We were a little apprehensive after seeing the one or two very negative reviews, how can a hotel go from 5 stars to 1 star and back to 5 stars in the same weeks? Clearly there were a few disgruntled guests who decided to run down this excellent hotel and spoil the anticipation of future guests already booked and put off new bookings.
We have been here many times and this was the best ever. The staff are all working so hard to make everyone feel welcome, safe and valued. The rooms were kept spotlessly clean, so yes, some of the bathrooms need an upgrade but they work and are clean and spacious, who needs marble and gold taps in Barbados? They are strict about sanitising and mask wearing and that is why cases are so low, you will feel safer there than in the UK at the moment. We never saw a member of staff without a mask on, even the gardeners wore them and that must be so uncomfortable in the heat.
The food was excellent, best we have ever had. Lots of lovely fish including smoked salmon at breakfast. Drifters and Reflections were open for both lunch and dinner nearly every day and the cocktail bar is now open from early morning until evening serving coffee and pastries all day. Special mention to Raheem the best bartender ever.
There was music entertainment every evening until 10.30 so everything much as usual.
The worst thing about the holiday is the getting there and back home with all the rules, tests etc. We did our leaving test at LimeGrove medical centre, we paid 98US$ but understand that you can now get the test at home and take it with you. We had a problem down loading the result but now realise this was due to a poor WiFi signal so don’t panic just go up to reception (thank you to Shane who was so patient) and they will sort it out and print anything off that you need.
The staff are all working in incredibly difficult conditions, they are terrified that the visitors will stop coming and are trying their very best to please all guests new and returning but they won’t stand for rudeness or unreasonable demands. If you treat them with respect they will do their utmost to please. Special mention to
Dawna, Cathy, Steven, Lisa and chef Susan thank you for everything.
If anyone wants any more info feel free to direct message me.

Dear Pinkwitch, We felt great after reading your review to learn that after you read a few negative reviews, you still came to our hotel and we lived up to your expectations. You made special mention of the hard-working staff, entertainment and that you loved the clean rooms. We are guided by the Ministry of Health and our in-house commitment to clean guidelines, as we seek to provide a safe and clean environment for our staff and guests. We continually strive to improve our offerings to our clients and have done so by revising our opening hours for the Vista Coffee and Wine Bar to allow for early morning coffee prior to the start of breakfast. The staff mentioned like Shane, Dawna, Kathy, Steven, Lisa, Susan and Raheem felt really special at being mentioned as helpful. We have since started to upgrade our wifi to allow for faster and more efficient service to all. Thank you for your feedback on your stay, we can't wait to have you return once again. Warmest Regards Sophia Babb General Manager

Just returned from our 4th visit on the run to crystal cove & another fantastic family holiday great staff, (Kathy, crystal, Kevin, Robert, to name but a few) great food, great water sports, great location on the west coast strong tip use the local bus to get around friendly reliable service. what more could any family need. We will hopefully return again next year but we are a little concerned about the Marriott take over as we can only see the prices increasing with little investment. Hopefully they will take on board a little constructive criticism & invest a little on the beach sun loungers, & the gym & possibly a Harris hawk to patrol drifters as the situation with the pigeons has got worse year on year. we have all ways had a fantastic up to date room but listening to some of the other guests it does seem that some rooms have yet to be updated & are looking tired to say the least so that area seems to be pot luck. All in all tho we love crystal cove many happy family memories made here again
Oh & Sophia please get the Banks beer back on draft.

Dear db1975, It is always a pleasure to welcome you back to your home away from home. As always, we feel extremely happy when clients share their fantastic family experiences with the team. We shall certainly share your warm comments with Kathy, Crystal, Kevin and Robert in particular. We were happy that you still certainly enjoyed the great staff, location, water sports and created more great family memories once again. New beach equipment have already been ordered and should soon be with us. We are currently also addressing some of the gym equipment and the Drifters situation with the birds will be reviewed as we strive to improve our product to our valued customers. Through continued investment we shall certainly amend and improve where necessary to ensure that all are comfortable and satisfied. It was a decision to change to another draft beer and it has been well received by many but we can certainly continue to review our offerings as is always done. We certainly apologise for any inconvenience you may have experience as a result of such. We look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future. Warmest Regards Sophia Babb General Manager

