We booked this hotel in Toronto as we wanted to be in a central location and the fact it was a jazz bar.. it exceeded our expectations!! We had a basic but clean room everything we needed and breakfast was included.
We were able to walk to pretty much all the tourist spots we wanted to see from here which was really handy and we got the organised bus trip to Niagara Falls from just nearby.
Russ the night guy was really friendly gave us loads of info and looked after us well
All in all a great little place to stay at very reasonable rates

Small basic functional rooms but very friendly and helpful staff. There's a very limited menu and food is very obviously cooked from frozen so it's not great, but there are lots of other eateries nearby.  You're probably here for the blues and jazz though right so these things won't matter so much. Good prices for Toronto downtown which has a relaxed positive vibe about it. Traffic is busy during the week so allow lots of transfer time. The blues nights and the jazz jam night are excellent and worth the entry fee even though your a hotel guest. This is a handy and fun place to stay but not for more than a couple of nights would be my recommendation. Following my visit the hotel asked for feedback, here's my response for additional info;

I stayed one night at Rex and would like to give you the following feedback, intended to be constructive.

Room
The writing desk and two old office chairs are unnecessary clutter. I would recommend removing them and placing bedside cabinets at either side of the bed. I would also dispose of the old lamp on the desk. The shower looks a little cobbled together although it works a treat.

Check-in was good and quick.  The staff were very helpful and professional, other than the female night staff who seemed to spend her whole shift on the telephone to friends.

Food menu was very limited. Breakfast was good and served piping hot, try adding beans perhaps.  Chicken sandwich was acceptable but over cooked and very obviously cooked from frozen. More options would be good. Chicken wings were very good but two sauce options is not enough.

Price increases by $1 at certain times!  Come on now, that's nickel and diming your customers and hated by us all.  Keep the prices at the higher price and use the money to improve the quality and choices.
Jam night was excellent and probably the main reason people stay here. As a hotel guest it felt wrong that I had to pay an admission fee.

Overall I'd stay at Rex again but I'd eat elsewhere. The place seems like it's being run by somebody who scrimps and scrapes, somebody who hasn't adapted to market trends over the last 30 years. It needs a modern eye and a little investment to bring it up to a decent standard.

I truly hope this helps and wish you every success.

We stayed two nights at The Rex Hotel in Toronto, and were very pleased with the rooms. The rooms are small, but the beds are comfortable, and there is TV and AC in the rooms. Prices are quite reasonable - we spent $125 US a night for a double room with a bathroom, but you can go cheaper if you want the bathroom down the hall. There are virtually no amenities, no elevator, no real front desk services, and breakfast doesn't start until 9:30, but you can get it all day long.(?) But the location is great - easy walk to Union Station, CN Tower, and the stadiums - with lots of choices for food nearby. The entrance to the hotel is around the corner on St. Patrick St., past the entrance to the jazz club.

my wife and I went on Saturday to catch the early show (7PM) and have something to eat. Menu is basic bar food and value priced. Lots of options my selection was very good. Music is always good and admission is free. The musicians pass the hat for tips - any contribution is voluntary. Saturday show was very good - Neon Eagles - jazz guitar ensemble.

I’ve been visiting The Rex bar for its music performances for years while forgetting/not registering it’s also an hotel.

In February 2023 a booking mixup at another Toronto establishment led to a very panicked, last minute (day-of) reservation and arrival at the Rex. Great, efficient and very hospitable welcome plus the unexpected bonus of an early checkin soothed my ruffled feathers :).

I had a newly renovated (?) double room on the second floor with private bathroom. All impeccable clean and very comfortable and very little noise from the bar (I could hear the music but it was not intrusive).

The added bonus of being able to leave my luggage (free) after checkout for later collection was much appreciated.

I've given the place two stars instead of one as the room, staff, location and even the shared toilets and bathroom were all perfectly fine. Sure, you can't beat the price in downtown Toronto, but it comes with one major draw drawback: the noise!!!

The hotel is located right above a jazz club that has live music played until 23:00 pm. Forget about going to sleep earlier! Furthermore, you can practically hear everything that happens in the street just below (this is Toronto's entertainment district) or in your neighbors' room, through the very thin walls...

I guess I should have guessed this would be the situation from the fact that the hotel is located above a jazz club, however it did not reflect in the reviews for some reason. Be warned though!

The Rex is full of character in a town dominated by bland glass boxes. The hotel rooms are above a jazz club - the same business - but are not noisy. My room was perfectly comfortable. Shared showers and toilets were clean. The location is as good as you get.

This hotel is way overpriced (170 Dollars a night!!!) for what you get. The room I stayed in was noisy, everything was outdated and worn down. Hooks, one lightbulb and the extra blanket were missing. The shower was cleaned, but still gross, because it was old and made of cracked plastic. The bed was very small and all the furniture looked randomly put together, it was not cosy at all. Also, breakfast was not included. 2 stars for location and the friendly staff.

The jazz bar was lovely with excellent music. Such a shame that hotel guests have to pay to attend - it really should be a perk of staying. Nice food, basic and reasonably priced. Friendly bar staff.
The hotel itself fell way below expectations I'm afraid. No lift, and no assistance with luggage, not really a problem, but not very welcoming. Very small dingy room. Very small bed with a very thin mattress. No cupboard or hanging space. Very noisy from the street. Really needs decent double glazing. Small shower room with black tiles which hide the fact that it could be cleaned a bit more thoroughly. We had a double room with shower. The public bathroom didn't look great. Very drab decor throughout. No tea/coffee facilities. It did have a TV and a hairdryer. I've stayed in basic hotels before, but this one really needs some TLC. It is in a good location with a large public carpark next door (we had a hire car, so this was good). It really could be lovely if it was given some attention. The price was good.

Good location in downtown Toronto, for the location cheap for the amenities expensive.Receptionist leaves at 23.00 you have to deal with somebody from the bar after that. Staff seemed to be cool tough, no problems there.Room ,however looked like was outdated already in the '50's , bathroom too.Size wasn't an issue for us compared with some Asian location was more than OK.Bed on the smaller size but not uncomfortable. However we found a piece of used bad aid sticking to our very old blanket.I don't know what to say about that ,it's not the end of the world but still....We stayed in a room with private bathroom but we seen common bathroom on the hallways. The place seemed pretty popular tough, all booked, probably because of the location and downstairs venues. They keep your luggage for free for a few hours ,really nice, the morning guy from the bar was really helpful and friendly.Overall not a bad experience but have to be prepared for the "room shock". No elevators in case same needs to know.

I left my luggage in their secure room for half a day. I just checked with them the night before. I had no trouble finding someone to retrieve it.

Not to my knowledge, no. There may be on-street parking nearby, or a public car-park. It would be best to give them a call.
