The hotel was nice and had a good location close to Osaka Castle and Osaka Loop Line. The breakfast was good, but a little overpriced. However it was the friendliness and service level that took this hotel from very good to excellent in my view.

If you're using JR PASS, directions to hotel is like that:

Take train to JR Kyobashi station. Exit through WEST exit and you will see a covered walkway directly in front of the ticket gates, next to a 7-11. Walk straight to the covered walkway, and while walking you will see the hotel on your left. Continue walking, at the end of the road, turn left and continue walking towards the hotel. PS: If you take another exit, it will be difficult to find the hotel.

Hotel room was good and clean. Front desk staff can speak English. Buffet breakfast serves the same food everyday. Wifi connection was good and fast in the rooms. Good for a few nights stay. Even the extra bed was comfortable enough for a few nights sleep. No safe in the room though.

why did I give HMLO an excellent rating??

Well, I spent rather a long time studying reviews from fellow travelers in Trip advisor, and wasn't over-expecting. I chose HMLO due to its modest cost for my family holiday a 20 yr old son and 13 yr old little madam in tow).

A number of comments such as rude staff, cleanliness, and location popped-up. I have no idea where these folk stayed, but it can't have been this Monterey (there are 3 in Osaka, which confuses taxi drivers).

Poor English? Come on; duh, you're in Japan. I never faced any communication issues, even with my zero Japanese. Even the old geezer on reception, who seems hesitant to answer, managed ok, and his colleagues chipped-in

Rude? You must be joking. Even the room cleaners bowed to me and greeted me as I passed them merrily working. Sheesh....show me any American or European hotel where "rude" staff bow to you !????

cleanliness? Hey, my wife is a cleanliness freak, and she said this was the cleanest hotel ever. We have stayed in 100s of hotels.....

So, anyhow

Location
------------
Just 5 mins from JR Kyobashi under covered walkway.to get from Kansai, take the JR line, change to the JR loop at Tennoji on platforms 11/12, exit JR Kyobashi. Look for the yellow sign for "West Gate"...JR stations are badly designed, there's mostly no common concourse, so you might get lost going up and down escalators. Out of the West exit, enter the walkway on the left of 711, to the end, then left. If you want the subway, exit to Twin 21 towers going away from the river, closest is Osaka Business Park, About 10 mins walk. Keihan railway station is past Starbucks in JR Kyobashi, best way to get direct to Kyoto for only Y470, no messing about changing like JR, and they leave every 10mins or so. Osaka castle is only 15 mins walk.for food, McDonald's, subway and a few places in Twin 21. Pretty well connected; why stay in Shinsaibasho, it would be suffocating after a while

Property
======
Small lobby, 6 quick lifts, neat corridors and with drink vending machines and ice on each floor

rooms
=====
Size is decent enough, duh, this is Japan. Polished spotless wooden floor, desk, smallish 32inLED with only Japanese channels. Great views of the city, we were on 21 facing the YTV station. Beds are typically Japanese firm, but not rock hard; I don't have a great back for hard mattresses, but slept soundly. Clean white duvets, pillows average, but funny Japanese ones with rice or pebbles on the back side, so you can't flip them over after dribbling. Small wardrobe; fridge, kettle etc.

Bathroom
========
One of those pre-fab ones, quite small. Shower over bath with piping hot water and precision mixer taps. Loo with a fangled seat which auto flushes time to time, squirts and fumigated your rear. Tons and tons of decent free toiletries, and impeccably clean. Aside from the size, perfect

Service
=======
As mentioned, basic English in reception, no queues, always willing to assist me with any questions or directions. A pleasure to be served by them. Room cleaners are super efficient and perfectionists

Overall,...I would highly recommend, and you can get some fantastic deals online

Some people have received decent customer service from the front desk, but unfortunately we didn't. Like most people here who have commented on the customer service, we found the staff to be extremely rude, uncourteous, unhelpful, and outright disrespectful. We prepaid for multiple nights (and multiple rooms) but left after just one night. We didn't even bother with refunds; we just wanted to get out of there asap. (We thought about leaving that first night, but decided to give the hotel a shot). I've been to Japan more than 50 times (and have even lived there at one point in my life) and I have never, ever encountered such rude and arrogant staff.

Not only was the lack of decent customer service disappointing, the rooms themselves were depressing – everything from the decor, paint, furniture, and really everything about it. It's really a sad place to be in. Honestly this is one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in my life. I wouldn't even want to stay here for free.

There are tons of good hotels in Osaka. There's no need to roll the dice on what kind of service you'll receive from this place. This hotel is really not worthy of your time. Go somewhere else and don't waste your time here. You'll be much happier for it.

Even had this hotel have not made me feel very unwelcome it would still have only received an average review as it was quite expensive for what if offered.

On checking in the receptionist asked twice that we had reserved a double room with one bed for two men. I said that was correct both times. She then suggested that I might prefer to stay in a twin room for a small fee (about £40). I said that I was happy with the room I had booked and she looked uncomfortable at this.

My husband then asked what the problem was and why were they so keen for us not to stay in a double room. The other receptionist said that Europeans would find a twin room more to their liking as these rooms were bigger. My husband said that he'd rather stick to the reservation which we had made and that we were happy with the room size.

Upon getting to the room it was bigger than some of the others we had stayed in whilst on our trip to Japan (including the Monterey in Tokyo).

Based on this alone I would never stay at this hotel or this group ever again (but I have given the Monterey in Tokyo a good review as they didn't behave in this way).