Both my wife and I and our friends have just returned from this simply wonderful hotel. We read some of the negative reviews prior to travelling and all we can say is what planet were they on! This place oozes charm, the staff are so friendly ( I guess its the way you treat and talk to the staff that helps) we had nothing but wonderful interaction with them and they were so friendly, warm and polite. For once both my wife and I had no issues with Stomach bugs at all or any issues, the food was great.
Food:
The menus varied from day to day, buffets one day themed the next ( Jaimaican, Bayan, Italian etc). The dinners were served at the Drifters bar near the Beach, The Burgers are awesome as were the other buffet dishes, something the hotel cannot help with is the number of pigeons near to the bar! tip: so dont sit near to the beach.
Drink:
There was a large choice of cocktails and spirits on offer and the beer choice is either Carib or Deputy, the latter being brewed by Bank's.
Accomodation:
The rooms are cleaned every day and are adaquate, we satyed at 102 which was a bit tired in all honesty but we have been informed that next year all rooms will be refurbished by the new owners "marriot" other than that really nice.
Pools:
Pools were clean and refreshing, the pool bar is a must.
At this point we feel that some staff need a mention as they made our holiday that little bit special.
The diminutive Mya, a bundle of fun and always smiling shes great.
Andre, top barman, looks after you so much a great guy.
The wonderful Allison, such a warm and friendly person a credit to the hotel.
Curtis, always smiling and welcomes you with a warmth as hot as the Barbados sun, made our day start off well.
The incredibly warm and friendly Raheem this guy is on another level he too is a credit to the hotel, love him as a brother.
Jensel, a lovely warm freindly staff member again an asset to the hotel.
To sum up, if you treat the staff with kindness, politeness and warmth you will get it back in bucketfulls, if you get the chance go on the "Reggae Reggae" bus (yellow ones) the drivers are insane but what an experience. Speightown and Holetown are great to sample the real Barbados. Bus fares are $3.50 ( Barbadian $) approx £1.30 no matter where you go. The horses at Pebble beach were simply awesome to watch them bathe with their handlers.
Lastly, we strongly adivise you to book a sunset cruise on the catamaran with "Silver Moon" one of the highlights of our stay there, simply outstanding.
All in all a great holiday that will live with us for ever, any questions just ask and we will give you our honest answer.
Enjoy.

I have just returned after spending 2 weeks at this so called 4 star resort. First off I would say all the staff I came in contact with were excellent in attitude and smiley. Where for me this place falls down is the food. On all lunch occasions at the Drifters bar the selection was not much better than you would find in a works canteen. There is a grill where if you wanted burger, hotdog, fish and sometimes chicken this was ok but it gets very samey. Lunch in the Reflections restaurant was very limited and the quality was very poor. So that’s lunch, breakfast was ok usual fare eggs anyway you like, cereal, fruit, cold meats, toast etc. The main evening meal was slightly better than the canteen selection at lunch, in Reflections there was generally a choice of 3 starters soup 3 mains and a veggie. Desert was basically the same each day. The best evening meal of the week was Saturday evening when there was a Caribbean buffet in Drifters. We booked a suite and from reading other reviews and talking to other guests we were fortunate that we had a refurbished room, the bathroom was very nice jack and Jill sinks a large shower loads of hot water. What spoilt it was an aged aluminium patio door that was difficult to open and had a failed locking mechanism so there was a bar across one of the doors to prevent entry. Another gripe was (and I’ve seen on these reviews and it’s true) the sheets don’t fit the bed so during the night you are aware that the bottom sheet is all rucked up. I complained about this but nothing happened. If you like a swimming pool don’t stay here, 3 or 4 strokes and you have to turn round, basically what they have are 3 plunge pools.
I was told by very senior management that if there is a problem you only have to ask, but I didn’t come on holiday to keep asking why things are the way they are they shouldn’t be like it in the first place. This report makes me sound very hard to please and grumpy but wherever you holiday in the Caribbean it’s difficult not to make comparisons. Our last 4 Caribbean all inclusive holidays have been with Couples on Jamaica., and Crystal Cove can’t possibly match Couples Negril in all aspects. The killer is that Couples for the best room (beachfront suite) same premium economy flight same time of year Crystal Cove is £4K more. Barbados is supposed to be a premium island it’s safer than Jamaica but provided you leave your resort escorted you will be fine. I blame Virgin for this, they rate Crystal Cove 41/2 ticks and the online booking page says “premium dining” I asked the Virgin rep what does that mean and apparently a member of CC staff said it means branded drinks. Very misleading. Also absolutely nowhere in all the Virgin literature does it mention the hotel room tax. That was a bit of a surprise nearly 20 Barbadian dollars a night, I thought I had overpaid for this holiday and they want over another £100 from me.
Summing up it wasn’t worth what I paid and the quality of the holiday was very sadly lacking. Needless to say I shan’t be returning, to Barbados itself I’m not sure.

