Located in the middle of the Golden zone, the hotel is very close to the beach. The suite we stayed at had two rooms and more importantly two bathrooms. The kitchenette and living room areas were spacious. Drinking water was provided. The WIFI was acceptable. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
The bathroom fittings and shower area seemed dated. Wasn't a huge fan of the dining table having been set. The kitchenette was missing some essentials like salt, pepper, dish soap, etc

Beach front. Great staff. Roomy two story townhouses. The facility is aging but functional. The grounds are lush and as depicted in the photo. Pool is salt water from ocean as are the rest of the area pools. In suite Kitchens reasonably appointed. As it is a smaller resort, it was uncrowded, and gave us welcome breathing room at the pool side. Restaurant is good and accommodating. They cooked up our fresh caught Marlin 4 different ways and it was excellent. Will return. Thanks Luis, "Chewie" and Winston. The staff made it even more amazing.

El Rancho is a secluded resort on the outskirts of Mazatlan, directly on the ocean (no-bank beach). My wife and I were attracted by the resort's layout that offers maximum privacy. The units (called Villas) are like 2-level townhouses and are connected in groups of 3, each sharing only a part of one wall. Each villa has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a kitchen and a dining and living room. The villas are surrounded by lush green (banana and coconut trees, flowering shrubs, gras in between). There are only 28 villas, but the resort has a well-kept swimming pool, a huge whirlpool, a unique restaurant, and a small store that carries essential items. We were impressed by the friendly, quick responding service. For example, our hot water heater quit one night. We notified the front office at 8:30 PM, and a knowledgeable maintenance person was there 5 minutes later! Efficient maid service came in daily. If you want to be in Mazatlan during the Easter week (semana santa) but avoid the chaos around the hotels between Valentinos and Marina El Cid, go to El Rancho.

We just returned from El Rancho after a five day visit.
The good:
The grounds were beautiful, the pool clean and we were only a few steps from the ocean. We saw dolphins and one whale in the morning. Only a few families and mostly "snow birds" so very quiet and peaceful.
The restauant and bar were OK.
Gustavo the fisherman appeared daily from the beach with the days catch. We ended up buying the best shrimp and red snapper we ever tasted.
The bad:
The villa we were in I would give only one star only for the location and the grounds themselves. Nasty musty smell, the mattresses were I would think as old as the hotel, (won't go into too much detail, but paint your worst picture and start there) bathrooms were bad as well. The staff did do a marvelous job with what they had, no complaints there. The regulars that stay there annually were frustrated and complained the facility never improved or upgraded since they opened. I am not a clean freak by any means but this place tested us big time. Its also the little things. For lounging they had the cheapest plastic chairs you could find at Walmart, some were cracked and you could never get comfortable.
A regular cornered one of the employees trying to sell membership and told him in order to compete with the growing number of new resorts as well as remodels, El Rancho will need a full scale upgrade of their Villas.
We all liked our vacation in spite of the accommadations but would only consider this place again if it is remodeled.

We stayed at the El Rancho Villas Jan '06. There were 6 of us in our group and we stayed in one of the villas. The room had an overwhelming odor that we could hardly stand. The units were resonably clean except around the trash can, toilets and the couch which was especially stinky. While in the hot tub we saw a huge rat run by and a mouse scared the office attendant so bad she ran out from behind her desk. The pool was clean but too cold to swim in. However, the grounds were really very nice, the food was good and cheap but the service was very poor. Drinks were a really good deal at the bar and the bar tender was very nice.
It really amazed me how good the reviews were from other guests. Perhaps they have different standards for hotels. We missed the little shampoos, etc. and since we didn't bring a hair dryer we had to buy one. Lastly, while they provide bottled water the tap water was not safe to drink. After my daughter skinned her knee and came down with a staph infection, I was suspicious of the water.
I think the worst thing about the stay was the stinky room. The villas are cute, roomy and the grounds are very nice but I don't think we will stay there again.

