Like others before me I found this wonderfull oasis by accident. Local rental agents refused to mention it and I know why. Once you stay here and join the very clubby group for happy hour it's hard to consider any other place. Most of the Club Melville people go on to buy a house or an apartment nearby. Join the group on Monday at Canucks for jazz. The accomodation is upscale, the staff is courteous, the dining area is beautiful.
Pictures to follow.

We spent a week at the Melville Hotel last November and it was our best stay of any place in Mexico. The two-story colonial mansion has been divided into various sized apartments that rent as hotel rooms from efficiency one rooms to lavish 2 bedrooms. We had a one bedroom on the ground floor with a beautiful king bed and new comfy matress and our own kitchen for the price of a hotel room. Our apartment was decorated with original art and handmade furniture. The interior courtyard was a romantic oasis. There is also a huge common room with TV and beautiful art. The architecture is interesting and beautiful but the other great thing is the location. One block from the beach and malecon for great walks. One block the other direction to Plaza Mechado with wonderful sidewalk restaurants and live music every evening. One night there was a play in the square and another a sidewalk fair. I could move there tomorrow. The evenings in that square will stay with me forever.

The "Zona Dorada" of Mazatlan is all well and good with its beaches, shopping, nightlife and what not but it doesn't give much of a feel of actually being in Mexico. For that I recommend staying at the Melville in the historic old town of Mazatlan.

The Melville is a well restored colonial style building with large, clean, comfy rooms, (Ours had a nice kitchenette and balcony as well) a charming courtyard, a hearty breakfast, friendly staff, laid back guests, and a fantastic location for exploring the old town of Mazatlan. If you are looking for a place to have your every whim catered to then this wouldn't be the place for you, but rather if you are looking for a place to call home while in Mazatlan then the Melville is an excellent choice. One idiosyncrasy that we found about the place was that in spite of a never ending parade of taxis taking tourists from the golden zone by the Melville's front door so that they could peek in on the fountain and courtyard, no taxi we took in a week had ever heard of the place. Odd to be sure.

It is two blocks from the Plaza Machado and all its beauty and charm and about an equal distance from the Olas Altas beach. There are unique and interesting restaurants, bars and galleries very close by. A few blocks further away is the cathedral and just beyond that the fun and bustle of the central market.
Looking to get away from it all....jump a 5 peso bus to the Playa Sur embarcadero and catch the 15 peso ferry to Isla de la Piedra(Stone Island). When you arrive, Walk straight up the pier, cross the road, go over the embankment, and you will find a fantastic beach stretching off into the far distance and wonderful beach front palapa restaurants. They all look good. I personally tried El Pili, Letty's, and Victor's and found them all nice with clean bathrooms, cold beer, and great seafood...and they can all set you up with atv or a horse if you wish to explore more of stone island.

All in all I highly recommend the Melville for an easygoing base from which to explore Mazatlan.

bad experiences ever, the room was not clean at all.
Price is not worth it. Bathroom has not clean towels and only cold water, the stove was not working. Only one staff person for the entire hotel. Although it is located in the best part of downtown. That’s the only nice thing about it.

I have mixed feelings about leaving a review for the Melville. Not because we didn't enjoy our stay, we did. I'm more concerned that drawing attention to it might make it harder to book a stay in the future. I found it through Tripadvisor and was curious why it had so few reviews and none really current. I did some research and decided to take a chance. My main goal was to be in el Centro. It couldn't be located better. Two and a half blocks from the Malecon, a block and a half from Plaza Machado, and within walking distance of anything you would want to see in old Mazatlan. What's not to like? I couldn't have been happier with our choice. If you want 5 star, it isn't. If you want very comfortable and roomy, it is. Our suite had a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable living room, and a very large bedroom with bathroom. The only complaints? No hair dryer and the pillows were a bit lumpy for me.
The Melville is perfect for a short stay. I felt like I couldn't take advantage because with the size of the suite and the facilities, it is really the ideal place for a longer term stay. It isn't hard to picture booking three or four weeks here, having a morning coffee around the corner at Allegro Caffe, shopping at the public market for good food to bring back to prepare, and enjoying dinner and a tequila on the patio outside the room. We will return.

Staying at the Melville is a very different experience than staying in the Golden Zone, but overall was a better one, I think. The hotel is only a block from the Machado, arguably one of the best features of Mazatlan, with a ton of great live music and restaurants. Unfortunately, you can also hear the bars and foot traffic in the rooms. The rooms have great art and kitchens (although ours was not fully equipped with utensils, it was rectified), although the bathroom leaves a little something to be desired. The sumptuous impression of the place doesn't extend to all aspects - the beds and couches are a bit hard, there is no longer a breakfast offered. Not things to condemn the experience, but if you are looking to be pampered, the Golden Zone will probably suit you better. The beaches in the Golden Zone are better too, although The Melville is arguably closer to the ferry to Stone Island. But don't count on the nearby Playa Olas Altas downtown for swimming or lounging, it's pretty windy and the waves are pretty intense. Downtown was fun for being near the market, good local inexpensive restaurants, and walking the historic streets without being hassled by storekeepers. We payed $120 for the double suite (the website is out of date).

I really enjoyed the Melville it is located where you want to be if you want to explore centro/olas altas. You can walk to the market, Plaza Machado, and to the Stone Island ferry. Plenty of restaurants, bars and the ocean in walking distance. The hotel itself is unique with the history of the building, great grounds with lush trees and plants. There is a small library and common dining area. They give you 2 actual keys 1 for your room and 1 for the outside gated door , there is also an intercom for each room to buzz you in. It seemed like everyone else staying there was there for months at a time , settled in with sofa covers and water dispensers in their rooms. The rooms themselves are more like small apartments full kitchen , full size refridgerator,2 sofas comfortable. Nice bathroom , the bed was comfortable, our tv didn't work correctly it was missing 1 coax cable no big problem I just like some background noise sometimes. I thought the doors were great with the chain and pin mechanism to lock them. You can tell by the construction in the room that it was converted into separate apts. The wifi worked great the staff left you alone but were available if you had any questions. I have read on other sites that room 13 was considered to loud from the 2 bars directly across the street and 1 nightclub around the corner, that is true especially on weekends. We are from Chicago so it really didn't bother us slept like a log. I actually set up my recorder on the balcony to record some of the night's goings on. we stayed 2/23/15- 2/28/15.

I tried to contact this hotel twice via their website and once by phone in order to reserve a room for myself and my girlfriend.

I had no response and no answer. Now booked else where, I have been to Mazatlan before and the hotel looks quite good from the outside.. it's a shame the response is a little lacking.

We loved he Melville. We went with 2 teenagers and another couple. The charm of this old hotel and the area of Mazatlan is worth visiting. It is in the heart of Historic Mazatlan and you can walk to great restaurants, coffee houses, margaritas and super good shrimp. The rooms are large, clean and comfy.

We also stayed in another hotel (resort type) and would have prefered staying at the Melville instead (sold out though). We would definitely return to this hotel. Enjoy your stay.
