Cotton House is as intriguing as it is beautiful. Originally an 18th century sugar plantation hidden away on the private island of Mustique, Lord Glenconner gave it a new lease of life in the early 1970s blending lush tropical beauty with plantation-style elegance and creating an exclusive retreat tailormade for visiting high flyers. Today it is owned by the Mustique Company, who’ve introduced such contemporary ‘must haves’ as a designer spa and infinity-edge pool, the romantic colonial mood remains evident throughout. The resort stands on a picturesque hilltop between the tranquil Caribbean Sea and the windswept Atlantic Ocean. Just 17 charming rooms & suites provide the accommodation dotted throughout the 13 acre grounds and thoughtfully equipped with mini-bars, CD players and private terraces or balconies. Private plunge pools are exciting new additions to eleven of the rooms, whilst a new two-bedroom villa with its own swimming pool and 24 hour butler gives a taste of the island-style living. A perfect hideaway and intimate destination.

In a former sugar plantation, this is a small boutique hotel on a very beautiful and very private island. The place to have relax. With less than 20 rooms and spacious rooms, some with private plunge, privacy is what you are really looking for if coming here. The island is always one of the best of Caribbean

We stayed at the Cotton House for 5 nights in December - lovely boutique hotel with a great feel and a fantastic beach - a great way to experience the "Mustique way of life". In no particular order: friendly and personal service, fantastic beach (with a really good snorkelling spot next to it), relaxed atmosphere, a sense of history, buildings and grounds exuding charm and serenity, lovely room with plunge pool... definitely a great place to relax and chill out. This was our first stay in Mustique and it is as fantastic as they say (or even better!): beautiful island, laid back and friendly atmosphere, lots of space (one can easily have a beach for oneself) etc. A truly magical experience and a fantastic way to escape the pandemic, even for a few days only.

Fun experience from start to finish. We had three nights here, and would have enjoyed a couple more. This is sophisticated Shabby Chic holidaying. Nice beach. Great food and service. Basil's bar also do pretty good food, a little more casual.
Lovely that not too many people can stay on the island, which makes it safe and comfortable. A drive round in a MULE buggy takes about 2 hours.

The legendary Cotton House hotel is all about the location- on one of the prettiest islands in the Caribbean and with a beautiful beach. It’s very old school with wonderful staff, but the rooms, televisions and gyms could use some updating. The villas straddle the fine line between “shabby chic” and just plain shabby, and when the wind blows all the shutters and windows rattle like crazy. We were given a nice upgrade and the service is terrific. Of the two restaurants, the beach cafe serves descent lunch, but the Dinner restaurant is disappointing. No outstanding meals and no specials or variety, at least during our stay.
Gym and spa could use a makeover.
Finally, even though they threw a terrific New YearsEve party, the place could use some livening up, with more live music to put one in the mood, especially during the beach dining.
Overall, a charming place but not up to the standards one expects in this price range, on such an exclusive island.

The hotel itself is pretty standard fare for the level at which it is pitched, and the staff are helpful and professional but perhaps, ahem, on occasion, a little stiff.

Fantastic location and stretch of beach, with some of the best snorkelling in Mustique just off the shoreline.

Do be on your guard at the beach Cafe though. Our party sat down to eat here (after being regular customers for some time) and witnessed birds helping themselves to food from plates destined to go to diners. The wily birds weren't shy, we're talking feet and all in the plate..

OK if the plates were then replaced, but not so. We then watched the staff re-arranging the food on the plate and serving it.

In one example the birds waded into the mayonaisse pecking into the various other condiments, and a member of staff shooed them away, stirred the condiments and served that as well.

As it's bad form to raise an issue on here without bringing it to the establishments attention (how old fashioned), I spoke to one of the staff who had witnessed the event. His response was that we needed water pistols to scare the birds. Hmmm. Not protective nets for the food then!?

We declined to eat there any more after that (drinks only), which is a pity because the location is great.

When you charge a top line rate and are present in a top line resort then expectations are raised. When you then deliver less than average you have a problem.

This hotel does not garner alot of print, and it's quite difficult to get to from the west coast, so we were a bit anxious. The hotel's rep greets you in Barbados and whisks you through customs. After yet another layover and a 45 minute flight you touch down in Mustique. It is a beautiful, lush island. As you deplane, the experience becomes dreamlike. You're greeted by hotel staff who, once again, take care of customs and paperwork. A feeling begins to wrap around you like an embrace. The hotel and grounds are jaw-droppingly beautiful. There is not a lily pad out of place. The staff is telepathic and genuinely warm. The food, although overdone, is good. The feel of the place is laid back, yet every detail has been carefully thought through. You don't think so much as sigh... We are already planning our return.

