This is a very convenient stop if you are travelling on A1. The en-suite bedroom was comfy and well equipped. The food was excellent pub standard, I had delicious liver in onion gravy with plenty of vegetables.

Me and my wife stayed at the Avenue in High Shincliffe County Durham for two nights and had a brilliant time. The room was clean with an excellent ensuite. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Meals at the Avenue were excellent and the portions were large. We drove there and had no problems with parking. Bus service to Durham is just outside and comes regularly and only took about minutes to get into Durham. We would recommend the Avenue to anyone for a relaxed short break in Durham.

We stayed for four nights….we wished we could’ve stayed longer The staff and manager Emily were so friendly and lovely, nothing was any trouble Perfectly located in a quiet village, yet a stones throw away from the A1 M and the north easts attractions Room was perfect….we stayed in the room which had a bath (penthouse suite)….in the loft space of the building Beautiful views and only a five minute drive from Durham The food was, well…..outstanding My husband ordered the fish ‘n’ chips on the first night, THE BEST he’s EVER had!…..like nothing else we’ve ever seen He named it ‘Moby Dick’…… say no more…… It was not only gigantic but perfectly cooked…..AND came with the most gorgeous proper home cooked chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce! I ordered a chicken dish which was just delicious No wonder chef and owner Alan Bryan is so well thought of in the local area. His reputation precedes him…..we heard so many compliments from other guests, we knew we wouldn’t be disappointed Breakfasts were a-m-a-zing too!! Freshly cooked to order, proper set us up for the day……kept us going ‘til teatime I can’t rate The Avenue highly enough, deserves 10 stars! We will definitely be visiting again …… looking forward to it already!! P.S Fish ‘n’ chips was so good……he ordered it again on the Sunday!!

Comfortable room with king size bed and en-suite with shower. Excellent response to COVID - spotlessly clean with contactless check in and out available. Lovely breakfast well cooked - best breakfast eating out we have had in ages. Excellent coffee. Staff very friendly and helpful - even coped well with a power cut while cooking breakfast. Would heartily recommend - hope to visit again some day.

We had a lovely stay while visiting Durham. The hotel was clean and had everything we needed! The hosts were very accommodating. Good safety measures in place during pandemic too. It may be a little far to walk into town for some but we enjoyed it, it’s a lovely walk along the river. Our favourite part.... The variety and quality of food is superb!
