Visited in early September 2020 for 1 week.
The new "normality" looks like this.

Masks are a must in restaurants and lobby. Every time you enter the buffet/restaurant, your temperature is measured. The food in the buffet is behind glass about a meter away from the visitors. The names of the dishes are written in Spanish (large print) and English (small print). If your vision is not 100%, it is not always possible to see which is which. You need to point your finger or tell the waiters every time what you want them to put to your plate.

You are expected to reserve breakfast, lunch and dinner at the buffet every day using their website. In practice, we constantly forgot to do this, but we were allowed into the buffet without a reservation.

On the day of arrival we tried to book an Italian restaurant and a Steakhouse, but the only available date was on the last day before our departure.

The room door is opened using a chip embedded in the bracelet.

All staff are wearing masks, even the workers cleaning the seaweed on the beach.
The sunbeds on the beach are washed with some kind of liquid. In fact, anythign that gets cleaned gets marked with a small blue sign saying it was disinfected.

The hotel is about 20% full on weekdays, and closer to 30% on weekends. On weekends, locals come to the beach and love to blast music from speakers. Despite the fact that in the adult part of the beach there are close to 30 people, it was difficult to find a quiet place on weekends (visitors with their own music plus music coming from the bars).

We got sunbeds on the first line without any problems at about 9.30 am. There were always seats on the second line.

The ocean is clean with practically no seaweeds. Waves are pretty constant, 2 days out of 7 waves were quite strong, but we swam every day. Buoys are relatively far, so there is enough space for swimming. The wind is also strong, therefore after 5 pm it becomes cool on the shore, and you don't really want to get into the water anymore.

Food can be ordered to the room with a delicious but limited menu (nachos as starters, then pasta, burgers, fries, pita)

There is a souvenir shop in the lobby, the prices are 20% lower than at the Punta Cana airport.

I am grateful to the staff for their hospitality and high level of service, and to the hotel management that they continue to receive guests despite this covid situation. I believe that the probability of getting sick with coronavirus (flu, tuberculosis, mumps, insert the right one) in all-inclusive is basically zero. I do not regret for a second that I went on vacation, despite the constant intimidation and recommendations to stay at home.

Stayed at Ambar from Jan 2nd for two weeks with my wife and 21year old daughter. The hotel had enjoyed a revamp within the past 12 months and the rooms were large and faultless even with three of us in the same room. The lack of a separate bathroom was rather novel, a simple sliding door would suffice and give a little privacy when using the very large shower.

A L'Carte restaurants each night and would rate them out of 10 as follows:-
MEAT 10/10 great Rib Eye
Potofino 7/10
Limbo 9/10
El Olivo 3/10 (so called Gourmet Restaurant but by far the most disappointing meal and service)
Maiko 10/10 (superb food and great service from both waiter and 'Chop Chop' chef)
Thali 10/10 (Tasting platter is fantastic!!!!)
Rodizio 9/10
Asian Takara 5/10

Pool and beach were great.

Sports Bar was very disappointing as it only opens at 4pm.

Besides GM Pablo, 4 other staff that excelled were Santiago at M.E.A.T, Graydin our amazing butler that simply made things happen and the two girls who treated us like royalty at lunchtime were Denni and Erica. At the end of any holiday the three of us always compare what we liked best about the holiday and all three of us were unanimous that our 2 hour lunch overlooking the beach outside M.E.A.T was our stand out part of a totally relaxing holiday. The two girls went a long way to making that our decision.

There can be improvements made but pound for pound and value for money I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel, it offers great value for money.

Just spent a very nice October week in Punta Cana and more notably at the Bahia Principe Ambar resort.
In our experience traveling to many destinations, we where impressed with the hospitality, cleanliness and attention that only a higher end resort can achieve.
In this era of Covid precautions, we found the staff taking every effort to insure our safety and to be preventive in insuring no undo transmissions.
Food! You wanna talk food! Aces across the board. Cooked by pro chefs and served by a very friendly staff will leave you not wanting.
So, everything sounds good so far eh?
In the Dominican Republic there is a government mandated curfew for everyone living outside the resort that means no party's or groups getting together or you face a large fine or worse. How would you get around this you ask? Why you and your many friends would get together and rent a room or six scattered throughout the hotel allowing you and your hoard of twenty somethingsto get drunk, play loud music and talk at a level that you could be heard at, at a Metalica concert til 4am.
There is zero insulation between floors and walls so if you're like us and in your later years tough luck!
Most hotel's these day's are at 50% capacity and work with minimal staff so they're happy to have anyone stay there. On an island with an economy in tatters the mighty buck dictates standards.
Otherwise, we met some great people and enjoyed watching the sun rise and long walks on the beach.
Would we go back? Maybe when things improve with the virus situation cause it is a very nice resort.
Oh, one more point.
They will try very hard to get you to buy into thier Privilege club. It's not cheap and the presentation is slick.

