I do agree with some of the comments that say it's more of a really good 4* hotel then a 5*. But they're really only missing a few details (in my opinion), to be that 5* we're used to in Greece for ex. Details like getting enough and newer shishas at the bar. Or change the stools at the bar so they're all the same and styles are not mixed. "Stupid" things like that, that I think make a 5* an actual 5*. Other than that, I have to say they meet the standard. The highlight is, without a doubt, the staff. They're all so kind, helpful and try to make all your wishes come true. Then there's some diamonds among them, that really made our stay even more special - Ali, who takes care of the gardens, greeted me on our last day and asked me in which room we're staying and brought me a coconut! Sliced it so I could drink it and we had a lovely convo between. Another one was a sweet waiter from the beach who insisted on us drinking something and put it on the house. Then another one, who brought the towels for us to the beach, tucked them in the sunbeds, all with a big smile and good energy. I kept forgetting how poor this country actually is, so the only thing I regret a bit is that we haven't given even more tips than we did. They really appreciate it and they really deserve it.
The room we actually loved. We were in the middle between reception and the beach and had a nice view. The bed was really comfortable. I actually thought the bathroom was great, the shower was nice, we even took a bathtub a few times. I do see how it can be a problem if you're just friends and want a bit more privacy while showering, but then I'd recommend going to another resort if that's an issue. I loved the african style of the room and how everything was open. Our little garden in the front was wonderful and well taken care of and we loved sitting on the deck before and after dinner. Dinners are organized really romantically, with really pleasant live music and candle-lit tables. Food was awesome, and I'm quite picky. So much variety, for every taste. So many desserts, meat prepared in many ways, sooo many side dishes, soups, fruit, .. the pizza was so good! Fresh tuna steak and sea food was delicious.
The pool area is comfortable, the sunbeds' pillows are really soft and clean, so are the towels. The beach is, as expected, full of locals offering trips, but that's just something you have to roll with when you come to a coutnry like that. They literally hustle for their survival and honestly, they back off as soon as you say "no, thank you" (not as in Egypt or Tunisia where they don't leave you alone for half an hour). We loved the vibe of a really nice resort, with really kind staff, really good food, really accomodating services (we got a room at the reception on our last day free of charge so we could shower and prepare for our flight), really beautiful garden, romantic dinners (the one at the pool where they also put up a show and at the end half of us, the guests, were dancing as well, was definitely an unforgettable one), mixed with the locals and maasai at the beach, playing football in the evenings and doing some acrobatics on the beach, jet skiing, swimming and traveling all over the island; and when we came back to the resort from trips, the guy at the front always said "Welcome home!" - it was a GREAT stay. I do 100% recommend, for sure.

We have just finished our visit to the Gold
Zanzibar hotel and could not recommend it more. The location on the beautiful sifted flour white sand beach is exceptional with amazing sunsets.

Our room was very spacious and thoughtfully laid out with the central bed facing the windows overlooking the balcony from which we could enjoy the sunsets.

We were all inclusive which was extremely good value for money and the choice of food surprisingly good, very little repetition and a high standard.

But most of all I commend the staff. In particular the wonderful Ernest, Mary (Queen Mary), Jackline and Grace who made us feel so welcome and happy every day. Asante Asante my friends. We will be back. Baadae and thank you x

We've just spent a lovely week in this beautiful hotel; the location of which is at the northern end of Zanzibar Island. From the UK, it's not the easiest journey to get there, however it is well worth it. The island itself is a lush green, with beautiful beaches. There is a warm welcome on arrival, the service here was great, from the minute we arrived until the minute we left, everyone really wants to help. We had a couple of things that we needed help with, the service was always prompt. Our room was lovely, huge bed, with netted curtains that were always turned down nightly, along with the room being sprayed and a couple of mini biscuits. Standard of cleaning was high. We paid £300 extra for the sea view, which I felt was worth it, we could see the sun set over the sea from our window. We were part of the all - inclusive offer, there was a good range of cocktails, wine and food included. The food was of a high standard across all meals, all self-service/buffet. They have pool/beach nights twice a week , where the food is awesome, bbq fresh fish, meats and much more. The pool was always clean, with spare sunbeds around. The beach is a beautiful white sandy beach, with sunshades, and loungers (the beach guys were great - they'd help you choose were to sit and set our your towels for you), they even provide a beach bag in your room for use on the beach. There is a drinks service on the beach from 10am onwards. We also made use of the spa on a few occasions, Jane and the team there are very good, we had the full body massage, luckily there were some special offers on a daily basis. We had an amazing holiday here!!!!
(Evening entertainment was fairly quiet and similar on most nights, that suited us).

