The Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula is often commended for its exemplary service, with staff lauded for their attentiveness and professionalism. Its location earns appreciation for being close to the ferry and airport. While the hotel buzzes with vivacious parties and activities, some guests feel the atmosphere can become too loud and monotonous. Despite clean and spacious rooms with ocean views, issues like overbooking and outdated decor are noted. Although the hotel's cleanliness is widely praised, many guests don't find it a good value, citing additional costs and noise disturbances.

We had a great time at the RIU Palace Peninsula. Like other Riu Palace locations the rooms are clean, food is good, the overall experience was what we expected.
We arrived very early, before 12:00 noon, and we able to "check-In" and reserve a room and get the wrist band that allows you access to the resort (food, drink, pool and beach). You can't get into a room at that time but you have access to complementary changing rooms and check your bags until your room is ready (normally after 3:00pm). We had a quick lunch, changed into swimwear and were sitting by the pool by 12:30pm.

The Resort has many pools and two main beach areas, one is a long strip the runs along the side which has a unique layout. The beach is on top of some low cliffs and rocks (a little odd at first but the strip is 20-30 feet wide before you get to the water which is several steps down to more beach area with a swimming area. The second beach area is on the other side of the peninsula and a more traditional waterfront beach with palm trees, chairs and more kid friendly swim area. There is a pier that separates the second RIU resort Caribi which you also get access to when staying at the Palace. That resort is newly renovated and has a much nicer modern feel but smaller layout and has the Riu Party location which was fun to visit. The Palace does have better food and top shelf liquor which you don't get at the Riu Caribe resort.

The Palace is a little "Dated" and has an older feel inside with lots of Purple colors ( it could use an update but certainly acceptable. The shows were great and something to do see every day. Service was top fantastic and location was great. The room on the 11th floor was full ocean view and great layout. All the rooms face the water and the hotel is 16 floors with the first 3-4 floors looking out to the pool area and trees, so not really ocean view. The higher up the better the view and there is also a VIP adults only section that a bunch or building not part of the main resort ( some do not have water view and are only a few floors).

Resort is 30 mins or so from the airport and does have a bus stop in walking distance if you want to explore the strip or go into the city for $1 per person per trip.

We have stayed at many Riu Palace Locations and this one like the others lived up to the price you pay to be in a "better" resort.

