My wife and I stayed at the Como in Ubud for our 30th anniversary. We intentionally divided our time between the Ritz Mandapa and Como to try and enjoy both vibes. We are glad we did, although we easily could've stayed all 8 days in one or the other. The coolest thing at the Como was the half-day Purification Ceremony that we did immediately upon arrival. We had an entourage that led us step by step through a genuine and lovely traditional Hindu water ritual that included music, a Hindu priest, and dunking in a sacred water source on the property. It was amazing and fun, but also a learning experience. The seating for breakfast overlooked an expansive forested valley, including monkeys that were swinging about. The food was satisfying and unique. My wife felt that the gluten free options were sufficient. The entire staff was lovely. As opposed to the Mandapa, one can easily walk around the Como grounds, though getting down to the ritual pool can be a challenge because of the many steps. Even so, it was totally worth it, especially for the private lunch that we had inside a curtained perch/bed cabana following our ceremony! Picture Cleopatra snacking on fruits, a Balinese lunch, and tropical beverages. The spa treatments were superb. Our secluded river villa was lovely. We did use incense to cover a mothball odor, but that was inconsequential. Interestingly, we learned that many of the RItz staff had worked at the Como in the past! Our butler was always available and was friendly. We underutilized his services, since we made most of our own plans. But he was clearly willing and ready if needed. I am forever grateful to the hotel manager, who enthusiastically rallied her staff to help extract an untold number of micro thorns from my leg using strapping tape. I inadvertently brushed against some vicious plant on a hike 2 hours away from the Como earlier in the day. I was in misery until she came to my rescue, bending down and patiently doing the "40 Year Old Virgin" tape rip until all the thorns were finally out!!! Thank you...

Dear E27continents, Warmest greetings from COMO Shambhala Estate! It was such a lovely review to read. We truly are grateful that you have taken the time to write and post it. Our ultimate goals are to ensure your satisfaction and try to create experience worth reliving for our guests. Delighted to know that we have accomplished that. As a resort, we are a big advocate of creating a wholesome experience - combining Water Spring Blessing and private lunch definitely fits the bill! Should you find your way back to us, you can always elevate this experience by having massage in outdoor treatment rooms in Kedara (meaning ‘Water Garden’ in Sanskrit). It is a perfect setting to have our Warm Muscle Wrap treatment – our take on ancient Balinese treatment where we apply remedy made from warming spices all over your body and then wrap your body with cloth to let the remedy works its magic. It took us couple of minutes of googling to understand your “40 Year Old Virgin” reference. Hopefully you were not in such pain as the character in the movie. Nevertheless, It was an uncomfortable situation, but all’s well that ends well. All our team and I are hoping to welcome you back to our little Paradise in the near future. Till then, we wish you the best. Kind regards, Ram Hiralal

I only wished I’d been here earlier. I’ve always wanted to come to this property even when it was first built and known as Begawan Giri. It’s taken me about 20 years to get here and perhaps the wait was worth it.

On the pluses —

To call this a resort seems unworthy. Hence the title a property. The grounds are extensive and beautifully manicured yet not overly so with the jungle just ever so creeping in. Just walking around the hotel grounds is magical.

The vitality pool and Kedara or naturally fed spring pools is a must to swim in.

The food sublimely prepared and very yummy yet healthy. Overcomes the urban myth that healthy food can be tasty. My son managed to eat healthier for 5 days which was a key reason for why we came.

The classes — perhaps one of the best parts of the resort. Yoga or Pilates classes with Monica is a MUST to attend. Yoga at the outdoor yoga bale in the rain was one of my highlights. As with a private Pilates class with her.

I came on a 5-day stay with my 9 year old. I was worried the hotel and staying guests would not be keen to host my 9 year old. Instead the staff were super accommodating & the other guests were gracious and kind.

We chose the Integrated Wellness Program that included a consultation with Dr Prasanth. You get a personalised schedule based on his recommendations and your preference on classes — loved this. Perfect for Type A people seeking a retreat from gadgets, poor sleeping patterns…

Lastly the hotel suite tasteful, practical with excellent, discrete and detailed housekeeping.

On the negatives — hard to find any but if I had to point some out… The rooms can be a bit dark with the wood panelling and soft lighting. The hotel brought in some extra lights for us which was again just underscores their excellent service.

Spring pools were closed for many days during our stay due to heavy rains. Jungle gym is shut indefinitely due to damage from floods.

In short — a must for anyone looking for time away from a hectic city life.