Dear Jollyboy1049, Thank you for your detailed feedback as it relates to your stay with us here at the Crystal Cove Hotel. We were happy to learn that your loved the staff who displayed excellent attitudes and were smiley. Your areas of concern mentioned will certainly be reviewed with the relevant departments, as we strive to improve our product and services to our valued customers. The Government of Barbados implemented a Room levy tax to the accommodation sector, inclusive of hotels and apartments. This levy was amended from the April 1st 2019, whereas the information was shared with our travel partners and is also listed in our literature in your welcome package given at the time of check in. We are truly sorry for having not met your expectations in some aspects of your holiday, and shall endeavor to rectify the concerns raised, as we always seek to find ways to always improve our product. Warmest Regards Sophia Babb General Manager

We chose this hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Overall I would say that this hotel was ok, just standard really and dated in places and for the money we paid we expected a bit of a wow factor - there just wasn’t any. It is not sophisticated or luxury or as their website claims and virgin holidays make them out to be. The staff however were very friendly.

We chose this hotel so we could have a choice of dining options, so we were very disappointed that there was not a choice of restaurants to eat in for dinner – Drifters restaurant was closed every evening. Was also shocked on one evening to be told that we couldn’t eat at 7pm when we wanted to as there was no tables free until 9pm? We were told we could only book in the morning for that evening’s dinner, yet it seemed other people were booking in for their whole stay. The food was ok – not fine food but was presented nicely at dinner. It was very hot in the restaurant and it could of done with more fans or a bit of air con. There is a problem in drifters bar with flies landing behind the bar on all the juices and drinks which others have mentioned, and I think getting a zapper machine could easily help reduce the fly numbers. I also didn’t like the bar staff using their fingers to put in lime/lemon in a glass – using a cocktail stick would be better!

Room furniture was chipped, and the Bathroom was very poor with mould and cracked tiles and the taps looked like they were falling off. The patio doors were so flimsy they did not look secure at all but the bed was really comfortable. I think there was staff or workman staying underneath our room chatting until the early hours of the morning and during the day lots of banging and drilling in the room below. We spoke to reception and asked if we could move rooms, there was no one on duty who could help us but she took our details and said someone would be in touch – nobody did.
First time I have been on holiday and had to wear ear plugs all week! We came back one day to find cables hanging through the ceiling – looks like they were installing a new wifi point which was just left in the room and the cables hanging down all week. Would have been a nice touch to have water replaced every day in the room. The fridge was empty.

The pools were nice and the beach area was lovely and we had no problems getting a sunbed with a useful shade attached and was great to get drinks delivered but we were never offered fruit or lollies as other guests have stated. Watersport offerings looked good. Was nice to walk to waves when the tide was out . Would recommend hiring a car and getting out to explore the Island. Would I return? Only if the rooms were modernised and the there was a definite choice of dining options!

Dear br0wnie99, Thank you for taking the time to complete a review on your recent stay at the Crystal Cove Hotel and for spending your anniversary with us, your holiday experience is very important to us. We were happy to learn that you loved the friendly staff, pools and beach. We always invite all arriving guests to attend hotel orientation the following morning to learn about the all-inclusive package available to them at Crystal Cove and our sister properties. All clients can book the restaurant one day in advance to gain they preferred times, popular times usually can get booked first. The meal times have an allotted amount to allow for comfortable seating and the delivery of efficient service. Health and Hygiene is very important to us and being in a tropical island we follow all health and safety guidelines and as required we have an external company come in and complete scheduled routine treatments. Our outlets currently have fly units in strategic areas to assist in eliminating flies but we will definitely look to install a few more. We are currently in the final stages of completing an upgrade of our wifi package and wish to apologise for any inconvenience you may have experienced during your stay as a result of such. Please accept sincere apologies for not meeting all of your expectations, however once again thank you for your suggestions as we seek to improve product and services to all. Our welcome was good and the team seemed very helpful. The effort the team made in these difficult Covid times is to be noted. Staff are mostly friendly and helpful. I think the service lacks consistency though as it can be great one day and not so good the next. Or differs from one team member to the other. Reception 3.5/5 service 3/5

