Small, friendly and very homely. Excellent location. Looked out to the sea. Ate our meal on a large table on a communal patio looking out at the sea. We bought delicious steak from the village store. The owner was extremely friendly and kept asking us if we needed anything else, even including salad from his veg plot! It hasn't 5* facilities, but that wasn't what we were looking forward. It has far better service and atmosphere than any larger place could offer. Excellent shower and reasonable cooking facilities. Borrowed large shovels from the owner to dig ourselves pools at the nearby hot water beach (a lot quieter than the more well known hot water beach at Coromandel) a short drive away.

Bought 2 nights here through a Grab One deal, so it ended up at $50 a night. After buying the deal ,and a week before we were booked in I read the reviews on TA and was ready to cancel as sounded so bad. Our friends rang the motel and expressed our concern at the reviews and they assured us they would be clean etc. Grab One also said that if it was dirty they would refund. So we embarked on our weekend with trepidation! The beds were comfy and had new white sheets and the place was clean! Yay what a relief. It is old and a bit scruffy but an effort has been made to tidy it up and renovate a little. The shower is great, plenty of pressure. The towels are lovely, new and white and clean ones offered on our 2nd day.....no concern here about saving the environment by reusing

We wanted to spend a night in Kawhia and as it was getting late, we settled on the Kawhia motel. The owner was actually miles away and when I rang instructed me to take a key from the BBQ (I should have known then!) It was $100 per night and it is just ridiculously overpriced for what it is. I am hoping the bed was clean but can't be sure. Basically the owner has done the absolute bare minimum and has cut corners in every sense. For instance, the curtains in the bedroom are store bought rather than custom made to actually fit the sliding doors - they came up to about 3/4 of the way. The shower curtain was so long it sat in a pile on the floor. The bathroom floors were sticky and looked like something out of a very old school shower block. The bedding was interesting - we were
