The Best Western Normanton Park Hotel is often lauded for its clean rooms, delectable food, and stunning lake views, though it's not without its criticisms, such as room upkeep and a perceived lack of atmosphere in communal areas. While its idyllic location near Rutland Water is a high point for many guests, opinions on value for money and room quality are split, with some finding the hotel reasonably priced and others pointing out dated décor and noise issues. Service quality also receives mixed reviews, with certain guests commending the staff's warmth while others note inefficiency.

We booked a "Superior" room with lake view. It's true there was a good view of the lake through the window, but the window was small, incidental part of the room and suffered with condensation. There was nothing superior about the room - it had a damp musty smell and a generally tired look. On the plus side the bed was warm, clean and comfortable with good pillows. The corridor to the room had an air "freshener" in it, I assume to mask the smell of dampness. It was turned up so high the air was barely breathable.

The bathroom was also tired and had a warning about not burning yourself in the shower. This was clearly because the shower was not fitted with a thermostatic control. Although the hot water was fine in the evening, it was too cool to wash in by the morning so the warning was irrelevant!

For dinner, the Lamb Shank and Chilean Merlot were very nice. As was the chocolate pear tartlet and raspberry sorbet. The salmon and its sauce were however uninspiring. The dining room was just a bit too bright and a bit too cold for a really comfortable meal though.

The staff were always friendly and helpful.

We were given a reduction for the hot water being cool water, but overall this stay was just not value for money.

The hotel is in a quiet location right next to Rutland Water, with access from the hotel grounds. The courtyard rooms are ideal when you have your pampered pooch with you being large and across from toilet facilities. The rooms include everything you might need for a short break.

Stayed at Normanton Park Hotel for one night in June for our 42nd wedding aniversary. The hotel is in a superb location on the edge of Rutland Water. The room was great. Although we had booked a courtyard room (there is no lift in the hotel and we have some mobility issues and courtyard rooms, I believe, have level entry access but no view) we were upgraded to a family room- Uppingham, with a lake view, however, this was down a short flight of 6 or so stairs in the main building , when I mentioned my concerns as I checked in, the lovely guy in reception showed me the room and offered to carry our bags down the stairs, and as the room was really close to the reception and restaurant, and it wasn't a full flight of stairs, we decided we could manage. The double bed was comfortable (the single bed mattress was a bit too firm). The good sized room had extras that chain hotels no longer offer such as complementary bottles of water, and individual toileteries. It was really great to sit in the large conservatory to eat the evening meal and breakfast looking out onto the grass, mature trees and the beautiful reservoir. The buffet breakfast was great and very good value. However, the big disappointment was the evening meal menu and choice. It was quite uninspiring - just very basic 'pub type food'. No menu was available to download on the hotel website in advance and we took a chance, but it was all burgers, hotdogs, lasagne, fish with chips etc. with a couple of 'non chip' meals and salad, listed on a laminated menu with pictures of some of the food- reminiscent of the now defunked 'Little Chefs'! It just didn't fit with the elegance of the hotel and its surroundings. We didn't have dessert as the choice was also pretty unexciting. This hotel experience could be amazing with a bit of revamping of the food menu. Overall we would happily stay again, but maybe we would not eat there in the evening unless there is a menu change. All the staff were friendly, helpful and we did feel very welcome.

We went for the afternoon tea experience for my partners birthday. We were seated in the conservatory overlooking Rutland water, which was lovely. We thought it might be a bit cold but was well heated so this made it very comfortable, unlike other places we have eaten in more recently.
The food was served not long after we were seated and was very fresh and well presented. We had a large pot of tea and coffee and had paid extra beforehand for a glass of fizz, which was served without us having to ask. The food was delicious and we couldn't manage all of it. More than enough for two people.
We didn't get the gentleman's name who served us, but he was friendly and attentive. He spoke to the kitchen to make me a fresh plain scone as I do not like the fruit ones. He clearly wanted to make sure that we had a nice experience.
We had a lovely walk afterwards along the shore of Rutland Water walking out from the grounds of the hotel.
It was a perfect experience, couldn't fault it at all and we would certainly visit again. I can highly recommend the afternoon tea experience.

Pictures online showed old furniture etc., old wallpaper and carpets but I didn’t quite realise how bad it would be. It’s very dated. Our room was Morcott in the wing on the courtyard. Thought this would be quite pleasant but wrong. The room is so old and tatty it just didn’t feel clean. Hot water in shower took a good 10 minutes to get hot. Maintenance man advised you need to put the bath tap on first then turn to shower (weird). Two bath towels and one hand towels. No bath mat and a very slippy floor. Front door doesn’t close properly without you slamming it and has a nice gap in it. Guest information folder was mouldy inside. A well used plug in air freshener. Carpets smell! Beds are old and creaky. My duvet has a rip in it. Oh my god, early hours could hear next door running the water for what seemed like 40 minutes at least. Slamming doors, voices etc. clearly very thin walls.

Dinner was ok and service has been ok. Staff don’t really seem like they want to be here. Nothing over and above.

