The accommodation was perfect - the hosts so friendly. My sister and I were in the apartment downstairs - it was so clean and fresh and we each had our own bathroom. The outdoor space is so private and relaxing too. The closeness to the beach was a real plus - each day just walked the 100 metres to the beach to lie , snorkle and swim. So close to the scooter hire as well. Highly recommend

My partner and i greatly enjoyed our stay in the studio apartment at Aroa Kainga. It exceeded our expectations regarding the size ( spacious for a studio and had a large kitchen area) and how modern it is.

Nice private property with a lovely wee deck area right outside the sliding door to sit in sun or shade.

We had daily visits from the cute pumpkin (owners cat) though unfortunatly we also had daily visits from the roosters that hang around. Luckily you get used to them quickly.

Apart from the roosters the property is rather quiet and you can hear the waves crashing against the reef in the back ground.

The studio is in a great location, a minutes walk down a small lane to a great snorkelling spot (we got told many times that it has the best snorkling on the whole island) and a short 5 min walk to adventure cook islands to hire a scooter.

Tricia was great at looking after us, told us about things that was going on and things to do on the island. She was even up at 1am to greet us! She also made sure there was everything we needed, from extra beach towels and a bowl of fruit to hand soap and milk waiting in the fridge.

overall we both enjoyed our stay at aroa kainga and will definatly recommend it

Aroa Kainga was absolutely wonderful! We caught a very late flight in (2am) and Tricia was up to welcome us. We booked very late but Tricia managed to fit us in with 3 nights in the bungalow and 4 in the studio, and we were more than happy. Straight away I noticed how lovely and CLEAN the place was, I hate stray hairs and there was none in site! I can’t stress enough how CLEAN the place was. As other reviews mention Tricia is very helpful and has thought of everything, breakfast things for the first day and all cooking essentials, mosquito coils, fresh fruit (passion fruit vine out front recommended), snorkels, reef shoes, beach mats, sunhats, books etc. Everything was so personal.
The location is great; I think the best part of the island and beautiful beach for snorkelling. The Bus stops at the end of the road with very regular times but we hired scooters great fun. Muri beach isn’t far away which is lovely but a bit touristy and catches the prevailing wind, as soon as we came back to ‘our’ beach NO WIND and magic sunsets. It was lush. Spent most evenings watching the sun go down with a Mutatu beer and even saw whales just outside the reef! Very, very good restaurant nearby called Vaimas, so good we went twice and very reasonably priced for the quality.
A few things to note:
If you want to hire a scooter you need to get it first (to do the skills test) before you go to the police station to get your license and take your passport. We hired from Polynesian rental in town but they let us drop off at any office after hours.
If you want to do the cross island walk wear proper shoes, jandels don’t really cut it, can be a little bit scary with some shear drops but beautiful and well worth doing.
Yes there are roosters, and fires, and dogs but it wouldn’t be Rarotonga without them and you should not be put off.
Looking through the visitor books I only saw great comments and quite a few from people who have stayed more than once. Obviously they enjoyed the stay and so did we, we highly recommend it. Fantastic place!!!

Aroa Kainga Bungalows are tucked down a quiet lane, about a 2 minute walk to a marine reserve. They were a great place to base our holiday from as we were able to easily access the beach, bus and walks on the "back road". The bungalows are set in a lovely tropical garden and a special treat for us was to pick the lovely passionfruit, fresh from the vines each day. The bungalows are well furnished and the owner has gone to a lot of effort to provide everything you will need for your stay - reef shoes, snorkels, bbq, insect coils, deck loungers, all kitchen equipment, linen etc etc. There is even a safe for your valuables. A guest laundry is also available near the main house. Our host/s were very obliging and helpful, yet were unobtrusive. Even though this was a return trip to Raro, we still managed to find plenty to do. It was lovely to be able to get out and explore for a couple of hours and then return to relax in our quiet bungalow.

I would happily stay here again. Great location, close to a very nice beach - both for sitting on the sand, or snorkeling. The beach is a 5 minute walk from the property and I went swimming every day. This beach (bordering the Rarotongan Resort) is really one of the best snorkeling spots on the island, and also a marine reserve. Plus you get sunsets!

Rarotonga is surrounded by coral reef. You need reef shoes everywhere on the island, and the owner supplies them for you - a nice thoughtful touch.

Aroa Kainga is a privately run property located beside the owner's house, in a nice quiet neighbourhood (not a touristy center). There is one person tending to the property and guests, so it's not a "resort".

She offers bungalows, which are separated from the main house (more private), and also a studio apartment which is the ground floor of the owner's house. I stayed in the studio apartment for one week, 125 NZD/day.

The kitchen was very well equipped, spacious, and functional. Overall the apartment was very nice, but my one complaint was the bed, which I found a bit uncomfortable due to springs pressing through. The owner says that others have found the bed very comfortable.

Some caveats and down-sides:

1. Dogs. These are everywhere, NOT specific to this property. There are many stray dogs who wander the beaches. They will visit you while you sit on the beach, and can be annoying or threatening. They aren't aggressive, but one nearly bit me when I tried to push him off of my blanket after he got way too close. If you're scared of dogs, take note - this is a Rarotonga problem.

