Detailed Reviews
We rented Downhill Beachhouse for 5 days. During the week, we explored local sights and enjoyed the beautiful beach. The living room was perfect for a family gathering. We previously rented here and had a fantastic experience. The house is superb for gatherings, well-equipped for catering, and the owners are warm and helpful. We highly recommend Downhill Beachhouse for its breathtaking setting and memorable experiences.

“Making Memories” for life with the whole family in this wonderful place. Just back from a fantastic weekend at Downhill Beach House. The Hosts were quick to return emails leading up to the trip giving me all the information I needed and McCall met us on arrival for a tour of the house and answered any questions. We arrived on the Friday evening and cars did not move again to Sunday afternoon- everything we needed was on hand. The House is perfect for large family gatherings, with kids (we had 11) in the large attic bedrooms leaving 5 other bedrooms for the grown ups, all en-suite and very comfortable. The house was warm and homely with a newly refurbished kitchen, 2 large ovens, 6 ring hob, 3 fridges plus a fridge freezer and a family size dish washer - perfect when your cooking dinner for 21 hungry people. The location WOW - coming from Northern Ireland we sometimes take the beautiful scenery for granted, but it was lovely to slow down and enjoy what was literally on our doorstop - beautiful. Thank you McCall for all your help, Our Family had a fantastic weekend and we would definitely recommend for anyone else wanting to make memories for a lifetime💕

One word.....FANTASTIC!
22 people (11 adults,11 children) and it suited us to a tea! Got a friendly welcome from the owner who gave us a rundown of any essential info we needed.
The beach (which is gorgeous) was right on our doorstep although there is great space at the front garden to relax and hang out.
We had great weather which was a bonus!
Thank you McCall for a wonderful weekend Our family, especially my dad the birthday boy, had a really enjoyable time. Would highly recommend!

Stayed 3 nights with my wife in May. It was a great location, especially friendly to day trips all over the north coast. Private rooms were nice, showers and common areas kept quite clean. William (the host) was friendly and helpful.
Downhill is very quiet and not "next to" anything but the beach and right at the bottom of the cliff below Mussenden Temple. The beach was amazingly empty and perfect for walks. Nearby Castlerock and another village on the A2 provide a couple of grocery shops. (Nearest places to eat are in Coleraine or Limavady) If you have a car, the Bishops Road (100 yards from the hostel) is great fun.

I stayed at this hostel about 2 years ago in one of the dorm rooms for a very cheap £8 a night. The stay itself was fine, the rooms and the (communal) bathrooms were clean, but I think I was too old (30+) to be doing the dorm/backpacker thing. There were 6 or 8 bunk beds to a dorm room and I really felt my age being amongst a bunch of 18 year olds. This isn't the fault of the hostel, but mine. They also had private ensuite rooms which I should have booked on hindsight.
The couple that run the hotel are very friendly and helpful and the hostel has a large communal kitchen for cooking your own meals.
The location itself is stunning, right on Downhill beach itself. Be aware, if you're planning to cook for yourself, that the nearest shops are in the town of Castlerock, about 2 miles away. So get your groceries before arriving, esp. if you don't have a car. Bus and train timetables are crucial if you want to see more of the coast by public transport.

A large group of us booked the whole Beach House for a weekend in August. A moments walk from the beautiful Downhill beach it was just perfect for the 17 kids (from teenage to baby) and their 16 parents. The kitchen is very well equipped and the dining and living rooms perfect for the cooking and eating in such numbers. We managed to get a room per family and the family with the baby were able to stay just apart of the noisy rest of us. We were delighted with the house and the location and for the owners accommodating our strange requests - like can be hire a bouncy castle or two and put it on the lawn for the weekend, and would you mind if we had a pizza making van arrive on Saturday night (Papa J's Magherafelt). It was a lovely great value reunion weekend and the kids had a ball.

Response from DownhillBeachhouse, Owner at Downhill Beachhouse
Responded 19 Feb 2016
We loved how you planed your weekend with all the families at the Beachhouse. It is tricky to go on holiday when you have a young family but you all are determined to spend time together as families which is wonderful! The kids seemed to really enjoy the house and the bouncy castles you rented for the garden and of course the beach! So glad you had such fun and thank you for booking to return next year! -William and McCall

I stayed here for one night in July with my wife and two young children and we loved it. We booked a family room with its own ensuite with shower etc which was great for privacy.
The staff were extremely helpful and it was unlike any place we've stayed before, we will definitely be back. The location was a dream setting and the rooms were spotless and beautifully presented.
Thank you william, McCall and the rest of you :)

Downhill Hostel is a beautiful restored Victorian beach home. It's comfortable, clean, safe, and spacious, and its hosts are very accommodating and welcoming. I was traveling with very few plans and info on how to get around. They told me everything I needed to know to really experience the Causeway Coast, including what was great to see and how to get to it. There is a bus stop right by the hostel, so getting to castles, Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede, plus the amazing Bishop's Gate and gardens (within walking distance from the hostel) are all easy to get to. Don't forget to walk the stunning beach in front of the hostel. It's a real treat. Also, it's easy to get food to bring to the hostel in nearby Castlerock. You will want to cook in the beautiful kitchen, where I saw traveling groups get their gourmet on. Consider making this hostel a great retreat for yourself like I did.

Our favourite stay throughout our travels - beautiful old house with lovely rooms (recommend the double on the top floor), and stunning views over the beach. Great, well stocked kitchen, and great staff. Good selection of books, board games, records, and a lovely open fire! We will be back.

Hi there, I'm sorry, no we don't allow pets.
Is there a TV in the room. Hoping there is we got a 2 year old who won't be quiet without his TV lol
Hi there, no there is not TV reception in Downhill, but there is reasonably fast WiFi so if you have a laptop you should be able to get his favourite programmes.
Yes, Crusoes coffee shop in Castlerock village is just 2-3 minutes drive away and serves breakfast.
Triciamorgan31@hotmail.co.uk asked a question Jul 2015
United Kingdom13 contributions18 helpful votesIs there a ground floor bedroom with ensuite for a disabled person?
Yes, there is a ground floor bedroom with an en-suite wetroom. It has two sets of full sized bunks, for accessibility purposes it is sold as a private twin room using only the lower 2 single beds. The ground floor of the house is all level access and there is a lowered area of countertop in the kitchen for any wheel chair users who wish to use the kitchen facilities. To book this room it is probably easiest to email or phone us so we make sure you get the correct room rather than being assigned one by an automatic allocator.
