Bayaleau Point Cottages are a paradise within the broader paradise of the Caribbean. If you want to get away from it all and have a wonderfully relaxing time - this is the place. Four small, brightly coloured and well equipped cottages, set in a large garden, on a hill overlooking Windward Bay on the north east coast of Carriacou - ahhh, bliss. There's hammocks to swing in, lazy days on the verendah just looking at the amazing colours of the sea, an abundance of wildlife just out your front door (and unfortunately with the mosquito's - in your door - bring good repellent), a small beach only a 2 minute walk away, Dave's rum punch to drink, Rona's great freshly baked bread, the refreshing cold showers (hey - this is how the Caribbean is meant to be - not some 5 star resort crowded with tourists) and some of the greatest beaches we ever seen in the world only a short drive away (and no-one, and we mean, no-one else on them). Don't believe it - go and see for yourself but don't tell too many people. This place is perfect for getting away from it all. We stayed a night in Grand Anise in Grenada before coming out to Carriacou and it doesn't even close.

If you're looking for 4 Star accommodations, Bayaleau Point Cottages maybe isn't for you. But if you're looking for million-stars-at-night accommodations, or sea and sand and simplicity, or a connection to parts of yourself that you may have forgotten, Bayaleau Point is just the thing.

We stayed in the green cottage. The size was perfect for the four of us which included my wife and two sons (ages 9 and 11). Accommodations, overall, were simple which is exactly what we were looking for.

Sleeping: one bed sits above the other in a loft area. There was also room in the loft for the kids' clothes and gear. We maybe didn't need the mosquito nets at night, but used them anyway, with a fan pointed at each bed to cool things down.

Kitchen: Fridge/freezer, two-burner stove top, toaster oven, sink, and just enough dishes to keep them from piling up. Water supply is cistern only, no problems with pressure. And it tasted fine, we drank it every day.

Bathroom: Small all-in-one design where the bathroom itself is also the shower stall. This worked fine. Was tempted to multi-task but resisted the urge.

The porch: Now we're getting to the more important stuff. The backside of the green cabin is a large tiled porch complete with hammock and table/chairs. The green cottage is within 35 yards of the sea but up on the hill, so the view is ridiculous. I did a lot of figuring-out while swinging in that hammock. Some snoozing too (allegedly).

The grounds: The gardens/grounds are well tended by PoPo, a local man who, as an aside, couldn't be any nicer. The cottages are spread out nicely. Close enough for a sense of community, but far enough apart for you to make a pants-free breakfast should you so choose. There's a nice covered deck/gathering area with plenty of tables and chairs that sits right above the shore. Good place for journal writing, or snacking, or rum drinking. Or, in my case, all of the above.

The sea: The grounds form a bowl which leads down to the beach. Recent storms had pulled out much of the sand along shore which they're in the process of re-capturing. No big deal though, that didn't stop us from spending a huge chunk of every day down in the water. The bottom is a mix of sea grass and sand. We had our snorkeling gear with us. Lots of little fish to watch along the grass/sand edges. Some lobster and conch and etc. too. They also have a nifty reef. It's a bit of a haul to swim out there, but easier in the morning before the current/wind picks up. Lots of interesting fish. Closer in, the point and a small jetty keeps conditions easily under control. Also: I saw mention in another review of flotsam/jetsam along shore. We didn't see anything close to the degree described. But if we saw a bottle, we'd pick it up. Unfortunately, I think this is the modern reality of being on the windward side of an island, any island, anywhere. (Hey world: let's ease off those plastic bottles!). But in no way was it at a level where it impeded our enjoyment of this beautiful place. We went out one day on Dave's boat "The Mostly Harmless" with locals Andy and Dane as the crew. Had a fantastic time snorkeling Tobago Cays, swimming with sea turtles, fishing for butterfish, and smiling like champions. Andy, in particular, went out of his way during the boat trip, and after, to make sure our kids (and we) had a great time.

The island: There's not much around Bayaleau Cottages, which is exactly what we were looking for. There's a nice rum shop (bar) down the road a bit, run by the always smiling Maffie and her husband. Past that there's a small shop where the woman bakes excellent bread. Our standard breakfast was sweet bread, juice, and mangoes. Yum. We walked to Petit Carenage beach which is really amazing (and empty). An old shipwreck on the shallow reef adds a sense of adventure to things. Nice snorkeling there too. Tibereau Cemetery (wow) and an old historic well are a short walk the other direction. No signs, no gift shops, no nothing. They're just there. We would take busses around the island (aka mini-vans that are zipping all over the place.) Fun. Hillsborough for groceries (oh, word of advice, sunscreen is hard to come by on Carriacou. Get some in Grenada before you come!) Try the Hard Wood Bar and Snackette for fantastic local food, and then have Joseph take you out to Sandy Island for some really really amazing snorkeling.

