We stayed here late October for the second time, our first time was in late August. We went there to watch the rocket launch. We stayed again in Unit 23, Hapuka, a little stand-alone cabin with a queen sized bed and a single bed, and a small bathroom with shower/handbasin/toilet. There is a microwave and an electric frying pan, and a small fridge. Also crockery/cutlery is provided. Sachets of shampoo and small cakes of soap provided also. The only place to sit inside is on one of the beds.

Servicing of the units is every second day so make sure you hang your towels up each day. We were not left any new shampoo or soap on Day 3 but the office was very happy to give me some.

There is not a lot of room inside and it’s quite expensive, but there is not a lot of choice of accommodation in Mahia. The room is quite new, and it was very clean and while it’s small, it worked well for us. The wifi is $5 per day or $25 for five days. The shop alongside the office does really nice filled rolls (as well as some other café type food). We had the rolls most days, the bread was very fresh and the filling was very generous.

There is a deck at the front with a table and two chairs. You can’t see the beach from the deck but it’s only a short walk away, you can hear the waves.

We found the owners and staff very friendly and helpful.

The reason I've given it an "average" mark is because for the same price in Whakatane tonight we have a one bedroomed motel unit which is at least twice the size of the Hapuka room. However I do realise that it's not really fair to compare the two as they are in different places.

If we were staying in Mahia again I would definitely stay here.

We pulled up and we’re able to get a powered site for our wee tent at this time of the year no worries. The managers were quite new but once we got talking to them the next day, they are lovely to chat with if they have time.
We’ve just finished a tent tour of the Hawkes Bay and all around the East Cape and the rating for this site is low because it was the most expensive by a long shot for what was offered - not even free wifi. $50 a night for two of us in a wee tent, the next closest to that was $40, and all other places were 32-40, so it’s fair to say that this was well outside the average we experienced, for really similar sites.

We stayed here for two nights. I had booked two separate rooms for my family.
Nice place to stay. Beautiful location. Mahia Store prices little expensive.
Pros
1.Great location
2.Nice clean shared showers, toilets facilities.
3.Good safe children’s playground.
4.Beds are comfortable.
5 A good place to get a good sleep and rest away from the everyday grind of life.
6.Good basic facilities in rooms to cook and refrigerate refreshments.
7.Rooms were clean, just the dirty sheets put me off this was a major problem for me.....

Cons
1.Management were very friendly on the day and did the minimal to answer any questions about places to explore in the
area, maybe they were having a bad day
2.Locks on both doors were broken but were fixed by my request.
3.Both rooms had stained sheets and pillow slips on all 7 beds.
4.Can not open windows on hot days because of the road dust from campers coming and going.
5.Onsite shop has nothing in it, such a shame would be nice if they at least sold the basics like milk, bread, tinned foods or
dried foods like rice risotto etc, toiletries for campers.

We will be back to enjoy the summer 2020 - 2021

We paid $ 87 per night for a powered campsite. The most expensive high season rate among others in equally prime locations. When we checked in, 200 something campsites were nearly full and we experienced :
a ) only one laundry facility - two old washing machines don't wash properly and one dryer. another dryer is broken and one camper notified the office but they weren't bothered to put an out of order sign. even though $ 4 charged for a single usage
b ) two toilet/shower blocks in the rear camp sites are not cleaned for a while. dirty , smelly and always near flooded. rubber mattresses could be useful as well as broken door locks should be fixed
c ) only one kitchen facility - is the worst. not cleaned and poorly equipped. rubbish were everywhere, fallen off from a fully loaded bin. occasionally blocked toilet smell floating around.

I am worried about the state of this Camp! Water is dirty brown, showers don't work, and the list is endless. No fresh water at all. I understand that Caretakers may be looking after this Camp but who takes the overall responsibility for the maintenance but more importantly the hygiene of this place. We spent two nights in their supposedly modern Motel and could not use the water or shower. The main Camp showers were not very good either, not kept clean after use etc. We couldn't boil the water because the Jug had brown sediment and rot inside. My husband tried cleaning it out and scrubbing it but the water from the tap just drizzled brown water. There was also an issue with the large sliding glass Entrance door that kept coming out of the railings, so dangerous, it nearly collapsed on me. When we left yesterday, the owners had not opened up (8am) so could not speak to them personally about Safety & Health issues. I have called and left my number but no response. I would like to have talked to them about the issues we had and I have tried to contact Doreen and was asked to leave a message, which I did but still have not heard from her. Such a beautiful spot but unfortunately let down by the only Campsite in Mahia. We will not be back.

I felt like telling people who were checking in to turn around. There is a reason there are no prices obvious on their website. I have only written one other poor trip advisor in my life but have to again for this place. We were 3 adults in 2 camper vans, unpowered sites $91, when I queried it later I was told I should have been charged $104. It is $28 per extra person including my 5 year old. Not very clean, no fresh drinking water. Put us right off and worst place by miles during our North Island tour. Will never come back and be sure to tell others not to. Lady at reception could not care less, in fact told me not even to bother to explore the rest of the area or shops, perhaps she wanted more money out of me for an ice cream. Thankful that she got her pricing stuffed up although we did have to pay $11 more for some drinking water.

Best campsite I have used in years. Lovely staff and owners, great sites for our tent and super close to beautiful beaches and hiking tracks. We used their tent sites and there was shelter from the sun under trees, close kitchen facilities and showers etc. Mahia itself felt like and undiscovered gem, quiet, peaceful with friendly locals and a small store and local pub. The next time I visit the East Cape I will use the Mahia Campsite as my base and then do day trips from there.

A well located campsite in a beautiful part of the country that unfortunately doesn't quite hit the mark.

While the facilities are available and appear to be relatively new they were definitely not clean.
The shower cubicles were very dirty, with a film of brown dirt along the lower half of the walls and lumps of old soap residue and hair stuck to the walls. Although I can understand that some dirt builds up throughout the day, it was clear that the walls had been given a cursory wipe over at best.

The kitchens were however clean and tidy, but unfortunately due to the fact that all water must be boiled before drinking at this camp site, the 1 old kettle available per kitchen was in adequate.

As I say, a beautiful spot but missing some care.

I would have to say this was one of my favourite places I stayed on East coast. I have stayed twice. You go in there and it has such a cool vibe, they have a neat little shop on site with yummy coffee and icecreams. Even a few bits if you need it. I stayed in a one bedroom sea view unit. I loved the view, the room was clean and tidy and after staying in rotorua and auckland I found it so much more value for money.

I loved the old school type place, the good old kiwi campground but it sure looked like some love had gone into the place since I was last there. Right on the beach, laxed back area just a place you must visit when in the area. I noticed they had some new sites, I am tempted to come back camping.

Stayed in lovely Mahia over new years, the camp was full and very busy. The office staff were amazing found us a site even though we hadnt booked and were friendly and helpful. The real fruit ice cream was amazing and staff worked hard to get everyone served in a very busy cafe.
The facilties were lovely and clean and staff made sure to point out all the new improvements made to the park. Eg. New tv lounge, camp kitchen both of which were clean and really nicely set up. The new bbq area was great for cooking dinner too.
The beach is just across the road so couldnt be closer.
Will be back next year
