Our stay of three nights was far too brief to truly experience the beautiful estuary of Kawhia Habour but Snow,Bronwyn and wee Nelson were so friendly and helpful. Snow will share his musical talents .... if you are lucky .camping at the waters edge, Kayaking the harbour at sunset with occasional stops to put Nelson back in, fish n chips at the local, thunder and lightening streaks night skies.... truly a hidden gem that is out of the way ....almost hesitant to reveal too much about the location in case the influx of tourists ruins the peaceful beauty. Scape to this little town and area for the way NZ life used to be - "no worries"
I wanted to stay somewhere nice with my wife. When we first approached the place from the road it seemed a bit run down but we were greeted by a very helpful lady who showed us the beach side cabin which is placed about 20 meters from the water with grass in between. To our surprise it was very nice and newly prepared with nice bed linen, our own SKY TV decoder - all in all a very modern and comfortable unit. We borrowed a spade from there for free and drove 5 or so minutes to the beach where we dug our own hot water spa pool in the sand and were allowed to use their hot showers even though we had already checked out. We then drove to see the 55m high Bridal View falls which is about an hour away. All in all a very nice place to stay - recommended to all.
brilliant place with excellent folks; very quiet and 5 sec to shore; 5 minutes hot water beach; 0,5 minutes to kawhia means a beautiful place in paradise nz next time I´ll stay 1/2 year minimum.
What an awesome place to stay. Kawhia embodies the west coast of the North Island and with hosts like Bronwyn and Snow [& Nelson] I can imagine no better place to stay. The Camp is undergoing some redevelopment and just gets better with every change they make. The area itself is the spiritual home of the Tainui tribe and it shows in the care taken in the township. The free hot pools at Te Puia beach are a wonder of nature. My family and I would highly reccomend this camp and area to anyone.
We have just stayed at Kawhia Beachside S Cape Camp and Cottages. We took our tent and pitched it right by the water. The view was lovely, we woke to the sun rising above the water and the bird life calling. A cool place to camp. Nice new bathroom facilities, cool kitchen with dishes, cups, washing liquid, pots and pans to use. 3 ovens to use, microwave and new fridges and freezers. Chairs and barbeques outside. We also hired the kayaks and went for a nice paddle to a little bay. Safe shallow water. Great for kids to learn to kayak too! They also have cottage/cabins which we didnt stay in but apparantly the beds are very comfy! If you want to experience some authentic kiwi hospitality and something unique, come here. Kawhia itself is amazing. 5 min drive to a black sand surf…