We have just returned from beautiful Punta Cana on New Years Eve after spending 14 days there over Xmas. The first thing I can say is the beach is pure paradise it's amazing but it can get very busy especially with people walking.

Now for the hotel, the rooms are great all refurbished with good facilities and also ours was very clean, but we had 2 rooms one for our daughter and hers smelt so bad and damp even with the oil burner on and was not as clean as ours. I suppose we should have had her moved but I wanted her nextdoor with been a young woman on her own and also I didn't want them coming and treating her room with any chemicles after hearing stories of late. Now we did e mail before asking for a room with a bath and it was our anniversary, but when we arrived we were given a room with no bath and not even nextdoor to our daughter so we asked to see if there was a room with a bath and guess what? the nextdoor room to my daughter was empty and had a bath funny how they didn't give us it for free as I have heard of lots of people getting free upgrades but we ended up paying another $280 dollars for the bath which I do think they could have given us really seen as we had paid for 2 rooms and over Xmas it was very expensive! The butler was Greydin and he was good they are only like guest relation there to help with anything you might need, also the mini bar does not get replenished good as we only had 1 bottle of vodka while there and never got anymore.
The staff are on a whole great and very friendly always smile and chatty but you do see a difference how they work they can be quite lazy we could never get a drink in the lobby bar even when was empty they stand round chatting, looking at their phone etc my husband always ended up going to the bar and it was the same in the buffet waiting for coffee and juice it's really not 5* service.

Now the food, we are real foodies and go to a lot of expensive restaurants having said that you will always find something to eat there is so much choice and my daughter and I did enjoy most of it but my husband thought the food was poor. The buffet was probably better than the restaurants, for us Limbo was supposed to be the posh one and we were really looking forward to it,only to be very dissapointed it was awful! uncooked lamb and very tough we didn't even stay for dessert and didn't end up going back. Meat and Portafino are much better we enjoyed these and I wouldn't even visit the others in the other hotels as they were disgusting.I did find though that they booked me in all the same restaurants there were a lot we didn't manage to try maybe these could have been better but they just booked me in the same ones all the time after emailing before and asking for a different one each night. I have to say after a little moaning that we did have a good holiday and really enjoyed it just lower your expectations a little after all it's not 5* in England and you are definitely staying in the best with Ambar,we will be going back but will try another hotel as life is too short to go to the same all the time.

This is a late review. My family visited this resort in December of 2017. Prior to our visit we had made a few requests for the location of the room. The hotel staff replied to us immediately and the upon our arrival the request had been taken care of.

The staff at the lobby bar are wonderful. The ladies doing their rounds will often ask if you require any drinks long before you even make the request at the bar. The tea and coffee station is always full with little snacks.

The food quality and quantity at the buffet is very good. However, the variety didn't change too much from day to day. This is understandable for breakfast but it would have been nice to see a little bit of a change for lunch.
The a la carte restaurants are fab. The Brazilian Steakhouse was a standout in terms of service, food and drink.

Beaches are pristine with staff cleaning the shores of debris throughout the day. The pools are lovely as well.
We had a bit of an issue with housekeeping not cleaning the room well past 4pm which impacted our ability to get ready for dinner reservations. We made about two requests to the front desk to have the room cleaned prior to 3pm. After the third day we had no issues and the room was cleaned really well before too late in the evening.

The night-time entertainment at this hotel was wonderful. There was something new to look forward to each night whether it was a live band or dancers who usually performed at the Bahia village. Trolleys run frequently across the multiple properties on this resort so you can catch entertainment elsewhere as well. For someone who likes and doesn't have mobility issues, the walk from property to property is quite pleasant.

We attended the Christmas Gala Dinner here and it was very well organized. The event was organized in the main buffet and it was beautifully decorated with ice sculptures, carvings and the works.

Since our visit to Ambar, we have been to two other Bahia Luxury properties in Jamaica and Mexico. So far, Ambar tops the list.

We arrived on Christmas day not overly impressed with the check-in as they tried to put us all in a room. I along with some others did go straight to reception and checked in there. We were told we had a room with single beds not ideal but after a long day travelling, we said that it would be fine and it was a good result, we were in room 62316 which was in the perfect location.

We could not fault the service in general however some of the speciality restaurants could do with some monitoring as we found some offered bad service and some offered cold food.