But now I'm off track. This is supposed to be a Bayaleau Point Cottages review.

We loved it there.

What we didn't have: windows, hot water, maid service, satellite tv, mints on pillows.
What we didn't need: windows, hot water, maid service, satellite tv, mints on pillows.

Planning to get back there as soon as possible.

Cheers!

john

We ended up here by accident in April, 2006; the place we'd reserved double booked and we were switched to the Bayaleau Point Cottages for the first few days of our stay. Before we arrived, we weren't too happy about that. It took our family of four (boys 6 and 8) three days to get from Colorado to Carriacou and once there, we just wanted to stay put. Also, Bayaleau Point Cottages is on the "far" side of the island away from Hillsborough and the beach sounded marginal.
It ended up being one of the most magical experiences we've ever had in the Caribbean.
This place is not for everybody; in fact, it probably isn't for most people. It's set up so that you feel as if you're living half indoors, half outdoors. We were in the Little Blue Cottage, which from the outside looks like a Caribbean version of the Three Bears' home, complete with gingerbread and porches. Inside is a small room with a double bed downstairs and a loft bed where our kids slept. In one corner is a small stove, fridge and table and shelves for food. You go outside to get to the kitchen sink and bathroom, you eat on the porch steps, you swing in the outdoor hammock. Our cottage was set in a half-wild garden with citrus trees and flowers right outside the door and paths leading to the other cottages and down to the beach. Other than the owners, whose house is away from the cottages, no one else was staying there.
Despite being located on a very poor island and an easy walk from a basic town, the cottages felt totally safe. We never locked the door or windows; I don't think it was possible. I had the following conversation with the owner on the first day.
Me: "Is it safe to leave our things in the cottage when we're away?"
Owner: "Why? Do you have a lot of valuables?"
Me: "Well, just plane tickets and money."
Owner (dismissively): "Oh, you can leave those. That won't be a problem."
My husband and I loved how peaceful the place felt. We enjoyed walks along the almost deserted roads nearby and exploring the town of Windward, where we never saw another tourist. While the beach wasn't gorgeous by Caribbean standards, it was fine for a swim, with clear clean water and the views of the Grenadines in the distance were incredible. Because Carriacou is so small, it doesn't take very long to drive to beautiful beaches nearby.
The only drawbacks I can think of were the heat and mosquitos. There was very little breeze while we were there, which I understand is unusual, but it made it quite hot. When we go back, we'll stay more on top of the mosquitos with coils and repellent, as we did get bitten up.
Finally, here's the experience of my 8-year-old son. Our family tries to visit a Caribbean island every spring. Though we choose islands with relatively few visitors and stay at simple places rather then big resorts, we often end up in hotels with pools and/or air conditioning and/or tvs and/or beach bars where the kids can order ice cream. His favorite place to stay in the Caribbean (and at this point he's probably been to 20 different hotels) is the Bayaleau Point Cottages which has none of those amenities.
It's the only one he talks about and daydreams about on a regular basis. He'd do anything to go back there and every month or two tries to convince us to return. This despite the mosquitos and having to share a hot loft bed with his little brother.
Why? He has a hard time explaining just why he loved it so much but some of his reasons include the frogs in the bathroom and the birds that flew through the open windows into the cottage and pecked at our food until we stored it all in tins or in the fridge. He and his brother could run down to the beach by themselves and play with a litter of puppies or catch hermit crabs. They could look for land crabs along the paths or pick fruit in the garden. They could hang out in the hammock and read a book or play cards on the porch.
As a family, we went kayaking and swimming. We took a day-long snorkelling trip to the Grenadines in the handbuilt boat belonging to the owners, Mostly Harmless. We hired Popo to drive us when we wanted to go somewhere and the kids got to ride in the back of his old pickup.
I can't help but mention one of my pet peeves: the Caribbean vacations marketed to families: enormous cruise ships complete with ice skating rinks, mega resorts where the kids go to day camps and there are 50 different organized activities.... For my boys and, I imagine, for lots of kids, none of that could compare with a couple of weeks on Carriacou at the Bayaleau Point Cottages.
Carriacou is really hard to get to, which is probably what has kept it so special. I don't know when we'll be able to return, but it's definitely one of our family's most memorable and special vacations. If you're the kind of person who would like the Bayaleau Point Cottages, I can't recommend it highly enough.

