OK, if you are looking for five-star luxury, steer clear of this place. If you are looking for an inexpensive option in a vibrant neighbourhood, consider the Alexandra.

All I can say is that those who have complained about the neighbourhood have misread the signs. This hotel is just off Queen Street West. Our taxi driver knew exactly where Ryerson street was. It's between Bathurst and Spadina. Queen Street offers a vibrant café culture and great boutique shops. The Alexandra is a stone's throw from Chinatown on Spadina, and within walking distance of the Roger's Centre (Skydome) and even downtown. The Queen streetcar is 100 metres from the door. There aren't many "dangerous" neighbourhoods in Toronto, and this is certainly not one of them. It may appear a bit frayed at the edges, even rundown to some. But it is as safe as any large city area can be.

As for the hotel, we stayed a week and had a great experience. Even the staff were friendly to us, although we might have been lucky. Indeed, we had a major problem that was quickly and amicably resolved. In one of the rooms (we had three) there was a strong smell of what seemed to be urine in the bathroom. We assumed that it hadn't been cleaned. It turned out that it was someone cooking something very smelly in the next door room, and it was filtering through the air vent. We were quickly and courteously moved to another room.

Which brings me to another issue. You may see this hotel advertised as offering "suites" or "apartments". Suites these are not, and they are definitely not apartments. They are two-bedded rooms with a kitchenette in the room. In some rooms (we saw four and all were slightly different) the kitchen is only a few inches from one of the beds. It would be very cramped for more than two adults and one child. Still you can cook (although there are cheap options for eating out, especially in Chinatown) and the fridge is useful.

All things considered, if you were staying a while in Toronto, this is a good option. Normal precautions are all you need to stay safe in this or any other part of Toronto.

What more could you want? For a rate way less than most downtown Toronto hotels you get 2 beds, a kitchenette, TV, air conditioning, a decent sized bathroom, and everything you could want in a hotel room. Not too fancy, but everything you'd need. A little hard to find, especially if you're from out of town, but well worth it. Would definitely recommend it and would stay again.

It's about 100 ft up a side road from Queen Street West which is where the action is in Tee Town - tonnes of live music (Rivoli, Jeff Healey's place etc), book shops, guitar shops, 24 hour food etc. Completely safe area, some reviewers made it sound like Lagos but it's virtually crime free yet without the soul squeezed out in the process. Taxis are plentiful and as cheap as chips if you want to head over to the CN Tower (which is actually ace) and chain stores etc, it's really a short distance, I walked it every time without a second thought. Being a short way up a side street from "Queen West" means you are within a stone's throw of the most vibrant and interesting neighbourhood in the city, but with just enough real estate between you and it when you're going to sleep.

The hotel offers decent sized rooms with en suite bathrooms, cooking facilities (for lighting cigs mostly), fridge, on-site laundry, parking, what more could you want for the price? And the location really is great. My only complaint would be the staggeringly hostile staff, although they got the job done. I suppose that makes my group sound like the guests from hell but we are a low-maintenence crowd - the most polite and simple inquiry was met with at best a glowering silence or a curt "in a minute".

So, location 10/10, price 10/10, facilities 10/10, attitude 1/10 (so if you can stand a traumatic stand-off with the woman on reception just by asking for directions to a cashpoint, it's a winner).

We came with my wife to the Alexandra hotel to relax... and we were not wrong.
The love and pride of its owners for making us feel comfortable, for paying attention to the details that make your stay unforgettable makes us definitely think of coming back.
Very good breakfast and excellent dinner!
A real pleasure to have known this place.
Thanks, Tasoula and Alexandra!

Budget hotel..very clean room and comfortable. Great front desk service. The area is sketchy at best….used also as city housing …having said that…it is heartbreaking. Residents are respectful…as a brave solo female there for a night..I was comfortable.

For the price, you can't beat it. And the fact that its not in a very touristy area makes it more interesting. I dont know why everyone is complaining about the area, its like any downtown, its fine to walk around during the day time, probably ok at night time - as long as you don't start chanting bible quotes or so forth. The staff were the only real complaint, they seemed lazy and unwilling to assist you. But compared to the pricey joints closer to Yonge and King St, this place is a no-brainer for the tourist with low cash flow. Btw, the hotel is just south of the charming Kensington Market area which is very eclectic and pedestrian-friendly, its worth checking out.

