Our hotel is located beachfront on the Caribbean with a wonderful white sand beach on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen, just a few steps away from the 5th Avenue. We count 195 oversized and comfortable resort style hotel rooms providing vacation accommodations and hotel lodging. Combining Mexican and Caribbean designs that bring to mind the warmth of an old, but beautiful, Mayan village.

Mahekal Beach Resort is celebrated by guests for its prime beachfront location, which allows easy access to both the serenity of the sea and the lively local culture. The resort's ambiance blends local charm with an energetic nightlife, including live music and beach parties that, while popular, may be disruptive for some. Multiple pools and dining options enhance the experience, although in-room amenities sometimes fall short. While service is generally lauded for its friendliness, opinions on room quality and value for money vary, with some guests pointing out maintenance issues and questioning the cost of their stay.

Superior EVERYTHING!
That’s what has kept us coming back for 11 years. The staff feels like family. The grounds are kept immaculate which is impressive because there are trees and plants everywhere. The food is delicious. If anything is off, the staff makes it right immediately. The beach is wonderful and kept 99% seaweed free (which is amazing considering how prolific the seaweed is on other beaches).
Already planning our next visit!

Wow, this place was beyond what we ever hoped for! You could tell every ounce of the property was thought out and details curated for a specific vibe. There are no bad rooms but we were very happy with our palapa bungalow, amazing view of the beach and right next to the restaurant where we could lay in our hammocks on the porch and listen to live music.

The beach itself was the best beach we saw over the 6 days we were there, very clean and though it’s not private they keep a close eye on the chairs and keep it very quiet and mellow.

We did the half inclusive which was awesome- breakfast and dinners included (excellent food) giving us time to explore and do excursions during the day (amazing location too- 5 min walk from the Main Street). Highly recommend a scooter adventure in Cozumel!

I can’t say enough about the staff here. We made great friends over the course of the week. Our waiter Wilbert and his team at Olas even surprised us with an super thoughtful treat on our last night. We looked forward to our conversations each day with Alan, the pool concierge and the “beach boys”(Manolo and team).

Can’t say enough good about this place. Exceeded our expectations and can’t wait to share it with our family and friends. We will be back!

My husband and I had an amazing relaxing vacation at Mahekal Beach Resort! We were supposed to attend a wedding but due to COVID it was cancelled. The resort opened on October 1st after being closed for six months and our vacation was almost delayed due to hurricane Delta. We had a short flight into Cancun from Houston, little did we know that we would be whisked away to paradise! We stayed in an Ocean Room, it is literally right on the ocean, private dip pool, hammocks, and room service all at your fingertips. We would highly recommend the set 4 course menu offered at Fuego, each night the menu changes and you have the option of an appetizer or salad, soup, main dish and dessert. The resort is in walking distance to 5th avenue, where you have an array of shopping, cafes and eateries. Special shout out to Carlos in guest services for making our stay so amazing! Carlos went the extra mile, he made sure that everything during our stay was top notch and even gave us his cell phone number so that we could easily contact him while at the resort. My husband and I have never had this level of personalized customer service as we did during our stay. Book your next vacation with Mahekal, you won’t be disappointed!!!

My fiancé and I had the most amazing week-long stay at Mahekal Beach Resort! We have never had such amazing all-around service.

Resort restaurant (Fuego) staff:
We had the pleasure of meeting the staff members Ignacio, Manuel, Enrique, Sergio, Victor and Bianey during our many delicious meals here. All were so helpful in helping us with food selections. All were so happy to help us learn Spanish as well (especially Enrique). Special shout out to Manuel for making our proposal dinner extra special and romantic!!

Fuego food: just amazing! Every single meal was an adventure. The set menu dinner every night (4 courses) was phenomenal! Too delicious!! The chef is amazing! We never wanted to eat anywhere else because everything was so amazing.

