Gerry and Anne welcomed us graciously to their hidden wonder on the West coast of the South Island. Their warmth of sharing this magical World Heritage site with the most comfortable rooms overlooking Lake/ River Moeraki. The personal touches include evening tours watching the eel feeding, experiencing the wonder of gazing at 1,000 year old trees and the worlds largest ferns. Also, walking on the paths through the rainforest to the spectacular Ocean views with Native birds singing and dancing above you. So many incredible touches, including the glow worm night walk that is like seeing hundreds of fireflies twinkling through a waterfall. A peaceful relaxing place where everything works. The eco tourism concept is remarkable.

We enjoyed two nights in this lovely place, perfect in every way, during our West Coast explore. Run by two very knowledgeable scientists who know everything about the history, geology, geography, flora and fauna of the area and who lead walks around it, we relaxed in a very comfortable room and were very impressed with the food. There was even a resident French pâtissier! The staff are charming. The wine list is extensive. You can choose to eat by yourselves or with other guests. Our stay was the highlight of our trip and we warmly recommend it.

My wife and I stayed in some beautiful places in NZ, but if we had to pick one to return to this would be it. in a remote corner of the South Island Gerry and Anne have created something quite remarkable. You get to explore the rainforest with a knowledgeable and passionate guide then enjoy good food with a superb wine list delivered by a friendly young staff. I have to mention the attention to detail that includes proper wooden coat hangers (are you listening Australia?) and a hotel laundry guests can actually use easily. And about those sandflies: I function as my wife's personal insect repellent and if i can be comfortable in socks, long trousers and a judicious application of Aerogard, you will be too.

We spent two nights at the Wilderness Lodge and learned a great deal about the west coast of New Zealand, its rain forest, and its history, all thanks to Gerry and Ann who own the lodge and are dedicated to preserving the local habitat. Our room was comfortable and came with breakfast and dinner. The food is OK and the staff is uniformly friendly. Each day, Gerry and Ann offer free and paid activities, including rainforest walks, guided tours, kayaking, and evening star gazing. Staying at Wilderness Lodge perfectly set up our drive along the west coast of the South Island.

What a gem of a place located right on the river and only a short, free kayak ride to the lake. Quiet, tranquil and beautiful gardens; beautifully decorated and appointed lodge common areas; very comfortable room; well-designed bathroom; and so much more. The service by everyone at the Lodge was impeccable, friendly and caring. The guided walks were very informative and enjoyable, and the laundry facilities were excellent and easy to use. And…saving the best for last…the breakfast, lunch and dinner meals were absolutely superb in their variety, presentation, service and taste! Over a month later, we are still talking about the food! :-) We look forward to returning in the future and highly recommend Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki!

We stayed here as part of Backroads (adventure company) trip. The entire facility is beautiful with comfortable rooms, a very nice lounge area, excellent food, etc. A couple adds that make it even better for people like us on long trips…one was a laundry room! There are 2 washing machines and 2 dryers with an ironing board, folding table, etc. Another feature is the availability of raincoats and gum (mud) boots; we had a lot of rain on our trip so the gum boots (with good tread!) kept our feet dry as we walked the various paths nearby. The real gem here is Gerry, the owner. He is a wealth of local knowledge and a key figure in the development of many of the conservation areas in the New Zealand. The hotel offers a variety of information talks and walks (you get this

We made a last-minute itinerary change when we learned about this lodge, and were very glad we did! Excellent food, very nice rooms, and nature served up with expertise! Our stay was too short but we still enjoyed every one of the walks on the premises and learned so much about the flora and fauna... especially the hand fed GIANT EELS. It was gratifying to see the mission of nature preservation and appreciation at work.

We stayed at both Wilderness Lodge properties when we visited New Zealand. They were both amazing. At Lake Moeraki you are on the west coast in a rain forest, with access to amazing parks and nature walks. You can learn about native floral and fauna, as well as learn more about the Fjordland Crested Penguin. We had a fantastic time. It is a bit remote, which makes it an off the beat and path location. The owners are charming and we had a chance to spend time with other travelers.

Gerry and Anne are wonderful hosts in this one of a kind eco lodge on route 6 West coast NZ. Gerry is a reknown conservationist who shares his passion for the environment and animals with his guests. We saw him feed the eels and show off his glow worms. Then the highlight was seeing the Fiordland Crested penguin colony that Gerry has been nurturing for 40 years. The guests are interesting for the nightly cocktail hour conversation and there are plenty of nature walks and kayaking off the property to keep you busy for two nights minimum. It’s worth the price when driving up the west coast!!
