Detailed Reviews
Stone Island Hotel is a small, family owned gem on the beach on Stone Island. 2 bed/2bath unit I stayed in was spacious & clean, with a small equipped kitchen. Full service restaurant (& bar) on site.

On a perfect beach. Great food. The location is quiet and set in a small village. If you are looking for raucous night life this isn’t the place. If you want exceptionally clean, comfortable rooms overlooking the ocean this is the spot. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy some down time. Can hear the waves as I write this review.

I've been traveling to Mazatlan for almost 10 years now. I own a timeshare in the penthouse of one of Mazatlan's most renown, established, and upscale resorts. Every year, I arrive a few days before my check in date to maximize my actual days on vacation (vs days taken off work). This has made me intimately familiar with the full spectrum of accommodation options that the city has to offer.
Every time I do the "Stone Island Tour" I find myself completely enchanted with the peace and tranquility of Mazatlan's Stone Island and beach. I am never ready to leave when the tours come to an end. As a result, this year I decided (for the few days before my timeshare) I would attempt to stay on Stone Island. This search led to my discovery of the pure gem that is Stone Island Gardens.
For those of you have that been to Stone Island you know that the island has a very rustic feel and charm. I was a little concerned about the quality of the accommodations in such a seemingly rustic location. I could not have been more wrong. The property is gorgeous! In fact the main building was just completed several years ago so the property is relatively new, and it shows. All the units are all very clean and well maintained. There is also a beautiful garden on the property. The location is ideal. Right on the beach. The staff, phenomenal! Welcoming, friendly, and overly hospitable. It felt like staying with family. The entirety of the experience was so overwhelming that I fell in love with this place. So much so that I decided to extend my vacation.
After checking out of my timeshare, I returned to Stone Island Gardens. I wound up staying an additional 2 months. Perhaps the happiest 2 months of my life. The beach, the food, the people, the lifestyle. My time there was nothing short of perfect.
The internet was surprisingly reliable. This was VITAL for me. I require a reliable use of internet to conduct my business and I could not have stayed for the length of time that I did without such a reliable connection. I loved my kitchen and fridge. The beds and sheets were new clean and comfy. A/C worked like a charm. I couldn't have asked for more.
I have been coming to Mazatlan for many years and this was hands down the best experience and value I have ever come across. In fact, I haven't found such value anywhere in any of my travels throughout Mexico. I loved Stone Island Gardens so much that I encouraged friends and family to come visit me during my time there. All in all 5 different friends and family members came. Each and every one of them was very impressed. I was so proud to call Stone Island Gardens my home for the brief time that it was. I can't wait to go back!!!!!!!!!
Lastly, during my time there I became very familiar with stores, restaurants, transportation and ect so please feel free to message me with any questions

BEWARE of this place if you book online. Our sad story is that we booked this place for 7 days at the end of February. We read the Trip Advisor reviews and choose Room 102. Luckily the room was available for the dates we needed. My husband and I paid $534 in full through Visa and Paypal to hold the reservation. We arrived at Stone Island Gardens after 15 hours of travel only to find out when we checked in that the room was “NOT available” as were any other rooms in their ocean view building. The owner said she couldn’t get hold of us because their internet was no good (of course they had my email address), and the person who made the reservations for us had “run away”. She showed us a much inferior room; dark and overlooking a weedy backyard in a rear building. This room she said was $52 night, and she would refund the difference of room rates, $170, in her restaurant (enough to feed a family for a month here). This didn’t sound right, but we were tired and took this room for the night.
We decided to just pay for the one night and change to another hotel with an ocean view down the beach. When we checked out the owner their policy is to never refund anything to anybody and then walked away out of the hotel office and wouldn’t speak to us. (This policy is not posted on their web site).
My husband and I travel often. In the past few years we have been to the East Coast twice, Europe twice, Russia, Hawaii twice, and up and down the West Coast making hotel reservations everywhere. This is our 4th trip to Mexico. We find people to be helpful, friendly, polite and accommodating. We have NEVER had anything like this happen before.