Their Covid protocols seem fair with hand sanitiser available at various points through the property and the general requirement to wear masks. Tables at restaurants sanitised between guests.

The rooms are ok a bit tired and dated. The views are lovely however it can get a bit noisy at night with the room being so close to the live entertainment and the part of the beach where most people hang out. I hated having smokers just as we walked out. Room 3.5/5

Room service inconsistent one day room got cleaned early and days I had to ask for it to be cleaned past 5 pm. Room service 3/5

Food is not great mostly processed, fish overcooked, burgers pre cooked then thrown on the grill to warm, wine awful, most juices from cartons most fizzy drinks from plastic bottles even the lime juice is fake. Food 3/5

The gym is basic but clean. My only bug bear is that I had booked to be in at 6 am every morning but most mornings had to wait for someone to open it cutting my gym slot by up to 10 mins (considering bookings are on hourly basis). Gym 4/5

The beach looks beautiful but I wish they took the environment seriously and tidied up occasionally. Whilst I get that the pebbles etc cannot be helped the ice lolly sticks, plastic cups, cigarette butts and cocktail sticks could be cleared up! I feel like the beach is neglected. The loungers dirty. Beach 3/5

I particularly enjoyed hanging out at Vista coffee bar with Roshida. Always smiling and happy to help. Vista 4/5

Whilst I don’t think I’d return to this particular property. Barbados is gorgeous and it’s hard not to have a good time here too. **Biggest plus point** the wifi is great even on the beach***

Dear Leylahni, Thank you for completing a review on your recent stay at the hotel. The hotel is guided by The Ministry of Health and The Covid Unit as it relates to maintaining cleanliness as required in our new ways of cleaning guidelines and the covid protocols. We currently have our guest rooms on a care maintenance program and are working with our teams to work on our final scheduled refurbishment plans. The areas of concern which you have mentioned in your review were shared with the team, and measures implemented as we aim to improve the affected areas and our service standards. Vista Coffee & Wine Bar is truly an intimate location to enjoy a beverage and great company. Barbados stands ready to welcome you back to our beautiful shores. It’s almost 5 years to the day since we last visited Barbados and oh how things have changed, before I go into the hotel details I will tell you a bit about the hassle getting in, apart from filling in all the online forms, arranging PCR tests, when you arrive you are herded up in a very small, very hot (No A/C) waiting room to be “vetted’ so they can decide which wrist band you get depending on vaccinations status, then you are moved to a seated area while you await your turn for a PCR test before being able to enter the country. Once in you must keep your wrist band on until you receive the all clear, around 18 hours later.
Moving on to Crystal Cove and the hotel its self, as with all hotels in Barbados its tired and in need of refurbishment, that doesn’t mean however its not clean or comfortable, the reception is small and open. This leads down stairs to the main dinning area, hotel rooms and pools. The dinning area again is partly open but was very stuffy where the food is served. This took time both at breakfast and dinner as there seems to be a lack of serving staff. Likewise there was some queuing for tables. The Cave bar leading to and from the dinning room was very hot, made a lot worst by the fact you had to wear masks anywhere on the property. Our room 109 a garden view was on the ground floor, very clean and bright, the bed was comfortable and surprisingly for Barbados all the fixtures & fittings worked. The bathroom was in need of a make over, however the shower was good and all the usual toiletries were supplied on a daily basis. There was a kettle along with a good supply of tea and coffee, albeit we did need to leave a note to remind them to top it up. Pool towels were left each day in the room once it had been cleaned. There are 3 small pools the favourite being the one facing the beach, however trying to get a sun lounger was like rocking horse poo, all the old people are up at 6.00am putting towels out, so we spend most of the holiday on the beach, where there are plenty of loungers, though many were broken. The water taxi runs between the various elegant hotel group, so we would hop on this and head to colony club, but be aware this is not an all inclusive, so you do end up paying for food and drink, but the beach is so much cleaner and wider.
Due to Curfew all evening entertainment ended at 8.00pm, so the nights could be long, the cave bar remained open, but Drifters the better of the two closed at 5.30pm.
In all I would recommend this hotel, the foods not bad, a bit repetitive but with little else open outside you are a bit struck.
Free motorised water sports came with the all inclusive package.
Enjoyed our time there, will go again, once curfew lifted.