Housekeeping staff: I can tell the staff here pay so much attention to all the little details, which took the service here to the next level. Every time we left (even if it was only a brief period) the housekeeping staff would come and transform our room into a beautiful, clean, pristine place again. They really pay attention to our living habits and adapt the way they organize and clean to how we like things in our room. We have never had such great housekeeping service!

Concierge: huge shout out to Rosa, who went above and beyond to provide the most epic proposal dinner experience! She coordinated the entire event, which included an intimate sunset dinner on the beach and professional photography. She also had fantastic recommendations throughout our week-long stay on things to do and events at the resort. We loved her!

Front desk and security: so helpful from the beginning to end. The security guard was super vigilant in ensuring our safety!

Location: great! In the middle of Cancun and tulum. Very convenient to get to pretty much anywhere you want. We loved that the resort was integrated with both the Playa del Carmen beach and downtown, which enabled us to experience all aspects of all Playa del Carmen has to offer. A lot of other resorts are isolated entities.

Just returned from 3 nights at Makehal and was pleasantly surprised by the experience since we’d never heard of it before and their rates are far less than other beachfront resorts with spacious and well appointed rooms. The staff is super friendly, almost too eager especially at the restaurants, constantly asking if you need anything and if you’re enjoying your experience.

The setting is really stunning with a pristine albeit public beach which got crowded at times. The grounds are well cared for and it’s hard to believe that the hustle and bustle of 5th avenue is just a few blocks away.

Food and service at Los Fuegos was A++ Everything we ordered was spectacular and worth the $. Don’t bother going out to eat outside the hotel unless you want to party and loud music. Room service was quick and efficient also.

We had a house right on the beach and the guards made us feel safe and protected our privacy at all times.

Purely aesthetically, they would benefit from some fresh towels at the pool and drinks service especially since they are right next to the restaurants.

They charged me for cappuccino at breakfast and did not explain prior to that that only the coffee at the buffet was free of charge. I know it rained that afternoon/evening but anyways the room was very humid, no net protection on window for mosquitos . I had a feeling the room was quite dirty and outdated. Lightning is terrible. The "hotel beach" is way too crowded with all the public visitors. Breakfast is below average. Etc, etc... Definitely WAY overpriced!!

Perfect place to rest and relax for my daughter after her medical exams! Room #1 is literally right on the water and feels very private. The staff at Fuego restaurant was unbelievable- they remembered my daughter's food allergies, exactly what i liked to order for breakfast down to the last detail that i needed a clean spoon to make my 2nd cup of matcha! They made homemade gluten free muffins each morning for my daughter and even offered to make her gluten free pizza and pancakes. Every request is viewed as a pleasure to accommodate by the staff. They remembered our names, our room and preferences. I cannot wait to return with my family!

First I’ll start with a positive comment that Mahekal is a visually stunning property, feeling very tropical and fresh. From there our experience was all down hill. I’d like to rename the hotel the “No, Won’t & Can’t” help or do anything for you. They have so many specifications and rules that make using any of its advertised benefits impossible.
My Dad came to visit me in Playa and I selected this location because it was central, ocean front, higher end and seemingly more comfortable- I regret this decision. The trip started out on such a sour note when they checked him into a smelly dirty room, then took over an hour and half to reassign his room, making him wait outside in the heat with nothing to do but wait. This was absurd because the property was at a low capacity because of COVID. I was shocked and angered that they gave no room upgrade or nothing complimentary to accommodate for the inconvenience. When I asked them to provide an all inclusive accommodation, or something, they said they’ll look into it.. never happened.
In addition everything was such a money grab. Thy gave him a wrist band and told him it’s a $100 USD if he looses it. They gave him a physical key on a long thick lanyard (looked like a motel key) and told him that would also be 100 USD if he lost it. My ability to come on property to visit my Dad was incredibly limited even if we purchased a day pass. We ended up going to a different beach club because their day pass was so limited and wouldn’t allow me to use to the pool or visit his room. The hilariously sad part was when my Dad checked out he saw that they charged him for every soda or water he consumed during what was supposed to be an included breakfast or lunch. The only thing they did really well was charge you additions and say “no, can’t or won’t”. There are a ton of beautiful welcoming and accommodating hotels in Playa, this is not one of them.

