Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed in one of the cottages, sparkling clean and nicely decorated. Everything you need. Internet, comfortable beds and a lovely spot to stay. Waikouaiti has gorgeous sandy beach 2 minutes walk away, friendly people and the Outpost cafe on the main road serves great breakfasts and lunches.

We went to Waikouaiti to attend our friends wedding. We were pleasantly surprised when we turned up at our accommodation to find these 4 gorgeous "mini houses". They were brand new and had everything we needed for our stay. We stayed in the blue house on the left hand side of the property. It featured a kitchenette fully equipped with stove, microwave, little fridge, sink and plenty of crockery, separate bedroom with double bed and a bathroom with a shower. Towels, soap, tea towel, dishwashing liquid, tea/coffee provided. We arrived at 11am at it was no problem, we were directed straight into our room. No issues at all. Quiet overnight.

Would recommend this place to anyway staying in Waikouaiti or needing to stop for the night while travelling through (just a minute off state highway 1)

Just FYI other guests at the wedding were staying in the older motel rooms and while they noted the decor to be old they said it was very acceptable and certainly clean

We stayed for a night in a "retro" unit. It was definitely retro - but it was clean and spacious and the rate was appropriate. It doesn't pretend to be what it's not, and it does what it does well and for a reasonable price. The reception was friendly and genuine.

Had booked with a few weeks notice. Thought $300 was a bit steep, but understand its usual for these places to price gouge when there is a concert in Dunedin. Arrived 5pm ..was told to come back in a few hours as the unit wasn't ready. Came back at 7pm, "2 bedroom self contained unit" no utensils, no furniture, wet carpet, bad odour, 1 bed, no pillows, pot plant in the bathroom sink Thought about leaving immediately but thought we wouldn't find anywhere else near dunedin night before Elton John. Owner went and got and old stained pillow. Partner spoke to him and asked for a price reduction given the state of the place. The owner Robin went crazy and said he could fill the room easy for $500 and we could pay that or leave..we left. Also overheard him speaking really rudely to his bar staff..didnt want to give the guy a cent. Not sure which was worth, the filthy unit or his behavior. Would have taken more pics but Robin was in the unit arguing with my partner.

We enjoyed a lovely meal with our grandson and a friend from Blenheim. The quality of the food and items on the menu were to most peoples taste. The meal came dressed with care and was tasty.
Friday night they have a fund raising meat raffles which we were lucky enough to win some.

Old style decor No mod cons certainly 60's 70's style so be prepared. Everything worked and its a place to lay your head. Pub next to the units was friendly and served a great meal. The owner was helpful and sorted out the wifi problem very quickly.

Arrived late on a cold rainy evening. The door was just being shut, however we went in and checked into our rather cold unit! (Glad it wasn't the middle of winter!) We were cooked an excellent fish and chips meal! The units were just tired, and very 1950s!

Certainly retro with it's big old TV, furniture and decor but clean and tidy and all we needed for a night on our travels. Interesting to travel back in time!! They also have brand new stand alone cabins for extra dollars but we chose the cheaper option. Had dinner in the tavern, a great wee spot and well presented. Small tavern but very clean and tidy. Lovely blue cod with salad and chips. Great service and friendly staff. Meal was superbly presented!!

The room we had was brand new and spacious. There was a kitchenette and all new furnishings.
We ate dinner at the tavern which is part of the same complex. I tried the highly recommended blue cod and was not disappointed. The serving was large and the fish was delicious.
Everything was first rate, nothing to complain about.
