Detailed Reviews
We came in for tea today without a reservation. Upon looking back on the website I realize without a reservation you can only get scones or what's on the lunch menu for the day - not Anne's or Grandma's afternoon tea menus/packages. We were told they don't have the supplies for any walk-ins to order those items.
It's fun to sniff out and select the tea you'd like as well as selecting a hat to wear.
I think they must get a lot of people wanting menu items not available without a reservation because it seemed to give some irritation to the owners. As it could be a lovely experience, I would encourage the owners to be clearer on their website so that everyone knows what to expect.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to make your visit to the Island one to remember. It is so important to be clear these days and not to give out in correct information and we try. Perhaps when looking at our web page you looked at the menu items and missed the bold lettering at the top of the page where it says "Make Reservations" http://besidethetrail.ca/tearoom/menu.html I also have a sign on the Confederation Trail that trails off onto my property letting people know what is available: bathroom, water, fill your bottles, small lunch items. Then at the door is a poster 2' by 3' describing what you can experience at Grandma's Afternoon Tea Room, on this it is also written high tea needs a reservation. I've posted in many places that this is a traditional tea room - it saves the embarrassment of both of us when some one asks for a hamburger or fries. I'm just not sure how else I can make it obvious that Afternoon Tea or High tea needs a reservation. I know last year, we didn't require a reservation and most days I'd end up making extras at the last minute between 2 and 4 when we started to run low. Then there were other days we would prepare for an assumed 24 or so people and come 4 o'clock closing time we only had maybe 18 come through resulting in food waste that I try to keep to a minimum. Again, thank you for pointing this out to me I'll post a small sign at the beginning of the walk-way, just before you follow the tea pots through the path to the tea room and it will say what is available for the day and what needs a reservation. Glad you could join me in my afternoon tea, Grandma (aka Cindy)

Oh my... what a nice stay...would've stayed longer had I planned my stuff better. My daughter and I slept very well in super comfortable, clean beds...awesome cozy upstairs, bathroom was big & clean....coffee hot & ready when I woke...I think I drank a whole pot! I wandered out back thru a beautiful serene garden, with fairy homes, a fish pond & fountain and beautiful little decorated garden thingys and fabulous plants, beach sand... I even got to put my letter in the Fairy Mailbox! The whole place re-inspired me to continue to nurture my passion for gardening -awesome way to enjoy a quiet mornin' with a GREAT cup of coffee (I'm not a "eat breakfast right-away kinda person, but I did see an awesome looking breakfast served to 3 young French ladies).
We'd also booked a "Sea Glass Wiring" class...OMG that was wayyy cool!! Many beautifully handcrafted items in the dinning room too! Cindy & Guy are just beautiful people and we felt very welcomed and at home! Bilingual too!!
All so close to everthing in PEI.... would definitely return. Most reasonably priced! Thank you so much for a wonderful stay... wishin you all the best Cindy & Guy!!

This is the most charming Bed and Breakfast I have ever had the pleasure of staying in. Located alongside the Confederation trail, this is the perfect spot for anybody looking to have a nice night away. The rooms were immpecably clean and the breakfast was delicious. Cindy and Guy also had a map of the Island and some information packs for us to direct us where to go on our trip. The two of them have created a picturesque home that they generously share with us travelers. The room we stayed in had very comfortable beds and a great deal of closet space. Just down the hallway from our room was a sitting area with countless movies of all genres.
Cindy and Guy are truly wonderful people. Our morning breakfast was full of laughs and great conversation. If my friend and I didn't need to leave for Halifax the next morning, I am sure we would have spent all day with the two of them! No matter if you're a family, a couple, or a few friends, I would highly reccomend this adorable spot.

Sadly, staying at this B&B was the worst experience during our 6 day trip in PEI. If we didn't stay there, our trip must have been perfect, because everyone I encountered in PEI was very nice and accommodating except Cindy and Guy. Unfortunately I made a reservation before reading reviews on tripadvisor. Since they charge at least $50 for cancellations, which I think is very strict compared to other accommodations in PEI, we had to stay there whether you like it or not. When we arrived, we were not greeted and didn't feel welcome just as other reviewers noted. Cindy gave us instructions on shoes and door locks, mostly things we should do or shouldn't do and not what we could do or what they could offer. However, Cindy did ask us whether we wanted to have tea or coffee, so we said yes. When we went downstairs afterwards and told her we had come down for the drinks, she seemed rather annoyed and said, "I forgot". My mom was upset because she was served a very bitter, lukewarm coffee. The room floor was dirty with dust. We stayed for two nights, but they didn't clean up the dust box nor the room floor. I was very disappointed, because at the other 2-star B&B in Charlottetown we stayed prior, our room and the shared bathroom were cleaned everyday. The shared bathroom of Trailside B&B was not cleaned on our second day, so hair was left on the floor and it was disgusting. Overall, my impression was that they didn't like customers very much. Owners of other accommodations where we stayed, such as B&B in Charlottetown and a motel in Summerside, were not particular about small things and more willing to offer. If Cindy and Guy do this business because they like people, they should do what's best for their customers.