Traveled as a couple in February 2023 for a winter getaway. Price was exceptional.
Pros: Great staff and service; great food; nice room, clean.
Cons: Smoking still allowed; minor issue with photography service.
We appreciated the service of Celes, the bartender, who we met on our first night and we saw again later in our trip. Very helpful, very down-to-earth. My wife speaks Spanish and I understand some, so we had very nice conversations. I also want to mention Alfonso at Krystal’s. Most entertaining waiter we had. Made our dining so much fun. All the staff were great.
We were in a Villa Junior Suite with a sea view. The villas are in the VIP adult-only section. They are three story buildings. We booked through a travel agent. Requested a high floor and ended up on the third floor in the 2100 building (2124). This building is closest to the main resort. There are three villas that face the sea and two behind (Villa Junior Suite) with no sea view. The center of the three sea-facing villas is the Villa Suites, so larger rooms than the two other buildings. The nice thing about the villas is they have their own pool, which is a long pool and is well suited to lap swimming, though you’d have to do it in the morning before people start hanging out. Towels in the Villas are provided and do not require you to have a “towel card” (like the main building rooms); however, they do give you two cards if the Villa towels run out. We notice they do refill them sporadically throughout the day, so grab them when you can. You will have to go down early if to put your towel down if you want a poolside chair or particular daybed (there are several in the villas near the pool). There are no elevators so if you are on the third floor, be prepared if you have mobility issues.
Villa rooms also have a dedicated restaurant, the Kulinarium, which I would say is the most elegant restaurant there. It is an “elevated” dining experience. Very nice indeed.
The villa rooms are identical to the tower suites. Ours was nice, no issues. We were happy with it. I've seen complaints about the beds but we thought they were fine, not like a "board" like some have said. We had cleaning come every other day—we didn’t need it every day. We did have one service glitch with a fridge refill: they never came. We had one earlier in the week, no problem. Second time we called for water and nobody came. We thought maybe because we had the No Service sign out; however, we took it down later and they still didn’t come. We called a second time and nothing. So we grabbed some water from the Sports Bar before we checked out. Last day so not a biggie.
Villa rooms are nice because the beach bar is right there plus you are right up from the part of the beach that is not rocky. Again, with chairs you may want to get towels out there. We usually headed down in the afternoon and found suitable chairs. On two occasions nothing was available, so we just went over to the rockier side and found chairs there, no problem. Beach there is narrower and there are stairs down to the beach (like 4). That beach is right in front of the main pool area. There is a rock formation that separates the two beaches. It’s the photo op location!
There is drink service at the pools and at the beach. Since the villas are in a small area, they come around constantly. Beach was pretty good too.
Our biggest gripe is the smoking. It’s sporadic but you can run into smoking groups and it’s annoying. I was on the beach for hours with a group of chain smokers behind me. I just dealt with it. We had some pop up in the villas on our last couple days, smoking by the pool. Cancun seems windy all the time so that helps! It’s not enough to keep us from going back.
The main tower is for families, but we did not see a lot of kids there. They have a day care and activities. There is an actual Mayan ruin on the property so don’t miss it!
Food: Restaurants were all very good. And if you’re not happy, there’s always a buffet available. Breakfast buffet is fantastic. Lunch is also very good and they change up the items. We did not use the dinner buffet. There is also a grill by the main pool area if you want burgers, dogs, fries, etc.
Entertainment/Activities: Most daytime activities take place in the main pool area. There are three pools in that area. We did the water aerobics every day and the activities team is just great. So much energy. There is also a beachfront RiuFit area where they do yoga, stretching, etc. Evening entertainment varies. We were not there for the Beach Party. We saw a mariachi band (fantastic), a Michael Jackson impersonator/show and a Rock Show, which was put on by the entertainment team. The entertainment team also has things going on in the evening in the main lobby. Sometimes free photo opportunities, casino tables, etc.
Security: You’ve probably seen the photos, but don’t be alarmed when you see groups of municipal police or the Marina police. The Marina police are the ones dressed like soldiers with rifles, helmets, etc. Same if you go to Isla Mujeres. They are lining the dock when you embark/board. Can’t blame them for wanting to keep such a big tourist area safe. And it sends a message for anyone looking for trouble.
Tipping: As our travel agent said, it is all-inclusive and doesn’t require tips, but she takes about $500 for tips, miscellaneous when she visits so we took about the same. Some people think they get better service if they tip. I don’t think that’s always true. We know how important tips are to the workers. We tipped pretty much everybody. Less for the buffet dining, more for dinners. For tipping, think of the airport transfers, bellhops, maid, fridge stocker, bartenders, and waiters. We appreciated the bellhop when we arrived because he explained the hotel areas for us and even oriented us to the room. Also, when we arrived at the airport for departure, the airport porter not only took our bags in, but also did the check-in kiosk for us by scanning our passports and attaching our tags. I thought that was nice.
Vendors: They are roaming the beach but not very intrusive. Trinkets, excursions, alot of massage vendors.
As a Palace-level Riu, you can go to the other hotels for drinks and breakfast/lunch. Since Caribe is right next door, we did go over there to check it out. It was lunch and their buffet looked nice. They have a small bar outside (closer to the Peninsula) that also makes individual pizzas, so we wanted to try that. One thing I’ll say is Riu is not the place for pizza! We had some at the hotel and it’s okay. They do have a large outdoor grill near the main pools. Beach there is also less rocky.
One caution on the photo contractor at Peninsula: If you have them take photos, make SURE you are clear on what photos you want, etc. We had some beautiful photos with the Catrina but during the selection process, some of the framing was cropped out when printed and we think he chose a couple wrong pictures. My wife felt he was rushing through it. We later noticed the framing was partially cut-off in the printed picture. It originally said “Cancun 2023” with a border and that’s why we selected it. In the printed picture only the “202” of 2023 was visible and none of the border. We went back to see if he could re-print it with the partial numbers on it. He refused. Said “That is why I ask you when you choose”, but he did not make it clear it would print with part of the numbers. To us, the correct response is “Yes, let me fix that and reprint the picture for you.” The framing did not appear on the electronic copies of the photos either. That was probably our biggest glitch during our stay and not directly on the hotel by any means, but they are doing the photo work for the hotel, so ½ star zonk for that. Hope this helps future travelers. We really enjoyed are time there, especially for the cost.

