Friendly, quiet and clean camping ground. Lots of repeat visitors keep coming back. Good advice from the manager about places to visit. Handy 10 minute coastal walk to the parks, shops, wharf and fish and chip shop. The camp had everything we needed and more

Very friendly gentleman at front desk, told us about places of interest in Kawhia plus further down the road. Showers great plenty of hot water and not on a timer. All areas of camping ground were well maintained and lawns mowed. Very quite at night

The location was in a good spot, close to Kawhia township & the beach/boat ramp.
The facilities were clean & tidy.
The camp manager was polite and helpful.
Our cabin was tidy & clean.
The bed mattress itself was terrible. I could feel the slats under the bed. I felt like reliving a throwback to a school camp bed.
Other than that, the campground & facilities were a great value for money

Lady on the phone was lovely, we called up to book a standard tent site for 2ish nights around the start of feb and she told us it was not necessary and that they don't do bookings but come anyway because there will be heaps of space and that it's quiet that time of year. We said okay no worries, showed up around those dates and there was a no vacancy sign on the outside. The place was packed full. We knocked on the sliding door and the guy inside looked extremely annoyed and just angrily gestured towards the "no vacancy" sign on the door before he even opened it, rudely told us there was no space and then went to slam the door shut in our face. I feel it was poor etiquette to assure us there'd be space and then let us drive all the way there and turn us away with no care. Definitely would NOT reccomend this place, and good luck if you do decide to go here.

Visited on a busy long weekend on a camper van holiday. Park was very busy. Big sites. Tidy amenities. Owner, Grant, was super helpful and offered plenty of suggestions of what to do and where to go. Lots to see and do nearby. Definitely would recommend. And would go back. Thanks.

The kitchen and bathroom area was lovely and clean. Nice small campsite. Great to have trees for the shade.
I didn't like all the tents in the middle with the permanent baches around the outside. Made me feel like being in a fish bowl.

Small campground, laid back, reasonably priced, clean and tidy with big camp sites (powered or unpowered) and an excellent and helpful camp manager. What more can you want! NZMCA discount for stays of 2 or more nights. Facilities old style but very clean, and no charge for showers. Showers are decent...much more than a trickle! We are so used to expensive, site stingy, unfriendly, paid shower camp grounds close to Auckland that we forgot ones like these exist! Room for the kids to run around and join in activities/sports with other kids. Short walk (5-10 mins) to town, wharf, fish n chip store and pub. Manager extremely helpful, gave us all the lowdown on what to do around Kawhia and beyond. Also lent us shovels to go to the hot water beach not far from camp on the ocean beach side. This hot water beach (Te Puia Springs) is much better than its more well known counterpart at Hot Water Beach in Coromandel. Much less tourists and the wild west coast view from yr pool is fantastic and moody. You can find the springs in a direct line from the carpark at the ocean beach, then dig yr feet in the wet sand to feel where the water is nice and warm and dig. It has a noticeable sulphuric smell. Also take a trip over to Aotea Harbour (about 10 mins from Kawhia). Very beautiful harbour, big dunes on the other side reminiscent of the Hokianga or Pouto. There is a walk you can do along the beach to close to the entry of the harbour inlet (approx half an hour). You may be lucky and see the rare Maui dolphin! At the end of your stay, you may wish to take the scenic road - all sealed (coastal and Kaast landscapes) out to Waitomo, around the Kawhia harbour and turn left at Te Anga, then you can go to visit the Marakopa Falls (well worth it - very different to Bridal Veil), Piripiri Cave and Mangapohue Natural Bridge (very impressive), and Ruakuri scenic area/walk in Waitomo....all free. Then you don't have to visit the expensive tourist sites in Waitomo if you don't want to.

On our way north to Raglan, it was getting late so decided to check out what on first glance was a small old camp ground. Looks can be deceiving - as we found the 'older' facilities were more than adequate, well maintained & really clean. We only needed a basic cabin for the night & found it had enough room, was clean & well maintained. We were pleased that we didn't need coins for showers or cooking & the (limited) free wifi allowed us to email. The camp grounds are well maintained and sheltered as well as being quiet. Grant the manager could not have been more helpful. Once he mentioned the hot water beach (similar to Hot Water beach at the Coromandel - but without the tourists) 10 mins down the road, Mel was hooked! He then provided us with shovels for the beach, & suggested places to see & routes to take on our way to Raglan. Overall the camp ground is a great 'budget' site and we would be happy to return.
Thankfully we were running late that night as we would never have known what the area had to offer if we didn't find this hidden gem - Thanks Grant!

Great staff on site, facilities were adequate for a low cost pitch, it is a shame that there are a lot of very old statics around the edge of the site, which do detract from the ambiance. Very close to the beach, and a short walk to the center of the village. It is a hot water beach and there were spades available!
