As a non surfing, solo traveler, this was not the place for me. I've stayed at budget fales around Samoa and know what to expect, but feel that Vaiula Beach Fales fell short of this. Not much of a welcome, the compound needs some improvements, and the dirt road (1km from main road) is pretty rugged - some taxi drivers will charge an extra fee to take you down this part of the road. The breakfast was ok, but dinner was not - inedible in my opinion. On the positive side, the beach is stunning and the surfers love this place.

This amazing place was full of fun and great people! My family and I stayed for 9 nights all in one beach fale. We loved the location and the people who ran the place were so friendly and kind. Dinner and breakfast were good but just a reminder there is no lunch in the fare. But there is an cool little beach bar that Nugg runs who does surfing and snorkelling tours and can do lunch for you such as Pizza and Burgers which are really good! Snorkeling is not the best on the beach as the water is no quite clear enough but lovely and warm to float and swim around in. The place has lots of bushes and trees everywhere and there is an incredible cave with a pool at the end that you can go through with the owner's son for 20 Tala for two people. We all recommend staying at these beach fales if you are definitely on a cheap budget!

These were the first fale we stayed at while in Samoa. They're located right next to the sea (obviously) with a small beach (okay for swimming, but it's only there if it's low tide - there's waves so snorkeling is not possible/there's better spots to see something) and it's a really nice view you wake up to. The local style dinner was always delicious while breakfast was very simple but still good. I would've loved some Marmelade with my Toast. We especially liked the bar on site, were we spend our evenings with a few beers and the cute kittens running around. Showers/toilets are campsite style and not all have toilet paper.

The Vailua Beach Fale are right on the beach with uninterrupted views of the ocean, but they are basic but if you are wanting a local experience then this is it. The staff are all very friendly and Dave helped us hire a van so we could drive and explore the island. The food was great, dinners had something different each night. The breakfast were o.k ( we went for surf trip so it was good enough for us). The amenities need updating, and no hot water. We were given own toilet paper as the local's take it. so might want to take spare toilet paper with you. If you don't have a car then the nearest shop is about 35-40 min walk, there is no ATM near here so take plenty of cash. There was a local bank to exchange currency but only open Mon,Wed,Fri. There however Nuggs bar next store so you have get beers, smoothies, pizzas and burgers. Over all great experience friendly people and beautiful location

Stayed at Vaiula Beach Fale for 7 nights in an ocean front fale whilst on a surf trip with mates. The property is beautiful, original, untouched Samoa. The local family headed up by Chief Dave are lovely people and were always friendly. Dave sorted us out with a rental car for the week at a good price through his contacts and had many a chat to share local tips for the island. The fales on the beach couldn't get any closer to the water. If the weather is good you sleep with just the mozzie nets down around the bedding and wake up to the postcard like view of the ocean and palm trees. If the weather was bad, drop the side sheets and you stay dry and listen to the weather roll in around you. Accommodation is basic but met expectations. You get a matteress, pillow, sheets and mozzie net in a fale but I was never cold or uncomfortable given the climate and Vaiula is a Samoa experience after all, not some generic hotel chain experience. I loved it. The surf side of the trip. We were looked after by Nugg - surf guide, boat captain, barman & chef. Nugg runs a boat that fit in 8 blokes and their boards and ferried us to the outter reef and across to the island easily. The heavy wooden boat was perfect for pushing through the small swells and made for a smooth ride. The surf waves were great and when they were not on Nugg dropped us to the Island for some exploring and snorkling. Back on land Nugg runs the bar right on the beach with plenty of cold local beers and makes some great burgers, pizzas and one hell of a tuna melt. Give it a try if you find yourself in Nugg's bar some day.

We stayed here a night . It is very rustic and basic and certainly off the beaten track! Not much welcome or info given but we muddled through. It was nice that they catered for us by serving fish for dinner. Family run and we met Dave the next day, great for a chat. The fales are right on the water. Clean sheets foam mattress. Bathroom area could do with some improvements as in the toilets and sink area are really basic but we did find the other rock shower that was much better. Unfortunately the bar is not always open so we missed that but a nice guest bought us a beer at the shop. If you like to get away from it all with the bare minimum this will suit you fine! About $35 pp for dinner bed breakfast. You need a car most likely too.

We were booked for 6 nights but only stayed for 3. We had booked 3 months in advance but they were surprised to see us and nothing was ready. Our first night was in a beachfront fale and our 3 sons in another fale nearby, then we came back from a trip to the island and surf break to find we had been moved to another fale because the roof leaked when it rained. The mattresses were thin and uncomfortable and the pillows smelled a bit mouldy, At $70 tala (NZD$40) each per night (our 10 year old was charged full price when she was normally half price) it was expensive for what we got. The first night we had a lovely umu meal as there was a big Samoan family reunion there. After that the food wasn't great with boiled eggs and crackers for breakfast (so our 2 kids that don't like eggs just had dry crackers). The staff seemed a bit grumpy. However, Nugg was awesome taking us out to the island snorkeling and to two surf breaks and making two delicious pizzas when we got back. He was a wealth of local information which was much appreciated.

Beach fales - no walls, just a mattress on a floor with a roof and mozzie nets. And literally two steps from the water. So beautiful. Meals are always more than you can finish, with authentic Pacific food. Nugg's bar nearby is a great find - delicious pizza and great burgers with some of the best fries and banana chips I have ever had. He was also endlessly helpful with a variety of things including a boat trip to a nearby island for a glorious morning with three billion hermit crabs. Fitting our luggage and our family of four into one fale was a challenge - our bags were dotted around the edge but not unmanageable. Dogs were occasionally noisy at night but overall, waking up to see the south Pacific lapping at your door was just blissful. Challenge was the lack of card access for payment - Samoa outside Apia works on cash and don't expect that you can easily access cash! One unreliable ATM at a shop. Once again, Nugg offered a variety of solutions as well as great insights into the Samoan culture.

This is a fantastic place to get away from it all! Second time here and chance to experience more of the charming "Samoan Way". Typical family style Samoan fales = expect to be sleeping on mattress on wooden floor. (Kiwis: think DOC camping, with toilets, showers and additionally homestyle food cooked by the family members who own the property....all situated on a stunning peaceful lagoon edge...at 32-34 degrees year round!!) The owners, Maitai Dave Petersen, his beautiful wife Anita and their gorgeous children made our trip so delightful with a great food (Dave went out of his way to prepare a huge fish we had caught in the traditional way with fresh coconut cream. AMAZING!) The highlight was an evening of dancing, both "MTV style" (Paris G you should be recruiting here!!) and traditional Samoan style. Jean and her crew, soooo talented. The generosity of this family is truly humbling; as were the open hearted invitations we received from locals to attend their Easter church services. Other highlights included Sunny's guided cave visit and hiring his SUP's for paddling the lagoon. The hard core surfers were gone at day break, way across the lagoon to hit the waves with Nugg. Beer at sundown in Nugs bar and seeing the Milky Way to the max as we retired to are fales...AWESOME..

Uncomfortable mattresses, leaking fale roofs, uneven fale floor boards do not make for comfortable sleeping. Grounds are not well maintained and got the feeling the owners/workers seem a little bit lazy. Rubbish was scattered everywhere and the overflowing rubbish bag in the tree next to our fale wasn't emptied for over 3 days. Never enough toilet paper in the bathrooms and also the solo roll seemed to be taken away at night? Not sure why. No hand soap was provided which was uncomfortable. At 70 tala per person per night, Vaiula is overpriced and unreasonable. The food is average at best. Beach is average and not clear water for snorkling. Will not be staying again.
