We mainly used this motel as a place to sleep as we had plans out & about in Niagara Falls. Yes it's on a busy street, but after 9pm, maybe 10pm, the noise died down quite a bit. Easy to get to, once you get off the QEW. Didn't really interact w/front desk as we did a late check in so I can't comment there. Bed was comfy, pillows were alright. Room was perfect size for just me and my husband. Close to restaurants & a grocery store couple blocks away. Price was amazing considering it was summer time in Niagara Falls. We paid $330, after taxes etc... for 2 nights, and that's what A LOT of hotels down there charges for 1 night before taxes etc... I only heard our neighbours for about 15 minutes on our second night, otherwise didn't hear anyone.

This motel is just a tad off the beaten path which is actually quite refreshing! Although it is an older property and the rooms are smaller than the chain properties, our room was clean and comfortable and very affordable. Our host was on site and available. Our only suggestion to our host would be to consider adding an outside covered space with foliage and furniture away from the road where guests can enjoy fresh air! We would absolutely stay here again!

(Review from a 20 year old female) When pulling up to the motel, I was shocked, I thought I booked the wrong place! (Because of the outside appearance) - but don't judge the book by it's cover! Step inside and it is such a BEAUTIFUL place with a great homie feeling, I was pleasantly surprised! The receptionist is great, she was very helpful, very nice, and loves to chat! Highly recommend stay here also because of the amazing affordable price! The one and only downside is that it's quite a walk to the falls and main strip, but you can always drive and park at the casino for only $5 for the whole day! Hope this review helped :)

Good - Motel has been renovated. Everything is relatively new. Large window for room. Bed was comfortable. Room had good aesthetics with updated touches for furniture.

The Bad - Unfortunately, the Bad is the owners removed all the air conditioners (A/C) from the hotel rooms. Consequently, the room was uncomfortable because it got hot and humid in October. This leads to the Ugly.

The Ugly - As the window had to be left open. The motel is on McLeod Road, which is a very busy street. So, because the window had to be left open I could hear road noise all day and more importantly all night. Was even woken up early in the morning by the back up sounds of a garbage truck. I made the mistake of not double checking if the motel had A/C, as 99.99 % of every hotel / motel I have ever stayed in, A/C is always available. This is a penny wise and pound foolish move, as the southern Ontario summers are extremely hot and humid. This motel will definitely suck in the summer time. To give some credit to the establishment, a fan was made available in the room, although it is NOT a replacement for A/C.

Holes were cut into the walls (exterior and interior) and a vent grill was placed over to hole to try to improve circulation. Again, this is not a substitute to provide A/C.

And, this brings up the next issue, is there any heat in the winter time? I assume a space heater will be provided?

Wifi was weak and kept cutting out. Could not even stream music on the phone, which uses very little bandwith and works with the slowest internet. Had to use my own wireless data from my cellular phone.

No towel rack to hang towels. (Definitely an overlooked detail when they renovated).

******MOST IMPORTANT criticism ****
I had a two night stay and after the first night, there was no room service provided. Garbage was not picked up and built up over 2 days. Sheets were not changed. Fresh towels were not provided*****

For almost $100/night I expect a certain level of room service to be provided. This is completely UNACCEPTABLE. If I wanted to provide my own room service, then I would rent from an AirBnb where the lower price justifies a lower level of service.

Last night I said at The Rex Motel. Apon arrival the lady (maybe the owner) who worked the counter was very nice and really help me out to get a room even thought though they were fully booked. We get to the room, start to relax and unwind talk a bit (not yelling). I am a very polite, respectful medical cannibus user who carries a prescription card. 10mins later the lady actually opened our unlocked door, barged in and started to yell and insult us. With out giving me a chance to speak she began to carry on, YELLING; I don't want you doing that S$&@ in here, I will kick you out, I don't want your kind of people in here...etc. We were mortified. It was very disgusting, how she stood by our window and listened to our conversation from the outside. She had no right. She wouldn't even let me explain my illness or how I'm respectful and was not planning to smoke in the room or near the motel. She spoiled a great night for us. Her actions left us very uncomfortable, to the point where we didn't not want to stay there and relax after a 3 hour travel. We only slept there an left first thing in the morning. We left with no messes, I even made my bed and took out our trash when we about to check out. Even after all of that she still gave us an ear full when we checked out. Turns out, I did not use my medication that night, we were quite, did not smoke in the room and left it pretty clean. To sum it up, there was no reason for her to carry on the way she did and wreck someone's night. I will never go back. I also advise you not to go either.

My airline stopped service on my original days of travel which resulted in me having to cancel my trip. Orbitz called Rex motel requesting a full refund. Amelia the owner refused to refund my money even though the cancellation was beyond my control was done way in advance. We cancelled 3 months in advance. I have never had a hotel refuse refund with proper notice and a legitimate reason.I am totally shocked that this owner is so desperate for money that they would take advantage of future customers. Because of the way we were treated , we will make sure to spread the word about Rex motel!

