I loved my stay at Aro’a Beachside Inn - from the late evening airport pickup and drop off right to my front door, the great layout of my villa including a separate area for suitcases and clothes hanging, excellent shower water pressure, well equipped kitchen, comfortable bed, good lighting, warm welcome from Steve and Geraldine at breakfast the next morning including Steve’s guide to activities, where to go & eat out, what to see etc, the bus stop right at the entrance, gorgeous Stephanie making pina coladas at the bar right on the beach, the stunning sunsets and of course Dexter, the resident golden retriever!

What a lovely spot this is. Right on the beach, sunsets at night and wonderful staff who really look after you.
We wanted somewhere to relax and unwind and this is the perfect place to do it.
Our room was very clean and had everything we needed. Serviced every day by the friendly staff.
Breakfast in the morning was just right with local fruits, a nice warm muffin and help yourself to toast and toppings - all on the beach or up at the Shipwreck Bar (don't miss omelettes on Sunday morning, something very different).
Loved how Steve explained everything we needed to know about the Aro'a Inn and also things to do on the island. His suggestions were very helpful, especially about watching the planes land which we did twice LOL. Steve is also an excellent singer who performed on the BBQ night when we were there but I believe he also does accompany artists on other nights.
We went to all the musical evenings and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful sunsets. You have to try one of the cocktails with are served in a glass jar which suits the shipwreck theme of the bar. You can't miss the BBQ night, the food is great and good social "get together".
All staff were happy to help you in what ever way they could with bookings for restaurants or shows or just with some further advice.
Steve and Geraldine even stood and waved goodbye as we left. A nice touch and a little thing but much appreciated.
We cant finish this review without also thanking Stephanie for all her help, support and humour. She is a real credit to the Inn and when Steve and Geraldine had to go away for a couple of days she looked after us all as if we were family. She is always smiling, makes you feel special and takes time to talk to you.
Thank you Steve, Geraldine, Stephanie and all the other staff for making our time on Rarotonga peaceful and relaxing. We will certainly stay with you again when we return.

Before I begin, I noticed someone was displeased with the smallness of the bathrooms. Yes, they are small. Yes, you have to close the door before you can get to the loo. More importantly, the water is plentiful and very hot, and who is going to sit on the loo with the door open!? It is clean, and the attention that the staff pay to cleaning is simply meticulous, whether bathroom, living room, bar, beach, or grounds.
The room was small, but very comfortable. The bed was comfortable too, and had I wished to cook, everything I needed was in the room's cupboards. Internet was rather... variable, but this is not the fault of the hotel in anyway, they are at the mercy of that wretched internet company just like everyone else. I also had a comfortable deck to lounge on when I wanted to, or I could sit near the bar and read, while looking up from time to time, out over the peaceful lagoon with crystal clear waters.
It is quite shallow at Aro'a - more suited for wading than swimming, but I am not a huge water fan, so wading suited me fine. I like tropical islands for their culture and experiences, rather than lying around on beaches.

Drinks are served in jam jars. This cute idea was inherited by Steve and Geraldine from the previous owners. It is certainly memorable, and measures - whether alcoholic or not - are very generous. My welcome cocktail was pretty strong - very generous again. And as always, it was delivered with a smile by the friendly Cook Island staff. The knick knacks are wonderful - number plates from US states, pirate and other nautical curios, hazard warning signs - it's a very original way to decorate a bar, and very memorable.

I remember having discussions with Steve about his previous life in corporate England - and the immense amount of travel that involved, and Geraldine's life as a schoolteacher. She told me a hilarious tale of a trip to Great Barrier Island that... well, it REALLY did not go as planned, and is probably a story the school concerned keeps in its archives to this day. Bad weather, bad food, getting rained out, it was a disaster end to end, but disasters always make the best stories, once the explosions cease and the smoke clears.
The roosters are noisy, as they are all over the Cook Islands. I suggested Steve catch and barbecue two of the beastly birds every Sunday.

Steve sings wonderfully - he loves the Eagles, and I threatened to make him sing ABBA instead (he hates them). He sings a wide range of other songs too, and his friend Anania plays the guitar beautifully, as does Steve.

I tried two other places on Rarotonga as I zapped in and out between the outer islands, and I am now really wishing I had just stayed at Aro'a.
Steve and Geraldine also look after their staff. I found this quite moving somehow... one evening I was the last guest left, and Steve and Geraldine were pouring their staff a jar of wine each, and I realised that this was their wind down time. So I quickly had my own jar refilled, and crept back to my room to leave them to it. I haven't seen anywhere else that looks after their staff that way, and I wish more did. The staff clearly adore their managers, and with being looked after as they are, I can see why. I'll stay at Aro'a again, when I am next on Rarotonga.

Kia Manuia Steve e Geraldine, meitaki ma'ata.

We stayed for 7-nights at the Aro'a Beachside Inn in Rarotonga at the end of our trip through Australia, New Zealand & the S Pacific (NZ$265/night, including breakfast). The inn, located on the SW end of the island, consisted of four 1-2 story buildings arranged around a nicely landscaped grassy area and facing the beach. There was no pool, but there were plenty of loungers in a semi-circular sandy area just above the beach and adjacent to the open-air bar.

