Nestled in a picturesque, secluded spot near Canterbury, Broome Park Hotel charms visitors with its grand entrance and tastefully renovated rooms. Guests commend the spacious accommodations and the hotel's overall cleanliness, although there are occasional mentions of maintenance and cleanliness oversights. While the proximity to local attractions is a plus, some guests feel the hotel does not provide sufficient value, pointing to the pricey meals and room rates. The service receives mixed reviews, with praise for staff friendliness tempered by reports of inconsistent attention to detail.

We needed to book an overnight stay near to Canterbury and after looking at lots of options online (and an array of various prices) we chose Broome Park as it looked as if it would provide a pleasant stay in lovely surroundings. Parking was important to me and easy access to Canterbury as well as the confidence that the hotel would be as covid-secure as possible. The hotel website and other information online gave me that reassurance. After booking I received an email inviting me to book an evening meal in their restaurant, which I did. The communication was professional and easy. On arrival it is an impressive drive through the grounds up to the property and the house itself looks very imposing. Through the front doors you walk into a huge, wood-pannelled reception area with two big old fireplaces and various rooms running off it. There are LOTS of portraits of Lord Kitchener who lived in the house from 1911 until his death in 1916. The man on reception was friendly and helpful and we swiftly dealt with all the 'track and trace' information and headed up to our room. The staff have taken away a lot of items that are heavily touched, such as eiderdowns, throws and cushions. The room was spotlessly clean. Substantial paper cups had replaced crockery on the tray for hot drinks. The room was still lovely with two armchairs and very very comfy beds. The views from the leaded windows across the gardens was lovely. The bathroom had a double sink and a shower above the bath. The shower was quite antiquated (but clean) and I felt this added to the charm of the room. It felt as if you were staying in someone's home (with all its little quirks) rather than a vanilla, anonymous hotel room. The evening meal was high quality and good value. The dining room was again scrupulously clean and there were a few changes (such as no tablecloths). We only saw two waiters all night and the restaurant was quite busy (as much as social distancing allowed) but they were efficient and really pleasant. Both words masks. We had a drink in the bar after dinner and this again was a pleasant place to sit and care had been taken to protect guests and staff (no standing at the bar). A cooked breakfast next morning was also delivered quickly and very tasty. The cereals on the breakfast bar had been decanted into individual pots and other steps had been taken to minimise the surfaces guests needed to touch. Before leaving we took a stroll through the grounds and loved seeing the old statues and outbuildings that are evidence of its history since the 1600s. I would advise having a good look around for offers and prices on this hotel as I think there are good deals to be had. I was VERY happy with the value we got for the price we paid. It was a very peaceful place to stay and if you were heading for the Channel Tunnel, which is only nine miles away, I think it would make a good place to stay overnight.

Stayed for a few days after New Year eve. The drive, location and the first view of the house (formerly Lord Kitchener's house) were stunning, even in the dark. Parked up in front of the main house and took a while finding the large front door due to no lights above the porch. This was a sign of things to come. Entered the large reception area, wow, that ceiling. Two large log fires, just alive. Realised how cold it was when we saw the three electric heaters and the receptionist was wearing a thick coat. We booked in (all the rooms have names connected to Kitchener) and had to carry our bags up three flights of stairs to the second floor as there is no lift in the main building. Pleasantly surprised by the room(s) 'Connaught' as we had a passage with kitchen unit for kettle and off this was the bathroom, bedroom and a sitting room which had a lovely view of the golf course at the front of the house. Comfortable bed and sofa but again the rooms were cold although the temperature, at that time, was 10 degrees outside. Every room, from the reception, dinning room and bedrooms had at least one light where the bulb was out. There was also glitter on the carpets from News Year eve which was still there on 3rd January. Evening meal was included in our package. Decided to have a pre meal drink. The Kitchener's Bar consisted of the bar and three tables. We sat on top of the fire in the main hall. The two course meal was adequate and the service was slow although the dining room was not large and there were only 18 people eating. The breakfast was also adequate, nothing more. Why do these hotels cut down on staff. We found ourselves asking for most things (including the TV in our room which would only show certain channels). Judging by the cars parked in front of the hotel, mostly from Europe, this hotel seems a stopping point for the ferries. There are also lodges at this hotel which are a short walk away from the main house. Okay, if it is not inclement weather. Overall, we did spend most of our time touring the Kent countryside. I would only recommend this hotel as a stop over or if you are playing at the golf course.

