Rang to confirm motorhome friendly and were met by ‘crackers’ who guided us into a parking spot. Thereafter Blair (owner) and staff were very accommodating and provided a very tasty meal. Far superior to the Sheffield Pub down the road. Highly recommend

A group of 8 of us had dinner at the Springfield hotel to celebrate a birthday.
This is a long drive out of Christchurch, but worth the effort – particularly on a lovely late summer evening with such lovely scenery.
This hotel, in the small village of Springfield, excels in providing top quality food, prepared and presented to an excellent high standard.
The hostess (owner?) was very welcoming and service from her staff was very good.
I had a terrific salad containing original ingredients and my wife enjoyed a top quality ribeye steak.
All others in our group appeared very happy with their choices.

We rode our bikes down from where we were staying on our last night on the South Island and it was such a great finish. As vegetarians, we don't hold high hopes for pub meals generally - we prepare for pasta, pizza or salad but here, we were greeted by the awesome Michelle and the wonderful Shelley, along with a creative stuffed peppers meal with rice, corn tortillas, black beans and sour cream. Delicious! We played a game of pool, had great chats with the two Shells and felt like we were home. Thanks Springfield Hotel for adding to our amazing time away.

Had a great evening meal and chatted with the very friendly and helpful owner.
Large menu with good choices. Best Fish and chips in a while. Pool table was free. Very enjoyable evening. Would recommend.

I've been a regular if only occasional visitor to this hotel/pub/restaurant for nearly 30 year. I knew that the place had changed owner since my last visit but what a change! It used to have friendly welcoming owners and staff. The food was excellent if a little over sized. The residents always welcoming.
After a long journey my companions and I decided to have Friday dinner at the hotel. Well the reception we received by the female owner who was tending the bar was less than friendly, her attention to us, the only people at the bar was less than positive, if in fact not hostile. Basically every question was met with either a negative direct response or a grudging look, accompanied by body language which said "your wasting my time"!
After being told the kitchen closed at 8pm we were left feeling a little shell shocked.
Having worked in hospitality and customer service all my life I am amazed this place has customers, given the owners attitude and approach. Might not have been 'perfect' before but is sadly not a pleasant experience.

Having called at this establishment just under two years ago and had a amazingly awful experience, I thought while passing again I would give it the benefit of my hard earned money. What can be said really, very dingy, very basic, no longer appears to have a "dining room", although its visible through the doorway at the side of the bar. Looks like a storage space of excess furniture.
The menu, now just a board on the wall and a white board, took me about 3 minutes to scan, even less to evaluate. So if I fancy something it basically must come out of the deep fat fryer, or maybe be a pizza. Very limited so if you are healthy eater or veggie or vegan, just buy a bag of peanuts, if they happen to have them.
The place is still owned or managed by the same couple as my last drop-in. My encounter last time was with the landlady, I was received and served by her again. No smile, no greeting, which even the most casual encounters with a kiwi is standard approach. But then again she is an Aussie and that's obvious from her accent. I was served eventually with what I wanted. I asked four times for the same thing, I clearly must speak a different language to that this lady speaks, while I do have an accent its not difficult to understand me and I wherever in the world I visit I always speak slower and clearer. Maybe if she had been a little more responsive to the fact she did not catch or understand me, then getting my drink might have been quicker.
From the conversation I overheard with her and the locals, the place is clearly on the market, I wonder why?
The locals remain extremely friendly and helpful, pity the landlady hasn't picked up some tips from them.
The place was clean but drab and outdated even for the village that this is situated in, other establishments are brighter, friendlier and more inviting, but don't do the range of alcoholic beverages, allegedly on sale here.
Maybe when I next pass by, the place might have been sold, well I hope so anyway.
Visit with caution.

We stayed in an ensuite hotel room located inside the main building. The good: the owners were very nice, the location is convenient, and the breakfast we ordered was surprisingly good. What we didn't expect from the official pictures was the truck-stop-combined-with-B&B feel. The room decoration reflected this split personality--on the one hand, there were little bottles of shampoo and decoratively-folded towels, and on the other hand the choice of colors was odd and there was a small hole punched in the wall with wires poking out from it. And it was a little bit awkward walking up to the bar with a suitcase to ask for a room key.
Keep in mind that there is no elevator and the parking lot is unpaved. Be sure to get gas, because stations are scarce in both directions.

This is a local pub and makes no excuse for that! You should not go there expecting leather settees and gas log fires!! It is a practical pub for locals and passers by. I am told it is very very busy in the ski season so if you want to make sure of good and somewhere to sit you might want to talk to the landlady & landlord.
Where this establishment scores highly is he friendliness of the owners. I am surprised to read another comment of not being friendly because this was not our experience - far from it! The conversations were interesting and helpful indeed- as was the talk with the locals at the bar!! The food was of god quality, I had rib eye steak for $24 and it was a good tasty piece of meat and well cooked. My wife had fish and chips and they too were tasty and well cooked.
Do not be put off by first impressions as you enter - this is a no frills local! Persevere and you will find very good food at very reasonable prices served by very friendly hosts!

The landlady was very friendly as were the locals in and outside the bar. Our room was en suite , nice large room so was the bathroom. Over looking a field with a miniature horse grazing in straw taller than him. The menu was basic, huge portions and freshly cooked. Sadly they did not do breakfast, there are 2 other outlets that do within walking distance. The rooms are only single glazed so you do hear the trucks at night.

Although we did not stay the night in the pub we did go there for a meal. The people were friendly. I ordered the warmed seafood salad with spice seafood sauce. I got half a shredded lettuce with a few bits of cucumber, a tomato, a very small piece of salmon that was out of the water too long and in the fridge not long enough along with some sauteed frozen Marinara mix that can be purchased at any supermarket. I am yet to taste the spicy. I think the pigs will enjoy my $28.00 meal. My partner ordered the mixed grill which promised a 100 Porterhouse Steak. Although I know 100 grams is small, I think they should have just said it was a schnitzel to begin with then that would have been cleared up from the start. It came with cold bacon, a few deep fried onion rings, chips and two over cooked eggs. Not a mushroom or tomato in sight. I have lived in pubs and eaten at pubs many times and had the odd bad experience but nothing as bad as last night's meal at the Springfield Hotel.
The decor was dated but added to the character but I really don't think there is any excuse for dust and dirty glasses on the table. Sorry guys. We won't be back. Guess we will look for our local eating place elsewhere.

"Room 2 is good size, but look out for the hole in the window frame. There is a lamp on the bedside unit with no bulb . The remote had no batteries in it, the T.V is having on the wall, did not look safe daren't put it on, just in case...shower gel and shampoo bottles needed refilling."Read full review
