Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The studio we stayed in was huge and had everything we needed for a 1 night stay. It was a good location for access to Arthur's Pass. The room was a little dated but the bathroom was great! It had Aircon, a TV and a fully functioning kitchen. The owner was very friendly!

I stayed here for a night on my way through the Canterbury region. The hostel is clean, tidy and cozy with very good facilities. Friendly staff and convenient location make it ideal if you're on your way to Arthur's Pass or around the area.

Great location for access to Arthur's Pass. Greeted on arrival with an excellent Japanese meal, Very friendly and accommodating hosts. Shared bathroom but not at all a problem - may have become a little crowded with a full hostel. Lovely period accommodation to give an enjoyable stay.

this place has a good price, great rooms and amenities, rents mats & guide books (and all you need for climbing) and on top of everything has good and friendly service. Couldn't recommend more. There's not much in the town other than a service station and a pub so make sure you stock on supplies before heading there.

I had a great stay at Smylies with my son on a sneaky Springfield ski trip. We stayed in motel unit 1, which was comfy, clean and well kitted out. The ski gear that we hired was in good condition and appropriately sized. Colin and family were helpful with picking the best ski field for the weather conditions. Good value, comfy and good service.

We were looking forward to our 2 nights at Smylies enticed by the wonderful food pictured on the website and looking forward to a nice Japanese meal after a long 3 hour drive in the rain. The website said “will welcome you with genuine hospitality, fully made beds and meal options you only dream about when staying in 5 star hotels We offer room-service meals, or try our dining room. Japanese/NZ-style dinner $20-$25. Breakfast $10-$18.” We arrived just before 7pm on a Sunday night. Unfortunately when we arrived we were told you had to book meals the day before and to try the local pub or the other pub down the road. We walked to the local pub to find it closed and the other pub down the road (11kms) was also closed so ended up doing a 60km round trip to the nearest open restaurant in Oxford. When we got back we found there had been a slight mix up in the bookings as we thought we had booked a twin not a double. We were handed some sheets and told the double bed easily splits into two singles. To be honest by then we were so exhausted we didn’t have the energy to figure out how you did that. The accomodation is very basic but we thought a nice meal would compensate for that but unfortunately we are still dreaming of eating that as we checked out a day early. We were offered a partial refund of 40% for the day we didn’t stay and some chocolate by Keiko which was very kind however it didn’t really compensate for the bad experience. I think the website needs to be a bit more realistic about how you have to book dinner in advance and also the standard of accommodation which is rather basic and dated. I am sure the food would have been fantastic so we will just have to keep dreaming of that. Date Wed 05/09/2018 Nights Adultsl welcome you with genuine hospitality, fully made beds and meal options you only dream about when staying in 5 star hotels.

How to get to Smylies: from