My husband and I just returned from a week in Mazatlan. It was our first trip to Mexico and our overall impression of the area was very positive.
We chose this resort in large part because of the many favorable reviews posted on this website and I feel compelled to add a few "buyer beware" pointers.
The previous post about "bugs" was very accurate. They were tiny, microscopic crawling bugs, but they were everywhere in the kitchen. It really didn't bother me horribly as we had no food in the kitchen and only prepared coffee in the morning. They provide you with a large container of bottled water which I used to wash out the coffee pot and cups beforehand. But if you planned on cooking, you should be aware of this problem. I don't believe they were the result of a lack of cleanliness because the staff did a great job of cleaning every day. But rather, of the rustic nature of these villas. The doors and windows are not completely sealed, and I believe this allowed "nature" to crawl in quite easily.
The villas are very spacious, but are definitely a bit on the aged side. Again, if you're not looking for Ritz-Carlton luxury and really want an authentic Mexican vacation, this won't bother you and it really didn't bother us. Again, the rooms were clean, just in need of an upgrade.
My only major complaint that anyone considering booking here should be aware of was the 12-hour construction going on right on top of the property. The workers fire up the jackhammers at 7:30 every morning and they drone on (along with other assorted machinery) until 7:30 every night. If you are sitting in the pool area, the noise is overwhelming. The ocean area was a little more tolerable.
The property is very quiet and ideal for families with children. Every day is happy hour all day long with 2-for-1 drinks, but the bar closes when the restaurant does at 8:30 at night. The ride to town was very convenient where the nightlife is a bit better.
The cook, Lupita, earned every one of the rave reviews you'll read here. Every single dish we ate was homecooked delicious!!!
In closing, we would choose this resort again, but after the building next door is completed!

Where to begin?? ….. I travel extensively on timeshare exchanges and this was my worst resort stay ever! So bad, that I wanted to cut my vacation short and get the heck out of there! It definitely is not the quality of others within the Interval International system and definitely not what I expected. Basically it is a hostel in a tropical setting on a great stretch of Cerritos Beach with fabulous sunsets. I felt so uncomfortable in my unit that I never even unpacked my suitcases during my one-week stay.
The units are 25+ years old and inside they look it - the counter tops, tile, furniture, lamps and fixtures are all very dated. The units are dark, stuffy and smelly. The remodeling they brag about is basically putting newer appliances in each unit. The modern high-rises surrounding not only block the afternoon sun, they make you wish you were staying in one of them. The resort is small, which is fine, but there is absolutely nothing to do onsite – no activities at all - just the small restaurant and palapa bar, which was usually unattended except for the ever-present timeshare salesman sitting there. Granted I was traveling solo, but I have no problems joining in with others socially.
The only items in the bathroom were a bar of soap, two towels and a bath mat (no washcloths, no toiletries, no hair-drier, nothing). The shower head was rusted and corroded, and the water came out brown for the first minute. There were lots of dead bugs visible in the bathroom light fixtures, the skylights were disgusting and you could see daylight around the vents, A dead spider on the shower floor in the 2nd bathroom stayed there my whole stay – even though the maids “cleaned” every day.
In the kitchen there was a daily parade of ants on the counter (they said they don’t use pesticides inside but would spray outside??). Utensils were rusted (can opener, veg peeler, corkscrew) as was the rack holding the “purified” water jug. Kitchen walls, light switches, exposed oven fan were all very gross and grimy. I had to request a microwave to be put in my unit. Wine glasses/corkscrews must be special at this resort because I was told they couldn’t give me any for my room?? (The timeshare salesman arranged for them to be sent to me.)
When I asked if I could move to an ocean-front room that was unoccupied, I was told by the timeshare salesman it might be arranged if I purchased. I looked at it, and it was no different than my unit other than it was hotter from the afternoon sun – but you could hear the waves. It is hard to avoid the timeshare guys – they are basically hanging around onsite all day – and this is a very small resort so you have nowhere to go to get away from them. I was approached to purchase four straight days in a row – each day a different “deal” – really, have you looked at what you're trying to sell? The beach vendors are allowed on the property so there is the constant parade of interruptions when you are trying to relax. The pool is not chlorinated or heated, had a film floating on the top and is shaded mid-day, so it is way too cold at this time of the year.
One thing that did help get me through …… Winston makes fabulous margaritas at the bar and they are very inexpensive!

A boutique hotel property located among beautiful lush gardens, so private, and opens up to its own beautiful walking beach. The food was the best we had in all of Mazatlan. Little individual villas, so comfortable and beautifully furnished in Mexican decor with Mexican tile. A great place for family reunions, weddings, get together with friends.
We loved this little Mexican Getaway, and it was the best time we had in Mazatlan ever over a span of 25 years!!

Comfort, style, and relaxation. That is what Villas El Rancho provides for us every year. The beach-front villas are beautiful and the staff is always so helpful. Can't wait to go back next year. This is definitely the ONLY place to stay in Mazatlan.