Our favourite was Portofino we ate there three times, the Thali was one we were looking forward to but the food looked lovely but it was stone cold we sent it back and it just come back in a warm dish. We walked of Rodizio as the service as so poor they were trying to give us meat before we had even seen a menu which we had to ask for we also had to ask for drinks when we tried to speak to someone (not just in this restaurant) there seemed to be quite a language barrier.

We were surprised that you could not get water in a bottle around the pool or any of the other bars which is what we drink mainly during the day. Also take your own straws they don’t even have paper ones. However, if you by a Pina Colada for $5 on the beach you get a plastic straw!

The entertainment was pretty good but it would be nice to alternate it so you see a different show on your second week but with so many different bars and venues as such it was not a problem.

Loved the fact it was adults only but the pool area was really cramped and was full of umbrellas so you were chasing the sun. We spent most of our time in the pool in the next hotel along which was really nice.

We think they should spray the grounds as there were an awful lot of Mosquitos and we both got bitten day and night even though we were using our Jungle Juice.

All in all we had a brilliant holiday very relaxing and enjoyable. We would go again and certainly would recommend it.

Arrived at Ambar hotel, to be told by reception that our room was a twin although we had booked a Double, they then offered us a double room with a swim up pool, for an extra 50 dollars a night and we were there 14 nights!! We politely declined and asked for the room that we had paid for and booked, and then they did have one but at 19;00 is was not ready, when we challenged this, then suddenly had one available,,,beware of the up selling!
Once in the room, it was fantastic, huge bed, great air con, mini bar, clean, perfect room.
The food was fantastic, good selection, but if you want to go to the restaurants you really need to be ahead of the game as they are all booked out, although when you actually get there they are not full? I m not sure why you can book before you go there must be a fairer way of making sure people get to the restaurants and to the main buffet. Although the restaurants are good, and well worth the visit.
A disappointing thing is there are no bars open on the beach after 18;00, it would be lovely to be able to sit on the beach in the evenings,in casual wear.
The beach bar staff were fantastic, fun, professional, and thanks Wendy ( yes that is his name), and Confesa, and the twins, made our holiday, maybe promote them to reception as they had lots more personality.
The main bar is in the hotel foyer, which is very odd and lacks personality, there is a sports bar with a converted van selling, yes selling gins? No one ever bought one!
They are really missing a trick by not using their biggest asset the beautiful beach!

BEWARE, dont book a excursion with Coming 2, they sold us a diving trip that did not exist and a luxury trip for up to 14 people that turned out to be a party boat for 100 people, sadly the hotel management who recommended in the arrival chat that we use them , wanted nothing to do with them when we complained, we are still attempting to get our money back.
Top tips... bring everything you may need medications, 10 headache tablets 31 dollars, body wash etc very expensive.
Money.. bring dollars, the exchange rate in reception if they have any is ridiculous. you need small notes, it seems sad but by tipping when you order means you get better service.
We found it disappointing that you really cant leave the resort other than for a planned excursion.

Having said that we did have a great holiday, the place is spotless and the attention to detail is good, the cleaners came twice a day to your room, the grounds were very well kept, coffee shop staff were friendly and this is a good to be able to get tea and coffee all day long.spirits were good, wine was average.

The beach is beautiful and clean, enjoyed the free wind sports, the pools are great nice swim up bars, did enjoy the trip but would not book it again.

This hotel is obviously aimed at the North American market with large bedrooms, open plan bathrooms, private balcony and ground floor rooms with swim up facilities All the hotel facilities are in good condition and well maintained and the bedroom look like they have had a recent refurbishment with attractive modern decor.
There is a good choice of dishes for all meals and the Las Brisas beach restaurant has a more relaxed atmosphere for lunch with simpler dishes. The buffet restaurant had a special fish night, with plenty of lobsters and large shrimps together with their usual cooking of a large grouper or red snapper, which was very popular
In all restaurants all drinks are subject to waiter service which means at quieter times it is often difficult to get a refill.
There is a large free-form swimming pool and a large area on the beach for relaxing under the palms. Waiter service for all kinds of drinks is available and the waiters are friendly and attentive although you can get your own drinks if you prefer. There are only just enough loungers in these areas and it would assist if there were more so as to reduce the hunt for the free ones. The music played round the pool is far too loud in the afternoon spoiling the atmosphere but is not a problem on the beach
The hotel is surrounded by 6 other group hotels enabling you to use some of their facilities especially the pre-bookable a la carte restaurants. The whole site is large and there are golf buggy transfers between them and common areas
The beach has soft white sand, which does not get hot, and which stretches for a long distance in either direction making it a nice place for a long walk
The grounds are large and attractive and very well maintained and being level makes it easy to walk around.
The Ambar lobby is large and attractive with good quality evening entertainment especially the 2 dance shows we watched
Despite the negative points we had a very relaxing week in this quality hotel. There are lots of staff who are happy to assist and are very friendly. I

First, I have to say that me and my husband went and we are part of the BP Priviledge Club, so it might be different for most of the guests. However, as a member of the priviledge club, we are entitled to premium drinks, and discounts throughout the BP hotels. Because of Covid, I understand that things are pretty limited considering that probably half or less people are staying on the premises. However, we were not able to enjoy much of those privileges. It was very hard to use to enjoy a nice Martini unless it was a the priviledge club lounge. They also did not have or did not know how to make all the drinks we asked for.