Thank you for your review of Broome Park we hope you enjoyed the Kent countryside. We are working on our heating of this 400 year old building and have taken on board your comments about light bulbs which we try to keep on top of, as well as staffing which is always hard judging how many customers will turn up in the restaurant and bar.The glitter was actually form a wedding that we tried our best to get up but did take a few days of constant vacuuming, apologies for this. We have Freeview TV which covers all the terrestrial channels plus another 25 tv and radio channels, we are sorry that this was not sufficient for you. The deal that you booked on is our most popular by far and we normally get good comments about, we apologise if this was not to your liking or did not present value for money. Kind Regards John W

We have recently returned from a three night stay at one of our favourite hotels. We have stayed here several times, both in the main house and in a lodge. On this occasion we stayed in Kimberley Room, a top floor suite. So why do we come back to Broome Park? Location is great for a walk around the grounds, the house is grade 1 and the entrance and reception area have been retained to illustrate an opulent past. Breakfast sets you up for the day, there is a good choice and it is plentiful. We agree with some other comments that some rooms are a bit tired but we understand there is a major refurbishment programme being planned. However, on the plus side rooms are large, clean and our Kimberley room had a small kitchenette with full size fridge, very handy. Other benefits was a triple aspect view from the room. Water, tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. Finally, we found staff to be friendly and we feel relaxed here, despite it being half term week.

Booked online for a group of us to stay in one the lodges. £399 for one night bed, dinner and breakfast. I received confirmation which was an automated e-mail and called twice before we went to double check the booking had gone through and to ask a couple of points. One being trying to add an additional person on. I had tried to do this by e-mail to start with and had received no reply. When calling I was advised that because I had made the booking online there was no way they could make any changes over the phone, I was also unable to change it online and all they could do was 'make a note on the system'. At this point I confirmed that we had in fact booked the lodge plus dinner and breakfast and was told that we had and that dinner could be book on arrival.

We arrived and checked in about 2:30pm again asking about dinner and was told by the receptionist that that is what we had booked and that dinner that evening would be slightly different because of a function and they would be open between 6-7pm and then closed until 8pm and that at that point there may be a 'bit of a wait'. We were all under the impression from this comment that booking was not required.

Around 7pm two of our group went for a swim and spoke to a different receptionist who told them that actually we were supposed to book for dinner but not to worry she would 'make a note on the system' and get us booked for 8:15. When we arrived for dinner no booking had been made and we were told that there was no way that they could fit our group in the restaurant. Saying we should find a table in the reception area and they would bring our dinner to us there. I am currently 7 months pregnant and there is no way I could eat my dinner leaning forward on a coffee table.
We were put in the bar area where others were continually walking past the table to get drinks, an extremely uncomfortable situation for us all. We were advised our package would in fact be 3 courses but by this time we were all put of by the situation and only had the main course, which was either extremely overcooked or other dishes not cooked in the middle.

The lodge itself was okay but the whole situation and the lack of help from the staff made this break the worst one we have been to. I would not come back here and recommend to others to not waste your money.

