My wife and I stayed at Jenny's Place on Grand Anse Beach in Grenada in February 2006. It's laid back, it's comfortable, there's always good home-cooked food and plenty to drink down by the beach, it's extraordinarily reasonable in price, it's not crowded but the other guests are all interesting and come from all over the world. Jenny and Shaun are great hosts. You don't need a car since you can get to the "city" (St. George's) easily on the bus. The Grenada Country Club is close by (it's the only golf course on the island but don't expect manicured greens) and while it's tough to walk up to the course, it's very easy to walk down from it. If you want a relaxed low-pressure getaway from life, it's just the place. If you want an air-conditioned, sterile, five-star resort, then walk down the beach, pay a lot more, have a lot less fun and meet more boring people.

We stayed at Jenny's Place for two weeks at Easter 06. We felt at home at once due to the very friendly couple running the small hotel. There are only 5 rooms in this private hotel and we had the Hibiscus Suite on the upper floor with a magnificent view on the sea. The suite was very spacious with a stove and fridge. Very clean! The hotel is located directly at wonderful Grand Anse with a short walk to the main road. We ate at the Turning Point Diner several times and had delicious food at very reasonable prices. All our wishes were fulfilled right away and we were always helped with our expeditions on the beautiful island. It's not a hotel to dress up or where you pay for a swimming pool you won't need anyway , but it's a wonderful place to feel at home and relax. We payed 120 USD including breakfast so that's a very good price for a lovely place directly at the beach! We'll definetely go back!

Several of your readers have written asking for views on Jennys Place, under the new management.

Having stayed at Jennys Place (JP) twice now, the first in 2007 and this time for 15 days over Christmas 2009, we have no hesitation in recommending JP under the new management team.

Prior to the new team taking over in October 2009 Jenny (and Shaun) had been great hosts and had a huge following, a fact highlighted by the number of visitors asking after them during our stay. It is therefore no reflection on them when we say JP is even better now, newly decorated with a more relaxed atmosphere and a much improved restaurant.

As mentioned by pkt13; Phil, Roxanne and Mark (the now leaseholders) did visit, but not every day during our stay, having said that and to be fair to all, the establishment ran really well under their new on site team so there was no apparent need for them to oversee things on a daily basis. The on site manager (and excellent chef) Leenet and her staff, Bernadette, Niki and Hillary make you feel ‘one of the family’ from the time you arrive and this develops into a long lasting friendship during your stay. The friendship began when we arrived by taxi from the airport and were greeted by a cheerful Leenet who came running across the grass to greet us and ‘grab’ one of our cases. We explained we could manage! To which she cheerfully replied “Yes you can, but you are guests at Jennys Place now and it’s time to relax” - and that is how it was for the whole time we were there. Wonderfully relaxed!

JP is thankfully not a 5-Star hotel with the formality and entertainment one expects from such venues. If you want that and a rowdy nightlife, JP is probably not for you, although you can easily travel to find the nightlife!

We had another fabulous holiday and will return as we love the relaxed pace of life, the friendly Grenadian staff and the fact that we were treated as friends, not as a room number where staff members fail to notice or acknowledge you as they pass by. Here you are not pressurised to vacate your room at a set time for the cleaning staff; housekeeper Bernadette will arrive and cheerfully ask if it’s convenient ‘to do you now’ and if so, is there anything specific you require in addition to the usual cleaning and changes of linen etc? If it’s not convenient she will re-visit when it is! This attitude applies equally to all staff, if you want anything or however unlikely, you are unhappy with anything, mention it and it will be dealt with in the same friendly and relaxed manner.

For those who have stayed before, the security dogs have gone and although the gates are locked at night you only have to ask Leenet for the codes if you intend coming back in the early hours, or wish to go onto the beach before sunrise. As for the beach, JP is ideally placed for those who enjoy an early morning walk before breakfast, as you can step onto the sands and take a leisurely stroll, perhaps watching the occasional flying fish, or observing the fishermen hauling out their nets, before returning for an equally leisurely breakfast at the waters edge. Here you can watch the water taxis bringing in the almost daily influx of cruise ship passengers (who are thankfully landed at least half mile to a mile along the beach!). The benefit of this, is that you have the northern end of the beach to yourself; JP bar and restaurant are open daily (except Tuesday) and prices compare favourably with other local establishments, so you have no need to venture off site if you want a totally relaxing holiday.

Things to do from JP; as a couple who hired a vehicle last time, we went for a change this time and used the mini-buses, which are an experience not to be missed (perhaps not for the faint hearted!)! JP is only a very short walk up a steep incline to the main road where the buses stop at the post office. Not that you need a bus stop, as most times the bus driver or conductor will see you walking up, hoot, stop and wait for you. If you don’t want the bus – just shake your hand from side to side and they will be off. The fare into St Georges (10 minutes to the north) or to a convenient stop a short distance from Spice Land Mall (5-minutes to the south) is EC2.50 pp and EC3.00 pp on Sunday/Bank Holiday.
*One of our many highlights of this holiday – was a Christmas Eve bus ride into St Georges, hurtling along the highway in a packed ‘Number 1’ bus with windows open and Steel Pan Music and singers blaring out Christmas carols! Absolutely brilliant!