This unique little island is very close to Mazataln Mexico. A 10 minute, $2.00 boat ride away. My sister and I went on an all inclusive trip to Mazatlan, Mexico. A boat ride to Stone Island Gardens was included for sight seeing and lunch. The following year instead of booking an all inclusive we went directly to the island. This is a young family owned business where they treat you like family. The owner picked us up at the airport (very good looking, too young for me) and took us back to the airport for our return. We were there nine days and never wanted to leave. There is a lot to do on the island. Horseback riding, water rentals and four wheel rentals. My sister and I are a little older so we did not participate in many of those activities. As I said, we were treated like family by the owners and their staff. Very reasonable pricing for food and drink and no waiting even though everything is made very fresh. Everything was excellent. We are planning on going again and bringing friends. They have recently added suite type rooms. Two bedrooms, kitchen, etc. Prices are excellent. The evenings on the balcony were beautiful with flowers everywhere. You get a little of the rustic of Mexico and the beautiful serenity of the island right on the ocean. You are 10 minutes away from the more commercialized Mexico if you care to go visit. The boat ride is fun. We prefer to just stay on the island and enjoy the beauty there. You really can't beat this place.

We were lucky enough to see this hotel as we wandered one block off the beach 2 years ago.We stayed with them for 10 weeks last winter. This is a small well run ,clean, family hotel with beautiful old Mexican garden. If you dont want crowds and dont need a swimming pool this is the place to be. The sunsets are fabulous from the balcony.

We enjoyed our stay at Stone Island Gardens very much, Gary and Ana were very friendly and accommodating. A few issues first night( I assume it was because room had not been used for a while), next morning we were moved immediately. Food in Carmelita's was very good and probably the best breakfast on the Island, restaurant closed at 6 so we had two meals at the outdoor restaurant set up next to the main store and enjoyed that too. Was very easy to catch ferry to mainland on water taxi to walk Malecon or to enjoy Historic Centro. We met lots of long term American/Canadian repeat visitor to Island, Three Amigo's campground nearby. Lots of shells and beach wandering right off restaurant. We would return. They can also set up transportation from/to airport.

We stayed here for 5 years. The reason why is that we had given our rent for 5 years in advance to finish off the last apartment here in the building. Yes, it was finished, but what was not included as indicated in the ads for this place and our understanding was: regular internet service or hot water and sometimes even gas for the stove top. Who lives without these things in a "high end" place? We had no choice.
The owners play one against the other --- sort of of a "good cop - bad cop" drama. We have seen them double and triple book the units here over the years we have been here. Many people are only too happy to accommodate these "oversights" except those who have to be sent to the back of the hotel across the road where there is no ocean view and no breeze. And for those longer term visitors, it is unacceptable, but when short term renters are met with the aggression of the owners who say, "Take it or leave it and you're not getting a refund," many just put up with it. Bait and Switch nailed it. We have seen this happen year after year. Some people we know have lost thousands of dollars to these people in advance payments. We were thanked for our investment with an ugly aggressive confrontation about our leaving date this year, a month earlier than our agreement gave us. So far 6 of the regular tenants who have had longer term rentals here have confirmed rentals elsewhere for next season. No one has been untouched by the tactics of these owners.
The staff, is wonderful. We can only hope they survive their employers. Many over the years have not.
We could never in good conscience advise giving these people money in advance. It is our opinion that $1 in their pockets is $2 spent and as a result there is not enough money to pay the bills, but a lot of money to buy new "toys", new clothes, special hair do's, private school fees, etc. It's all about priorities and their clients are not priorities. Once your money is in their hands, it is gone, as many people have found out.
We feel lucky to have escaped the Hotel California and we can only say what we know will be published. Some of the stories are just too wild... You can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave... We feel lucky to have found the passage back to where we were before...
We LOVE Stone Island and have another place and would encourage others to do the same!

This is, by far, the cleanest and most modern place on Stone Island. Great internet, the AC is quiet, the showers actually have pressure beyond that of gravity. Very nice accommodations. Every morning I woke up to a view right out of a Corona commercial. Gary does his best to make sure you have everything you need. There are kitchenettes and even weights for working out if you need them. I will be back.
