from the spacious two bedroom apartment with private wrap around veranda. Restaurants only a 10 minute walk but why go further? Grab a takeaway and enjoy with a couple of bottles of wine on your veranda. Clean and a warm welcome from your host, Jeanette. Well equipped and there is everything you need in your big apartment which has a separate living room/diner with a couple of sofas and a separate kitchen. There's a telly (who needs that in Aotearoa with the endless commercial breaks ruining a good drama!?) DVDs and a small library. There is an odd notice however that welcomes you to read the books but it's not a swap or to take away which renders the library somewhat otiose don't you think, bearing in mind the short stay most guests would have? Your big wrap around veranda is also well provided with comfortable chairs, tables and a comfy sofa. Dedicated on site parking. Communal bbq.

A ground old house with wrap around decks, all day sunshine and stunning sea views. We stayed in the Clipper room and there is another next door. Pretty central, a two minute walk to the small village and golf club and a few minutes by car to the various beaches ( Lang’s was our favourite) Our host pitched up on the first day with a full English breakfast, very rare nowadays and a real treat. Jeanette is a fountain of knowledge so listen to her advice as she points out the fabulous places to visit. Overall an excellent and peaceful couple of days - thank you. Enjoy......

The lodge has big estuary and sea views, so it is great to sit on the deck and see what is happening out there. Jeannette is very hospitable and we enjoyed chatting with her and other guests over a lovely cooked breakfast. The room was cosy and well equipped.

Let’s begin with the positives - a reasonable sized kitchen; you could prepare your own simple meals here. Good wifi; no air conditioning but lots of fans. Plenty of mirrors, and a single bed in the living space mean you could have a couple and a child stay in the unit. Quiet, parking right outside our unit. But definitely not what the label promised. Lovely photos of an old house with big balconies offering views - the views must be amazing but we never got to see them. We were assigned a two room unit downstairs at the back, adjacent to the carpark. Tired, a mishmash of bits and pieces, no attention to detail (for example, an old cushion and towel on top of the bookcase gathering dust), lots of “signs” and instructions stuck on the walls, fridge, even the bathroom mirror. A disability-access bathroom; a feeling of being in a retirement unit and definitely smelt like one. Not pleasant. We appeared to be the only ones staying; maybe they didn’t want to pay cleaners public holiday rates and so we got the only room that hadn’t been let out over the long weekend? No ability to even go upstairs and sit on the balcony. The location wasn’t good either. Cannot easily walk to the beach, it’s about a 10 minute walk along the main road to the small collection of shops, but definitely a drive to the cafes, chocolate factory etc at Mangawhai Heads. Most expensive accommodation of our holiday and the least impressive. Fortunately the rest of the trip went very well and this was the only poor accommodation.

HI Michelle, I'm sorry we didn't meet your expectations. We were full over this period and we only have 4 rooms each offers something a little different. I understand that you were disappointed you didn't have a sea view. We have spoken to booking.com and looked at ways we can furnish guests with clearer information to avoid future disappointment. We have styled the Par 3 apartment on a shabby chic french look. We tend to store extra cushions and a throw on top of the bookcase. We apologise if you found the cleanliness an issue - we pride ourselves on a high standard here so Im not sure what went wrong, but the Apartment had been cleaned. A citrus cleaner had been used by our new cleaner which we try not to use at times of high humidity as it can be misinterpreted and a urine like smell and I understand your concern.. kind regards Jeannette Mangawhai lodge

Very comfortable room with a lovely balcony and a gorgeous view. The common room, with its lovely furnishings, useful information and wrap-around verandah, was spectacular. Breakfast with that view was a delight. Jeannette was lovely, a real pleasure to sit and talk with. Having retired from her nursing work now, after 27 years running The Lodge, she is looking forward to a well-deserved rest, and has decided to put the place on the market, hopefully to be sold to someone who will continue the tradition as a going concern.

We stayed one night here and enjoyed the lovely views and quietude. Jeannette went out of her way to make us feel welcome and fixed a gluten free breakfast for me. Not far out of Auckland and some good places to eat in village as well.

Would have given 5 stars if I’d been given the room I’d actually booked 7 months previously. Not very good, husband remarked to owner but he said room given was OK. Would have thought when booked so long before should have been given correct room. Good breakfast, great view.

Only managed to get 1 night stay at the lodge. Much needed time for myself. From making the booking, to being greeted with a warm smile, to a room that had everything I needed (view to die for), to a beautiful brekkie. 5* all the way! Thank you for making the experience a special one. I will be back :)

This place is a giant house sperated into different bedrooms and apartments. Jeanette the host was really pleasant and friendly and gave us privacy when needed and she was easily accessible when needed. Breakfast is served in the communal lounge area and was lovely on a daily basis and I was always informed of what was happening on the local scene each morning (Continental or Cooked).
The views are spectacular from the top deck BnB rooms. The corner Beach Comber room also has an in-room bathroom, which is handy, where as the other BnB rooms bathroom is acrosss the hall - usage is restricted to that room though. There is also heaps of shared sitting areas inside and out for the BnB rooms along with their own balcony. There is a bbq for use under the main house if required, not quite the one pictured in their images. I diidn't use this though.
Worth noting each balcony area is seperated by plants only so you are not entirely private and can visibly see and hear your neighbours. It suits quiet catch ups rather than loud gatherings.
In terms of location it suits a variety of needs - There are two cafes within 5min walking, Mangawhai Heads shops in 10min walk and if you're a festival attendee the Northern Bass bus stop is 2min walk up a short hill by the Info Centre. There is also stepped walkway down to the beach front at the end of Heather Street which is about 7min walk. The Mangawhai town centre is a 7min drive, probably a 30min brisk walk.
Definitely looking this place up next time I am in the area