The hotel itself was fine and it's location was OK (quite far from shopping, night-life and the station - about £30 in a cab). The hotel is meant to be 4 stars I think but I don't see how given there is no room service and no restaurants or laundry service.

If you are gay don't stay here. If you're not I'd think carefully before you do given it's high price compared to others in Osaka.

We booked as room for vacation November 2018. It takes around 1 hour from Kansai Airport to hotel. You better take JR line Kansai airport station > JR Tennoji > JR Kyobashi and walk 5-10 minutes to hotel

The room is larger than Hotel APA that I was visit.
The bed is nice and sleep well, and the bathtub full body is the great point to come back.
Compliment for maid who make the room everyday. Fill-up amenities with new things.

You can get drink supply from vending machine at the foyer.
The convenience shop 24/7 at the ground floor.

There is Handy phone with Free Internet and calling for some country. this will safe your data roaming and netbank while you travel.

Hotel location is closed to JR Kyobashi / Metro Osaka Business Park / Keihan Kyobashi .
Osaka Business Park is really quiet after 9-10 PM

There one thing that I would comment is the lighting in the guest room. there is warm color light, I think it is difficult to see things and make the room looks old.

Hotel lobby magnificence is a con of your tired hotel room. the air con is not working properly, like they can switch to their preference no matter what you have set before. It is not working! amenities are poor! I extremely regret not seeing other review before booking this hotel. I hv never ever ever seen such rudeee and yes they were not apologizing and can be irritating like nothing should be complained. I checked in at 10 PM and they gave me 3 times changes!!!! and still the air con only works for the first 10 minutes. I was going to universal and had to find hotel replacement. Until I finally raised my voice after theirs, they said sorry! Damn hospitality!!!! Travellers beware of this hotel if you dont want feel regret. even cheaper hotel in dormy inn was far far far better.

Stayed 2 days. Real 4****. Almost nothing to complain about.

Location — in a business hood with perfect connection to the city; hotel has own foot path to the JR station; 5 min away from subway; located near the Castle Park (highlight); foot access to 2 shopping centre with Starbucks, MCD etc. if you care.

Getting there — we arrived at Shin-osaka (Shinkansen) station and took "jumbo" taxi (4 pax) for 3500¥. Normal taxi costs about 2500¥.

Bulding — tower hotel with nice view over the city; old french but classy style; few restaurants

Check-in — staff is a little bit lost sometimes but smooth in general; wanted money for early check-in so we had to wait till 2PM

Room — spacious, nice furnished, everything you need is there; nice bathroom with full size bathtub (!)

Service — perfect

Sleeping — perfect

Breakfast — rich both in continental and Japanese buffet; really nice view over the city from your table

This was our fifth hotel on our Japan tour and was a very nice hotel. We went the wrong way out of the train station as not sign posted so got lost but when we realised how close we would have been if we had gone the right way we felt a little silly. Once we got our bearings everything was within close range and so near to Osaka castle which was great as we visited during the day and then took a walk there on the evening and it was glorious all lit up at night. There were plenty of places to eat around the area and shops also. The rooms were clean and comfortable with all the toiletries and pj's.The breakfast was buffet style but not much variety. A great end to a great holiday.

My husband, teenage son, and I stayed there five nights. Having never traveled in Osaka before, let alone mainland Japan, it took a couple of days to get our bearings. But by our last night, we knew absolutely that Hotel Monterey Lasoeur had been the right choice for us.
- Great neighborhood: Situated in Osaka Business Park, it's wonderfully quiet at night. It's directly across the river from a bustling commercial neighborhood with plenty of shopping, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and other distractions. A covered walkway runs directly into the JR rail station, a shopping mall, and the Keihan mainline. The OBP subway station isn't too far off, and Osaka Castle Park -- a huge urban park with plenty of historic architecture -- is five-minute walking distance.

Word of warning: We took the JR line in from KIX. The hotel's instructions on railway arrival are only good to a point. They don't tell you how to get to the hotel FROM the rail station, which is very disorienting -- especially when you arrive, jetlagged, after sundown. From Kyobashi Station, exit at the west gate and head straight past the newsstand onto the covered sky bridge. At the end, take a left to cross the river, then another left, staying on the covered walk. The hotel entrance is clearly marked a few yards away.
- Great accommodations: It's hard enough traveling with three adults, harder still when you're sharing a room. Monterey Lasoeur has three-bed rooms that, while snug, still fit us very well. The beds were about American full, so while they wouldn't sleep more than one adult, you could still spread out. They were firm, but with some give (which I came to appreciate after some other hard-as-rock mattresses on other stays of our trip). The bath was western style, with plenty of hotel complimentary items. AC worked magnificently, a godsend given how hot and humid it was outside. Open wifi made our internet planning that much easier. Beyond the room, the hotel sports an Art Deco motif, very lovely. It has plenty of in-house restaurants and other amenities, though I can't say we partook all that much. We had the breakfast buffet: tasty and quite well-stocked, yet a little spendy. Directly downstairs is a 24-hour Family Mart, so we could always catch a quick morning or evening bite, when scheduling prohibited a proper sitdown.
- Great service: We never had any real issues with language barriers; there was always someone on staff with very good to excellent English skills. Everyone was polite and beyond courteous. They held our bags for half a day, as well. Always appreciated.

If you arrive at Kansai airport and unless you have a lot of luggage, the best way is to take the subway that connects to the Osaka loop and you will not need to switch trains. It's almost door to door with a 10 minute walk to the hotel when you get off Kyobashi station. You can take the same train going back to Kansai airport, but make sure you get in on the first 4 cars because the train will uncouple at Hineno stations with only the front half going to the airport.
