Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I stayed here one night passing the location is great free parking very close to the center. The rooms are spacious and accessible directly from the car park. Furniture a little old clean enough with a little extra maintenance would be top

Our one bedroom unit was spacious and clean. We chose not to sleep in the double bedroom because it was so hot in there and the air con was situated in the main room where 2 single bedrooms were. There was a good sized table in the main room also and a spacious bathroom with good water pressure.

The negatives were, no curtain or blind in the window to the back of the unit and a frosted glass door also at the back of the unit causing a security light to shine right into our unit throughout the night which was very annoying. It was unbearably hot during the night, unfortunately we chose not to turn the air con on because of the very loud noise it was making. It obviously needs servicing. The swimming pool looked as if it needed a good clean out and the sliding door separating the bedroom and bathroom is stuck. There is no restaurant although it is still advertised on the website. If anyone is requiring breakfast on a Sunday or any other food in Wairoa, it is advised to make your own provisions because there are no cafes open.

Units are large and fairly well equipped (full kitchen) but need some updating and checking - only one chair, for example, and bed light didn't work. Continental breakfast delivered to the room somewhat hit and miss.
Although on the river bank there is no view of the river, but a positive is the restaurant and bar on site. However the bar had only 2 half-full bottles of white wine available - this in Hawkes Bay!? Friendly and helpful staff doing their best.

We had stayed at this motel on previous occasions but the present owners have no idea how to maintain and operate a motel. The reception area is so disorganised it gives a preview of the the rest of the establishment. Our room was absolutely filthy with substantial stains on the carpet, mould on window sills, stains on the sheets and dirt around the entrance door. We had to ask for crockery as there was not enough for the four of us and what was there is totally mismatched. Although the units are old and dated I don't mind that if it is just clean. This was not. The cleaners even wore gumboots when they were servicing the units. Yuck! We had booked for three nights and at $180 per night for the two bedroom unit it was not cheap! After just one night we booked out and asked for a refund. The request for a refund did not faze Anne (who by the way was very nice) and she readily agreed. Obviously requests for refunds are common. Getting the refund however was another experience. Emails and phone calls had no effect and it was only on the return to Wairoa for a family function some six weeks later that we managed to secure our refund. This motel is not one for any decent person to stay at and should be avoided at all costs. Expensive and filthy!

$138! Smoke alarm ripped out of the ceiling, plasters on the ceiling covering up holes, dead cockroach on the carpet, broken toilet, screeching noise whenever you turned the water on, smeary fingermarks on the TV, shower seratone boards broken around the base. Ashtray full of cigarette butts at the room entrance, Just yuck. Needs some serious repair work before it is rentable and I believe no smoke alarm in the unit is actually illegal.

Whoever told these ppl they could run a motel shouldve kept quiet, the wife is rude and obnoxious, moaned when I rang through all because she had to stop what she was doing to answer the phone, your customer service skills are less than those of a monkey. The rooms, amenities, decor and styles are old, dirty, grotty, smells of cigarette and highly overpriced.

Stay away from this place.

In August of 2019 I made a booking for a one bedroom unit for the 15th of January 20 for two people with in mind that there may be 4 of us.

Prior to leaving Christchurch I sent an email confirming 3 people and maybe a 4th but will confirm prior to arriving. On the 14th of January I received an email saying that due to me booking a executive studio unit I could not have 4 people stay, I then replied saying I had booked a one bedroom in the mind that there may be 4 and asked that someone contact me urgently via phone. No one called me back so I called left a message but still no one called, I called again and spoke to the chef who checked the booking and confirmed it was a one bedroom unit I told him there was no other accommodation available in Wairoa he took my number and said he would call me back however I still didn't receive a call.

I sent an email cancelling the booking as I had no options available. We are attending a kawemate for a family member. I am applaud and disgusted at the way I have been treated. I am writing this review in the hope that this does not happen to anyone else.

D Waiariki of Christchurch.

I booked a room directly with the Vista Motel Wairoa using their own website (not via a booking.com site). I received a confirmation email advising that our room had been secured. We arrived at the motel only to be told that there were no rooms available and they were full. I showed the receptionist the confirmation email I received.

The receptionist looked through their emails and found our booking request and confirmation in their emails but no one actually physically secured a room for us. When I asked what they were going to do to fix the problem she rang one other motel with no luck. Outside of the two phones she made that was the extent for their efforts to remedy the problem. Their service was abysmal and absolutely useless. We had driven 6 hours on the basis that we had a place to stay, only to be told “sorry we’ve got no rooms for you”. On top of that, the efforts to fix up their stuff up was hopeless.

Fortunately two friends were also staying in the same motel and offered to put my wife and I up for the night on their single bed/couches in the lounge/kitchen area of their motel room. The only other option was to sleep in our car or drive 6 hours back home. Thanks for nothing Vista. Because of your slack business practices we had a less than comfortable and ideal stay in Wairoa. I can say with absolute certainty we won’t be back and I will not be encouraging friends or family to book or stay with you.

Sharpen your act up or your business will fail and fold.

We should have left the moment when we discovered the toilet door was off the hinges, light bulbs were missing, and the tap wouldn’t turn off. Things got worse.
The place was filthy, stained linens with holes, undusted bedsides, and the pots and pans were blackened and unusable. The smoke alarm was deliberately disabled, so I considered it unsafe. There are too many things to say, but please do not waste your time and money on this establishment for the benefit of your health!

We recently stayed at the Vista and were SO disappointed with the state of the rooms . Chewing gum on the bedside table (yes , you read correctly - yuck !) , cigarette butts littering the back deck to our room , clumps of hair on the floor , shaving cuttings left on the bathroom sink & a general dirty appearance to the rooms .
I approached the owners regarding a partial refund (which I believed was very reasonable given the condition of the room) and was told we would be given one , however , almost two weeks on we are yet to receive this .
I have phoned the Vista SIX times in the last two weeks to follow the refund up , and I’m told every time that the money will be put into my account this evening to which it never is . I am SO disappointed & frustrated with the situation . Would definitely NOT recommend staying here .
