Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Absolutely first rate. Lots of thought gone in to getting things right - for example, hooks near the shower for towels etc. These are the little things that the big boys often forget!
Its not the Hilton and it's not central London, so for its location and price, it's the equivalent of those. Very good wifi. An excellent base for doing a detailed exploration of the Catlins.

Our unit was surprisingly spacious. The kitchen area has been superbly designed. Most motels seem to have all cupboards below bench level making bending double necessary to find crockery. This motel has some wonderful above bench cupboards and adequate bench space too which is a real bonus if you are preparing your own meals! In wet weather, the undercover parking at the back door of the unit was much appreciated. Your vehicle won't block the view - there is also a front door with a view onto a quiet street. Location is perfect, just off the main highway so no noisy passing traffic. I appreciated the personal friendly welcome on checking in, and also the lack of form-filling-in that can be tiresome.

Room Tip: Unit 3 was excellent, though I suspect all units will be exactly the same.

This motel is located just off the main road on a quiet street. The unit was spacious and we'll equipped. A couple of nice features were the covered parking in front óf the door and lots of hooks and hangers for your things. The bathroom was a good size but the shower was a little weak unless you set the temp quite high
Tess the woman who runs it is very nice and helpful.

Our one-bedroom unit was spotlessly clean and well equipped for our three-night stay. Nobody at reception on our arrival, but a noticeboard advised us which unit was ours (key in the door). We made use of the communal laundry facilities ($2 coin to use machine; provide your own laundry detergent). Dryer available for $4. We found Owaka to be a good location from which to explore The Catlins. Spoke to our host on the telephone a couple of times, but didn’t actually meet her. As our card details were taken on booking, we simply dropped the key in the key box on departure.

Would thoroughly recommend eating at The Lumberjack Bar & Café which served excellent food. Be sure to make a reservation, especially for dinner. Great coffee at Tahatika Coffee Traders.

Everything’s within easy walking distance of the motel.

We stayed just one night here, and found the accommodation very roomy and comfortable. There is a lounge area with a full kitchen, a separate bedroom, and then a bathroom plus a separate toilet.
The lady who met us at reception was terrific - full of information on the local area and great suggestions on what were the best sights and how to prioritise and fit everything in.

We really enjoyed our stay here as there was lots of space, it was very well equipped and a good location to visit The Caitlins. The studio even had a small dishwasher which we were very grateful for. The place was lovely and clean
, even if a few bits were slightly dated. There was a lovely little deck out the front to sit on and the owner was very friendly. Would recommend to anyone wanting to visit The Caitlins.

The Catlins Area Motel was old style but comfortable and located in a side street, very quiet. It had BBQ and laundry facilities, clean and just OK and suitable for an overnight stay in Owaka. A recommended place to stay in Owaka.

Very solid accommodation. We had a car, liked having a space right out front. We were driving from Queenstown all the way to Dunedin, driving the entire Scenic Southern Route, and this was out penultimate night. The host was super friendly, smiling, and helpful. We went to the local supermarket, which had a decent amount of choice. We did some cooking, nothing too fancy, but the kitchen was equipped enough for some simple cooking. Room was spacious and we liked having the back door to sit outside. Not brand new but everything worked and was well kept.
Quiet and clean, and fairly priced. Would stay here again on our next Southern Route visit!

Well appointed clean units with plenty of room. Great heating and with a friendly hostess with great local knowledge. Units have the benefit of having your car under cover immediately outside which is great. Definitely would stay again.

We had a memorable and super comfortable stay here. The motel is conveniently located within a short drive to attractions. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The entire unit was very clean, bright, airy and equipped with everything we needed for our 3 night stay. Despite the pictures, it is located on a very quiet side street. The grounds are well kept and looked after. We can wholeheartedly recommend this accommodation!