2. Smoke from burning leaves & garbage. There were many small garbage fires in this particular region of the island, and as a result you will occasionally get smoke wafting through the windows. This south-west part of the island doesn't get as much fresh wind, so smoke can linger. It bothered me a bit.

3. Major grocery stores are quite far away. The nearest grocery store (Wigmore's) is bus distance, or very long walk. However there is an excellent fruit stand a short distance to the north.

I strongly recommend that you walk (or bicycle) up towards Wigmore's waterfall, which is a beautiful route not far from Aroa.

This place blew our minds! We stayed here while preparing for our wedding, and the bungalows were surrounded by flora and fauna which provided us with a fantastic amount of privacy and beautiful scenery.

The location is a beauty, it is off the main tourist track so you don't have to worry about being crowded by foot traffic. It is still a two minute walk from the beach. Coco Putt is also a three minute walk away, which provides a lovely buffet meal on Sunday nights at $35 NZD per person. Well worth it!

Sandy was overseeing the property during our stay, she was beyond amazing. She offered to assist us in anyway possible, from needing a lift to anywhere, to letting us wash our clothes in her machine. She also provided us with helpful brochures to local hotspots, which made our stay fun and action packed. While we were away Sandy was always keeping an eye on the property, and we felt 100% safe from robbery. We were also introduced to the neighbors who were all so friendly, and willing to share their local knowledge. We felt right at home and found it incredibly hard leaving this place.

The amenities offered exceeded our expectations. A loaf of bread, fresh fruit, butter and toppings, cooking and eating utensils, shampoo and conditioner, soap, a decent amount of bottled water, television, telephone with free local calls, DVD player, radio, microwave, fridge and freezer, reef shoes, and snorkels.

The bungalow itself was immaculate in every way. We were thrilled with it. The bathroom was a superb size. The wardrobe was large enough to hold both of our suitcases so we didn't have to worry about unpacking everything. There aren't any clothing draws, but there is a shelf for clothing. The kitchen is a bit small, but the living room is adequate. The deck is a good size, and has two loungers upon it. There is also a BBQ on the deck. There isn't any signage, so there is absolutely no way you'd know this was accommodation for tourists which is done on purpose for security reasons.

In terms of our wedding photography this was a great spot. Both bungalows mirror each other - so shots of the bridal and groom preparation looked consistent, which was a very nice touch. Aroa Kainga made our stay in Rarotonga so incredible, it was great value for money, and we'll certainly be back.

We found the bungalows through Tripadvisor and they turned out to be just what we were looking for. They gave the freedom to have our own space and cook when we wanted or easily hire a scooter or catch a bus from the end of the road when we wanted to explore.

They were impeccably clean and well kitted out, with many thoughtful touches. Tricia was a great host and a mine of information, advising us on what to see and where to eat. She really went the extra mile for us a few times, showing the value of staying with someone who genuinely cares about their guests, rather than a faceless hotel.

Thank Tricia - we hope to see you again.

This was a great place to stay in Rarotonga. The location is just inland from the best snorkel beach on the island. The bungalow was lovely--nicely decorated, very clean, well maintained, and well equipped. Tricia was so very helpful and gracious, giving us great suggestions for things to do and places to eat and giving us insight on island life. There is no AC, so pretty uncomfortable in summer months, but fine for most of the year.

We have recently returned from a 9 night stay at the wonderful Aroa Kianga bungalows. I can echo all the previous positive reviews but wanted to add that Lorraine went above and beyond in taking time with us to point out great places on Rarotonga and share her general knowledge. Many thanks Lorraine and also to Trish who sorted out a booking muddle that could have been disasterous but was gracefully explained and resolved. Also in relation to a previous review - the only dogs we came across were friendly, the roosters were doing what roosters do and the occasional fire was not terribly noticeable. We would love to return in the not too distant future and stay for a fortnight next time. Highly recommended!

Aroa Kainga exceeded my expectations! I had the most wonderful holiday! I was traveling solo, and was looking for a good central location at a decent price. The bungalow was perfectly equipped with everything you could need. Very comfortable, cozy and well laid out. The place was VERY clean and tidy and the shower was excellent. The fresh fruit and simple breakfast food was perfect for waking up on the first morning. The location is great, close to the beach, but private and secluded from the road. I rented a scooter which was a great way to get around the island, the bus was easy to use as well. Lorraine was extremely helpful, kind and generous. A VERY happy stay, I genuinely did not want to leave!
I stayed my last night at the Rarotongan resort and was FAR MORE impressed with Aroa Kainga than any part of my stay at the resort which was extremely disappointing. Do yourself a favor and book a bungalow at Aroa Kainga! You can walk to the resort in less than 10 minutes if you want to have a drink at the bar or sit on the beach. Aroa Kainga is a fantastic place!!! Thank you Tricia and Lorraine for everything! I'll be back! :)

The bungalows have 2 ceiling fans, one in the lounge, the other in the bedroom and the apartment has a wall and pedestal fans. The local bus stop is 8-10 mins walk.