Dear Amy This was valentines day and I was in all day and would happily of spoken to you. On check in you were advised by our receptionist to book in for dinner as we had a full house and were fully booked between 7,30 and 8,30pm so could not guarantee timings unless booked. You said that you would let us know about timings but never did confirm which is why you were not booked in. On that day I had a long conversation with the evening receptionist about how full we were and that tables could only be booked up to 7pm and after 8.30pm so I know that she did not offer to book in at 8.15pm. If you had let myself or anybody else know at the time that you were not happy with your food we would have replaced. I am sorry that this situation arose but this is why we try and get restaurant bookings in for guests that want a certain time which we advise on our confirmation and all websites. If you do change your mind and wish to return please come directly to myself who will personally handle your booking and any requests. Kind Regards John W

A very impressive location, spacious rooms, beautiful setting, very good breakfast, staff friendly and welcoming. Reluctant to dwell on negatives given the tough circumstances hotels have to work under during covid but.....shower stopped working on the first morning so we were moved to another (better) room, a bit inconvenient. New room wasn't cleaned or restocked on the 2nd and 3rd days. Dinner was agreeable but in a brightly lit room with no music - no atmosphere that could easily have been rectified. Tried to book the restricted use pool, no availability until 9:30 on checkout morning so booked a 1 hour later checkout (£10 charge), asked reception how to access the pool and was advised it was out of use. Little things at negligible or no expense would improve guest experience.

Dear Phil Thank you for your kind words regarding our breakfast and staff. this will be communicated to the team. We do leave a letter in rooms, reception and on our website saying that rooms will not be refreshed during these times unless requested with a few processes to follow, I am sorry if you did not see this. The pool unfortunately we did have to close due to pump issues which I apologise for but we will always put our customers safety first before making these decisions which i hope you can understand. Please do return to see us at Broome and please come directly through myself so that I can personally oversee your stay with us. Kind Regards John W

Don't bother to stay at Broome Park. Reasons for not doing so: Understaffed, the barman had a broken hand, youngsters who were inexperienced serving behind the bar and in the kitchen. The kitchen had lots of dirty cutlery and crockery stacked high in piles with the door left wide open for all to see. The
Service in the restaurant was very slow. Thef alarm went off 7 times during the evening and there was no sense of urgency or anyone assuming responsibility as to whether we should or should not evacuate the building. The water in our bathroom stopped whilst I was in the bath and then it trickled cold water only. I reported this to reception at the time but in the morning when I asked what was being done about it, they knew nothing about the complaint and simply said " the receptionist is new". The noise of the pump firing up for the hot water was atrocious and the doors were very noisy and woke us up when they were banged by other guests. The remote control for the TV set had no batteries in and they only offered terrestrial TV channels. They run out of beer, couldn't find a corkscrew to open a bottle of wine and although they do provide you with tea and coffee, they don't provide you with milk! We were not asked if we enjoyed our stay upon departure, probably because they knew full well that we did not. This property is an ex- timeshare and is very worn, dated and tired. It needs better management, qualified staff and some TLC and money spent on it as the exterior is very grand. Sadly, that's where it begins and ends.

Dear Vicki Thank you for leaving a review of Broome Park, I am sorry that we seemed understaffed. The area that you saw was a plate clearing area and not a kitchen but we will make sure the staff keep the door shut in future. We did have a problem with a fault on the fire alarm on the night you stayed. It was totally out of our control and we called our service engineer as soon as we could and he arrived within an hour. There was no need to evacuate as the barmen (actually manager) with the broken hand stood next to the alarm to silence it for an hour which is also why we were one down on service staff on the floor. I apologise for the issues with your room and this did get reported on the day looking at the log. We only ran out of one type of beer and had a choice of 5 others to choose from and the fresh milk was in your fridge with bottled water as we choose not to use long life or jigger milk. We are planning a full refurbishment in the future which will take care of the dated and tired look. We will take on board all of your comments and communicate them to the team. Kind Regards John W