the good:

location
great location right at the beach on playa del carmen, just a few blocks walk to 5th avenue for tons of restaurants, shopping, bars and entertainment.
food
really enjoyed the food here. amazing breakfast, lunch served either directly to you at the beach or at Fuego, nearly beachfront. Great service from Manolo! thanks a lot for taking such good care of us.
dinner was really great, and a big thank you to the lovely hostess Vianney who always greeted us with a warm smile and friendly chat. Thank you, Vianney.

the bad:

we booked a treehouse for 3 people via Tui and specified 2 queen beds, but upon our arrival we were told nothing available so we got sen to a room with a single king bed the first night. the next morning we spoke to reception and requested to get changed to a smaller room closer to the beach with 2 queen beds. they agreed but charged us an upgrade fee, even though our original booked room was costing same or more. so we will try to sort it out with Tui. The room ended up being okay, but their was a big problem just outside the room, the pelicans pooped all over the place. the groundskeepers cleaned it daily, but it was really everywhere on the palm trees by our room, on the balcony... it stunk like rotten fish. do not take room number 50. room 48 much better on other side!

mosquitos
there were plenty. use repellent, even when sleeping sometimes

We took our fifth trip to Mahekal beach resort in Playa del Carmen this last November. I struggle every time to leave a review truly worthy of this place. It is impossible to write a short paragraph about how fabulous it is. But as much as I feel at home, as much as I constantly crave it, as much as I am thoroughly in love with the place Mahekal - it’s winding paths through a tropical jungle punctuated by thatched-roofed huts, pristine swimming pools and eateries stuffed with Mexican and Mayan cuisine, I am mesmerized and in love with the people at Mahekal. They are indeed our second family. Rogelio (thanks for ALL the special treatment!), Manuel, Manolo, Mariano, Jared, Angel and Jonathon (thanks for climbing the tree to get Jordan a coconut!!) are our unparalleled friends and expert servers. Martha and Rubi, our sisters at the spa, lovely women and I’m proud to say, our friends. They make us feel so pampered, and more importantly, so loved each time we enter Revive. Caesar, the ice cream maestro! What a sweet sweet man and his dear friend, Veronica, who runs the exquisite shop filled with local art, both of which are next to the artisan hut where the local artist paints a sign for our door each time we visit! From Rosa, the friendly and helpful concierge to Tito, the first welcoming person we see when we arrive, from the gentle-souled pool man, who with a genuine smile, hands us our towels every day, to Jose Luis and Gilberto and Fabrizzio who speedily bring us an unending supply of cocktails and guacamole with chips, coconut water and grilled vegetable tacos as we luxuriate by the pool or on the beach all day. Thank you to our spa sister Martha’s husband, Mahekal’s head chef, who created a special dessert for Jordan and I after our final treatment and to the dozens of groundskeepers and house cleaners who meet us every time with a smile and an Ola! We miss you and can not wait to return this November to celebrate with you Jordan’s 30th birthday!!! We’ll be packing our suitcases in 8 short months where we will once again travel to the absolute best resort on Riviera Maya, Mahekal Beach Resort! We. Can’t. Wait.

Yes. You pay an upfront “tax”. The most annoying thing is every time you eat or drink they give you a bill. The bill is zero, if you don’t have a payable item , but there’s options in the bill to add a tip It puts you in an uncomfortable position. Also there’s a mini bar in the room. If you use anything you pay , which is crazy as you could go to the bar and restock yourself. One more thing, for some strange reason they give two coffee pods a day, but one is decaf so a limited choice I complained and they did change that and give two normal pods. I also asked for a kettle to make tea and I would take milk to the room from the bar. It’s all a little petty I hope that answers your questions. Steve
