We made a last-minute itinerary change when we learned about this lodge, and were very glad we did! Excellent food, very nice rooms, and nature served up with expertise! Our stay was too short but we still enjoyed every one of the walks on the premises and learned so much about the flora and fauna... especially the hand fed GIANT EELS. It was gratifying to see the mission of nature preservation and appreciation at work.

Kia ora 474SueW, Thanks for sharing your review. It is great when guests are able to visit both Wilderness Lodges and experience the complementary but contrasting landscapes, activities and settings that each offers. We work hard to put nature protection at the heart of what we do and it's heartening to know our guests appreciate these efforts. Kind wishes, Anne Saunders & Gerry McSweeney

It’s a lovely, quiet, rustic retreat. The food was fine and the accommodations superb. Our room was modern and spacious. The bathroom simple and exceptionally clean, great shower. Nice towels, free washer/dryer. But the highlight was the complimentary eco tours, thank you Jerry.

This is an experience you will never be able to have elsewhere. Anne and Gerry are the consumate hosts with friendly helpful and caring staff who cannot do enough for you. Their unique approach to wildlife conservation in combination with providing lifetime experiences for all their guests no matter what age or ability is far beyond any thing I have ever experienced and should be a model for operators everywhere. I went for penguins - and came away with the most authentic incomparable experience of all NZ flora and fauna possible. And when this is combined with superb accommodation food and wine - I run out of superlatives. Long may they continue this wonderful tradition. If the thought of Fiordland Crested Penguins, or any penguin has ever crossed your cerebral cortex, don't wait any longer - just book.

We went for the penguin experience (& we weren’t disappointed!) but there is so much more to this place. The setting is beautiful, the lounge area very comfortable, the food delicious & plentiful, the bar is always open!
We had a beautiful river view room which was perfect too.
We came away rested & with a new wealth of knowledge about the local flora & fauna.

This lodge is a piece of paradise if you enjoy kayaking, hiking and bird watching. Otherwise, the accommodations are nothing special and there really isn’t much to do that is not nature related. We stayed here specifically to see the Fiorland Crested penguins and enjoy nature. We were not disappointed.

Breakfast and dinner are included in the rate. Both were terrific and dinner was comparable to any fine dining restaurant. It was off season so everyone (all Americans) sat at one large table. Except for us, all the other guests were retired Fortune 500 executives and their wives.

The rooms were almost Motel 6-ish but the lodge location and activities made it worthwhile. Kayaks were available at anytime (both solo and tandem), guided tours (included in the room rate) were offered twice each day at 9am and 3pm and one night we had a night hike to see the glow worms. We also paid extra for two optional hikes to see the penguins and a kayak safari. We felt the attention and knowledge of the guide was worth the extra money.

We took the Newman’s bus from Queenstown and had no problem getting dropped off in front of the lodge. The van was even waiting for us when we arrived. Great place for nature lovers!

We stayed for 3 nights (in the middle of a 7 week trip to NZ). The scenery is very good and the Lodge activities a great deal of fun (even out of Penguin season). I'd strongly recommend staying here long enough (2 nights or so) to participate in one or more walks or kayak trips with the resident guide Swade. He is knowledgeable and entertaining and a real character.

The rooms are spacious. They are a little basic but are being upgraded. Don't let the more serious "eco" side of the marketing deter you- its a fun place. The meals and the wine list are good; kayaks and kit are free for use on the lake; the free guest laundry is very useful too. There is also a drying room. The common areas are comfortable and drinks and fruit are available throughout the day. Highly recommended.

Anytime is a great time to visit the Wilderness Lodge, depending on what you want to see and do there. I believe they close in July-August for winter. But check. You could call and talk to the owners. No there are no tv’s. It’s a wilderness lodge. There is a full library of assorted books to enjoy. The show is really outside, both day and night. During the day it’s hiking in the rainforest, identifying birds and plants, kayaking in the lake, and relaxing while enjoying the clean air. At night there are glow worms, owls and other assorted nocturnal animals. Usually we were so exhausted from our daytime fun, we didn’t even miss tv. As for swimming, I think that you could swim in the crystal clear lake. It is clean enough to drink. It might be a bit cold, depending on when you visit. This was my first visit to a wilderness lodge and now I’m spoiled. The bar is set so high not sure any other lodge could beat it.

Is the lodge open to non residents for a coffee and something to eat?
Answer from marjie905
Toronto, Canada67 contributions64 helpful votes
I would email or call them about dropping in for a coffee. There are two trails on the grounds. One of which goes by the river. There is also an enormous pigeon that likes to perch in the small tree by the river in front of the breakfast room. However, you should try staying at least two nights to really experience the place. That way Gerry can take you out to see the glow worms in the bushes.

Hi. sorry i did not see your post. I can't comment on the price because i honestly don't remember but it is a beautiful place. elegant, relaxing, great atmosphere, and in the meantime you can spend some hours kayaking, hiking, bird watching or just hanging out in the lodge. the owners have some activities planned for each day ( glow worm watching at night), eel feeding, bird watching, etc) you might still be able to catch some pinguin watching from the beach off the resort . this place is a great stop in between destinations but make sure you give yourself some time to enjoy it . we loved it there

Definitely contact Gerry or the lodge. There were none in February. The guided walks all seem to be out from the Lodge..some to the beach, some through forest. We only saw bird life like white egrets, but they were pretty special, and they were near the Lodge intself or Lake Moeraki..which is close and on one of their trails.