I am a torontoian but was having work being done on my home so I found a hotel for a few nights I knew this place looked ghetto but I wanted to stay downtown for a low cost and didn't see any reports of bed bugs online. When I got to the room it was okay, I really loved the kitchenette. And everything was good. I was enjoying my stay until I stayed noticing bites on my family and I. Then we flipped the mattress and bam bed bugs everywhere. We caught one and showed the front desk they didn't care at ALL. I was shocked, It was 2am
So going anywhere else
With my five year old was impossible. So I had to stay up all night and protect her while she slept it was the worst night of my life. When we checked out in the morning there was another employee there and i told her and she didnt seem to care either. After We had to wash all our stuff and dry. To ensure we don't bring them home with us, that night has ruined me I can't stop thinking of it and feeling itchy. STAY AWAY NOT WORTH THE CHEAP PRICE. PLEASE

We are very sorry you had a bad experience at our hotel. Our hotel does not have a pest problem. We work hard to keep the building well-maintained and clean and this includes pro-active pest control. However, there obviously was a problem with your room and we apologize and are having it professionally treated. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

On May 29 I phoned and booked two rooms, I was given confirmation numbers and they also emailed as requested the confirmation numbers. We went to check in and were told they had no record of the rooms being booked, yet one of the men there did admit to remembering the phone call. After a little while we were offered one room for a party of 4 to share as they stated they were fully booked. They were told that was not acceptable and suddenly they offered us two rooms, when questioned as to why their was now a second room one of the gentleman said he would take his chances. We proceeded to pay and after we payed we were asked for a further $100 per room each as an additional fee of some sort for the room for the night, which I thought was rather odd as this cost was not mentioned when booking the rooms . It seemed very shady to us and I did tell them that had this charge been mentioned at the time of booking the rooms it would not be a problem but the timing just made it seem rather shady to me. We requested our payment for the rooms be returned. The only reason this motel was even considered was the fact that it was recommended by a nearby Hospital, the hospital was informed as to what occured. I will not recommend this Hotel to anyone.

We are very sorry for the problems you had when trying to check into the hotel. We work very hard to manage our availability and obviously made a serious error with your reservation. As with all local hotels we do require a security deposit, and accept credit, debit or cash. This is refunded on check out. Again, I apologize, and hope it was not too much of a problem to find alternative accommodations.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Alexandra from 8/3 to 8/7. I requested an early check-in because we were driving from NYC after work and arrived at 4am. Michael at the front desk was very helpful and he had the early check-in note on file and there was a room available for us which was a blessing. As others have said, the rooms are simple but efficient with a small fridge, microwave, toaster and mini stove. The air conditioner worked wonderfully. The T.V. worked with no problems. The wifi was spotty, I brought it to the attention of the front desk and they were very attentive in getting the issue resolved. Even the coffee at the front desk was great. The linens and towels were very clean, no bedbugs here (yes, I inspected). The area is quiet, I didn't feel threatened on any streets at any given time of day or night. The shops in the area were great and the sole purpose of this trip was to party at Caribana so we really didn't stay in the room much. I did do laundry before we checked out and ironed clothes as well, everything worked with no problem. We slept well, it was quite peaceful. I'd stay here again, I don't need the big name hotel rooms to have a good time, besides, when you're in town to party, that's what you should do! We were in walking distance to Simcoe St. where our friend lives so that was a plus!
Kudos to the staff for being so pleasant and housekeeping for being so trustworthy. We left our iphone, iPad, money and canon T3i camera out and nothing went missing. Alexandra, you will see me again!

We pre-paid for this hotel on Expedia. It was the only budget option we could find that was cheap and was anywhere remotely near the centre of Toronto and had acceptable reviews on Tripadvisor. We found out that it falls somewhere between the categories of upmarket hostel and budget hotel.

We arrived early but checked in without problem. The rooms were small and ours overlooked a school play yard, which got quite noisy during the day when the children were out playing. We booked a twin room and got one double bed and one single bed, both sleepable-in. The kitchenette is a sink and a couple of electric rings and there were enough cooking and eating utensils to make a basic meal; it could be useful if you are trying to save money. The room had cable TV. The bathroom's air vent system seemed to be broken (or missing?). Maid service was fine.

The Queen Street environment was, I thought, quite lively, entertaining and certainly safer than the Camden area in my hometown London, which I would compare it with. The hotel was a 5 minute walk from Queen Street down a road that initially looks dodgy but it is really a residential area and there are plenty of nice cars parked on it.

I would recommend this hotel for younger, budget and independent-minded travellers who want to be near the attractions of Toronto and don't mind basic bedsit-style rooms and slightly snooty staff. Do not book into this hotel if you want comfort, great service or isolation from others. Otherwise, it’s perfectly acceptable.