Our room was in the building furthest from the beach but still had a partial view of the waves cascading over the fringing reef. One of the smallest in the inn, it was quite spacious with room for a queen bed & 1 side table, a small desk & chair & 2 lounge chairs, facing the all glass entry wall and the covered deck with a table & 2 chairs & another 2 comfortable lounge chairs. To the side of the room was an efficiency kitchen – sink & counter, small stove top, microwave and full refrigerator with freezer unit that, combined with the 2 Weber BBQ's by the bar, made home cooking a realistic option. The room had a good overhead fan & a wooden lock-box, but no AC – the windows were all screened, so the room kept quite cool during our stay. The bathroom at the back was large and had a spacious shower with plenty of water – the water was solar heated, but there was a power-assist switch for cool days (we did not need to use it during our stay). While the unit was quite old, it had been meticulously maintained, with no obvious scrapes or scuffs, and was cleaned spotlessly each day.

The beach in front of the inn was quite nice, although rocky once in the water – a definite need of water shoes (complementary, along with snorkeling equipment and kayaks). The lagoon, which extended 150 m out to the reef, was shallow especially at low tide. Purported to have the best snorkeling on the island (note that snorkeling was not especially good in the Cook Islands), it had reasonable fish abundance & diversity around the scattered coral heads (a lot of areas were impassable because the water was shallow) but visibility was not great – still, a nice diversion on a hot day.

The Inn's Shipwreck Bar was something a bit special. Rated by CNN as #3 of the world's top beachfront bars, its varnished furnishings and the knick-knacks left by scores of visitors exuded an eclectic, rustic & comfortable charm – and reasonable prices for the drinks and the basic pub food menu. Tuesdays and Thursdays featured live music, with Steve (the owner) singing & playing rythm guitar with island musicians – something that always attracted a good crowd. Continental breakfast, served at the bar, was very good – a large plate of fresh fruit, an oven fresh biscuit, toast, juice & limitless coffee.

Within walking distance, there were two well-stocked convenience stores as well as a couple of stands that sold fruit and coconuts. There was a bus stop in front of the inn (every 30 min in each direction), and we rented a car for a day from the nearby agency (they picked us up & dropped us at the hotel).

So, did the inn live up to our hope for a brilliant end to our 5-month trip? Yes, it did. While a bit basic, it had almost everything else going for it. Our room was comfortable, the location convenient, and the sunsets outstanding. But, most of all, it was the people. The owners, Steve & Geraldine, have created a very special vibe here – they and the staff were all relaxed and friendly (not to mention efficient) and made us feel like we were part of the family rather than paying guests. That, in turn, seemed to make all of the guests much more sociable than we have experience in most places. Friendly, comfortable, homey – very nice!

What a lovely place!
Absolutely everything we'd hoped for. The location was just magnificent. Our hosts - Steve, Geraldine, Anna, Stephanie and Alone - were as kind, fun, gracious and helpful as could be.
Sitting on the front deck, watching the pounding surf, was incomparable!
The 'Shipwreck' music and snacks - and a beer or two - rounded out perfection.
Stay there - you'll not be disappointed!

Our visit to Aro’a Beachside Inn is one we shall long remember. Idyllic, unrivaled. This resort exemplifies the true meaning of rest, relax and enjoy! From the breakfasts, which were free for guests, the Shipwreck Bar (one year voted as one of the top ten bars of the world) the sunsets, atmosphere, friendly staff, bus at the gate, bikes. Truly a paradise to escape the cold NZ winter. Loved swimming and watching the colourful fish. Free use of flippers, kayaks, goggles. While we were there, there were two women confined to wheelchairs, they managed to drag themselves down to the water and splash about. Brilliant experience without any formality.

Yes, clean comfortable rooms in excellent repair.
Yes, amazing location and views second to none.
Yes, awesome beach and snorkeling location
Yes, on-site pub style dining with really good food.
BUT Wait...that can be found elsewhere too!!.... what absolutely made the stay amazing were the hands on owners and their incredible assistants. From the onset of our stay to our day we had to say goodbye, Steve, Geraldine, Anna, Priest,Stephanie and Alone. They have to be the greatest hosts ever. We are a family of Canadians that can tell you honestly 'that' group of people MADE our visit so memorable. Don't think twice about staying at the Aro'a Beachside Inn

This was our second stay at this resort and first time since Steve & Geraldine took over. Suited us perfectly. We traveled with my elderly parents, who were well catered for. The beach is just divine, great swimming at all tides. The breakfasts were delicious and filling. Bar meals good value and great if feeling lazy and don't want to go out. Staff are awesome, every one of them friendly and helpful. Steve & Geraldine just lovely. Love the Shipwreck Bar and really enjoyed the live music. A small resort with a great atmosphere and enjoyed chatting with other guests at the bar. We stayed in beach side units which were very comfortable and just loved the deck and the views. All helped by a week of perfect weather. Wouldn't stay anywhere else.

There is a boat cruise down on Miri Brach that is really well done. But the best BY FAR. Is the Vaka Cruise on Aitutaki. The staff at the Aroa can help you set up either.

Kia Orana, Steve here, owner of the Aro'a Beachside Inn. We are constantly improving our property. This was the first ever comment that we had about pillows. We had ordered replacement pillows for all rooms (before this comment was made...) they should be here any day soon. As is often the case, guests leave comments on this public forum anonymous website. If people are not happy with something it is far better to say something at the time, then we can rectify any problems, if we don't know we can't do anything.
