I stayed at Mangawhai Heads Holiday Park during the 4-week Covid19 Lockdown period. To that time everybody was nervous about the situation.
With my stay at the camping my mind changed from being scared to feeling home, feeling safe and feeling well protected. It's all about the owners familiy who took so much care about us. They provided us with everything what we needed from outside. So we could stay in our lockdown bubble very safely. Richard, Noela, Hayley, Eugene and their kids are the best hosts you can imagine. At the end it was very hard to leave, because i really felt home.
The camping is situated in one of the best natural spots in whole new zealand. There is lots to do around, you can swim in the tidal affected river without waves or in the sea with nice waves. You can kayak the river i.e. to a huge sanddune and climb that. You can surf the waves at the sea, there is also a surf school. Lots of possibilities for hiking and bicycling.
The aminities with toilets, warm showers, indoor kitchen and outdoor barbeque are new, well working and spotless clean. The warm showers are operated with 1$ and are the best showers which i ecperienced in NZ and AUS, they are big, enough water, good pressure, you can exactly adjust the temperature between cold and really hot. Neighbouring shower guest does not affect the temperature setting which is awesome.
The camping lots are spacey, flat and grassed, auitable for all kinds of camper or tent.
I really can recommend to stay at this place and enjoy the hospitality of all the staff.

Thankyou for choosing to stay with us as part of our lockdown family in what started as a very stressful time for everyone, including us. We appreciate how accepting you were of our terms to stay here, that once you were in, you were unable to go anywhere apart from the beach, too keep your distance from people and adhere to strict hygiene requirements. We would do all your shopping and try and procure anything else you required. We know how hard this was in terms of limiting your freedom, however you fitted in well and know you left here with much sadness at the good time had with your lockdown family. We hope you are safe and well at home and look forward to the next time we may meet.

We arrived here just as the NZ Covid-19 lockdown was announced, we had 24hrs to decide whether to stay or move to somewhere else before the lockdown took effect. We decided to stay, one of the very best decisions we've made in our lives. The owners were very welcoming and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and safe. Once we got over the initial shock we realised that we were staying in a beautiful location right on the edge of the estuary with views out to sea. Taking care to keep our distance we could walk along the estuary beach or up a road to a wonderful coastal beach with great waves. The site has two locations, we were on the northern site, the facilities were excellent including a very new toilet/shower block with excellent showers, well equipped communal kitchen with outdoor seating area and BBQs. The campground is largely flat and has a kids playground area. Thank you to our wonderful hosts Richard, Noela, Hayley, Eugene!!

It was a pleasure to have you stay in what was a very unsettling time for all. We loved how everyone just fitted in and accepted our terms and conditions in our endeavour to keep everyone safe. It was lovely to see all our lockdown families bonding in a safe way while enjoying each others company and camaraderie. We are pleased to hear you arrived home safe and are well. We look forward to when you are able to come back and continue your journey of our beautiful country. Keep safe and well.

Awesome place to camp, great facilities and friendly helpful staff. Showers are $1 for a 7min shower and kitchen use is free with electric cooktops. We did the Mangawhai heads cliff walk which had amazing views, highly recommend.

We stayed here for 9 days over the Xmas and New Year period, site was a good size and fitted our caravan nicely.
The facilities were very dated and it took the staff ages to get around to cleaning them, and when they did it was a mediocre job at best.
The onsite security, while being a great thing to have, need to be sent to a school for attitude adjustment as they were rude and tried to be overpowering, which didnt work on us I might add.
The staff in the office could do with some happy pills as well...
I wouldnt advise a long stay here but a couple of nights would be fine, we wont be going back to give them any more of our hard earned money thats for sure.

We stayed here on our final night of our post Covid camper getaway. What a great place. Fantastic facilities, new shower and toilet block, kitchen area etc. Our powered site (6) was right next to the toilet and shower block, so really convenient. The showers ($1 for 7 minutes) were bloody brilliant, although acurtain or shield between the shower and seating area would help to stop stuff getting wet. This would be the only bugbear of our stay. From checking in, which was easy as it was a breeze to stay here.

We stayed for a night with another couple in two campers. The location is magic by the sea in a quiet estuary front site.
The facilities and showers had just been upgraded and were the best we have had on on 8 day trip, showers were great and had a small charge. There is a lot of great places to see, visit and nearby food options

Most of the facilities are sites, either with power or unpower sites, though this HP also has a few cabin and room for family. The location is just perfect, next to the beautiful waterfront, very calming water in a kind of lagoon and not exposed to the open sea. Shared bathroom facilities are pristine clean, with one dollar coin for 7 minutes shower. Clean and modern shared kitchen with fridges and BBQ. however you need to bring your own kitchen stuff, no mug or plate as well as no spoon, fork and knife, and the outdoor dining tables with sea view. Just ideal if you happy with open spacious space, either with camper van or tents.