When we first arrived no one answered the door. We rang again and Guy reluctantly arrived and opened the door, didn't greet us just led us inside to checkin. When he asked us what time we wanted breakfast it seemed to be the biggest inconvenience to him to provide us breakfast at 7AM, we had a ferry out at 9AM so we had to leave early. Later we talked to Cindy and said we would provide our own breakfast if it was going to be such an inconvenience but she demanded it wasn't and made up for Guy's reluctance. The house was charming and our rooms were comfortable. It would have been nice if we'd been given better directions about leaving our personal items in the bathroom and perhaps given a printout about the code on the door. Guy went over the codes so quickly it was hard to remember it, especially when you're traveling with two seniors. Overall it seemed to be a comfortable yet unfriendly, awkward stay. I'm giving this one star based on the hosts making us feel unwelcome.

I regret hearing your stay was not to your satisfaction. It seems you got off to a bad start expecting a quick answer to the doorbell. As you probably noticed after entering, we have a bg house and it sometimes takes a while to make our way to the front door. As for the front door combination, many people make not of it on their phone or tablet upon entry. I usually ask if I need to write it down but it seems I forgot to ask you about it. There must have been some misunderstanding about early breakfast. We often have guest requesting breakfast around 7 am either for a flight or to meet the Ferry Schedule. I can assure you that is not a problem and you might have misinterpreted my answer. As for personal items in the bathroom, I always make ti a point to say "shared bathroom" when I show our guests around. Perhaps I incorrectly assumed that this is understood by our guests. Regardless, if guests leave personal items in the bathroom, we remind them discretely later or simply remove the items and place them int heir room. I feel we did our best to ensure you had a good stay. It is unfortunate you feel differently.

I have stayed at many B & B's internationally and I regretted booking this one.
Arriving at the B & B we were met at the door with the list of "do's and don'ts" of the establishment! The "welcome" @ the door and décor of the B & B reminded me of British B & B's of 50 years ago, cluttered and cramped.
Some points to consider, the B&B is also on the main #2 highway into Charlottetown, PEI. If you have the rooms on the second floor, you must take off your shoes on the ground floor before going up and if its warm, with the windows open, you will have traffic noise day and night. As for the breakfast, I would call it a mediocre/meager breakfast, you definitely will not be impressed. Overall I do not recommend this B & B, best to pay more and be comfortable and better fed.

I am sorry to hear, Terry that your stay was disappointing. I am confused however about what you feel were imposing dos and don'ts. If I was a guest in your home, I would remove my shoes at the door as a courtesy whether you asked me or not. The reason we make this request is to help prevent the iron rust that makes our soil red from staining carpets and other furnishings. Furthermore, rocks that get trapped in some shoes can make shambles of hardwood floors in just a few days. Most people find our breakfast more that adequate and often comment that hey had too much to eat. You were here for 3 days and you had plenty of opportunity to make your breakfast preferences known to us. As for the noise from the road, it is hardly noticeable from the second floor rooms, even with the windows open. Actually, the only sound you hear at night from the west-facing room that you had, is the gentle sound of the waterfall in our backyard pond. Our guest book and other reviews on this site are a testimonial to a pleasant restful stay. I am sorry yours was not so. Guy

I was so excited for this B & B, having viewed photos and e-mailed with the owner. When we arrived, the place was so pretty and nicely done. Shortly thereafter, I got the distinct feeling that the woman who runs it was annoyed with us, she just seemed to dislike us and wish us gone. Had I done something to offend her? I watched at breakfast as she interacted with the other guests, and felt that she just disliked all people. She complained about our failing to switch off a hall light (we couldn't find the switch) she complained within ear shot that guests ate too much breakfast, she snapped at me something awful when I asked her if she knew when shops might open on Sunday morning and so on. She was just hostile and combative with everyone. It was extremely unpleasant and unwelcoming. Also, she tried multiple times to sell her tea room, her jewelry class and her scrapbooking services. I felt like I was being pushed at all times to buy things from her. This was also very unpleasant. PEI has many other places, and I'd highly recommend choosing another place. I expect a hostile response to this posting, which fits the attitude I encountered while at this B & B.