We booked his hotel beleiving it was a Relais Chateaux hotel and thinking it would be of comparable standard. We were sadly dissapointed. The hotel is advertised as a beach resort, it is not. The beach is just a rocky mess and it is very hard to enter the water. The beach shown on the brochure is actually on the other side of the island. You have to risk cutting your legs climbing across rocks or enter via a wooden platform. It is not even a Relais Chateaux hotel but actually owned by a consortium who own other property on the island.
We were told there was no where else to go on the island but later found out there are actually two other bars and resturants and another hotel on the island which is apparently where the island guess go. Cotton House guests are kept 'on campus' and not encouraged to mix with the island or vise versa. After making our own enquiries we decided to rent a car or mule as it is called. It is worth it but did cost £65 PER DAY PLUS DRIVERS LICENSES! The hotel will drive you around in their bus at no additonal charge but again you are made to feel totally excluded from the island as everyone else is in these mules and Coton Hotel guests are the only ones in a bus. We felt like day trippers peeping through the windows at the sceenery! They will drop you off at a beach and pick you up again at a pre appointed time but it is all just so awkward and not relaxing wondering what time the bus will come!
The Cotton Hotel is devoid of much atmosphere, the bar is soleless with no customers and little life. The so called beach bar is anoyingly full of sand flies which makes it impossile to sit for any period of time without being bitten, very unpleasent. Birds mess everywhere and take food from the tables. Anyone who has been to Southern Europe and experienced the fabulous beach bars there will wonder just what all the hype here is about?
The final dissapointment for us was on a Tuesday evening the hotel has a cocktail party to which we and all the guests of the variouls villas were invited. We thought finally some people to talk to and some life. What happened was that dozens of teenages swarmed the place making it feel like a childrens party with a handfull of acompanying adults who clearly look down on Cotton Hotel guests as second class citizens. We were made to feel very uncomfortable by some EXTREEMLY arogant people. One lady began talking to us and as soon as she heard we were staying at the hotel simply said 'oh' , turned around and walked off! The main resturant was closed because of the cocktail party so we had to eat at the beach bar and get bitten again. Not a good night.
Not the holiday we had expected, overpriced for what you receive. Yes, we did go for the summer special but it is not quite as it seems because by the time they have added on all the extras it equals the full rate anyway so no real deal there.
To end on a positive the managers do try and were clearly aware of the issues there. I feel they too were embarassed by the cocktail party situation as they explained the behaviour of island guests is beyond thier controll. Mustique is a pretty Caribbean island but there are many equally beautiful places to go to in the world with out the arrogant attitude and over inflated prices.

Major dissapointment coming back. Plenty of visits at Mustique and have decided never to stay at this hotel again. The hotel is lovely but the staff cant be bothered and the overpriced food has gone downhill. Staff is lazy and cant really be bothered as this is the only hotel on the island it clearly lacks competition. However there are alternatives as you are much better off spending your $15.000 a week on a villa rental where you will get phenomenal and personal service. The crowded 4 people reception desk will simply not lift a finger to help, the beach club personell was disturbed by having to carry the $250 lunch to the sunbed and if you order anything before noon they will explain to you there are rules as they dont serve food before 12, if ordering in food to the room you will get alot of complaints about heavy trays and you almost feel guilty for having ordered and disturbed the peace. If eating at a 5 star hotel restaurant and ordering a coffee, you wouldnt expect to hear "we are out of capsules"...and even if that was the case a normal reply would be "can we offer you something else like a cup of tea..." but the service stops by being out of capsules. Same goes for ordering ice-cream or anything else they might be out of, if you dont order the specific flavour or itemn they might have in stock you will simply not get any as the DNA of people serving do not have "...can we get you anything else as we are out of vanilla ice cream..." attitude. There are some exceptions at Cottonhouse, some really lovely people that do care about the guests with a great attitude and passion like Michael, the lady serving at the breakfast and dinner, the maids but sadly the majority cant be bothered as there is little choise if you want to stay in a hotel. Climax for me was check out as i got billed for a full stay despite the stay 7 pay for 6 offer and newspapers i never received, when mentioning it i was told "we have guests that are happy to pay for all nights". For $10.000 you can rent a villa with lovely staff, food and service vs $15.000 at Cottonhouse with rude staff, poor food and a lazy service...your choise, i know mine as i will continue to come back to this lovely place for as long as i live.

Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your detailed comments with us concerning your stay. I am very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your return stay and that we did not meet your expectations. I have tried to contact you via Trip Advisor when the review was posted, as after inquiring with the restaurant team and specifically Michael, whom you mention and who is in charge of Food and Beverage, no such issues were reported to him (ice cream, coffee capsules and general restaurant staff attitude). I would be most grateful if you contacted me at gm@cottonhouse.net so that a further investigation can be conducted and a proper apology can be offered. Thank you again and best regards, Eleonore Astier-Petin

THE ISLAND
When you live in one of the most beautiful places in the world you become quite hard to please and reluctant to get on not one but two planes for nine hours. However Mustique is perfection. the island is beautiful. totally unspoilt. Beaches are stunning. Beaches for every need boogie boarding, snorkelling, blah blah ...

THE HOTEL
Elegant and very stylish yet informal and relaxed.. Dress up or down it doesn't matter The service/staff are on a par with Ritz Paris. We stayed for a week and like three other couples that were staying there we did all we could to extend our stay...much to all our disappointment none of us could get flights...I suppose that says it all really..nobody wanted to leave...