Second, I have to congratulate Bahia Principe Hotels for all the precautions they are taking due to Covid. It is wonderful, truly. They require masks on public areas, they clean/ disinfect all the seats and tables before use and have labels to let the guests know when the areas are clean. They also have hand sanitizer all over the place for anyone to use. They would not let you in restaurants unless you wear a mask and have disinfected your hands.

Third, everyone is super friendly; always willing to help, smiling and in a great mood. Hard working employees all over.

Fourth, during our stay, not all the restaurants were open. We were only able to reserve at the Greek, Indian Restaurant, The Palmyra buffet and on our fourth night were able to enjoy the M.E.A.T restaurant that to my opinion was the best one of all. The greek was also very good but the meat was better. Again, I will give them the benefit of the doubt for being limited due to covid, but they have more potential when it comes to the food & restaurants. I was hoping there was more variety and freshness in the buffet. More original dishes from the DR itself. I never saw any characteristic dishes from the DR such as mofongo, mangu, sancocho or asopao for instance. I think that their foods are more focused to Americans, not even Europeans. Although, I do not consider that a bad thing, I believe that when you visit a country you want to get to know their food and such.

Fifth, their shows at night are spectacular ! They are incredible. You can see they put a lot of work on their performances and I really applaude when employees enjoy what they do and put effort in things.

I dont want to write a thousand words,
So after all, I would say that our stay was very good. We had a Swim-up room and were extremely pleased. However I was expecting more from their foods & drinks.

We would give it another try though. !

Firstly, thanks to Reme and Claire from the Bahia Principe reservations team in Spain, who made the booking process easy and reassuring during these uncertain times.

We travelled from Malaga to Madrid on a small Air Europa plane and then to Santo Domingo again with Air Europa on a modern Dreamliner. Unfortunately no flights are currently travelling from Spain to Punta Cana directly, so we had a 2 hour transfer from the Capital’s airport. I can only say that this was a small price to pay to get to paradise.

We’ve visited the DR on 4 previous occasions, but have to say that this time was the best. Probably as we are so grateful to have travelled long-haul during these crazy times.

We stayed for 14 nights so were able to enjoy all the food options, which were all excellent.

Most things have been covered in previous reviews but I would like to make a point about the following:

Scuba Diving
The dive team were excellent. My husband and I are rescue divers so know a thing or two about diving, and they were extremely professional and Covid aware ensuring all equipment was disinfected before each dive. We were blessed with Pedro from Menorca as our guide who took good care of us and arranged for us to hook up with another couple so we could have an affordable day trip to the Bayahibe area and enjoy some excellent diving there too. Phil was the face of the centre and was a lovely man. Go diving with Scubaquatic!

Room
The rooms are lovely. We had a luxury corner room on the top floor. The difference is that you have a big bath in the corner. I am a soaker, so it was good to have a bath option. Tip: Pack some bubble bath if you have a tub. This was one thing that was not provided. Owing to COVID the coffee pots have been removed. No problem as you can just order a coffee through room service and it will be brought to you... however if you are able to pack a travel kettle, and have the room this may work well for you.
Plug Sockets are always a big preoccupation for us with several items needing to be charged each night and we travel with a big bag filled with all our chargers, so it was a nice surprise to see that there are USB ports on each side of the bed, plus the sockets can also be used for USA as well as European 2 pin plugs. The lighting in the room must be mentioned as it was one of the best lit rooms we have ever stayed in. The blackout curtains also did the trick for darkening the room for our Spanish siestas.

The concierges Watson and Adriel did a fantastic job in looking after us. The wifi was fantastic and we could even WhatsApp call with video from our beach bed. We also need to give a shout out to Marta Garcia who is from Malaga and really looked after us during our trip. The beach is just beautiful and all the staff at the beach restaurants (Angelo, Manuel, Julieta) were kind and attentive.

Hasta luego Luxury Ámbar. We will be back.

Wifi worked great when we were there last month (Nov. '24). The only place it was spotty at times was the beach.

Do you need reservations for dinner? We like NOT having too. It is a deal breaker for us.
