 4pm before checking in as it wasn't open until then even though our booking said we could check in at 2pm. I phoned to say we would like to check in and told they were just opening up now. We paid for our accommodation and told where to go but we weren't sure if we were in the correct place. The unit was rather dark and cold and the furnishings were old and tired. We felt it was overpriced for what we got. We ate in our room as there was a conference on and didn't want to eat with many people around.
We had a night at Dawson’s hotel .Decided to have a steak for tea ,it was exceptionally good and a nice atmosphere in the bar or sitting outside The accommodation was clean and comfortable .we shall return
We stayed overnight in Reefton and Dawson's was recommended by our B & B as a good place to eat. As a regular Tripadvisor critic, I always like to put a positive spin on what I can but in this instance I find it hard. Let's start then with the positive. Nice, friendly staff! That's it I'm afraid. The hotel is a mess - despite it being a heritage historic building - and the restaurant/dining area seems to be spread all over the ground floor area. The menu is short and limited to basics. I chose the prawn cocktail as I wanted something light. My companion chose, I thought unwisely, a smoked chicken,, brie and cranberry sauce pizza. Really? No seriously really? Anyway, my prawn cocktail arrived in a hard tortilla shell the size of a small salad bowl. The prawns were large and gelatinous but more strangely, icy cold and coated in a lurid pink sauce with enough sweetness to suggest that it might be a dessert. The pizza was simply awful. We suffered and paid because from experience I know that any complaints that we might have made would have fallen on deaf ears. I don't understand how food can be so bad. Yes, I am particular but not fussy if good food is served up in a chaotic, strange manner. As long as it tastes like it's supposed to (well as close as) and isn't some sort of mutant variation of what someone in a kitchen thinks is good food. Owners of establishments take note and mentor your cooking staff closely. I'm sorry, I couldn't write anything more positive but really Dawson's, wise up!…
