Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Tokomaru Bay on New Zealand's East Cape has a long sandy beach. Our accommodation was right in front of it. What a view. Waves breaking over distant rocks and the tide going out and in as we lazed.
Our almost new generously sized unit slept two upstairs and two at the living level.
The Tavern restaurant is sensibly priced for its clientele of families and accommodation guests if you do not want to fend for yourselves. The restaurant is only a few under-cover steps (or wheelchair ride) away from the accommodation units. The bar is at the far side of the Tavern and its laughter does not intrude to the accommodation.
Each accommodation unit has a furnished good sized balcony deck facing the beach and the sea.
Do you want sun and to get away from it all? This is the place, and yet it has internet to keep you in touch.

We stayed over in our camper van for a night at Te Puka Taven, had a drink and dinner on a most beautiful beach, quiet and very relaxing after a few days traveling. The prices were very reasonable and the host was very friendly. The host sanitized all the tables after each use.
This makes for a definite recommendation for anyone passing by on the east coast.

Two night stay in Tokomaru at Te Puka Tavern.

Without fail, EVERYONE in town and at the pub have been polite, helpful and, well, plain friendly. They all deserve a pat on the back.

Some easy walks, a couple of harder ones, cool art, monster ice creams, offers of crayfish from chatting to a couple of locals returning from fishing (thanks to the guy in the house at the end of town), interesting local history. Your holiday can be what you make of it...

Small towns do it harder than larger communities at the best of times and for a population of a few hundred people these lovely people have done well. The new units where we stayed are nice and clean and we had a gobsmacking view from first thing in the morning and throughout the day.

A few reviews of their stay here have been a little harsh. I accept some things may not have been OK for some guests but generally a polite word will address most concerns. You cannot blame the town or hotel for the noise of the sea over the road or state of the beach after a bit of rain... Mind-boggling that some have!

This business is for sale and unfortunately it felt like it was being wound down. We'd been advised by a local that the kitchen closed at 7 pm (even though the sign on the door says 8.30). We arrived just after 6.30 and at 7 pm everything was being packed up, lights off. The fish and chips were tasty enough, but I'd specified no onion and my salad came with large chunks of raw onion all through it. Gorgeous setting but we'd have been better to buy fish and chips at the local takeaway and eat it on the beachfront at our leisure.

We camped here enroute to Gisborne. The views are fabulous even though the wind was at times, a little harsh. The staff and the locals are friendly and helpful. Food is pub grub and reliable - fresh and good value. Wine choice is very limited but beer selection very broad. Boat ramp with sandy beach is just opposite so plenty of opportunities for swimming and fishing. Dog friendly and a truly relaxing atmosphere.

We booked one of the newly renovated motel units attached to the Te Puka Tavern. It was awesome. Friendly checkin and evening meal at the Tavern. Beach side location - very clean with everything you could want. We loved it - recommended it to others already and will go back.

Very quiet location right on the coast overlooking the bay a bit outside the village centre. Very friendly owner and staff. Comfortable, spacious and quite well equipped room though Wi-Fi was not reliable. Staff offered to do laundry for us even though it is not normally part of the service. Bar and restaurant on site were quite good.

Recently 4 of us went for a ride up the coast past Gisborne. We booked in for a night at the Te Puka Tavern overlooking the glorious Tokomaru Bay. First we enjoyed a friendly casual drink with locals and then we went to our accomodation. The unit was sparkling clean and well appointed with a kitchenette. There was a million dollar view over the bay. We thoroughly enjoyed our night at Te Puka before continuing on up the coast. Thankyou to our hosts at Te Puka and to the staff for beautiful presentation.

We stopped by here for dinner last week.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The burger was delicious and the fish I had was so fresh.
Price was reasonable too.
You can eat outside looking at the sea.
I can recommend the Te Puka tavern.
Just drive along the waterfront and the tavern is near the end, you cant miss it.

Our group of 10 stayed overnight in 3 of the 4 units. Modern units, on the small side but everything supplied. Quite steep steps up to the main bedroom. Beautiful ocean view from the deck. Comfortable beds.
Great meals in the hotel attached to the units