Dear kimthong11, Warmest greetings from COMO Shambhala Estate – a true Retreat for Change. Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay with us. We are so glad that you were able to enjoy our delicious COMO Cuisine, especially your son. Very excited to learn that you are able to experience the classes and the wellness programme. Monica and Dr Prasanth and our entire team member believe that this proactive approach, and commitment to the process of life-long learning, allows guests to make changes to their lives. We appreciate your contributions and are happy to learn that our team immediately set up some additional light in your room. Regrettably, we must close the spring pool and jungle gym for several days due to the weather as our guest safety is the top priority. On behalf of our entire team, we look forward to welcoming you back to the magical COMO Shambhala Estate. Till then our best wishes for you. Warm regards, Gede Suteja

Where to begin? As I’m writing this I have just left Como Shambahlah and having stayed in many hotels all over the world I have to highly commend all of the staff for their meticulous attention to detail and their fabulous, warm and kind hospitality. I was made to feel very welcome and absolutely nothing was a problem - even when I was panicking to organise a last minute trip to Gillies, Sunarta went above and beyond to help me book boat transfers and hold some luggage until my return.

The hotel rooms were stunning and I really enjoyed staying in the treehouse where the monkeys came to visit right outside my room. I highly recommend the picnic by the spiritual waterfalls which was a highlight as was the grounds in general with the Estate walk worthwhile to appreciate the beautiful surroundings by the river.

The spa was also amazing with some of the best massages I have ever had. Bliss! The exercise classes and activities were fabulous. I really enjoyed the yoga, rice paddy bike tour and hydrotherapy.
The food was so amazing I even bought the cookbook. I will most definitely be back.💚

Dear Tamara B, Thank you for capturing the essence of COMO Shambhala Estate. It is our goal to immerse all of our guests in a positive, holistic, and healing experience through all aspects – design, facilities, team member, treatment, cuisine, accommodation, adventure, and activities. We cannot be happier to learn that this was achieved during your stay with us. We will convey your praise and appreciation to our team member and Sunarta. We are also delighted to hear that you were able to experience Wanakasa Residence, a wonderful tree house above the Ayung River gorge and itself. Without question, we would have to agree with you just how special the picnic by the waterfall at Kedara are. Thank you for recommending this. Our Chef and the team will be pleased you enjoyed their creations, I hope you can try one of my personal favourites in the Cook Book – “Garden Greens, Leaves and Seed Salad with Avocado and Ginger Miso Dressing” – it is sumptuous. Along with the Estate family, we look forward to welcoming you back home soon. Warm regards, Gede Suteja

A magical place... exquisitly beautiful.
The food and spa treatments were outstanding and the staff anticipate your every desire. The older section of the resort from the Begawan Giri days is the place to stay... any one of the 5 pavilions.I stayed at Wanacasa 1 and after seeing the other pavilions, it's the most desirable. Having said that, the water pavilion or fire pavilions are a very close second. If they offer an upgrade to the private rooms in the new section, politely refuse - they are not nearly as charming... and make sure to visit and enjoy a lunch brought to you at the springs!

Dear FCA_10, Warmest greetings from the magical place – more known as COMO Shambhala Estate! Reading your review is humbling to say the least, and never taken for granted. We do work hard to make sure these fond memories are taken back home with you. It is certainly rewarding to hear our efforts are in line with our own high expectations. Thank you for the appreciation. It is such a pleasure to hear how much you enjoyed staying in one of our Residences. Perhaps on your next visit you can experience staying in the other Residences – after all, there are still another four you can experience. From the unique Bayugita (Sanskrit for ‘Wind Song’), Tirta-Ening (Sanskrit for ‘Clear Water’), Tejasuara (Sanskrit for ‘Sound of Fire’) to the majestic Umabona (Sanskrit for ‘House of the Earth Son’). We also happy to know that you enjoyed our delicious picnic lunch at our Kedara. Should you ever find your way back to us in the future, a combination of spa treatment and picnic lunch will elevate the experience. Something to think on! That being said, all of us at the Estate look forward to welcoming you back home for another truly memorable experience. Till then, we wish you the best. Kind regards, Ram Hiralal

My partner and I have traveled to COMO Shambhala for many years and continue to be amazed by the magic we feel every time we arrive
The location is breathtaking, the grounds are serene and awe inspiring and service and food are beyond ones imagination. Nothing short of incredible!
The very reason we return time and time again is to be re-reminded and reconnected to the very heart and soul of one’s journey.
Living in California or any city can often numb you to what is real and important. COMO Shambhala is Bali at its best and few words can express that experience
Recalibrate, your Body, Mindfulness and Spirit …. go enjoy a Breathtaking Experience......