My wife and I have just returned from 3 weeks in Grenada for our honeymoon. As part of this, we decided to book a week in Carriacou at Bayaleau Point. We based this on the Trip Advisor reviews. It would seem that this is the first time we have been let down by Trip Advisor, as having been there I frankly cannot believe these people are talking about the same place.

So, the good points first: The cottages are pretty in a Gingerbread way- very well designed and constructed. Paradise beach is also very pretty and fairly unspoiled.

Now, to the myriad of bad points!
Although the cottages themselves are pretty, the surrounding areas are not. Some of the surrounding places resemble scorched earth and rubble is piled up everywhere. The local 'town' is full of rubbish and rotting ships The beach is itself at the accommodation is not one you would want to spend any time at, being untidy and full of jetsam. I cannot believe the review that says that people took kids here- what would they do, we wondered apart from get bored incredibly quickly? Aside from the untidy beach, there really isn't anywhere nice to sit in the sun, save for a few plastic chairs. The facilities in the actual cottages are rustic, sure, and fine enough if you like cooking equipment from the mid-1970s.

There is in short, almost nothing to do. This is fine if the areas are pretty enough for you to lie back and just relax, but sadly they're not.

Being bored beyond belief, we decided to head back to Grenada. If you want somewhere really special for your honeymoon, etc then you must go to Le Phare Bleu. They looked after us so well, and really went out on a limb. And no, I don't expect the same level of service from somewhere cheaper, but it was the little things they did to help us out.

Having decided to leave (we stayed two nights), we informed the owners, and a couple of hours later Dave popped round to settle up. Two extra charges had magically appeared, bumping our bill up by about 20%. "They're clearly marked on the website" said Dave. Having later asked where (as they are NOT on the cottage/pricing page) he pointed me to another part of the website. This left a rather sour taste in our mouth especially as Grenadian law dictates that all taxes should be included in the quoted price (from irdgrenada.com)

Dave made a point about us not paying our deposit (thankfully!)- the reason being that I refuse to handover my credit card to an unknown person in the Carribean! I said I was willing to pay by Paypal or another secure method, but he never took us up. How that is relevant to having to pay hidden fees I do not know.

What was even more amusing (now, not then) is that we had to pay a service tax! Considering we did not have a cleaner in the two nights we stayed, and that actually the fridge was fairly dirty, it seemed a bit of a joke. We were ripped off essentially.

Who would find this place suitable?
Families with kids? nope, too little to keep them amused.
Travellers on a budget? Basic in facilities, but expensive in price.
People seeking quality accommodation? Facilities aren't good enough.

So, in summary a massive disappointment and in comparison to the wonderful people and facilities of Le Phare Bleu a total rip off. Avoid!

Firstly, as the title suggests, do not come here if you want to be pampered, told what to do or see or if you (or your children) need constant stimulation. Bayaleau is remote with only a Rum Shack and Small Snackette/shop within walking distance, so come prepared!! The cottages are functional and perhaps are ready for a little TLC, but this is part of the charm (we stayed in the blue cottage pictured), be prepared to meet some wildlife, some of which is friendly (cows, donkey, goats, frogs and birds) and some of which is not (mozzies and sandflies), but if you are prepared and put your mozzie killer on in the room, spray the mozzie net an hour before dark and use repellent, we found it was fine.

We left the doors and windows open all day and didn't have to worry about security. The little beach does need a bit of a tidy-up, but is really not intended as a sun bathing beach but more of access to the sea. Dave the owner was described by a Grenadian local as one of the few remaining pirates and I took this to be a complement. I found him to be very friendly with a great sense of humour and thoroughly recommend the Tobago Cays day trip on his boat (£90 each), which includes all drinks with enough punch to down an elephant.

Things to do:
Go on a boat trip (see the cays, sandy beach, palm island, union island, happy island, mayreau, PSV and PM)
Drink rum
Visit Maphsie and the locals in the rum shack (don't be put off as the locals are great fun)
Drink rum
Read a book whilst drinking rum
Decide to detox and drink beer instead of rum
Oh and did i mention that the local rum is Iron Jack (approx 90% ABV)

The only real negative is that the bed could have been a foot longer and wider.

