Paul was very easy to deal with during the booking process. Talked to him a few times during my stay about places he would recommend to eat (Michele's - it was very good fresh fish and local cuisine), and when I was going on a tour that didn't turn up (separate story that was totally my fault) he arranged a ride to the place I wanted to visit. It was so thoughtful as he could see my disappointment at missing the tour.

Really liked the no hassle $10 (for each way) airport pickup and drop of was a bargain as I didn't want to deal with taxis or taking the bus.

MY single room was perfect as I'm a light sleeper and I can't sleep around snorers. The sheets and pillows were clean. I liked how there was a mosquito net on the window. Very convenient - I never got bitten in my room. People come every day to clean and they did a good job. Felt bad for them as not everyone cleaned their dishes, and they washed and put away all dishes left in sink every day. Common areas swept and mopped every day.

Kitchen is well stocked and there are 2 sets of oven hobs. Really convenient when the place was full and everyone wanted to make dinner at the same time.

Location is very good. Beluga cafe next door, ice cream and marine centre 2 min walk, convenience store 5 min walk, fish and chips 3 minute walk.

Beach right in front of bungalows. Hammocks were clean and very very relaxing.

Highly recommend, I've been telling everyone to stay here. People I met on the trip didn't know there were backpackers on Rarotonga. But hopefully next time, they will stay here.

This place is perfect. The beachside rooms have some of the nicest views on the island. The facilities are clean and welcoming. The type of people who stay here seem to be likeminded, friendly, quiet and exploring this incredible group of islands. Paul is super helpful and kind. I highly recommend this place and I hope to be back.

We were upgraded to the self contained beach front unit from the hut and they view was amazing! We sat on our deck of the hammocks down stairs and watched the dogs playing and swimming all day long. Is in need of an update and the pool was being worked on while we were there but the beach was closer to us. Nights were hot as only had a ceiling fan but had a mosquito door screen which helped a little. Only stayed two nights, but even with a slightly uncomfortable bed, we would have stayed a lot longer as the view and beach access with sunset was amazing!

I really enjoyed my stay at Rarotonga Backpackers! I stayed for over a week. Paul is very lovely and helpful. It was very safe and in a great location. I loved having the beach right on property and access to lots of shade. I stayed in the single room which was basic, but had a fan and I had everything I needed. There was filtered water in the kitchen which was nice. Again, simple basic accommodation, but really good value and would stay again in a heartbeat! Not a party hostel - at least when I was there - and I was happy for that! Lovely atmosphere with the rest of the guests. Well stocked kitchen.

If you’re looking for an affordable place this is the place to stay. However, you have to bite the bullet if you can’t handle the humidity and are okay with ceiling fans. I stayed in the shared dorms and they are like saunas. Again, you get what you pay for, so no complaints from me. The beach at the front of the property is beautiful but it is very rocky and currents seem a bit rougher due to the side of the island the accommodation is located on. I never swam onsite but always went to Muri or Aroa beach. Theft did take place in some of the beach huts, so be prepared to carry all your cash/passport with you everywhere. Overall, it was my first time in Raro - so just needed to get a feel for the place.

Situated 30 mins from the Airport (transfers available for $10 pp) , on a circular bus route ( $30 for 10 journeys), and on the beach. Rooms are a mix of beach huts, double ensuite rooms, single rooms with shared bathrooms and dorms. The owner is on site for 2 hours every morning, and available out of hours a phone call away. You can rent snorkelling equipment, cars and bikes. Internet available but expensive. Washing machine available for $4, which doesn't rinse. Room was shabby, but spacious with comfortable bed and a decent shower. Fly screen broken so you get mosquitos in the room. Kitchen was dirty with droppings all over the place, with no decent knives and not well stocked. Freezer grubby. No comfortable furniture outside and very grubby. Pool was ok but again no furniture. The beach is nice with amazing sunsets and teeming with life and coral a bit further down. Overall average value, and the place is unloved (it could be fantastic)

We came to stay here (hillside site) at the end of our RTW trip. Unfortunately, we were victims (plus 3 other backpackers) of a burglary and our room was turned over and our locked backpack was cut open to steal a large amount of cash. This occurred during early evening. After we reported this to the Police, we spoken to the owner, Paul, several times on the phone. We expected he would want to come out that night to the backpackers to show some kind of support to those backpackers who had been robbed. Incredibly, none of the owners came out to us, not even during the whole of the next day. The next day, when we visited the other site (beachside site), Paul actually tried to ignore us, failing to acknowledge anything that had happened.

The uncaring attitude of the owners added to our misery of being robbed. We moved to alternative accommodation the next day (along with one of the other backpackers who’d been robbed) and we managed, to some extent, to enjoy our remaining days in Rarotonga.

We advise you not to stay here due to the poor security that exist here and the rotten attitude of the owners. There are much better alternative backpackers to stay on Rarotonga.

Room was small and very dirty! Dirty sheets, towels. I found bugs in my bed and I couldn't sleep. In bathroom when I opened the tap, water was coming out as a fountain. I tried to stop the leak but that doesn't work. Only good thing was the price for room- it's lower then you can find in other places, but it should be much lower because of all these problems. In next time I'll pay more and will find another place. Rarotonga Backpackers is by far the worst place I have ever visited.

We spent ten days at one of the Garden Bungalows - a few hundred yards along the road from the Rarotonga Backpackers - Beachside. The cabin had all the basics and was an inexpensive base with the bus passing a minute's walk way. There was also a shop with most things just a minute's walk away. The bungalows are a little isolated if you want to go out a lot and don't have transport - there is little in the way of anywhere to eat out within reasonable walking distance. But we found the buses reliable. The location of Rarotonga Backpackers - beachside is fantastic - right on the beach and if we went back we'd probably rent one of the cabins there instead. The pool is a bit tired, but we used it often for a quick cool off, in between crashing the flash resort pool areas. In Rarotonga no-one seems to mind you using the pools at the big resorts - so long as you order the occasional beer or coffee or snack. The Rarotongan Resort pool was fantastic. A great way to holiday on a budget!!! Our only complaint about the bungalow we rented was the shocking TV reception. But we had a few DVDs with us - so we coped.