Dear Dubaidick, Thank you for returning to our lovely island Barbados and by extension, spending your holiday with us at Crystal Cove Hotel. We are always delighted when customers take the time, to make our hotel their first choice to have their holiday. Sorry to learn of your wait as it relates to being processed at the airport due to the Covid protocols for entering the island. This is all in an effort to keep you and the islanders safe. Thank you for your detailed comments as it relates to the property and the amenities offered during your stay with us. The areas of mention will be reviewed to improve our services and improve our customer care to our valued customers. Continued investment also to our product will continue as we always seek to improve our product. Although the island is still on a national curfew, we were able to make better changes to our operation. Hotels have been approved extended times, so our entertainment currently finishes at 10:00pm and our main bar closes at 11:00pm. We also hope to welcome you back when the curfew is lifted, so we can better meet your expectations.. Warmest Regards Sophia Babb General Manager

Stayed for 2 weeks from end September to early October 2021.

First for the positives:

1. Great location.
2. Great water sports that are included.
3. Good bar staff and some good restaurant staff.
4. "Sam the man" whe took us on a full island tour that made our holiday.

Now for the negatives:

1. This can only be described as a 2 star Hotel, nowhere close to a 4 star hotel that they claim to be!
2. Room leaked in the rain all over our bed. When I complained, management just said that they would send housekeeping to change the sheets, but of course, when it rained again, it leaked through the roof again. Housekeeping called again to change the bedding, leaving my wife and I to move the bed ourselves and to rearrange the room so it only leaked on the floor! No-one was interested in dealing with the issue or forthcoming to move us.
3. Management staff are shocking. When I called them RE the above and they said that they will send housekeeping I said to them so what room are you going to send housekeeping to? to which the Manager said I don't know, what room are you in??
4. Food is not what I would expect of a 4 star, but OK for the 2 star that it should be.
5. Shower was crap, leaked and flooded the bathroom floor.
6. Patio door was knackered and didn't lock, but as before, Management didn't care and never fixed it!
7. Sun loungers on beach are good but never cleaned, many are broken and have bird crap on them that is never cleaned up.
8. Glasses are left by pool side all night and not cleared up at the end of each night.
9. All beds are taken around the pool by 7am with towels left on them, but some people actually never use them! No-one manages this at all.
10. Some restaurant staff, many cleaners and generally all of the Management are rude and don't care.
11. Bearing in mind we are still in a Covid 19 pandemic, this hotel is not clean at all.
12. Take my advice, go to the Riviera Maya in Mexico for 2 weeks all inclusive in a truly 5 star resort and use the rest of what you save to go to somewhere like Spain for another 2 weeks as this resort is not worth what we paid for!!!

Dear hgh546, We were happy to learn that you liked the location, complimentary watersports activities offered, great bar and the restaurant staff. Sam is not an employee of our hotel, but I am glad that he was able to take you on a tour that made your holiday. We were truly sorry to learn of the leak in your room during your stay and that no offer was made to change rooms. I wished that I was made aware of the phone call made to the manager that responded to you in a negative way as this is certainly not acceptable, and does not speak to the usual service and courtesy extended to our valued clients. I can assure you that you didn't have the opportunity to meet my entire Management Team, but have ensured that we all implement immediate action. This comment is one that is alarming to hear, as we generally receive great praise to the team. Please accept our apology for the inconvenience experienced during your stay as it relates to the concerns raised. The maintenance concerns were shared with the Property Team as we strive to improve these areas falling below our usual standard. Re-training is ongoing as cleanliness and comfortable leisure time is our focus during these very trying times. We have enforced the measures in place to ensure that clients do not reserve loungers around the pool area, and have been satisfied thus far with the results. This system is ongoing as we seek to stop this practice from reoccurring. Signage has always been in place advising our inhouse clients of the policy of nor reserving chairs before 7.30AM. We are committed to our hotel standards in our new ways of cleaning, and we are also guided by the Ministry of Health as we seek to provide a safe and clean environment for our staff and guest alike. The use of chemicals from an international company to ensure sanitizing and disinfection around the property is carried out daily. Thank you for your feedback, as it always enables to keep improving in all areas. Warmest Regards Sophia Babb General Manger

