Detailed Reviews
We stayed at Pensao das Dunas for several days and use it as a base as we walked some of routes around Carrapateira and along the Rota Vincentina. Our hosts were friendly and helpful, assisting us with route planning, taxi pick-ups and local info. We enjoyed the lovely, generous breakfasts, with good coffee, and appreciated being able to make lunches for our walks, for a small fee. The showers were great, hot and lots of pressure, especially after a long walk. The location is perfect for those walking the Rota Vincentina as it is close to the trail, easy to find and very close to the village of Carrapateira for groceries, bars and restaurants. The kitchen in our apartment was well-equipped for those wanting to self-cater and the garden would be a great place to relax in summer.

In April 2022 we spent three nights at Pensao das Dunas and it was one of the highlights of our month in Portugal! The pensao is a charming and comfortable repurposed building with a beautiful garden in a private setting five minutes walk from the old town in Carrapateira. A delicious breakfast is available for a small fee and it was the best breakfast we had in a month! Along with all of the regular breakfast foods, farm fresh eggs were cooked to order and fresh bread was also available. The common room where guests can enjoy an outstanding library was a bonus, as was a laundry service that is so important for hikers on the Fisherman's Trail. Carrapateira is a lovely little village with a beautiful beach, good restaurants, and many day hiking options. Our hosts were so helpful, friendly and interested to provide excellent service. It was truly, one of the gems we discovered on our hike on the Fisherman's Trail and we were so glad to have spent three nights there to experience this singularly beautiful part of southern Portugal. Thanks to Agnes and Ruben for your hospitality!

Excellent accommodation, friendly staff and superb breakfast.
Rooms and apartments are decorated colorfully and are clean and welcoming.
If they have time they even do your laundry!
The location in the village just behind the dunes is wonderful, their garden is secluded and beautiful, with enough space for everybody to relax, have a drink( excellent wines available) read a book or have a friendly chat with other guests.
And if you want to use the BBQ facilities you’re quite welcome to do so.
Also wonderful surroundings for walking, visiting the most beautiful beaches, taking surfing lessons or having diner in some very good restaurants

This is a warm pensao with a welcoming approach, with rooms that a somewhat basic and a tiny toilet. The redeeming features are an open lounging area and a decent breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice. It is centrally located within walking distance of the beach. Don't expect luxury and you won't be disappointed.

Stayed here for 2 nights while hiking the Fishermans Trail in 2019. The room itself is basic and quite small but if you have been hiking 20+kms per day who cares! The breakfast was outstanding and one that I will remember as being up there in terms of quality and just good freshness. The family vibe is lovely and relaxing and nice to enjoy a beer in the nice shaded outdoor area. We got our washing done here which was a relief as we were nearing the end of our 140km hike.

We really enjoyed our short 2 night ‘staycation’ here … a double room with en-suite bathroom… we were exploring from our home in Vilamoura. The pensao is fairly basic but the rooms are clean and tidy, the beds pretty comfy, super shower and lovely breakfasts with freshly squeezed juice and homemade yogurt, plus a choice of cereals, fruit, meats, cheeses and cakes / pastries. We also had an evening meal which was also lovely (squid cataplana and two types of lasagne). WiFi was pretty good, no air con, lovely terrace garden.

I stayed in Pensao das Dunas for the 2nd time this September (2014) and my only wish is that I could have stayed longer!! Eduardo the owner is one of the kindest and nicest people I've had the fortune to meet and, apart from knowing how to run a guest house, he truly goes above and beyond to make his guests' stay perfect - telling me how to get to the best spot on the dunes to watch the sunset (which is simply spectacular) and even helping me out with transport!! The hotel is situated right next to the dunes of Carrapateira which are a fantastic place to go walking, relax or explore a beautiful and unique wild environment, without hordes of people. There is quite a diversity of landscapes to explore too, as right next to the dunes there is the river which opens to the sea, so you have dunes, river's edge, sandy beach and The surfing beach 10 minutes drive or half an hour's walk away is also lovely, as is the small town itself. The hotel itself is spotlessly clean, with wonderful, colourful and cosy decor and arranged to make you feel immediately at home. The courtyard area, sunny but sprinkled with shady palms, flowers, tables, chairs and sunbeds, is a gorgeous place to relax both in the day and in the evening (though at 11pm sharp guests are asked to retire to their own rooms so as not to disturb others). The legendary breakfasts deserve their reputation - everything you could possibly think of eating in the morning (apart from a greasy English fry-up that is) - a huge variety of meats, cheeses, eggs, different breads, fruits, honey, nuts, jams, yogurts, juices - and everything in abundance!! This is the kind of breakfast that really sets you up properly for a day of surfing, cycling, climbing, walking or whatever your outdoor activity of choice. This place gets booked up 6 months in advance- so if you do get the opportunity to stay here, take it!!! THANK YOU Eduardo for running such a wonderful home away from home for me and countless other travellers!! I'll be back for sure.....

I was lucky enough to hear about this place when I was stuck for accommodation in Carrapateira this September. The owners did their best to get me a room even though it was already almost full. I stayed 3 nights and they were easily the highlight of my 2 week trip.
It’s not The Ritz when it comes to rooms (simple and plain - high season expect E45 per room with shared bathroom) but it surpasses The Ritz when it comes to hospitality. (I stayed in a few 5* around the world so I can verify this!) The owners (Eduardo and Victor) are very hands on running the place and they were always around to offer info/bikes etc. Victor cooks dinner for guests most nights ( I paid E10 including wine... and unbeatable conversation!) and if you're lucky, Eduardo will very likely whisk you off on an adventure trek on the cliffs to discover some new beaches. I did a 15km trek on my last day (amazingly there was no charge for this) and I still can’t believe the heights we climbed -120 meters above sea level I think...
Even though I only stayed 3 nights here, I actually felt kind of emotional leaving. Carrapateira is a special area but as someone said to me recently, it’s the people who really make a place special. I found staying at Pensao das Dunas a unique, positive experience because of the amazing people both working and staying there. Enjoy.

My partner and I stayed for two days in Pensao das Dunas, to relax a little from the tent we were using in this trip. The Dunas, is not bad for this pourpose, even if the walls were very thin, so you hear everything from next room. The staff were not specially kind. We expected something more from it.