The saving grace is the location of this hotel and probably why they can get away with not investing. You’re right on the water and the buildings are beautiful (just not the decor)

This could be an AMAZING hotel if some money was invested into updating the rooms and food and beverage areas. It’s such a shame as it’s got the best location, it could really be something special.

Won’t be staying again sadly

I’d have preferred to tell the hotel team about my experience rather than leave a negative review but after reading others, I don’t think any action would be taken. So beware. The rooms aren’t fit to be slept in. My room had an over powering chemical smell that takes your breath away. It maybe to deal with damp. I had to sleep with the balcony door open even though the temperature was below zero. The walls are thin. You can hear conversations in neighbouring rooms and even snoring. Every door they opens and closes, even putting the kettle or shower on is clearly audible. And worst of all, the bedding is disgusting. No one should have to put up with these conditions. Hotel owners and managers, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

We arrived after 10pm but this was no problem.
Our room was spacious and clean.
There was a good shower over the bath.
We woke up next morning to see the sun shinning off Rutland water at the end of the hotel gardens, the lo,action is beautiful.
At the end of the garden there is a gate giving direct access to the lake.
Breakfast was very good as was the evening meal. On the first day breakfast was served in the conservatory over looking the lake.
Evening meals were served in a different area as was breakfast on the second day due to preparations for a wedding.
The location makes the hotel and for the price of £109 per night including the current free breakfast offer it is a bargain.

We stayed for 1 night for niece's wedding with our small dog. Let us check in earlier which was nice. Upon first inspection room was very small nothing special we stayed in the ground floor court yard room which was ideal as parking was right outside and good for walking the dog. Although dog friendly no additions to the room no bed no treats no bowls. Not normally expected but as was a wedding venue and a supplement had to be paid we was expecting a little something extra.
Once we returned to the room in the evening faults appeared no hot water had to use mother's room to shower. Room was surface clean but not thorough. Cobwebs and spiders in wardrobe dirty marks on bathroom wall, sanitary bathroom bin had no lid. Shower head broken and leaking, no pressure.
Was disappointed as hotel was not cheap £155 a night have stayed in better hotels with cheaper prices. Feel the hotel being a wedding venue they put so much effort into the wedding side which was lovely that they forget about the basics in the rooms but after a day of celebrating returning to problems such as the shower not working is nothing short of unacceptable.
Breakfast the following morning was no better although arrived an hour before it finished they were reluctant to make more food. Eggs were dry and over cooked only veggies sausages available after 15 minute wait so had beans on toast no hash browns. Bread ran out and no gloves or pincers used to replace, staff used hands instead not what we'd expect. Everything just seemed a little too much effort for the staff breakfast seemed like an after thought even when the brides arrived.
We shared our thoughts with reception and manager and other than calling maintenance for shower head they believed everything was as it should be.
Overall in my opinion the external of the hotel and the location are great for weddings but as a hotel it is lacking in so many areas. Would return for a day guest of the wedding but would seek accommodation else where.

The hotel is in beautiful surroundings with pleasant grounds.
The hotel needs a good deep clean the room I was in the bathroom was thick mould especially around the shower… i certainly didn’t feel clean !
Handrails were extremely sticky and felt grubby.

The hotel charged extra for an early check in but this wasn’t mentioned in any of the emails sent and when I questioned this with the head receptionist… she was just extremely rude… didn’t listen over spoke me … I wasn’t bothered about paying extra it was the no mention of it however she wasn’t listening to any comment. Very rude

The bar was expensive £3.50 for water but that’s my personal opinion.

The hotel is also extremely noisy so very little sleep was had… staff throwing stuff in bins until the early hours then again it starts in the early morning.

We didn't take our dog when we stayed, so can't enlighten you unfortunately. Great location for "walkies" though ! According to the "Doggiepubs" App there are 2 dog-friendly pubs in the next village of Edith Weston (1mile - walkable?), but didn't try either - have a look on Tripadvisor at the Wheatsheaf. The other one is the Horse and Jockey, but not sure if they do food.

Hello Chris Thank you for your question. We do not charge guests to use the Jacuzzi in there room what they have already paid for. If you wish to call the hotel so that we can check actually what type of room that you have booked so that we can make sure that you get what you would like. Many thanks Wayne

Hello Mick Thank you for your email. There has been no significant changes in staff at the hotel. We have redecorated a lot of the hotel with painting carpets and furniture this is always an ongoing process. Our reviews are extreme sometimes, but this is something we look at all the time. our occupancy level is at 89% and we do more than 60 weddings a year so that just shows how much business comes through the hotel against the reviews. We would love to welcome you to the hotel to see it for yourselves. If you would like to book I would be more than happy to book this for you. Please call me on 01780 720315 Many thanks Wayne

Can you walk to any nearby villages for a pub dinner from here ?
Answer from Margaret G

No. It's a long way to any other restaurants, being in an isolated position on Rutland Water. If you're staying there overnight, you'd be much better off staying at Barnsdale Lodge on the other side of the water. The food is much better there too! It's also nearer to Oakham which is a lovely little town.