We had read the reviews and decided to book at this hotel. When we arrived the room was definitely now what we expected. The bed was so low to the ground I don't know how we could have gotten up the next morning. We spoke with the manager and they showed us another room. Not much better but at least the bed was higher. We were exhausted and didn't want to drive all over to find another place.

We soon realized we should have driven on. There was no deadbolt on the door and the lock was totally insufficient. There was no air conditioning so you had to leave your unsecured window open. Everything was old and run down. I have stayed at older establishments before and there is a difference between vintage and run down. This is run down.

The neighborhood did not appear all that secure and we could not wait to get out of there the next morning. The breakfast consisted of a roll and there was nothing about this hotel that I could recommend (and I'm not a fussy traveler). I have no idea how this hotel has the positive reviews it does I kept thinking that I had to be at the wrong hotel but the address and the name confirmed that was not the case.

The previous reviews were correct about the staff being friendly, almost overly friendly. The room was also relatively clean, for the vintage of this motel. However, I can't believe that all of the previous reviewers failed to notice some of the following. There was not any thermostat to control the room temperature in this room. There was some heat coming out of two centrally located registers, but my wife wanted it warmer, so she slept with her clothes on. A large window faced a well lit parking lot, and the curtains had to be held closed using extra pillows, which was set up that way when we entered the room. The curtains were unlined, so the room could not be made dark. My wife needs total darkness to fall asleep. The bathroom was very small, with a wall mounted sink, toilet, and 32" square corner shower, all very close together. The only place to set anything down in the bathroom was on top of the toilet tank. The adjacent rooms were not occupied, but we could easily hear other guests. In the morning the water running through the pipes was very loud, and you can hear every car or truck that travels down McLeod Road. Don't expect to walk to do sightseeing, since most destinations are at least a mile away. We checked in late, and all we asked was where we might park for free near the falls or casino area, but the information I was given did not turn out to be that useful in locating free parking, so we ended up paying for parking. The next day I found several free parking places on my own. We usually do bidding to name our own price for hotels, and we are accustomed to paying less than we paid at this motel for very nice 3 star hotels, so for us this was not a good value, being more like a 1 star hotel. We definitely will not be returning.

This place is somewhat over-rated on Trip Advisor currently. The Rex is a fairly stereotypical-looking motel with a dozen or so separate rooms in a semi-circle. The rooms are clean and have pleasant decor, but there is almost no storage space which might be problematic if you are staying longer than a day or two. The owner is nice and will talk to you about Niagara, but there may not be anyone at the desk when you start or end your day. While this is a perfectly decent one star motel, there are a lot of almost as cheap two or three star hotels in Niagara that offer a lot more amenities and are closer to the action. Conversely, if you want something quaint or charming, you need to look at one of the bed and breakfasts, because this very much is not quaint or charming -- it is a stereotypical motel, albeit with decorated rooms. Solid budget choice, but dont be misled by Trip Advisor calling it the number one rated place to stay in Niagara -- it is very much your average motel - cleaner, with a nicer owner, but not in any way exceptional.

I have to say the owners of this motel are extremely nice people. When you arrive they make you feel like your at a home away from home. After our arrival a plate of
homemade pastries was brought to our room, they were delicious. Even my picky son loved them. The room itself was small but we were told that prior to our booking the reservation. We figured we were only going to be there for three days so it would be fine. The area of the hotel is close to the attractions. The two cons were the flies that kept entering our room and then
ack of hreakfast. They were large flies and I must have killed at least seven to ten during our stay. My one big grip was the breakfast or lack there of one. It states on the website that breakfast is included and shows a basket full of different pastries. The first morni g we were there breakfast didn.t arrive so I went to the office to inquire and was told breakfast wasnt included. I was told the pastries that were delivered every afternoon at around 4 oclock was intended for breakfast the next morning. I didnt quite get that concept because as soon as the pastries arrived at that time we ate them or the flies would have. Other than that the owners we endearing, the price was right, and the place is very clean even with the flies. I wouldnt return to niagara falls again as once is enough but if i did i would give the rex another shot.

There are two full size beds in one of the room and the next room has one full size bed. These are located in the same corner suite. It was a very good choice for us.

How far of a walk is it to the falls and casino?
Answer from Tinysmom
Middletown, Delaware172 contributions31 helpful votes
It is over 3 km so not really walking distance. Especially since you will do a lot of walking around the falls area. We drove in and found some parking lots that the owner had directed us to. There is a main parking lot that is $10 a day but the owner directed us to one that was $5 on ellen ave but the rate sometimes goes up later in the day. That lot is small to so it can fill up fast so if your going to the full day that is probably the best option unless you want to pay more to the $10 lot. I believe the $10 lot has a shuttle to the falls. We did also find a free one that's near the dufferin Islands on burning springs hill rd but its a long walk ( appx 1.8km) to the falls there.
