I stayed here with a friend the night before getting the helicopter to Lundy Island from Hartland Point so this B&B was ideally placed. It was the bank holiday just after Christmas, and we arrived late after a long drive down from London, and we arrived to find that Merlyn had forgotten we had booked and was in the middle of cooking dinner. But it didn't matter a bit - Merlyn is very laid-back and friendly, and the rooms were made up so all was fine. The house is absolutely lovely; very old with beamed ceilings and a roaring fire, an Aga and big kitchen table and very tastefully and stylishly decorated rooms. Merlyn is an artist and her beautiful engravings were everywhere in the cottage - I loved the huge picture of the Devon coast in my room which added to the atmosphere. he bed was very comfy, and the room cosy so I slept really well. Breakfast was wonderful, especially the toast made in the Aga from bread from the farmer's market, and Merlyn sat and chatted with us over breakfast so we felt we were part of the family rather than B&B guests. I would not hesitate to recommend this B&B to anyone setting off for Lundy or just exploring this part of the Devon coast.

This review is based on our experience when the owners were away and someone else was covering. It was also the most expensive B and B that we stayed in during our coastal walk (£100). It started off badly when we had to go and buy our own milk from a local store for coffee / tea and breakfast. No apology was made or an offer to reimburse. The rooms, albeit small, were very pleasant but did not warrant to cost. It felt as though it was based on the fact that it was very old and slightly quirky. In the morning there was no offer of cereal, yoghurt fresh fruit etc and a cooked breakfast was hurredly put before us without being asked what we actually wanted. I would hope that the owners take more pride in what they offer. If so, they may want to rethink what arrangements they make when going away, or forego the income.

Sorry, I have only just seen this! I agree that you seem to have had a bad experience and I would have complained too. I am ultimately responsible for quality, even when I am away, and I think the best idea is to, as you put it, forego the income when one is not able to run things oneself. Many thanks for your feedback. Without it I would have been unaware of the problems you faced.

Stayed in twin room. Not en suite but that was fine. Only down side was that there was no TV in the room. Merlyn was great as was breakfast. She very kindly picked me up from the car park at Hartland Quay and brought me back to the village to catch the bus to Morwenstow then next day Clovelly so could walk back to car. Saving a 3 mile road walk.

This was my first experience of a real English "B&B" and it was definitely all that I was expecting, and more from the cat sleeping in front of the AGA to the 4-poster bed. Merlyn serves a great breakfast whether a fully cooked carbo-load for walkers or a lighter version for the health conscious. Great location for visiting the walking tracks of North Devon, and the stunningly scenic Hartland Quay.

Both Hartland Town and this B&B are rather special places. The B&B is one of the more unusual I've stayed at, though I really liked it. It's an artist's cottage with lots of art on the walls and buddha statues - quirky and beautiful, but relaxing too. Merlyn, who runs it, is a very laid back, friendly person who made us very welcome. If you like cats, the lovely Fifi is an added bonus. More than anywhere else I've stayed, I felt more like a guest staying at a friend's house rather than a customer. We had tea when we arrived in her lovely kitchen, and chatted over breakfast the next day too, and she had various friends coming and going who were similarly friendly and laid back. The rooms are very pretty, quite simple (so no TVs etc). Everything was really clean. The breakfast was excellent - especially the toast done on the aga. Some of the cupboards had towels and clothes in, but we were only staying one night so that was fine. The sound insulation wasn't 100% (though my room was OK), but it's an old cottage. Only other issue was my bed had a slightly plasticy mattress cover which I don't like as they get very hot. The town has a good community and lots of artists, and there is a really excellent pub two doors away. Hartland is in a quiet corner of Devon, which I liked too. We really enjoyed staying here.
