Detailed Reviews
We stayed at Lochiel Estate for a night enroute to Rotorua. We had an absolutely pleasurable stay. Rooms were large and comfortable. View is amazing. Liz and Gary are superb with their warm welcome and hospitality. Breakfast is super delicious. Wish we could spend more times at the Estate. We will definitely be back and recommend this property to our friends.

We stayed at Lochiel Estate for 3 nights on our way to the Bay of Islands and points north. It is a perfect stopover place - about 150km from the airport, and the Mangawhai Heads area is particularly beautiful. We could have spent more time in this area.
Liz and Garry are great hosts and made us feel very much at home with the nightly wine tastings from their own estate. If it was warm enough we had wine and nibbles outside under the pergola. The wines themselves are very good and can be found in restaurants through the Northland and Bay of Islands areas. On one night Liz cooked us a great three course dinner, serving us and the other guests in their dining area in the main house. On the other nights they gave us good recommendations for restaurants in the area.
There are 3 rooms for travellers and a guest lounge which is well appointed. On one night when we were the only guests we joined them in their very spacious lounge. The bedrooms are very comfortable and have good storage. Large bags do however require some management in the bedrooms.
The vineyard and gardens at Lochiel Estate are kept in great condition by Garry. It is incredible to see how the property has been transformed in 15 years from dairy farm paddocks to a thriving vineyard and estate. The same can be said for other properties in the area. As a result the outlook from Lochiel Estate contains both fertile estates in close proximity and great mountain views in the distance.
The Mangawhai Heads area is an undiscovered gem - I think that other holidaymakers and locals were surprised that they had visitors from outside NZ in their area. It is a haven for traditional and very modern baches clustered around the river and beach. The beach itself is well worth visiting - nice waves and a very flat golden sand beach. In addition there are great walks in the area, particularly the headlands walk, which is well worth the effort - about 2.5 hours to complete. We also enjoyed golf, and the newly opened local museum.
I can thoroughly recommend Lochiel Estate as a great value and moderately priced accommodation alternative for a few days in the 'magical Mangawhai' area

We have visited this winery on a couple occasions and each time ens up buying a few bottles.
The owners are great with the tasting, nothing is an issue ans they are never in a rush. If you are looking for a great afternoon out this is for you

We only stayed one night, but Liz and Gary made us feel very much at home. A very attractive vineyard environment, not too far from Mangawhai. Comfortable accommodation with generous shared lounge. We didn't try the full meal/wine option, but Liz and Gary generously provided free tasting and a cheese plate at minimal cost. The breakfast was also excellent. Our only suggestion for improvement is minor only, just a little more reading material. We are looking forward to staying again, but next time with the full noise!

We've had the absolute pleasure of staying in Gary and Liz's B&B on their beautiful wine estate, Lochiel. The accommodation was comfortable, spacious and really tasteful - fantastic! Our children (aged 14 and 15) shared a room, with an en suite, whilst we enjoyed a lovely double room, with en suite. Gary and Liz made us feel right at home on our fist evening by introducing us to their delicious wines accompanied by gorgeous cheeses and crackers. Breakfasts were made to our specification with Liz going out of her way to ensure our individual requests were accomodated. Memorable! Thanks for your warmth, kind and generous hospitality. We'll be back

The experience Gary and Liz provide is beyond excellent, perfect being a more apt description. After the warm welcome, we felt straight at home, in a clean and comfortable room with great views of their idyllic setting. Liz provides a great array of beautifully scented bathroom amenities leaving us refreshed after journeying up the scenic route from Auckland.
Their large living and dining area is perfect for enjoying the beautiful home cooked meal that Liz created, of course paired with an array of beautiful wines and great conversation.
This is truly and experience to savour and we both hope we may return again soon.

Gary and Liz (plus furry friends) were truly amazing hosts. This beautiful Estate was an amazing venue our stay over the long weekend. I couldn't fault the service, people, or Estate.
Their fantastic wine and delicious food were only bested by the hosts five star service.
Would highly recommend to all!
We are already looking forward to the next opportunity to go back!

We had the pleasure of staying at Lochiel Estate with hosts Liz & Gary. The surroundings were beautiful, the accommodation was comfortable and our hosts were excellent. Not to mention the wine was lovely!
The Mangawhai area is picturesque and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend that little pocket of the world.