This was our first visit to Zanzibar and we were recommended this hotel by our travel agent and friends.

We travelled as a family of 4 and had to book two rooms as our teenage daughter (17yo) is considered an adult. She stayed in a suite next to ours with her younger brother (8yo).We booked 2× Deluxe Ocean Room Suites and booked the AI panckage.

Check-in was quick but our luggage took some time to arrive at our rooms. Rooms were large, comfortable and beautifully decorated. We had fresh flowers and towel arrangements on our bed daily. Bottled water is supplied daily as you cannot drink the tap water. Housekeeping was efficient. At night, housekeeping would spray rooms for insects. Our bath did not work, the plug seemed broken and water would just seep through. The minibar isn't 'fully' stocked, it contained two local beers and soda drinks and wasn't always re-stocked during our stay. The hairdryer plug fitting did not fit into any of the room plugs.
Not huge issues, just a mention to the hotel to address. Perhaps also consider umbrellas for rooms for the rainy days?

We frequented the spa 3 times on our trip, a special mention to the ladies who offer superb massage treatments! An awesome spa!

The beach was the highlight of our trip. Beautiful white sandy beach with enough shade and sun beds and the ocean with all it's hues of blue! The beach boy issue (not a fault of the hotel) was quickly resolved when they approached us and we started replying in our native language of Afrikaans. Beach staff was attentive and helpful. Special mention to Teddy and Moses for their good service.

The buffet was average for a 5* establishment. The food was good but repetitive. Not all food had placards (especially dessert - and could become an issue for people like me with a nut allergy). The dessert (and salad) room had a fly issue daily. Perhaps consider a cold curtain to this area? A special mention to Masoud and Samuel for the good service provided at the Kilimanjaro restaurant. We also enjoyed the live band in the evening.

Overall we had a lovely stay and appreciated the polite and friendly staff. With the best beach on Kendwa we will see you again!

Asante Sana Gold Zanzibar.

It was overall an okay resort. Nothing that impressive. The views are the island, not the resort. The beach is public. I can't go on it in the afternoon or I get stalked by men relentlessly trying to sell me things. It's hard to enjoy. In the morning the sand beach part of the resort with chairs was very relaxing. The rooms were just okay, the outlets were all European and we researched that they used a different outlet in Tanzania but not European so how are American guests supposed to charge electronics unless they pay to "rent" an adapter which is absurd. We asked to have our room left alone but it appears the hotel came in anyway as they made up the room when we asked not to and all of our shoes, toiletries, and bags were touched and moved. The food was average and nothing to write home about. I can get better soup at a soup kitchen. The resort did not have much activities nor did they offer to help setup any services other than try to force a massage package. We did our own planned activities around the island. The hotel only has a pool and massage area. A volleyball net was setup and there was a tiny closet called a gym with only a couple of machines and was packed with sweaty unmasked people. No one really wore masks here except the staff that worked at front desk or dining but at massage, bar, housekeepers did not wear masks at all. The customer service was quite poor and expresses very rude and uncaring vibes that the guests or at least that me and my family weren't important for them at all.
We have been to far more charming and hospitable road side inns and bed and breakfasts in the middle of nowhere. High expectations were set based on the plethora of "five star reviews" and "five star rating", the "private beach", the "private chef" , the "villas" and "ocean" and "garden" rooms. Talk about getting snake oil. I felt scammed. We had much better service and experience at other hotels on Zanzibar in the past and we will just have to return to those instead. We thought we would treat ourselves to this "wonderful place" based on these "reviews". We were very unimpressed and downright insulted.