We stayed two nights in this hotel last week. It's hard to know where to start on the shortcomings of this very expensive place. So I'll start with what was good. The building is beautiful, the views wonderful, our room sunny and the bed was comfortable. And what's not good? Pretty much everything else. Lunch service was dreadful (2 hours to serve one course despite the restaurant being completely empty apart from us), inexperienced staff (not their fault, but at these prices I'm afraid guests want more than a 'sorry, I've only been here 3 days' from the reception staff). And the bedroom was grubby with so many shabby areas. Furniture & carpets are in dire need of modernisation. The bathroom was tiny, with ancient bath/shower. The bath ran only hot water from both taps and a shower which ran either boiling hot or too cold. There was nowhere to dry towels, so we had to strew these around the bedroom. Our bedroom was above the billiards room, and very noisy until quite late. We stay in lots of hotels and this one was so disappointing. Of lesser importance (but some people might want to note this) is that this place feels more like a golf club with a hotel added on as an afterthought. Sorry to write this - but we weren't invited to give feedback at the point of checkout, so here it is.

My daughter was married at Broome Park Hotel in October and it was perfect – we had such a lovely time. The hotel oozes character and the staff were professional, helpful and caring. My husband and I booked a double room which in fact was a suite of three rooms. As Grade 1 listed I understand that the hotel is not allowed to install central heating but our room was well supplied with heaters which we could adjust to our needs so it was warm and comfortable. It was also well equipped with fridge, iron and ironing board and the large bathroom had an electric shower so plenty of hot water. The food was good and the service attentive without being overbearing.
All of the above, together with the relaxed atmosphere, ensured that we had the happy time we had anticipated for such a special occasion.

Stayed here as I was working nearby the following day. In mid-week in winter, there are some good deals to be had for staying at this hotel, so I cannot complain about the cost.

I did not eat in the restaurant here but arrived late and just wanted a sandwich, this was served in the bar, and was quite good, just what I wanted. However while I was waiting to be served I noticed that the bar was sticky, not just where I was standing, but it did not appear to have been wiped down for several hours.

The hotel is an historic house, so I don’t expect mod cons. However be warned there is no lift at all to any of the bedrooms. The carpet and communal areas look tired and in need of a refresh.

I was surprised when I was shown to my room that it was a suite - kitchen area with a kettle and fridge, lounge with two sofas, and the TV, bathroom and bedroom. There was no TV in the bedroom. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and I have no complaints about the quality of my sleep.

All looked very dated, and the bathroom was worst of all, the bath surround was rotting away from constantly being damp. The window in the bathroom did not fit the frame, so was slightly open and there was a strong draught and it was cold in there. In the morning when I had a shower, I noticed that it was a power shower rather than working off a system. It was scalding and I was unable to turn the temperature down at all. I tried to put the shower as high as possible so it was cooler and it was just about bearable. However within 3 minutes the hot water all went, unsurprising really given the strength with which it came out initially. So I could not rinse the shampoo and soap out.

I understand the historic nature of the building, however the rooms and plumbing could still be updated. The staff were all quite young and inexperienced. I did not eat breakfast as it did not start until 8 and I had a meeting to attend

Due to the nature of the building we cannot have a lift system which is explained on our own and external websites. Thank you for your comments regarding your sandwich and sleep quality. We do hope that despite these building issues you will return to visit us in the future. Kind Regards John W

if you are a picky, pedantic parvenu dont stay at this hotel. You wouldnt appreciate one of south England's fantastic country houses, it reeks of history, atmopsphere and comfort. Sometime home of Lord Kitchener, the house dates back to the 1600s. The rooms are massive if a little tired, the magnicent entrance lobby / hall is filled with sofas that have seen better days but the ceiling alone is worth the stay. There is a good pool and sauna. If you have no sense of humour or of history you will find lots to complain about but you'd be better off at a Best Western. John and the staff do a great job on a clearly tight budget - I believe the US owner has great plans so I would advise you stay before the price rockets for such a wonderful place. Oh, and theres a full size snooker table. A1 +++

Hi Yes we do not have central heating and the fires are coal so do not have the same effect as roaring burning logs but retain more heat. If your room is not to the temperature that you require with the wall heaters we can supply portable heaters. Kind Regards