In reference to the other reviewer....it's hard to believe that someone else would find the hotels gym facility "pretty basic". Spacious, airconditioned, life fitness equipment etc...I don't know what they need....But perhaps they are the sort of people who'd stay at the Sandy Lane and love it?!

THE FOOD
Breakfast...excellent. My husband is not a breakfast kinda man but he ate breakfast with me everday it that good.
The hotels beach bar is just like it should be. Some of the best Lobster I've ever had.
House wine is very good
We didn't really need evening meals but found the food in the restaraunt to be okay to not so good.. But then other people found it to be fantastic..

THE ROOMS
Very beautiful but watch out for the noisy ones...Sunset is probably the room we'd want if we went back..like our room it had its own pool but it was totally private and a bit further away from air con noise...

OVERALL
It was perfection for us...a relaxed, intimate luxurious hotel on a very beautiful unspoilt and quiet island ..We really can't fault it and will be back.

We recently spent 11 nights at Cotton House and although some it was enjoyable, quite a lot was not.
After reading the rave reviews earlier in the year, we wondered if we had arrived at a different hotel.
Subsequently, we discovered the hotel was no longer being run by the hotel management company prior to the Summer closure season. Instead it was now being run by The Mustique Company which is made up of the owners of houses on Mustique.
This has been tried in the past at Jumby Bay, also a privately owned Island off of Antigua.
I will now put our comments into relevant areas.
ROOM - We stayed in a Duplex Suite which was over 2 floors with 2 bathrooms - sounds great but the bathrooms were the first disappointment, they were very small with a deep bath with shower over which was quite lethal to get in and out off with a narrow step and very little flow of water. Also there was just one hand basin due to the size of the room. Dark and dismal and extremely old plumbing. They were identical both upstairs and downstairs.
The bedroom upstairs and the sitting room (could be used for 2nd bedroom) downstairs were dated and lacking any style. Each floor had French doors on 2 sides which were held in place with badly fitting small bolts with large gaps (Mosquito heaven).
The best part of the suite being our housekeeper Cherry who cleaned and cared for us beautifully. The other being the patio with plunge pool. This became invaluable in the afternoon when you could not escape the sun on the beach, and the loungers were much more comfortable.
BEACH
The beach is quite narrow so there are just one row of loungers and parasols which are quite close together to accommodate the hotel when it is full, as it was when we arrived. This can be a bit of a problem if you want peace and quiet and a family are next to you with children. Access to the sea can be difficult due to the rocks when it is a bit rough. To be fair there is a jetty with a ladder to climb down.
The beach was well run by the staff who prepared the lounger for you and were very attentive regarding drinks etc. The sit up bar adjoining the beach restaurant was also really good.
FOOD.
The biggest criticism of Cotton House has to be the food, both at lunch time and dinner time. We have travelled extensively in the Caribbean and know not to expect London gourmet food but this was truly a disappointment. At lunch time there is a blackboard + a small printed table menu which never changed. The blackboard menu featured 'catch of the day' and pizza which after a few days became very repetitive.
The evening dining room menu never varied for 11 nights, but also featured 'catch of the day' which usually was the same as the lunch time 'catch of the day'.
Apart from the non variety the actual preparation and presentation was well below par and what we have experienced in other hotels in the Caribbean. This was a bit of a shock as they profess their chef is from a Michelin starred London restaurant.
The most bearable part of our restaurant experiences was the attentive 'front of house' manageress Indira who did every thing to make you happy. Also Eric the Sommelier was great on wine and he was always there to talk about our choices.
ACCOUNTS
We asked for a print out of our account after 7 days and what we got made no sense at all. As you pay for everything here it was not possible to see what had been ordered at the beach or at the dinning room at dinner as everything appeared to be put into the wrong place or the wrong category. When we queried this with the office we were informed it was due to the staff putting it in the wrong category on the computer. We asked for this to be rectified and would like a new print out in 24 hours. When we received this it was exactly the same. The General Manager happened to be passing and frustrated we asked him to explain. He said the computer system was operated through Barbados and they were trying to iron out the glitches, so that was that. Maybe this is because the previous hotel management have just left.
There was an overall feeling that the hotel has made financial and staff cut backs but that is just our feelings being well travelled around the globe.
So is Cotton House worth the price tag...we say not now!.

Dear Sir, Madam, I am truly sorry to hear that your last experience with us was not up to your satisfaction and that we did not meet your expectations. We are in the process of renovating all of our rooms and bathrooms and unfortunately could not do all of them during our last closure. As for the food experience, the concept has changed since your last visit and we do offer now some fine dining at our Veranda restaurant together with a lighter fare at our Beach restaurant. Our trial to have the the Beach cafe serving only Caribbean fares did obviously did not satisfy all of our guests, for this I apologize on our Chef and our team behalf. I am relieved though to hear that our personal has managed to care for you in a professional manner. Our computer problems are now solved as well. Please feel free to contact me directly at : gm@cottonhouse.net to discuss your comments should you feel it necessary. Looking forward to hearing from you, Very best wihes for the New Year, Jacques Brouchier General Manager