Please note that we travelled with two young children, for which we find this place not suitable.
The cottages are cute and the view is amazing, but here you will pay twice as much as an equal place right on a perfect beach on the other side of the island (Paradise Beach). In addition to paying a very high rate, you need a car to get around, unless you always want to walk 10-15 minutes to the next bus stop.
The place has its own beach, but this is not kept well and not a place you want to stay on. In fact, also the cottages require some work. The mosquito nets had holes, the toilet seat was broken and there were no mosquito screens on the windows! If this place would cost 50USD per night it would be understandable, but at 140USD per night you expect a higher standard.
The information on the website is out of date, and dinner is not usually offered and if it is, it will cost you over 100 EC (it think it was 115EC) per person, which is more than what you will pay in most nice restaurants. From the information on the website you are inclined to think that this place is child friendly, however since the cottages are on stilts and the kitchenette has gas stoves with easily accessible tubes, we were not comfortable letting our 1 year old crawl around inside.
If you are into kitesurfing, this is a great spot that you'll have all to yourself!
If you are travelling without kids and don't expect any service, you can have a very nice time here and we would have rated it higher, but it is still overpriced compared to what else you get on the island.
We paid a 50% deposit and asked for a refund on the remaining days since the place is not as advertised on the website , however we did not get anything back.

We (some sailing friends) stayed here in April 2004. Why the delay in posting? I was surfing the net and was so relieved to see Bayaleau Point Cottages is still operating. Then I read one incredibly negative review and felt my hackles go up! I echo another reviewer. I can not recommend this "resort" and its owners highly enough but love the fact that it is rustic and pretty untouristy. Sigh. Go ahead. Stay here. It will be a highlight of your travels. Relax. And enjoy. The property has four cottages, each with a colour theme. The owner, Dave, was surprised when I mentioned that they reminded me of the chattel homes in Barbados. I sensed a whiff of Danish sensibility (my Dad was Danish) in the tasteful restrained decorating of each cottage. I am upset that I cannot rmember the colour of my cottage but I lucked out and got the one at the top of the hill with the breathtaking view of the Caribbean. Ulla's meal was delicious. I regret I did not take one of Dave's boat trips. (His wife was highly complimentary of his tour master skills and from other reviews I have read, it would appear Ulla was accurate). Carriacou is pretty special. Here is how I describe the island: on every other Caribbean island, when I waved, the locals always waved back. In Carriacou, the locals waved first. Other than Petit Carriacou, Carriacou is probably one of the most undeveloped of all Caribbean islands. The immigration and customs procedure when we landed and entered the one room (I exaggerate only slightly) airport building, made me smile. I was not to know it at the point, but it was indicative of the Carriacou island experience. We had to wait until the customs officer returned from lunch. When he arrived he was somewhat dismayed at the sight of our 14 bags. He took a desultory look at my friend's computer. The cabbie asked us where we were staying. When we replied, "Bayaleau Point Cottages", the fellow said matter a factly, "Oh, David and Ulla's place." Idyllic. Beautiful. Good people. Great food. Amazing rates. Where everybody knows your name. I recommend Bayaleau Point Cottages highly and hope, one day, to return. It would appear from reviews of people who stayed here in 2014 that the cottages remain the same as when I stayed here 10 years ago. Yahoo! Susan Bottern, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada

My wife and I have now stayed at Bayaleau Point Cottages on three separate occasions and every time that we visit we love it more and more. It's beautiful, relaxed, tranquil, peaceful and serene vibe are truly unique and the owners and staff are some of the nicest people that we have ever met.
ALSO... Every time that we have stayed at Bayaleau Point Cottages we have experienced the pure joy of a day trip on Dave's (the owner) boat, 'Mostly Harmless', to the Tobago Cays and other islands in the Grenadines. This is an excursion not to be missed!!! The sheer beauty of the surrounding area; with it's turquoise clear waters, lovely coral reefs and magnificent sea turtles, is the stuff that dreams are made of! The Captain and crew member on the boat were very friendly and supplied us with a seemingly limitless amount of delicious refreshments, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available. Just the boat ride in itself was a really exciting way to travel the beautiful seas. On one of our visits we brought our families with us and all of them were equally entertained, impressed and elevated to a higher level of tranquillity than any of them had ever experienced.
We really cannot express our love for this place, the people and the services that they provide enough. For a totally WONDERFUL experience we highly recommend staying at Bayaleau Point Cottages and booking one of the truly excellent excursions on Dave's 'Mostly Harmless' boat.
BOOK IT NOW - it will change your life for the better, forever!!!

