Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have visited this winery on a couple occasions and each time ens up buying a few bottles. The owners are great with the tasting, nothing is an issue ans they are never in a rush. If you are looking for a great afternoon out this is for you

We stayed at Lochiel Estate for a night enroute to Rotorua. We had an absolutely pleasurable stay. Rooms were large and comfortable. View is amazing. Liz and Gary are superb with their warm welcome and hospitality. Breakfast is super delicious. Wish we could spend more times at the Estate. We will definitely be back and recommend this property to our friends.

The experience Gary and Liz provide is beyond excellent, perfect being a more apt description. After the warm welcome, we felt straight at home, in a clean and comfortable room with great views of their idyllic setting. Liz provides a great array of beautifully scented bathroom amenities leaving us refreshed after journeying up the scenic route from Auckland. Their large living and dining area is perfect for enjoying the beautiful home cooked meal that Liz created, of course paired with an array of beautiful wines and great conversation. This is truly and experience to savour and we both hope we may return again soon.

Gary and Liz (plus furry friends) were truly amazing hosts. This beautiful Estate was an amazing venue our stay over the long weekend. I couldn't fault the service, people, or Estate. Their fantastic wine and delicious food were only bested by the hosts five star service. Would highly recommend to all! We are already looking forward to the next opportunity to go back! Tom

We had the pleasure of staying at Lochiel Estate with hosts Liz & Gary. The surroundings were beautiful, the accommodation was comfortable and our hosts were excellent. Not to mention the wine was lovely! The Mangawhai area is picturesque and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend that little pocket of the world.

Lochiel Estate is a small boutique winemaker in Mangawhai Heads. You can read about the specific varietals, etc. by visiting their website, so I will not attempt to provide my version here. Wine tasting occurs in the owner’s large home that includes a B & B in a separate suite of 3 rooms. We wanted to stay in the B&B, but they were fully booked during our visit. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the B&B offering, but I have heard that it is very well received. My wife and I visited the winery in the late afternoon of a wonderfully sunny day in March. We didn’t know it initially, but we were greeted by Liz, one of the principal owners and the current matriarch of the Lochiel family. Liz had spent most of her day working in the vineyards as they are preparing for the current year’s harvest. Coincidentally, we were told by a local restauranteur that Liz is one of the hardest working vintners in the area. Liz could not have been more gracious. She took her time in explaining the tastes of each of the wines in the tasting and where the grapes are grown on the property. Grapes for all of the Lochiel Estate wines are grown on the property, handpicked, and vinified on the property. The only exception is a Chardonnay made by Liz’s son who grows the grapes in Marlborough and distributes the wine under a non-Lochiel Estate label. We mentioned to Liz that we did not have dinner reservations for the next evening. She immediately suggested The Cove restaurant in a nearby village. She picked up her phone and called the restaurant for us and made a booking. That is “above and beyond” service – remember, we were there for a tasting, not part of the B&B. As a postscript, we went to the restaurant and had a very good dinner – thank you Liz. During our stay in the area we ordered two Lochiel Estate wines, the Sauvignon Blanc and the Pinot Gris at separate dinners. Each of these wines were outstanding. While we had these wines at the tasting, they took on an additional special character when they were matched with food. Unfortunately, the Lochiel Estate wines are not distributed in the States, due to their limited quantities of production. Also, there are no immediate plans of dramatically increasing the production levels. Accordingly, the only opportunity to taste these wonderful wines is either at the winery, some of the local restaurants or purchasing a bottle at one of the local liquor/wine shops. There may be an opportunity to have an individual purchase shipped directly to the States, but we did not investigate that option. When you have the opportunity to enjoy one of the Lochiel Estate wines, please don’t pass it up. You will be very happy that you DID.

Wow - thank you so much Gregory - I really appreciate your lovely comments. I wish we could distribute to the States but unfortunately not possible because of our size. I am pleased you enjoyed The Cove restaurant - it is one of our favorite's. Just a small correction. The Chardonnay is grown and made on site on our property - it is the Invivo Sauvignon Blanc, our son Rob's wine that is grown and made in Marlborough It was lovely to meet you and we hope to see you back in NZ one day.

We stayed at Lochiel Estates for 3 nights and were treated to superb hospitality from hosts Gary and Liz Cameron. Looking over the vineyard to the surrounding rolling hills is a view you'll pack up and take with you wherever you go. The guest wing is well appointed with great showers. Breakfasts with home grown passion fruit on the side - who could ask for more! We can't speak highly enough of our stay.

Six of my family members stayed the night for a wedding at the vineyard next door. Wonderful accommodation with plenty of space and well appointed rooms, all with lovely ensuites. The beds were very comfortable to sleep in. The hosts Liz and Gary are friendly and easy to chat too. We had a gorgeous breakfast outside, overlooking the vineyards. So peaceful and just perfect. We would stay here again as nothing was a bother and take the time to soak up the atmosphere a bit more.

My partner and I just had an amazing stay at Lochiel Estate! Apart from the breathtaking views of the property the hosts Liz and Gary go out of their way to ensure you are well fed and drinking wine. If you can book in dinner with them one night as a treat. The produce used is all local, three courses and wine paired with all. Breakfast every morning is also a feast and great fuel for the hiking/wine tasting and beach going daily. The rooms are large, bathroom substantial and bed is very comfortable. Will be returning wth some friends as soon as we can.