This time the Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun has left me speechless. Since we arrived they have treated us very kindly at reception, solving our wait for a room. The location of the Hotel is the best, close to the center of Cancun and with a direct route to both Costa Mujeres and Playa del Carmen, places that I recommend to spend the day at any other Riu being able to use all its facilities. The Hotel services are excellent, the cleaning of the room and replenishment of the minibar are a 10, so much so that they got us an extra bed for our 10-year-old son without requesting it. For Mrs. Doricela, the person in charge... my respects.
The hotel food is very good and very varied, there are also some typical restaurants outside the usual dining room. For the little ones there are accessible meals everywhere. Don't worry about having a sea view, since you can see the water from any room. For the beach, I recommend walking just a few more meters to get to the Riu Caribe which is next door (they always offer something to drink on the beach). I also recommend visiting Shopping La Isla just 15 km away, going by bus without any problem for $12 MX, since the UBER costs $140 and the taxis cost $400, what a difference. Very close to the hotel, they have a supermarket, pharmacy and exchange office. Excellent vacations !!!!

I am a celiac and before going I had read a review that was the worst hotel for a celiac, but the truth was, the attention was great from the arrival. A few days earlier I had sent a kind of information leaflet with my illness and when they arrived they had it printed. When talking to the chefs of the place, all very concerned and with the kind willingness to make me food in clean and secluded places, even one day I prepared a gluten-free sandwich to go hiking and eat outside. Special mention to the chefs Javier, and all those who served me so well (I don’t remember the name right now, but they were in charge of the kitchen at different times), whenever I looked for them, they were willing to prepare food, even sometimes I left it ordered overnight. There was a day that during the night I had a problem with ordering the room, as in the application said that there were gluten-free options, however they were not free of cross contamination, the next day they approached me and told me that they had discussed the problem and that they had talked about it the kitchen area, therefore I felt very comfortable and listened. I was very worried about how I would feel about being on vacation here, as other times on other Trips, I can not enjoy this very thing.
But it was spectacular! I was able to enjoy the whole hotel feeling good and not worrying about the food. The hotel itself is fantastic, the beach is great, there are plenty of things to do, the wifi works everywhere and the staff is very friendly. I totally recommend the experience at the hotel RIU palace peninsula.

First visit for us with a party of 18 adults and kids. We all had a fantastic time!. The resort was beautiful, very clean, grounds were immaculate, the staff were super friendly and amazing, the beach was beautiful (a little small) but you can also use the other Riu's beach if needed, soft white sand and the water was beautiful, clean and no seaweed was visible.

Rooms were a little outdated but we didn't care since we spent very little time in our rooms except to sleep. Our A/C was fine but some in the party did have issues with their A/C's not cooling. I believe that is the par in Mexico when it comes to A/C's at resorts. We stayed on the 6th floor and did not have any issues with noise from the pool area. Only three elevators in the hotel, so wait time was long.

We tried almost all the a-la carte restaurants, as well as the buffet and the food was better than most resorts in Mexico. The drinks and cocktails were okay, though 99% of the times, the beers were not cold enough. Sports bar served American food 24 hrs a day and was small and noisy.

Pool area was kept immaculately clean by the hard work staff, we loved playing the beach volleyball, used the canoe's and sail boats, and the daily pool exercises were fun. There were plenty of pool chairs available and there was no need to run out in the morning to reserve them.

We attended the "Pink" and "White" parties at the Riu next-door and that was really fun. The daily shows were okay including the Michael Jackson show. Pre/Post daily shows, they have some local Latin live music in the same area, loved the change up in tunes there!

Didn't use the resort spa, but we got beach massages for half the price (10 mins walk to the pier where the boats for Isla Mujeres leave from, can negotiate a discounted rate).

The resort is about 20 mins from the airport, across the road are several restaurants and the main Cancun shopping mall is a bus or taxi ride away.

We have always loved staying at various Riu resorts around Mexico and we certainly enjoyed this one too and would not hesitate to come back.

Fantastic experience at this hotel. Me and my partner, (now fiancée, we got engaged on this trip!!) had the best two weeks.

The views from the rooms are fantastic, as shown in the photos! The drinks in the fridge are replenished each day and housekeeping staff work really hard and have such high standards. The only slight downfall was there were not many channels on the tv but you don’t come on holiday to watch tv.. it was just something for the background whilst we got ready to go out in the evening.

The staff all around the hotel are so so lovely and cannot do enough to help you! Such polite and helpful staff.

We never had issues getting a sun bed, and there were always plenty of umbrellas available (for people like me who sadly burn easily).
The swim up bar was a firm favourite for us, I wish we were still there with a cocktail in hand! Staff are consistently cleaning the pools. The only slight negative was that the same music is played around the swim up bar on repeat which can get a little tedious, must drive the staff crazy!!

The riu parties are so much fun and you literally just walk next door for them. Just again the music does tend to repeat itself at the events which drives you a bit mad!