If you are looking for a laid back caribbean experience and prefer authentic surroundings and hosts - you should pay Dave Goldhill a visit at Windward, Carriacou! We spend 8 nights in the blue cottage, incl. the baby blue, and had the best holiday experience. We are a Danish family with two adults and three children, and we enjoyed a few tours on "Mostly Harmless" to Tobago Cays. Fantastic experience. The cottages are basic but have all the neccesary amenities to be selfcatering. If we ever get the possibility to return to Carriacou, we will definetely visit Bayaleau Point Cottages again.

Robinson “Calypso” !
Just imagine that your ship washed up on a conch shelled natural beach. You find your way to a path that leads to a forest of fruit trees and colorful cottages. Your Robinson "Calypso" hos,t Dave, washed up on that very same beach years ago. Dave befriended several bushmen and built every amazing thing that lays before your eyes....

If you want to have a real, un-fabricated, adventurous vacation--you want to really get away from it all, re-kindle your soul, experience nature as it was 100 years ago, be with local people who will open their homes and hearts to you … Bayaleau Point Cottages is the place for you.

The happily-colored cottages will cause even the most stressed out to be relaxed….your body is virtually bonded to the outdoors…..A flash micro-climate rain storm will play music upon the tin roof … You can run outside to your own private Idaho… naked if you wish ! Take in the nature and you will realize just how awesome the world of Carriacou is … Birds will wake you to a new day where you will feel like it is your first -- and you will want to get as much out of it as if it was your last....

I hope you get to meet Dave’s amazing family. To meet children that grew up with such appreciation of a different culture and nature and all its offerings was such a treat…..

Ok … The truth, I have never written a testimonial for an adventure before. I have traveled the world several times over and I had more adventure and relaxation in the 3 days I was in Carriacou then any place ever …

Here are a couple of must do’s around the island while staying with Dave at Bayaleau Point Cottages…

You Must go to the Kayak Café (Best View) and meet Savory Sally for lunch. Ask Sally to make you her famous “Carriacouda” steak (Barracuda).

When you walk out the door of the Kayak, walk down two doors to your right to what I considered the “capital” of Carriacou--Bill Paterson’s Place. Part convenience store, part bar and part “town office”, you need to find the secret door to the back and order a Carib beer and experience the way Bill runs the town … Bill is a mix between the Wizard of Oz and Winston Churchill … He is the “Mayor” and Justice of the Peace … He will marry you, divorce you, take your taxes, stamp your passport and file the deeds to your new Carriacou property on his tavern porch. Get your picture taken with him … I prize mine more than my picture with the last President I had dinner with …

Ok… Time to go see Curtis near Paradise Beach at the Off the Hook Beach Bar and Grill (473-443-8748). It will BLOW YOUR MIND !!! Have Curtis make you lobster and play you some reggae with his own bongos … if it’s Wednesday, you might even get a bonfire on the beach!

Need transportation while you are on the island? Call this number: (473) 410-9299 and Stafford will come to pick you up (best cabbie ever!!!) and take you where you want to go. If you don’t know where you want to go, Stafford will help you figure it out … Even if I had my own car, I would roll with Stafford for he is a very incredible human being to meet … Stafford will go beyond all means to make certain your Island destinations are perfect …

Time to relax … Have Stafford take you back home to the Bayaleau and rest up for the MUST MUST do…I have been scuba diving for 30 years in most of the world’s most amazing hot spots and this time I just snorkeled…I swam with 8 sea turtles and rode two of them ! You will see the amazing Tobago Cays … Dave has a great team to take you out on his custom boat … Get them to stop at HAPPY ISLAND and get a real Rastafarian Rum Punch … I don’t normally drink rum … But … This is a must!

Ok enough tips … just Relax … Learn how to be Limin Man (if you don't know what that means--just ask Dave!)....

One last thing… Get Dave to yell “SCOUT” … You just may get to meet a real live bushman that will teach you a bit about "LIFE"!

Enjoy Your Adventure !!! If you don’t assume a little risk, You miss out on a lot of life !
