Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We spent 4 nights at Anakiwa 401, in the Guest House. The accommodation was spacious, clean and equipped with everything we needed. Beautiful landscaped gardens with loads of places to kick back and relax. Tanya was a welcoming and attentive host. We were there in Autumn so the weather was cool but sunny. We made full use of the kayaks - they have a couple of doubles as well as singles, and life jackets provided. Beautiful bays to explore. The Queen Charlotte track starts/finishes on the doorstep. Perfect place to be whether you want to stay in or head outdoors. Will definitely go again, thanks Tanya and Shayne!

We stayed here one night after our Queen Charlotte walk. It was so nice not to have to rush to catch the boat. We booked the self catering apartment, lovely hosts and room. We jumped of the jetty went for a swim. Cycled to the country pub for dinner (borrowed some cycles and helmets from accommodation) which is a must do easy cycle track to it 7km. And walked to see the glowworms at night. Got a shuttle the next morning with Link Bus couldnt recommendation this place more.

Look out uf you want a TWIN booking, First time in 71 years I've experienced an ADDITIONAL FEE soooo high if you use a second bed. Ok for couples. But with two kids, using the bunks (marketed as KING SINGLES), the $165 a night wwould become $265 a night. Good for owners. Not so good for people staying. Hence lower rating. Asked for tea bags as they forgot to provide. They gave as a tiny bottle of milk too. Otherwise a pleasant place. Anakiwa is lovely for a nighf.

Hello Jaiselmeer We were disappointed to receive your review & low rating, especially as you received exactly what you booked through booking.com, an ‘Apartment with 1 large double bed’. If you’d booked direct with us, you’d see this room is also available as a twin room (using the queen bed and one of the king single bunk beds as described) for a one-off additional $50 fee per stay, regardless of whether you stay with us for one night, 4 or seven - the longer you stay, the better value. So although you chose to book only one night and felt it would have been expensive had you paid it, it is actually good value to most guests who stay multiple nights. For us, it helps cover the additional costs of laundering, wear and tear on extra bed linen and time/labour costs to prepare an additional bed. Our family rate (for 2 adults and up to 2 children) in our Bay View Apartment is $210 per night. It isn’t advertised on any booking channels as $265 which you stated in your review - you are incorrect. We apologise the tea bags had not been replenished in time for your arrival but we trust you enjoyed them during your stay, as well as the milk we were happy to provide for you and the complimentary very late check-out of 3.30pm. Perhaps next time you’ll stay longer and enjoy the Bay View Apartment as a twin room setup.

Do yourself a favour and don’t head straight to Picton at the end of the QCT, stay a night in Anakiwa 401, have an ice cream from the Green Caravan, swim in the sea, check out the glow worms in the evening and relax. Shayne & Tanya were great at communicating before we arrived, very welcoming & the accommodation was fantastic, clean, tidy, well equipped kitchen & a deck overlooking the water. Easy to store our bikes & they even popped our bags on the boat for us the next day so we could cycle back to Picton. They mentioned the Link Pathway to us which turned out to be a bonus biking day which was a great trail! Highly recommend, thank you!!

We stayed two nights and it was too short. The hosts (Shayne and Tanya) are super and keep the place immaculate. They loaned us kayaks to go look at stingrays and nesting shags. Swam off the jetty across the road, walked some of the Queen Charlotte Track, admired glow worms and the Milky Way at night. Very comfortable bed with en-suite, and our own sitting room with TV. The shared kitchen made for some pleasant socializing but mostly it was very private. Tanya runs a coffee/ice cream caravan out front in the afternoons and it was brilliant to come back after a hike on the trail to a fresh flat white! We had a good meal at the Queen Charlotte Tavern about 7km up the road and full of character.

After having hiked the whole Queen Charlotte track for 4 days, arriving at the Anakiwa 401 was like dream! What a beautiful guesthouse- cosy, warm, quiet, friendly, nice decor, comfy bed (I was even upgraded to a room with an en-suite bathroom and living room area which was wonderful!) and the friendliest hosts who were so accommodating! By far the best guesthouse I have come across in a loooong time! I highly recommend staying here if you plan a trip to the Marlborough Sounds!

The Anakiwa 401 lodge is by far the best place we stayed in the South Island. Situated in gorgeous surroundings it feels as if you’re tucked away in the sounds. The hosts Tanya and Shane were really friendly and couldn’t be more accommodating, offering free kayaks to use and fresh eggs in the morning. The room was perfect and such good value for money. Do yourself a favour and book it now!

We loved our stay at Anakiwa 401. Anakiwa is the most beautiful and tranquil village in Malborough Sounds, and Anakiwa 401 is perfectly located to enjoy the beautiful location with excellent access to the Queen Charlotte Track. We stayed in a room with a private bathroom, and really enjoyed having our own space whilst still enjoying using the shared kitchen and meeting other guests who were staying at the same time. Relaxing in one of the garden hammocks after a day on the track was certainly a relaxing treat. Highly recommended.

We had 5 nights at Anakiwa 401 during New Year and were very impressed with our Bay Apartment. It was fully equipped and even had our own private BBQ and outdoor furniture. Loved the Hammocks! Our view over the bay was spectacular and although we had free wi-fi with no cell phone coverage inside our unit, we only had to go down to the wharf to have full coverage. The Apartment was fully equipped, only thing missing was a fan for the hot nights and we couldn't leave our doors or windows open as there were insects about! But we wouldn't hesitate to return. Shayne and Tanya have done a creditable job of turning this previous backpackers into quality accommodation. They are very friendly and hard-working hosts. Loved having an ice-cream caravan right at our door!