Came back 3 weeks, spent in the hotel 2 weeks. It is the 1st visit to this nice, exotic place. Flight was long and difficult, what is normal. As soon as we arrived to the Hotel it was suggested to have lunch and take rest (after fresh juice, white towels for hands), while the room is preparing. Food is delicious: seafood, meat, a lot of fruits (pineapple, mango, papaya), pasta, bread, cookies.
Dear Sulim, a separate brilliant thanks is going to you! You & Your Team do real great job! All our request (mine or my Mother) you managed: thanks for great crab! Fresh and so tasty papaya, avocado! I'm so appreciate you for lunch, you prepared for us for the back home flight and travelling! I ate with great pleasure in the plane :)
Dear Peter, you take care and provide great support during all stay: I'm so happy I met you, and right now I know I can rely on you in case my family visit Gold Zanzibar again.
Separate thanks for the waiters in Kilimangaro restaront : Happyness and Zaina. Ladies, thanks so much for your great relationship!
Dear Ali, appreciate for your attencion, tea bags every evening!

Dear Ibragim, great coctails on the beach is a results of your professional work.

Several words about beach: this is one of best in Zanzibar. White sand, so amazing Indian ocean. Be prepared to the hot sun: take care of yourself not to get burnt.

Rooms: Gertruda cleaned up room every day with great quality. Thanks so much for the flowers, soap and your smile :)

Dear Gold Zanzibar Team!
With a great pleasure and from all my heart I'm very appreciate all of you for your care, support and dedication, you provide to the guests. To be honest, I do not expect this, but you suprise, you admire with all your work & efforts! For sure, I and my family will come back! Hope to see you soon.

The Chrismas & New Year time is coming: I wish all the best to you & to your nearest & dearest. Take care, stay safe! In terms of business perspective properity and great results, you could accept in such challangable time as we have now.

We experienced a bitter sweet time with Gold. What began negatively, was quickly resolved by senior managment and generously compensated.

To begin, Gold is a large resort and I believe this should be reflected in the name of the hotel as we were mislead by 'Beach House and Spa'.

Our original room had hot water issues which took over an hour to resolve during the evening, resulting in a late arrival to dinner. This then led to our buffet dinner being cold.

Further, the entertainment is atrocious. I personally do not believe a 5* hotel should even have entertainment. A simple playlist of jazz or any relaxing music would compeltely change the atmosphere of dinner time from tacky to sophisticated.

Instead of this, we were met with a live singer that I'm sad to say was very much below average. He would also play a terrible key board melody over the music which was quite frankly laughable at times but also disapointing when trying to enjoy dinner. The whole set up was cringeworthy and led to us eating out to other hotels for dinner (despite paying for half board accomodation).

As we were so unhappy with the start to our stay, we asked to leave the hotel after the first night. As a refund was not guarenteed due to booking through, the manager graciously offered a significant upgrade.

This is where our experince was turned around. We were offered a jungle villa with a plunge pool and personal butler. This provided privacy, and peace and quiet away from the terrible evening enterainment. We are fully aware that this is an expcetional situation due to COVID-19 and therefore it was at the managers best intertest to retain our business. Nonetheless, this upgrade made the world of a difference, and led to us having a lovely time at Gold.

Our butlers, Ramadhan and Kadijah were fantastic. Firstly, Ramahan was absolutly superb. He was attentive, thoughtful and went above and beyond. He would even organise our taxis to and from the hotel when leaving for dinner at other hotels. He transformed our stay and this will not be forgotton. Secondly, Kadijah was also delightful and thoughful. If we were not at breakfast, she would call us and ask if we would like breakfast brought to us - exceptional service.

All in all, what began negatively and below expected standards, was transformed into well exceeding our expetations.

Thank you to the hotel manager for being more than accomdating to us. It has been highly appreciated.

We pre booked our hotel transfer months ahead of our trip in hopes to avoid issues upon arrival in Zanzibar Airport but there was a misstep between hotel and pickup company. We waited at the airport for over two hours after immigrations in the blistering heat. We got to the resort after a 1.5 hr drive and were surprised how disingenuous and unapologetic their front desk staff was, so I asked to speak to the manager (three times). It wasn't until the following afternoon the manager approached us and finally apologized saying to forget about the situation and as a compromise, offered to arrange dinner on the beach. Come to find out, it was the same menu as the Gourmet Plan we already purchased! We appreciated the staff who set up the lanterns and gazebo from Gold Restaurant, but all we wanted was an explanation for why they couldn't find our booking and send someone to collect us at the airport straight away.

