Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It was the first B&B we stayed in and Lesmahagow was the best choice we could have made. Kate and Noel are probably the best hosts you could imagine and you can consider yourself lucky to get a room in this gorgeous home. Everything perfectly fits together: the amazing service, the beautiful rooms, the wonderful garden/house and the outstanding dinner and breakfast. That night, we had the best sleep of our trip and by far the best lamb we have ever eaten. All in all Lesmahagow offers everything you could wish for and we can highly recommend staying there. Last but not least its location is just great to start your trip to the Catlins.

Wow what an amazing b&b, from the huge immaculate rooms to ever so hospitable hosts, this is without a doubt the best b&b I've had the pleasure to stay at. For an additional cost you should definitely take up the offer of dinner which is restaurant quality home cooking.

Kate is a lovely hostess and a wonderful cook, so do ask for dinner in! The rooms are large, well refurbished and very comfortable. The lodge's garden is large and lovely for that morning stroll after a sumptuous breakfast.
Kate is very knowledgeable about the Catlins and local district which helped us redesign our route to encompass all of her suggestions.

The room was lovely & it is a lovely old house with a beautiful garden
The bathroom is down a corridor & up some stairs so unexpectedly quite a distance from our room.
The meal was ok. The dessert was gluten free & dairy free & we are neither of those, and below average to taste but I didn't like to say as the lady was very nice & has written a cook book.
I felt it was over priced for what we received & was charged $10 more than I was quoted.

If I lived in New Zealand and did regular weekend breaks away from the stresses of city living, I would be reluctant to review this B&B as I would not want to draw attention to it. We stayed 2 nights from 29/10/10 and I have to say it has been the most peaceful, perfectly located, beautifully presented and comfortable stay of our world trip. Just a 45 min drive from Dunedin airport, Lesmahagow is situated a short drive just outside Balclutha, a small Catlins town. Sitting in its gorgeous, colourful garden, there are lovely views across the hills where you can just sit and listen to the birds singing during the day, or view the myriad of stars which are visible at night. The brick house has a welcoming feel, the owners are extremely friendly and kind, our bedroom was spacious and tastefully furnished, good views of the garden and across the hills, bed comfortable, great bed linen, towels. The room’s bathroom is separate and down the corridor but no worries as they thoughtfully have provided dressing gowns. No little thing seems to have been overlooked. Did I mention breakfast? Home baked bread, fresh fruit, well cooked eggs & bacon. Tip: there did not seem to be anywhere locally for dinner so I would recommend you book dinner with them if you can, as Kate is very accomplished and we had 2 delicious evening meals. This is a great base from which to explore this side of the Catlins.

Although it was cold and rainy when we stayed, the house was lovely and warm, with radiators in every room, and a gas fire in the lounge. We really felt comfortable and at home there.

This is a beautifully restored historic house - like stepping back in time. The rooms are tastefully decorated, and although there are no ensuites, there are plenty of bathrooms just down the hall. Kate and Noel are very welcoming hosts, and the meals were delicious.

This was a very memorable stay for us, much nicer than all the bland, modern motels.

Beautiful character home - however pricing up there - no ensuite - food etc average - host and hostess quite full on - grounds are beautiful - not worth the tariff to stay in Benhar - which is a very average part of Sth Otago

Not only was the venue looking a million dollars, but Kate & Noel O'Malley and their wee helper Maddy were wonderful hosts - all adding up to a fantastic wedding venue. As I said to Kate the following day "I'm SO HAPPY we chose to get married there". Kate made the selection of canapes & many of our guests commented on how good they were. Our wedding was on the 19th March & Kate had the gardens & grounds looking fabulous. The old brick walls, timbers, & steps have great character & the house itself was also a beautiful backdrop. It was a cracker day & we will forever be left with beautiful memories.

A super B&B set in a lovely old country house with beautiful gardens set just outside the town. The owners, Kate and Noel, were outstanding hosts and we ate an exceptionally nice evening meal there as well as breakfast.
Wonderful bedroom and large bathroom, although not en suite.
A very special New Zealand experience, although not for those seeking a modern motel.

We spent our first night in NZ at lesmahagow and thought all our dreams had come true. A beautiful house, a very warm welcome and hospitality from our hosts, 5 star food, spectacular surrounds and gardens, beds so comfortable we didn't want to get out of it, all meant a very lovely place to stay and we would totally recommend this B&B to everyone.