I find it difficult to respond to reviews from people who hide behind pseudonyms; you can attempt to destroy an establishment's reputation with anonymity. However, let me address some of the issues you raised. We operate a Bed and Breakfast because we like people. You feel we did something to make you feel unwelcome and wished us gone. Quite to the contrary, we wish our guests would stay longer so we can discuss with them previous day's adventures and make suggestions for more interesting things to do. I cannot imagine snapping something awful about Sunday shopping. We are well aware of Sunday shopping rules in PEI and we inform our guests who ask that mots larger stores will not open until noon. We would not operate a bed and breakfast in order to be "hostile and combative with everyone." As for the tearoom, we mention it as we tour the house to make it clear to our guest that the tea room is in one area and the breakfast is served in another area. We only offer additional information to those who inquire and we do not try to "sell" the tearoom. I have no idea how you could have gotten that impression. The same goes for the scrapbooking and seaglass. Yes we mention we have a gift shop like any business owner should. But we only offer additional information to those who demonstrate interest by asking additional questions. I have no intention of being hostile in this review, as you suggest. I simply point out what we do and why we do it. Our objective is always to ensure a good customer experience. Guy Cousineau, Owner

This B&B is nice, well furnished and clean. The breakfast was good. However, the owners are truly rude and abrasive, which is really unpleasant in a setting as intimate as a Bed and Breakfast. From the moment we arrived we felt unwelcome and uncomfortable and this coldness lasted right through checkout. They are easily frustrated and will make it abundantly clear to you when they are.
Its a good place to rest your head for the night, but if you're planning on spending any significant time at your B&B there are plenty of friendly, warm and welcoming B&B owners on the island.

I'm sorry you were displeased Amanda. You arrived here with a reservation for 2 people made via a booking.com affiliate. You were 3 people and it was impossible to accommodate you in the room you had booked. We did our best to help you find other accommodations. We even offered you two rooms at a discounted price. Still that was not enough. You insisted we had made the mistake even though your email confirmation you had on your phone clearly stated a reservation for two people. I am happy that you found suitable accommodations elsewhere.

This is the worst review I've ever written, but it was a mistake to stay here. When we arrived, the owners weren't home, and we moved into our room cheerfully. Walking around, we found the place clean, attractive, with beautiful gardens, and clever decorating by the mistress. The trouble started when the owners got home. Without a greeting, we were accosted like children with our choice of parking place (we could see no other, even upon leaving), we were scolded for not locking the door behind us (our mistake), we were told we could eat nothing in our room because we might spoil the furnishings, we were criticized at breakfast for requesting a second cup of coffee, we witnessed a family fight while eating breakfast, and upon leaving were accused of trying to get a free night because we wanted to pay with a credit card or check rather than CASH. The materials I received from Bookings.com listed both Mastercard and Visa under the payment section of their instructions. On getting home I found a reference to cash (which usually means a check) buried in fine print in another column. This was a problem the owners had with Bookings.com and should not have involved severe rudeness to us. We would never stay here again.

You arrived past our normal check-in times. However, we had made arrangements for a selfe-serve entry. As we often have family obligations in the evening, this is a normal course of business for us and reflects the friendly, trusting nature of our operations. You say the trouble started when we got home. Perhaps it did. Put your self in our position. How would you feel if you arrived home to find someone parked on your lawn? There were no other cars int he driveway and the driveway is large enough to accommodate 7 vehicles comfortably. Howe could you not find another parking space upon further inspection? Ad to that that we arrived at the front door to find it unlocked. Your answer was that you had not turned in for the night. We try to provide a safe environment for our guests by providing them with a room key for the protection for heir valuables. You return this gesture by leaving the front door unlocked for anyone else to enter. You hint that you might we "watching" yet you did not approach us when we entered to find out if we were "supposed to be here". We asked you if you parked on the grass at home (no) and if you kept your house door locked(yes). Yet you cannot show the same respect to us when you are a guest in our home. It is perfectly normal and expected to ask Bed and Breakfast guests not to eat in their room. That is why we have 4 common areas in our house, including the use of the tearoom and breakfast tables for our guests who wish to consume a meal. Yes we are a cash only establishment. Your reservation confirmation from bookign.com said so. We also sent you a personal email reservation confirmation that also reminded you of check in times and cash only. You obviously received it because you contacted us to make arrangements for a late check-in. We are amazed to find, on several occasions, that our guests do not read. All the information is there for your perusal. Things became heated when you insinuated you had already paid and that we had already taken a deposit on your credit card. Again, your reservation details on booking.com said "no deposit". We had no way of charging a credit card and you said you had no cash; that left us with "i guess you are getting a free night" I am glad you were able to see the CASH mention on your booking confirmation. We have raised this issue again with booking.com and they are looking at making more changes to the system to help make it clearer to all travellers. Note, for future reference, that more merchants are shying away from credit cards because the ever increasing fees are greatly adding to the cost of doing business. Rather than pass those costs along to our guests, many of us have chose to stop accepting credit cards. I am confused about your statement: "I found a reference to cash (which usually means a check) buried in fine print in another column" I agree it might have been buried in the fine print and that is why we contacted booking.com again about it. However I do not understand how you can say "cash means cheque". If we wanted to say cash or cheque, we would have said "cash or cheque". Those are two different methods of payment.

