Our family was fortunate to win a giveaway to Awastone, which granted us a night's stay at the Pukeko Palace and a one hour rafting excursion called "Splash n Giggle."

The experience was truly remarkable! The family-oriented lodging featured comfortable beds with quality bedding, a kitchenette, and a shower and toilet. We had ample space outside to enjoy playing soccer and rugby while catching a glimpse of Ruru's (Moreporks) during our game of spotlight. We appreciated being able to go on a nearby bush walk and throw rocks into the river.

The café, restaurant, and bar exceeded our expectations! The staff were exceptionally friendly, and the food was delicious and affordable. We were even loaned a game of "cornhole" so the kids could stay entertained after dinner while we relaxed and enjoyed our meal and drinks.

The rafting trip was a highlight of our stay! The kids couldn't stop grinning, and our guide was both experienced and knowledgeable. We'll cherish the memories of this exceptional experience at such a magical location. Thank you!

Beautiful spot. The staff were really lovely. I was staying in ‘the Bach’. It’s a bit expensive for a solo traveler but would be perfect for a couple. It’s a really cute spot and even though it was raining there were plenty of birds around. Would recommend for anyone wanting an escape and a comfortable quiet spot. The Mangaweka Dam is just down the road and a nice little walk. The toilet and shower are about 50m away from the bach so this would not be suitable for anyone with mobility challenges.

Just off the main highway at Mangaweka, we found an amazing place to stay for the night with our camper. We didn’t have reservations but that wasn’t a problem. Trish was the very helpful and friendly office director, ( and the boss I reckon ) gave us the in’s and out’s of the establishment. She was very modest about the spot. We found out for ourselves very quickly that she had understated what a truly wonderful place to stay at. We just happened to arrive the day before the Cafe opened for the season. The next morning we enjoyed a delightful breakfast served by very obliging staff with good humour. Thanks for a very enjoyable stay.

A group of us stay every year, within the Pavilion camping area and enjoy the cleared area around the campsite, its always well kept and beautifully presented.
My partner and I stayed on in the 'Batch' to have a couple of extra days rest and also a bit of adventure in the area surrounding Awastone before we went home.
we were absolutely blown away with the hospitality, the whole experience was brilliant ..... we want to thank all the staff a big bunch for going the extra mile.

Had a really lovely stay, thanks to the host upgrading me. I swam in a lovely spot. It has to be one of the best spots for swimming in this stretch of the river.

If you like untamed beauty, then on a summer's day in Jan or Feb you'll find it here. Plenty to do, to wander, take a relaxing swim, take in the scenery. It was nice to catch the snippets of someone's celtic music in the evening, it really seemed to capture the feeling of the place.

Rafting is an option but it wasn't why I was there.

The host Trish is great and is really knows how to make you feel welcome.

My partner and I had the best experience at Awastone. Right from when I first enquired about the packrafting course and accommodation the communication was excellent. Our stay was lovely with views of the river and a very comfortable room.

The next day we had an exceptional packrafting experience. Extremely professional and knowledgeable. We felt well looked after and safe on the river. Off the river the cafe provided us an amazing lunch, tea, coffee and cake at the end. It just made the whole day the best.

The next day we asked them last minute for a shuttle to raft again and even though they had a big live music event to organise, they were more than happy to accommodate us.

All in all Awastone feels like a well loved business that makes you feel at home and comfortable. I hope to be back with a group of friend in the future. High recommended!

My partner and I spontaneously made a trip to Awastone and it was a great decision. Comfortable cafe, garden area and clean shower and toilet facilities at the main site. We stayed in our campervan at the the Mangaweka Campground (unpowered) - fantastic to be so close to the water with clean toilets. We were welcomed by friendly staff who all adhered to Covid-19 guidelines. We thoroughly enjoyed the Whitewater Kayaking and both felt very safe and assured by the instructor. Thank you for an amazing experience.

As always, the friendly team at Awastone made the stay a GREAT one. After a day on the river there is nothing like the HOT spa to ease the muscles and share paddling stories with one's companions. Nothing is better than the tasty food at Cafe Awastone, especially on a chilly Winter's night :)

We stayed at Awastone in their newest 2 person cabin for 1 night on our way south. It is a charming place with hospitable hosts and comfy accomodation. We would recommend a stop here, our cabin had a private deck area with river and cliff views. We ate at their small restaurant, certainly not gourmet and nor did we expect this (burger and chips type menu) but it did the trick. Thanks Awastone team, you have a gem of a camping spot.

Fabulous setting .. awesome food ..attentive staff .. extremely quiet and peaceful
We stayed in the Pukeko Palace for a night in a very very comfortable bed .. BUT... the Pukeko Palace was anything but
being charged $120'was ( in our opinion and we travel a lot ) grossly over priced.
For that price one would expect
A Television ( none )
A shower that worked ( just poured out extremely hot water whether on Hot or Cold settings so not able to be used)
No sink in the kitchen area ( crockery had to be washed in the bathroom handbasin. Seems that a review back in August 2019 drew attention to this and the Management response was that it was " going to be fixed very soon .. hey, almost 18 months later ??
No Coffee
No toiletries in Shower
Adjust the price to a realistic level for what is very basic accomodation rather than have it at School camp level and we will be back in a flash.
To whoever makes those Pies... they are to die for.

Hi Gary, Thank you for your honest review. Stoked you enjoyed the pie, we agree! We have not & do not ever intend to put Televisions in our rooms, we hope our guests will enjoy the beauty the area has to offer. We do however, provide free wifi for all guests. We are very sorry about the shower, it has since been fixed. The Pukeko Palace provides a kitchenette, so no it doesn't not have a sink, but is conveniently close to the customer kitchen should guests like to cook and clean a full meal. Coffee is provided, if we had known it was missing we would have happily topped you up :) We do not agree with small, single use plastics so do not provide these as toiletries, but we are working towards a more eco friendly alternative. While we disagree that the Pukeko is "at school camp level", we do hear and appreciate your comments and we hope to see you again. Kind Regards, Awastone
