Kariega Game Reserve and Settlers Drift Lodge are the ultimate in luxury bush getaways. The accommodation was top class with amazing attention to detail, the game drives were outstanding - we saw seven lions up close, including a mother suckling four cubs! Our ranger Wayne was knowledgeable and wonderful in finding most of the big 5 for us and stopping to show us interesting sights. The game park is breathtaking with wonderful and varied vistas over a 10000 hectare park. All the staff were professional, friendly and attentive to our every need. Meals were delicious and well prepared. Every precaution was taken during Covid time to ensure our health and safety I would highly recommend Kariega and all their lodges. Top class five star venue for an amazing bush break!

I was sitting here 3 months after my trip when I suddenly realised that I hadn’t given a review! I never normally write reviews unless I have had an exceptional experience.
The four of us (two couples) spent 4 days, 3 nights at Settler’s Drift and from the moment you arrive at the gates the excitement begins. From this moment you feel like you have walked into heaven and have the most luxurious few days. I felt like I was in a dream the whole time I was there and cannot fault a single thing. They have thought of everything!!! The tents are like no other tents I’ve seen and have some amazing features. The staff go above and beyond to make you feel like you’re at home. They cannot stop feeding you, there is always food when you need it and the food is of an amazing standard. All the little touches such as the personalised water bottles to the choice between cold or room temperature water. They really do try to accommodate everybody. The safari itself is out of this world. The game drive is small enough that you can cover all of the ground in the 4 days but big enough that you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere and away from society. The sunsets, sundowners, bush walk, boat trip and the truck rides them self we’re fab! But seeing the animals in their natural environment is just wonderful! The guides are so experienced, knowledgeable and passionate about their job and they do everything they can to get you to see as much as you can.
I will never ever forget the four days I spent here and would recommend it to everybody and anybody. It honestly was the best 3 days of my life and I don’t think anywhere will top it! You have to go to Kariega and you have to stay at Settler’s Drift!

Today we checked out of Settler's Drift with a heavy heart and still can't believe how wonderful it was to stay here.

This place proves that heaven on earth really does exist. The interior of the whole course is very tasteful and indescribably beautiful.

Every day the whole team makes sure that you feel very comfortable and that you are always perfectly taken care of. The food and wines are more than delicious.

Kudos to our wonderful and sweet guide Josh, who stands his ground in all weather conditions and has given us some fantastic animal experiences that we will never forget.

To endlessly happy days and always nice and satisfied guests.

Our stay at Kariega's Settlers Drift lodge can only be described as blissful. Our incredibly knowledgeable guide, Michael, managed to find us most of the big animals, despite the fact that things were more quiet than normal and not as many vehicles out to spot animals. The game viewing can be a bit tricky as large parts of the reserve has fairly dense bush, which doesn't allow you to see deep and makes it a bit more challenging to spot the animals. We managed to get up close and personal with rhinos, elephants, lions, giraffes, many different kinds of antelope, warthogs, jackal, birds and insects and learnt so much about the animals, insects and even the plant life from Michael.

The food deserves a special mention as it was the best lodge food we have ever had - and we've been to quite a few of the top lodges. Accommodation and amenities couldn't be bettered and all staff were happy and willing to assist in any possible way. The four days we spent here has seen us recharged and invigorated, albeit maybe a couple of kilograms heavier!!!!

This is the most gorgeous setting, fabulous game viewing with the added plus of a winding river and hilltop views. Great friendly staff, fabulous meals and a luxurious yet unpretentious Lodge. Added bonus, no malaria. Easily accessible from Port Elizabeth airport or beautiful road trip down the Garden Route

Incredible setting overlooking the Bushmans river in Kariega. The rooms which a separate from the very classy central area are enormous. Huge comfortable beds, a fireplace, air conditioning unit, fully stocked bar fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. The food served at the central area was exceptional, paired with very good wines all included in the price. The game viewing was good but not exceptional - there are no predators in the area surrounding the lodge although on drives one is able to enter areas where there are predators and other members of the big 5. The service from the staff from our game guide to the bar and restaurant staff was professional and attentive.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. In terms of the game viewing, this has traditionally been a highlight of our guests experience despite our Lion being free roaming but not immediately in the area of the lodge. However, exciting news is that this is about to change. Keep watching our website. With kind regards from the Kariega team.

We enjoyed a weekend of breathtaking beauty on Kariega, at Settlers' Drift. Our accommodation was simply exquisite, designed to make one feel part of nature. The reserve has hills and valleys and open plains - a sight to behold, with lush vegetation, and a river on which we had a cruise. Our guide was knowledgeable and took us to the most awesome wild sightings. Staff were attentive and friendly, food was very good.

We’ve stayed in Kariega a few times before but this was our first time at Settlers Drift and it was incredible! I always thought I preferred the ‘non predator’ side for the animals but how wrong was I!! The reserve is split by a road and on one side, where the Main Lodge is, it doesn’t have predators so great for families with young children, (game drives take you to both sides so you can still see lion etc if you stay on that side), but as our children are older we decided to stay on the other side. The accommodation was stunning and the staff were brilliant. The food was what you would expect from a top class hotel and the wine that accompanied our meals was excellent.
Having stayed on game reserves quite a few times you know what to expect on game drives but our sightings this time blew me away. Talent, our game ranger, was outstanding, happy to drive and see what we bumped into, which literally was a black rhino at one point, or track down animals that we particularly wanted to see, either way every game drive had something special. From the majestic giraffe and beautiful Kudu to lions hunting buffalo, we saw everything, it truly was spectacular. Can’t wait until our next visit which will be as soon as possible!!!

From our warm welcome on arrival to our hearty departure, everything in between was perfect.
The Staff were wonderful and made sure our every need was met. Our Ranger Micheal did a great job taking us on unforgettable safaris every day. Settlers drift has stunning nature and an abundance of wildlife.
We enjoyed the spacious luxury tents with the most amazing views. Dinner was excellent and the warm breakfasts after the early morning game drive.
I can definitely recommend staying at Settlers drift to unwind, relax and have unrivaled safari experiences for the Eastern Cape

The drinks including wine, beer and spirits are all free. There are some wines that you can purchase but there is no need to do this as there is an extensive selection of complimentary wines and all the one we tried were very good quality

We did 2 nights, which was good. 3 good game drives, plus one totally amazing one, which could not be topped! No chance at all of seeing a leopard. Staff said they had not seen one for over a year.

Hi Lauren, Game drives in the early morning and late afternoon on the open vehicle mean that you need layers! Bring a warm jacket, hat, scarf and gloves. There are warm blankets and poncho's on the vehicle. You should also bring long trousers and closed shoes - especially if you would like to go on a guided bush walk. Google: "what to wear kariega safari" and the results show some useful blogs and links on our website. Please feel welcome to get in touch via the email on our site too. We can't add links in TripAdvisor. We hope you have a great safari and please post your review after your stay. Kind regards from Kariega.