If you want to go further or take a trip around the Island, you can either go by bus (take a bus to St Georges bus terminus from where you can catch buses to anywhere on the island) alternatively ask Leenet to call you a taxi or arrange for one of the recognised tours. For us, the taxi worked well, a call to a taxi company had taxi driver Keith at our door within 10 minutes; we explained where we had already visited and what we wanted to see – and off we went for an inexpensive day out that saw us touring the island visiting Grenada Craft Centre, a Nutmeg Plant, Cocoa Station, Museum as well as a Herb and Spice Garden. Nothing was too much trouble and we took as long as we wanted at each venue, with Keith also stopping everytime we saw something we wanted to photograph!

Jennys Place made our holiday, the staff were absolutely divine, the rooms spotless the gardens pristine, the food excellent and the location ideally suited us at the quieter end of Grand Anse Beach. We will be back!

My husband, I and my one and a half year old daughter just came back from vacation and stayed for two days at Jenny’s place. We stayed in the bougainvillea apartment. On the second night of our stay, someone picked the lock and tried to enter our apartment at around 3:00 am. Thankfully, and I do believe it was the grace of God, that I woke up several times for the night, and at that point my husband and I was lying in bed but not asleep. It sends chills down my spine as I am writing this, but we both lie on the bed and watch the door open at 3:00 am in the morning. Then my husband leap of the bed and looked outside, the thief took off, and my husband chased after him. He jumped the barbed wire fence and got away. We stayed up the rest of the night until day break when we heard a lawnmower outside. It was the maintenance guy. We talked with him about the incident and he tried to reach the manager on the phone. It was not until closer to noon before the manager showed up. I don’t know what would have been worse, if my husband had caught the thief or to let him go, since we had no access to a local telephone, was the only guess on the property, and would have been stuck with this person until day break the next day.

Jenny’s place is relatively clean, spacious and comfortable. But what troubled me from the start was how poorly the place is run. The location is on the very north end of the famous Grand Anse Beach and very secluded. There was no telephone in the room, no security at night or during the day, no contact information to the staff after hours, and the security fence is worthless. All the workers leave the premises before dust. We felt abandoned. They neglected to tell us we were the only guess on the property.

We went in the off season and there were no drinks in the bar at the restaurant. That was not all. Jenny’s place still charged us for the two nights we were there, including the night the incident took place. We were on vacation with a baby and was violated, scared out of our minds that night and could not go back to sleep after the incident. One would think the least they would do is not charge us for that night, but they did.

There was a prior review on trip advisor where a guess had a similar experience, but we overlooked it as just one experience, considering there are many other great reviews. Jenny made him out to be a liar in her response to his comment. My family and I had the exact same experience. There is no telling how often this happens at Jenny’s Place. Someone is either unlocking the doors or picking the locks at night.

In my opinion the staff lack training, and the place is cheaply run at the expense of the safety of the guess. I will not recommend this place to anyone, it is not safe.

I was born in Grenada (now live in the US) and my personal experience troubled me on another level. Tourism is the lifeblood of Grenada and every effort should be made to protect and ensure the safety of visitors for the duration of their stay on the Island. Jenny Place has demonstrated a lack of concern about tourism or the safety of her guess while in her care.

Response from Jennysplgrn, Owner at Jenny's Place
Responded 30 Oct 2012
Before responding to this review we undertook a thorough investigation which provided the following information: Earlier in the evening in question our Manager, Ann, realized that the door to the apartment had not been locked. She knocked and asked the husband to lock his door. He called out to say that he would. In the low season our security is coordinated with the local police force who patrol Grand Anse beach. Our report states that the property was indeed policed on the night in question by the local police who were at the northern end of the beach where Jenny's is located. This arrangement only applies in our off season. We provide our own security patrol for the balance of the year. Jenny's Place is not at all isolated. It is very centrally located. Ten minutes drive from the airport and 10 minutes drive from the town of St. George's. We are five minutes walk from the main street and situated on a laneway that is close to several other buildings. While this period is our low season, we do provide basic services. For instance, the couple in question purchased seven beer and several rum punches earlier in the evening from our restaurant. Thus saying that there were no drinks available was inaccurate. When the police were called and investigated they concluded that the door of the apartment was most likely not locked and the guests confirmed that they had not used the security chain. Jenny's Place has excellent staff which is evidenced by our many positive reviews. The guests were given back their deposit and final payment. They only paid for the two nights for which they had stayed. This seemed fair in the circumstances and the guests appeared completely agreeable to this arrangement. It should be noted that nothing was taken from these guests and the police concluded that there was no evidence of forced entry and nothing had been rearranged in the apartment. On behalf of the Management and staff of Jenny's we apologise for any distress that was experienced by these guests. Security remains one of our major concerns and the good name of Jenny's Place and the comfort of our guests, at all times, is paramount. Having said this, positive Tourism is the life blood of our small business and the island of Grenada. Nobody takes this lightly. These guests had a long discussion with our Manager before leaving our property. They expressed thanks to us for our efforts in the situation. We are therefore surprised and disappointed that they thought it necessary to write such a negative review. Jennifer (owner) Jenny's Place, Grenada