Apart from our disappointing experience with our transfers, the resort grounds are well kept and rooms are spacious with a huge centralized pool and just steps away from the beach. It's unfortunate that as soon as you walk towards the shore you're immediately harassed by locals to buy tours/souvenirs. Because it was so excessive, we mainly stayed at the resort and spent most of our time at Gold Restaurant/Ocean Dhao which is essentially one in the same place. We loved the staff and Chef Kai at Gold Restaurant as they were particularly welcoming each time we visited for lunch and dinner. We tried several local dishes like their Chuku Chuku soup which was our favorite but all dishes were fantastic!

Overall, first impressions are everything and our initial interactions when arriving at the resort were sub par and therefore, would not return nor recommend.

Lastly, as a tip should you decide to spend your holiday here, Gold Zanzibar offers several different meal plans. We chose the Gourmet Plan because it is truly all inclusive for all restaurants, bars and premium cocktails. We visited Kilimanjaro for breakfast one day which is their buffet restaurant and immediately noticed some of the food stations were unsanitary ie. fresh seafood was not kept on ice in 33 C weather, bakery station was full of flies and wasps so off putting that we left and waited for Gold Restaurant to open for lunch. Your best and safest bet is to eat at Gold. You won't regret it!

Great Hospitality shown by staff but experience could have been better! We chose the all inclusive package

Hospitality ..
was awesome. Staff very welcoming , smiling and kind. never grumbled
The House DJ And Pool Aerobic Instructor were super friendly
For this alone made our stay awesome

Clean , well maintained and spacious
Optimized towards couples (no locks for bathroom) . Solo travelers intending to share, beware . Not a problem for us, since we were a couple
no Dental Kit

poor to average across the resort , so leave your phones behind
rooms , pool, restaurant have WIFI

Food was good to great but eating experience was made miserable at times (especially afternoon) due to too many flies. If this a put off for you , be wary
drinks, cocktails are all what you would expect

music and entertainment
do not expect club style partying but the resident DJ and band are very friendly and accommodating . made our stay even more awesome
Sound system is old and poor to average

3.5/5 for cleanliness, sometimes you have leaves floating around

Massage and SPA center 3.5/5
Underwhelming, masseuse not so great

public area
Did not spend much time , also lots “locals” bothering you to “buy staff”
private area
This was better , and beds were well maintained

Locker provided in room , highly advisable to use it since housekeeping in and out of room

The superfluous amount of perfect reviews boasting of exceptional experience seem out of sorts when you arrive at the resort. The eyes are pleased by the views of the landscape and beach but then the heart and soul die. Rude and unprofessional customer service from reception, to spa, to dining, to beach, to management. We were greeted with fancy looking juice when we arrived and were escorted to our rooms and that was where the service ended. Rooms were average and not cleaned daily. There was garbage in my room when I checked in and when I called I was told someone would take care of it and no one ever arrived. Food was provided in excess but desserts were bland, meat was overcooked, and service was slow. The gym was a small room with no ventilation and several machines. The spa was a few tiny rooms where you were pestered to buy oils. The swimming pool closed at  17:00. The beach was nice in the morning. The afternoon was full of hawkers so prepare to be pestered. The resort chairs were broken that we had and beach towels were scarce. I inquired about booking boating and scuba and was directed to the beach. No assistance from resort. No currency exchange but my credit card and Euro was accepted. No customers or staff wore covid masks and housekeeping did not wear masks when entering my room, even when they entered my room with the do not enter sign on the door because there is no respect here. There is no evening entertainment unless one calls terrible lounge band which appeared to be employees singing and a bad DJ from the 1990s. The only thing to do at night is to go to other resorts for fun or play on your own phone in your room. Quite dead.

No the hotel does not. We used a local tour operator to collect us from our resort 3 days before our departure to get tested (PCR as required for re-entry to our home home country South Africa) at a clinic in Stone Town. The operator organises all the paperwork relating to the test (payment to the local government, clinic and collection of the test results). We used Sun Tours...I can also personally recommend them for excursions as well. Stay safe.

No, you have to book with someone outside the resort but I would recommend asking the concierge at reception to help you book because there are a lot of scam artists on the beach that will sell you anything. The resort faces the ocean but doesn't have actual ocean property; the beaches are public.
