We were supposed to stay there for couple nights on our way down to Wellington, but ended up there the whole week. The campground situated by the beautiful Rangitikei river and a beautiful white cliff. Plenty of space to pitch your tent/s and feel like you're on your own. Facilities are really close by, bathrooms and showers are very clean.

The highlight of the stay is jumping into the river and have a swim at the end of each day. It's absolutely magic!

The Awastone cafe/main campground office is just up the road accessible by crossing the historic bridge. GREAT food with reasonable price. Everyone work there has been amazing to deal with and super helpful! Plenty of community activities over the weekend. Not to mention the kayaking and water adventurers stuff.

One thing to note though, if you happen to stay at the campground during Friday and Saturday, AVOID staying by the riverside. As it becomes the party central for some young groups and it could be quite disturbing if you want a good night sleep. Other than that, this place ie heavenly.

We are so looking forward to visiting this place again next year.

Thanks for your kind review CupyDee. Really glad you had a nice stay at the Mangaweka Campground, we love sharing our piece of paradise with everyone! As the campground is a public camping ground, sometimes there can be louder groups, however we do our best to keep these gatherings contained for all! Thank you again & happy holidays!

This quietly secluded camp ground is perfect for feeling like you're miles from anywhere on the spectacular riverside but in reality it's a very handy walk to a cosy Cafe with great meals and a gorgeous view of the river to sit and enjoy very reasonably priced beverages.
The facilities are fabulous with new toilet blocks and a paid, timed shower that was $4.50 and good and hot.
There is a basic cook hut for those needing it .
The serenity of camping right on the river was amazing, I would definitely recommend

My family hired a batch at the mangaweka campgrounds. It was as basic as we expected. A cabin with a bed, fold out couch, and basic cooking facilities.
Would we hire it again? Hell yeah.
They are building new toilets and showers. And hopefully a new kitchen will follow.
But we are glampers. So we ate at the Awastone restaurant, across the bridge. Where the food, coffee, and range of beverages was very good. And the staff, (who also do the rafting), were amazing.

Great location. The vista with the towering cliffs and the clean river are amazing. Clean camp with great facilities. Friendly sraff. Near the main road highway 2 but off the beaten track in effect. Superb location.

We stayed there one night on our trip to further south. The outlooks gave a very rugged and gypsy-style feel to the location. We found the reception from the Awa side across the river. There is no cookware, hot shower costs money and the toilets are filthy. None of that matters if you have a self-contained vehicle. The interesting part is the sheer number of fire pits burning all around the place filling the area in smoke and BBQ fumes long into the night. Whiffs of weed, no period of silence and the piles of empty beer bottles in the morning make the site unsuitable for families with kids and for anyone not enjoying the drug-infused nightlife of the area. The site is beautiful and with few upgrades to the facilities, the place could be great. But it is not.

We were there for a night of camp. Quite busy in the summer as you would expect but hey, it was next to the river, had plenty of spots and the most friendliest of crowd. Could spend days here no problem.

My husband and I with our two young grandchildren stumbled across this beautiful campsite simply by enquiring at the Taihape Fish and Chip shop ( also a great find). We had two pup tents and on arrival the friendly young staff explained the two options of campsites and it was an easy choice to stay at the one over the historic bridge with the restaurant. We had camped for 12 days and this was by far our favourite. Excellent facilities. A very welcoming info sheet without lots of rules. The swimming spot in the river was beautiful and safe for our 7 and 9 yr olds and the landscaping and scenery was gorgeous. Our snack lunch was delicious and we could have stayed another night. Highly recommend and telling our friends it is a ‘must stay’. Great value.

We stayed in our campervan at the more expensive Awastone site (over the bridge) and it was superb. Little bit of paradise next to the cliff and river. Facilities were excellent, hot showers, good WiFi. It was pretty quiet when we were there. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the lower of the 2 campgrounds. The facilities are very basic but as we are self contained we didn't need them. The location is stunning; camped under the trees beside the river and huge white cliffs. It was quiet and ideal for an overnight camp.

Came off SH 1 heading south and found a scenic river and cafe and picturesque campsite. Needless to say I had tea and spent the night! There were options basic, no power, or power or cabin. Peaceful, natural, friendly. Absolutely great!