Stayed in Sunflower room for one night, some one picked the locked and crept into room in the middle of night and took handbag etc.
Was quite annoyed but got even angrier with the managements response. This has happened to others in the past.
Will not return the this place.

Roxyrat: We have read your disturbing and disappointing report and have the following response: 1) your account of the incident was inconsistent. You had lost or misplaced your key. 2) When we called the police to investigate the matter, you were unwilling to file a report and were not on the premises 3) The police found no sign of a break in 4) The locks at Jenny's Place cannot be picked because of a special security feature that we have used. 5) We have regular security on the premises and no unusual findings were reported that night 6) We believe that the statement that something similar has occurred in the past is unfair, as we are personally unaware of a similar incident 7) We expressed our regret and have taken every effort to investigate this matter that continues to puzzle us. Everyone can be assured that every effort has and will be taken to avoid a recurrence of this kind. The Management Jenny's Place

I placed two family members at Jenny's and visited them often during their stay. I have to say the rooms were superb, the welcome exceptional and the location unbeatable.

I would far rather stay at Jenny's than any of the supposed 5 star resorts. A real personnel service and with a great big smile. Thanks to all who assisted me in providing an immense family surprise.

My husband, mother-in-law and I traveled to Grenada in late October to visit our son who is a student at St. George's Medical School. We had a late arrival so we did not get to Jenny's until 9:30 pm or so. We were greeted with warmth, and the staff offered to cook dinner for us! This experience continued throughout our stay of 12 nights: the staff was always pleasant and helpful, the food was delicious and the suite was always very clean. Our stay at Jenny's Place was so much more enjoyable than staying at hotel, and we had a view of the Caribbean from the veranda off our room.

We will be visiting our son again soon, and there is no doubt as to where we will stay: It's Jenny' s Place for us!

This wonderful little bar is right on the edge of the Caribbean on Grand Anse Beach. It is currently being reinvented and modernised by the new manager, Erik, and the amazing views that are now revealed following the removal of a very ugly fence need to be seen. I understand food will soon be available and cannot wait to go there for a sundowner and dinner.

Grand Anse Beach in Grenada is beautiful, and at the northern quieter end you'll find Jenny's Place, a pretty guesthouse with only seven apartments or suites. Stroll across the lawn bordered by lush plants and trees, through the compact bar / restaurant ....and there we were on that fab beach. For our first ever visit to Grenada we couldn't have stayed at a place more more-ish; of course we'll go back. Our room on the ground floor was huge, with kitchenette (continental breakfast supplied daily) and shower-room. Our balcony was where we mostly sat when not in the turquoise ocean or the bar! Mu husband and I are not fond of large posh all-inclusives though there are several on Grand Anse beach: for us this top-quality guest-house with its superb staff and perfect location, could not have been bettered.

Don't stay here if you need to be surrounded by people, if you need constant attention and the noise and bustle of a large resort. Don't stay here if you want to queue for a place next to the swimming pool and are happy to sit in a row with all the other resort guests chatting on your mobile phone.

Stay here if you love the quiet end of the beach, where few cruise-ship passengers stray, where the staff are low key and end up more like your friends. Stay here if you remember those holidays at the beach when you were a kid and the room was large, cool and airy and you could sit anywhere you liked on the beach, and no one would stop you walking on the grass.

The accommodation is simple and a bit old fashioned, in a comfortable way. Fresh fruit, bread, cheeses, yoghurt, butter and nutmeg jelly, is delivered to your room each evening so you can make your own breakfast the next morning, sitting on your balcony enjoying the tranquility. The restaurant has definitely the best location on Grand Anse Beach, its small, simple and has good food (and great cocktails). The location is perfect - halfway between the town and the 'strip' mall and supermarket, with the bus stop at the top of the driveway so you can go either way without much trouble - although the walk down the beach to the shops is lovely.

We loved Jenny's so much we stayed another week. Can't say much more than that ! I hesitated to write this review because I didn't want to share the secret and risk ruining the charm of the guest-house feel... so please don't change a thing, Jenny !