Stayed at Crystal cove in September for 2 weeks, there is no way this resort is 4 star, during our stay we had to go to reception 4 times asking for shower gel which hadn’t been left by the maids, resulted in waiting 30-40 minutes for them to turn up with it, there where black hairs in the bath and on the bathroom floor when we arrived, and there supposed to do a deep clean because of covid, the room was never cleaned properly, the bar ran out of premium drinks 4 nights in a row, and when we questioned the bar staff we would get a sharp and rude reply, and no Carib beer one afternoon. Hardly any evening entertainment, the sun lounges are mostly broken with the sun canopy; and splattered with bird crap, the locals sit around a tree through the day and dump old bottles next to it, we walked to breakfast in the mornings past the swimming pools and there were stilll lots of glasses left around from the night before, some staff are very pleasant but others just cant be bothered with you, the rooms are very dated and need refurbished, we have stayed in a lot of 4 star hotels around the world and this is no where near a 4 star. If you are looking to travel to Barbados then my advice would be look for a different hotel, we understand that covid has changed the way we all holiday but there is still no excuse for bad service and rudeness and when you pay a premium price for you holiday you expect to get what’s been advertised

We stayed at this hotel for a week and whilst very nice I was not as nice as I would have expected.
The good points:
Sunbeds were plentiful and comfortable and had a sun canopy to shade the sun and also the rain (showers were frequent most days).
The food was very good.
Staff in reception were friendly and helpful.
The beach bar was a lovely location for lunch and dinner.
Large beach area.
You are able to use the facilities at the other hotels in the Elegant Group.
Free watersports including waterskiing.
Ice lollies given out each day on the beach.
The bad points:
Not enough staff which created a poor service all round.
Dinner reservations needed to be made due to Covid but this limited the available times and if you didn't get up for breakfast early the slots were limited to 6.30 or after 9pm.
Rooms were looking very tired - we had problems with the shower and temperature regulation every day.
Evening entertainment was very average and some night non existent and there were not enough tables to accommodate the number of guests if there was a band/music playing in the evening.
No waiter service on the beach although there is a man that comes round periodically with a tray of drinks to choose from.
To sum this all up, we had a lovely relaxing break. Lack of staff created service issues like tables not being cleared as quickly as you would like, lunch orders one day having to be delayed as too many food orders were in the kitchen, queues to enter each meal servings.
We visited Oistins which was a bit disappointing due to covid restrictions, one band playing and no dancing or singing. Reggae reggae buses are a great way to get around and we used a couple of times feeling very safe. We had dinner at Waves (asian restaurant) and Turtlebeach (italian) - would recommend them both for dinner one evening but book when you first arrive as they get very busy with reservations. Definitely do the swim with turtles boat trip that you can book through the watersports people directly as cheaper than the hotel direct and take advantage of all the free watersports bookable every day. The entertainment was very low key, would not recommend this hotel for young couples who want to party. The airport on the way home was chaotic and would recommend to spend the money if you can on a fast track through the airport on the way home. Flying out was no problem at all.

I can't confirm the timing of the restoration. We were told in September that it would be Jun/July time. So please check. I have stayed at the Turtle Beach and it is a far bigger site and does favour family's with kids. But the location is good and you can walk to Lawrence Gap etc as well. Crystal Cove is more Boutique style and very close to the best restaurant on the Island.

Nice beach with soft sand , however, when we were there it was red flagged nearly every day and on a two week holiday only managed to go water skiing once. The beach was too rocky to wade in and therefore we couldn’t swim the entire holiday, either as the sea was too rough and was bringing up far too many stones. You might be luckier with a calmer sea .

If the hotel isn’t being refurbished don’t bother because it needs it desperately. And if it’s being refurbished don’t go either.