Honestly, I wish I could give this B&B a good review but I never had a chance to even stay here.
The house itself was beautiful, with a gorgeous garden and lovely tea room, and it was located very close to Charlottetown which is convenient. (although on a busy road which detracts from its beauty because your view is a bunch of big box stores and gas stations)
Unfortunately, the customer service was terrible. I have no doubt that other people have had great experiences, but I feel that the hosts are unable to handle problems, conflict or criticism very well (For example, I am sure the hosts will come on here with a defensive reply to this review, like all the others,, which is fine, but it just makes you look petty)
Basically, there was a mixup with the reservations which was neither our fault NOR the hosts, but due to a thirdparty site priceline.com. We were a party of three, who (attempted/thought) we booked a room for three, but the room booked was for two. When this was discovered, instead of being accommodating, the hosts were extremely defensive and blamed our party even though we repeatedly told them we did NOT think it was not their fault. They were really condescending and rude, and did not make any effort to.understand our position as we simply just wanted to ensure we had a place to sleep as we had travelled from Halifax that morning.
Worst of all, Cindy blatantly lied to us in an effort to get rid of us. She originally told us she had a room upstairs available that had a single bed that wasn't currently available online for booking, so she could accommodate us by having two sleep in one room, the third in the other, and for a discounted price. Great. However, she then came back to us two minutes later and told us the room was booked. They also tried to get us to pay a cancellation fee of 50$ a night (we were supposed to stay for two), when the booking agency's policy is a thirty-dollar flat rate.
They also do not accept credit cards and seem to.be unaware of their own online presence because they didn't even know the B&B was listed on priceline.com or that it was listed as accepting credit cards and this is an extremely popular website.
All in all, almost ruined our PEI experience.

I am sorry you had a bad start to your PEI holiday but I feel you are unfair in posting two negative reviews under two different names and blaming us for your mistakes. You said " your view is a bunch of big box stores and gas stations". There are no big box stores for 3 kilometres. We also have a 1 acre lot covered in trees and gardens. From our back yard, there is nothing but nature. Yes the roadway in front is busy at times, but it is a city street with a reduced speed limit and pedestrian crosswalk directly in front of our house. "Basically, there was a mixup with the reservations which was neither our fault NOR the hosts, but due to a thirdparty site priceline.com. We were a party of three, who (attempted/thought) we booked a room for three, but the room booked was for two." I am glad to hear you say now the mixup was not our fault. However, that was not your attitude when you were at the door. I checked the Priceline.com website and no where does the site ask for # of people in a party. In addition, you showed me your phone confirmation (same confirmation I received) confirming a reservation for two people. We had no idea you were a party of 3. We went on the defensive, as you say, because you insisted it was our fault. "we simply just wanted to ensure we had a place to sleep" We understood that from the beginning. We took the time to help you find accommodations that would suite your party of 3 people and went looking for and printed a list of accommodations that had vacancy for 3 that evening. We also checked with a customer service agent at Booking.com to see what they had on inventory. "Worst of all, Cindy blatantly lied to us in an effort to get rid of us." That is not true, we checked our availability and we offered you two rooms for the price of one. You said you had to think about it. After 20 minutes, we got a text message indicating the room had been booked on line. "They also tried to get us to pay a cancellation fee of 50$ a night (we were supposed to stay for two), when the booking agency's policy is a thirty-dollar flat rate. " That was a mixup on our part. Our standard cancellation policy is $50 or one night stay. However, we made a special deal with booking.com for $30. That is not AGENCY policy, it is ours. That mistake was corrected immediately. "They also do not accept credit cards and seem to.be unaware of their own online presence because they didn't even know the B&B was listed on priceline.com or that it was listed as accepting credit cards and this is an extremely popular website." We do not accept credit cards. The on-line vacancy system has you book by using a credit card to confirm, it is part of their booking system on booking.com. The confirmation you received states under the heading of IMPORTANT INFORMATION that payment is in cash only. If you did not read your confirmation, you have only yourself to blame for being uninformed. As far as where we are listed, there are hundreds of re-sellers and websites that offer inventories of vacation accommodations. It is impossible to know everywhere one is listed since most of these are unsolicited. Our listing contract is with booking.com. We know that they have several affiliates. We now know that one of them is priceline. We investigated the way that priceline functions and we do not find it user friendly: the main point being that it does not ask you for the number of people in your party (therefore presents you with rooms that do not fit your numbers). Furthermore it ALWAYS issues a confirmation for two people, again, not very client friendly. We have made our observations to booking.com in the hopes they can exercise influence with their partners to provide a more client friendly interface for reservations. I am happy you were able to find accommodations elsewhere with our help. Guy