The food was fantastic. There are lots of options in the buffet restaurant, and the themed restaurants are
so lovely. We tried three of them, admittedly you have to get there by around 6.30 to be seated but this was already expected. The steak restaurant is lovely but is not air-conned so we could only tolerate going there once.

The only thing we wished this hotel had was a bar with music. If you are a young couple like us, after watching the entertainment show, it would be handy to have a small area where music plays and you can have drinks. We found ourselves bored in the evenings and did often get a taxi to the centre near Coco Bongo. Don’t do this! Get the one dollar bus, we only found out afterwards and spent 30 dollars each way for a 5/10 minute car ride. There is a sports bar but no music plays in there.

Would definitely recommend this hotel but if you want somewhere to have a drink at night time, you may be better off in the Riu Cancun which I believe has a club at the hotel.
Overall we had a wonderful stay on our first visit in Cancun and even better that we got engaged!!

Many thanks to all of the staff- they all deserve every tip they receive!

Do not trust Riu to give you the room or even let you stay at the hotel you booked and paid for months ago.

We were excited to show up for our first all inclusive stay at a Riu hotel. We booked the hotel, airfare, excursions, and coordinated our scuba diving class through Riu to be at the Riu Palace Peninsula. So we were super frustrated when we finally arrived after a long day of travel to hear that they sold our room to someone else and we needed to stay somewhere else. What made it worse is when they said they were sold out but were still checking in other excited families and giving them their wrist bands but we were told we could not stay there. We were told we could not be upgraded or given any other rooms but they would let us go to another one of their hotels down the road.

Turns out the hotel they moved us to had two cartel hits in the past six months so nobody wanted to stay there. The new hotel had heavily armed marines with body armor doing patrols on the beach several times a day.

So our fun trip to Cancun that was supposed to be worry free absolutely sucked thanks to Riu. I will never book them again and warn everyone that it can happen to you- that you could be kicked down the road to a different hotel with no opportunity to research that hotel.

Riu made no attempts to compensate us for their not honoring our prepaid hotel reservation and instead tried to get me to sign a waiver saying I volunteered to go to the other hotel. Again, do not trust Riu.

Stayed here between 1st and 12th July and even encounted a lockdown at the Hotel due to a Hurricane. Everything was managed professionally and signage around the hurricane was clear in the lifts and reception area. Food was really good, always a great choice in the buffet restuarnt, Elvis was one of the waiters who stood out and always gave a warm welcome and looked after us with wine and finding us a table for a party of 6. We did struggle on days trying to get into the Steakhouse, The Mexican and Japanesse resturants, all being told it woudl be over an hour or fully booked, which was a disappointment as we would have liked to try them all whilst on out holiday. We managed to book into the Italian one night and waited 45 minutes to get in. I think a booking system in advance would be a preferred option as the first come first served did not work, we like to eat around 7:00 / 7:30pm but got the impression we were late to diner and could not fit us in... The pools were great, coudl be a bit deeper as I think they were only 4ft deep, but was nice and a choice. Waiter service round the pool was good and the beach was just a few steps away. The Caribe Parties next door we did not visit as these were all for adults and with our 16 year old son, were a bit disappointment he could not attend. The even entertainment was not the best to be honest and we walked out on a few nights as it was not really our cup of tea and 16 year old son didnt enjoy any of the shows. Abba was probably the highlight, but it started to rain and ended up going into the main reception bar to chill out there. The pastries and coffee area was really nice, loved the strawberry tarts and a coffee late afternoon after a day at beach. Would I recommend - Yes, Would I book again - Yes. Loved the Optics in the room and the maids checked on us on a regular basis to check eveything good in the rooms, which we could not fault.

This December trip even though the hotel was full, its organization is pretty good the clean room, enough restaurants , usually there was no line , the themes, you waited only a while, the coffee and cocktail area also well served, it was so full that I in particular was offered upgrade to the kukulcan hotel in particular I did not accept it because this hotel likes its view of garden n and the beach is relaxing. Just the comment is to congratulate the administration that despite the full total was still functioning. Just a small detail not to neglect is the quality of the food that probably because they were overdone if you notice lower quality but in short their gastronomic is so enough that there are options.

Besides being a really nice hotel, the location is perfect because the ferry to Isla Mujares is a short 5 minuet walk away and a fun day trip for 20 dollars round trip. You can also pick up public buses to other important areas like the club areas (coco bongo ect, ) and shopping areas in the city too. The cost is only 1 dollar per person and they run around the clock like 10 minuets apart, super convenient

Short pants ok at buffet, just no bathing suits. A La Carte, business casual suggested by not enforced. Most men wore long pants and collard shirts at A La Carte.