My three best friends and I spent a truly unforgettable weekend at Como Shambala Estate in Ubud. From the moment we arrived we were treated like VIP guests. At reception we were greeted with a special traditional Balinese dance performance and then whisked away by buggy to our gorgeous villa compound. From amazing private yoga classes to a picnic lunch at the sacred spring pools my friends and I had a magical time. But the most memorable evening of our 3-night stay was the gorgeous surprises for my private birthday dinner at our villa. Judd the guest manager and his team arranged for a huge sign made of flowers and pandan leaves to wish me a happy birthday. It was laid out on the deck of our pool and was so artful and beautiful! The amazing staff also brought me flowers and cake and the whole restaurant team came to our villa to sing "Happy Birthday" to me. The CSE staff and Suteja the GM and Judd the Guest manager pulled out all the stops to make my big birthday extra special!

The spa is also a gorgeous oasis with the most phenomenal therapists with magic hands, the villas are all individually decorated and designed and super comfortable and luxurious. Both restaurants serve delicious Indonesian and Western fare as well as a very healthy menu option as well.

My friends and I were truly blown away by this property and the very professional and friendly staff who would make sure our every request was met and then some.

It is a weekend I will not soon forget.

CSE is the flagship of Como resorts. This famous estate is unique in the world and a destination in itself. The nature and gardening is simply mind blowing. I made many walks around and it never got repetitive, always something new to see. However, it feels like the whole place is resting too much on it laurels. 10 years ago it was unique that the kitchen suited every possible dietary requirement and had a holistic approach to food, but now this happens basically everywhere in the world. The same with the CSE Spa, it's not unique anymore, newer hotels copied it and improved it. What's left is the service and although there isn't anything wrong with it, it's less sophisticated than you should expect for the prestige and the prices you pay. CSE still deserves a five star rating based on the terrain and villa's, but it's far from being the best.

Had a rather lovely stay here but wish it was better.

Nice, serene ambience throughout. The best part of the stay is the breakfast - chef deserves a huge round of applause. Everything we had for the 2 days was delish and the menu was well curated.

Each room has a butler to addressed to you and you can contact him/her by whatsapp. Quite useful. However, there is a lapse in service especially when you have a few suites checking out in the same residence. SOP needs to change here. We had to wait in the sun for the buggy while the other room checks out. And our car even had to wait for our baggage to arrive! Better planning is needed. Nonetheless, our butler was personable and warm.

The walk from the spa to the residences needs a new route. Doesnt make sense to walk one big round.

We paid about $1000 a night (stayed for 2 nights). No jacuzzi in our room. Shared pool with 4 other rooms. Meh. Have to go OUT of our room and down the stairs to use the bathroom. However, lovely views of the greens.

30minute ride by car to main town.

Dear That guy from Wellington, Warmest greetings from COMO Shambhala Estate. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience in this forum. We are particularly glad that you made a special mention of the Estate location. The Estate is located approximately six miles from centre of Ubud, in a cultural-centric village called Begawan. Our lush and pristine location next to Ayung River allows us to create a haven, a sanctuary some might have said, where our guest can enjoy their new experience and draw strength from the environment, the care offered to them, and even themselves. Reading your first sentence, we feel that we have managed to create the place where you can enjoy yourself. Please do let us know when your plans bring you back to Bali. We would very much like the opportunity to welcome you back to COMO Shambhala Estate. Till then, we wish you the best. Keep safe and healthy. Kind regards, Ram Hiralal

My wife and I had a fabulous time at COMO Shambhala Estate. We don’t usually go so fancy on our holidays, but it was such a good idea to splurge on our baby moon. Our experience at COMO Shambhala was truly immaculate, and we’ve never felt as well taken care of as we did here. Special compliments to Karti and her team for being so attentive throughout our stay, anticipating all our needs before we even knew ourselves. The activities were all personalized, and all the instructors and guides were knowledgeable. Every meal we had was excellent—somehow, healthy and nutritious while being absolutely delicious and leaving our appetites fully sated. The villa was spacious and well-equipped—we couldn’t help but get into the infinity pool several times a day! Definitely a resort for special occasions—we hope to be back soon.

Ubud from the airport- about 90 min. There are many transport companies at the airport, but the estate will arrange transport (and charge) if requested, stay at the resort and enjoy activities there- avoid Ubud... no mosquitoes. I am not sure re extra bed/cot- i stayed in a villa- well worth it and very private

When we were there (February) it was relatively cold. I am not sure about the exact temperature, but it was less than the air temperature (26-28 C). We could stand it though and it was really pleasant to swim in.
